Palm-muting is a vastly overlooked technique in rhythm and lead playing. I started focusing on it more lately because I'm adding in big, stretchy licks and Paul-Gilbert-style picking and legato licks, and the reason I wasn't able to play them as fast as I wanted to was because my muting sucked. Started working on my muting and everything else improved along with it.
This is counter intuitive but the trick for the this kind of riff to sound sharp is to care as much about the muting of the power chord as with the palm mute. Most of the time when you begin with this you alternate between a palm mute sounding messy because the sustained power chord bleeds into it and the power chord not sounding sharp because you are not muting the E string with the tip of the index finger fretting the power chord.

Rammstein by Rammstein live is so bone crunching. When they played it last year it started in full darkness and only a few red lights blinking, making it look like an airfield runway. i do it the same way as you do usually, but some songs have fingerings where the follow-up is easier if done other ways. there's no hard and fast rule on how you should finger your chord. hell sometimes, i finger a chord using only one joint of my finger so i can free up two fingers. takes some getting used to, though
