So if the Sickness is next (real Disturbed), then here's the meaning, so you're not scared for life. Stole this from another site: "... he's not talking about his actual mother, he is referring to the 'mother society' or the main stream culture of today which is disgusting and looks down upon anything that is different. He saying that the people who are different are the ones that society today views as being sick. Thus the... 'get up get down with the SICKNESS'..."

Phillip Castro context: the song is about a dream Paul Simon had. He dreamed about thousands of people worshiping a neon god (technology). People talking without speaking (texting). People hearing without listening (internet). People writing songs that voices never share (RUclips for example). The original from 1964 was a warning that technology is going to take over our lives to to be careful. The Disturbed version is anger because that warning was ignored.

I love watching people react to this song!
The lyrics, powerhouse vocals of David Draiman and his passion, driving this song home,in our minds, planting seeds to grow and provoke deep reflection of what has become of humanity and our Earth.
Seeing people's eyes and facial expressions are wonderful, watching the moment that the penny drops, that something has been destroyed by humanity and maybe it's too late for loving each other and our Earth.
    It hits a raw nerve.
No one has done with this song, what David Draiman and Disturbed have.
The power, rawness, passion and feelings that are not only seen on David's face, but are heard in his voice.
Definitely raises the vibrational energy and frequency.
This song was written for you to sing David Draiman.

I hope you know what you do is so important. I have depression. I was
diagnosed when I was 17 (I'm 36 now). I've always been able to deal with
it so that it didn't have a major impact on my life. About 2 years ago I
was diagnosed with some other chronic illnesses that caused me to have
to leave my job. Then my father's health took a bad turn and he is now
currently awaiting a lung transplant. I ended up moving back in with my
parents to save money and take care of my dad. My depression got much
worse and I cut myself off from everyone but my immediate family. I
started watching your videos and some other music reaction videos and I
noticed they really brought me joy. When reflecting on this I realized
that while I am so thankful to be here to help my parents, I missed my
friends. I missed just hanging out, talking, listening to music. Getting
into debates over a bands best song. Talking about what memories a
certain song brings up, etc, etc. You made me see that I was just
existing and that I needed my friends to help me dig out of this
depression. I've recently reconnected with people that I love and I can
feel that things are getting better. Thank you for what you do!

Most times I prefer the original. But in this case, I think Disturbed's version is just so much better. The tempo in the original was pretty much the same the whole way through while this one starts out soft but leads up to a crescendo. I will give S&G credit for one thing - Art couldn't sing, but this song was perfect for him somehow.
In all though, I do agree with Sean that you should seek out the original. The stylings of S&G's version suit the era and Disturbed's version goes much better with the current times.

David Draiman is the lead vocalist. In my 40+ years of listening to music, this is by far the best cover song ever.
'Sound of Silence' was written in 1964 by Paul Simon & recorded as sung by Simon & Garfunkel. I recommend listening to their performance of the song. The lyrics are accompanied with a simple melody - the song's meaning about "youthful alienation," as quoted by Simon himself. Think of 1964 America; Simon was 21 when he wrote 'Sound of Silence.'
Disturbed's version here I have no doubt is a respectful tribute. But vocalist Draiman's range in singing is amazing and he puts strong feelings into the stanzas as the song crescendos to the end. Definitely a compliment to Paul Simon.
Now, if you pay attention to the video, Disturbed interjects their own interpretation. Watch carefully the scenes of musical instruments seemingly abandoned in the dry sands of the desert. What if music was dying?
Pay attention - at the very end, music & its instruments are collected and saved in Biblical fashion!

David Draiman is the lead singer. Disturbed has sooo many good songs, hard to say which ones are a must listen, but here are mine (just my opinion).
Start with Stupify & Down With The Sickness for their classics, then The Vengeful One, Serpentine, The Night, Enough, Stricken, & Sons Of Plunder. Also check out Immortalized, Asylum, The Infection, Indestructable, Inside The Fire, & The Curse.
All amazing songs that really get you pumped up. Good workout music.

You already know the singers name and probably heard that this song was originally done by Simon and Garfunkle. After Disturbed performed this on Conan's show David recieved a call from Paul Simon and Paul Simon told him that The Sound of Silence was now his song. Now that is something! An original artist handing the torch of one of their songs over to another artist that took the song to a whole new level. I grew up with Simon and Garfunkle and this was always my favorite of their songs but this version gives me chill bumps every time I hear it even when I listen to it 2 or 3 times in a row. No other song has ever done that to me and I have listened to over 10,000 different songs in my life easy.

My father told me many years ago he dont really listen to what most bands were singing. But just the melody of it. Thats cause he never had english training much in school etc and just national tv in the 60s when he grew up. For me tho that kinda came naturally beeing born in the 80s. I got angry at him at times cause he was saying he didnt like this song and that song cause he didnt like the melody of it. And didnt really understood the lyrics. This isnt an issue in the native english speaking countries ofc. But all im saying is they didnt make songs just for fun most of the time back in the days, they had a message. Most artist makes music to bring forth a meaning to a song. This one is powerfull indeed, and the message is still as important today as it was hell, 50 years ago.

I added my disturbed recommendations to another great list compiled, but since it’s a tour for their new album, I’m sure they’ll sprinkle in a few new songs with their more popular songs. Maybe give their new album, Evolution, a listen one night too.
Three Days Grace is also worth giving a listen as well. I heard they’ve had the most rock #1s out of any band since they release their first single. Seems odd to me, cause they don’t get much love, but they’re pretty good radio rock.
That being said, Nine Inch Nails should be the next band you check out. My recommended song by them: Wish

I love that Disturbed didn't turn this old song with this huge message into rock/metal half ways.
    These lyrics don't need it.
David getting more and more angry at the end is enough.
Ppl didn't listen in the 60's, 70's and 80's and when the internet came with the so called SM, ppl are less communicating, less really listening to eachother, speaking lot of bla bla.
COMMUNICATION face to face, about everything, is NECCESSARY ppl. TV (MSM) is propaganda for evil minds making huge profits.
SM is for monkey, for zombies. It's not social at all.
REAL COMMUNICATION FACE TO FACE IS ESSENTIAL.
    LISTEN TO EACHOTHER IS ESSENTIAL.
READING FACES AND BODY LANGUAGE WHILE COMMUNICATING IS ESSENTIAL.
THEN, ONLY THEN, MOST PPL HEAR THE LIES!! The truth, the fun etc.

Lol and people thought us Metal Heads were crazy for liking this stuff. Every person I have ever introduced to it and gave it a chance loves it. Its one of the last Genres of Music that actually says something or has a message beyond the "getting Mine" mentality. You need to listen to some of the classics of rock to see the origins of Metal. It came out of the 60s and 70s rock era. The Stones, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin paved the way. It lead into more Melodic Rock that still had good lyrics such as Pink Floyd and The Eagles. Rock and Metal is a genre that has consistently has a message to challenge, overcome, and renounce the shackles of society / rule. Glad to see someone else discover it.

I was 13 when Simon & Garfuncle wrote and sang this song. I loved it but I never paid attention to the lyrics. This version you diffently understand the lyrics. I hope he makes more videos like this.

    • @R3_dacted0

Talking without speaking refers to people that ramble and pretend to know what they are talking about. They talk and talk and talk but never actually say anything of value.
Sure, you can apply it to texting but this song was written in the 60s, so texting is most certainly not the intention.
