“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence? It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy. One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history. The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life." 8You and 7 others 5 Comments 1 Share Love Comment Share

Okay LAYEDBACK I’ve been apart of the fire squad for sometime now. Love your reviews, so I’m going to finally throw out some recommendations. For metal? I would recommend ice nine kills- “ stabbing in the dark” or “Tess-Timony” .... and you already listened to my boy NF
This man is channeling the anger, angst and anguish of a world that didn't listen and learn from the original version, released in the 60's. The planet is now reaping what we sowed with our greed and selfishness....silence.... A tour de force. I am a man who doesn't usually cry, but this song gets my cheeks wet every time. If it doesn't leave you drained and shaken to your soul, then you are a robot. Peace.
Garfunkel once summed up the song’s meaning as “the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other.”
Tanner he wasn’t quite trained as a opera singer. The actual term “Hazzan,” which is one in the Jewish community who is trained in vocal arts to lead his or her congregation in prayer; quite similar to a cantor in Christianity
It's a Cover. One that one of the original artists was absolutely stunned by. In case you want to compare, listen to "Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel. Disturbed made a completely different song out of this evergreen and i'm STILL happily singing it loud, proud and off tune when it plays in the radio.
I agree with you my friend.. there's no dull moment in the song, such a perfect song, with such perfect melody and voice.. the arrangement? Ugh speechless.. i can listen to this song for thousands of years (exag)..
I'm also amazed people don't know this Song is originally from Simon and Garfunkel. I'm 29 but grew up to my parents listening to the song. Love this new adaption of it.
I love how the song written so long ago by Simon and Garfunkel has lyrics that so perfectly reflect society today. Talking about how “people talk without speaking”(texting), “people hear without listening” (fast paced living in one ear and out the other and don’t pay attention) “And the people bowed and scraped, to the neon God they made” (people being so attached to cellphones, tablets, etc.) And then for disturbed to so masterfully capture the emotion of the track. Amazing vocals and visuals. One of my favorite ever covers.
TheEpic22 I was not intending it to be taken that way. I was only pointing out how I love how the song has the ability to have today’s times and issues applied to the song written before we had all of this. I know that Garfunkel has a deeper meaning as had a deeper meaning as he actually stated in an interview "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other." I just always find it amazing when songs can be interpreted by different generations and applied to that generations particular time. Much respect for pointing out it is a deeper meaning just wanted to let you know that my intent was not to depress anything.
Great reaction! I have a different view. Every artist's work is affected by the time/era that they live in and their work is often a reflection of that era (btw, when it comes to music, I'm talking about real music, not the bubble-gum crap created in a record executive's studio and pumped out to a generation of intellectual zombies). Paul Simon wrote this song during the 1960's, an era known for social upheaval, the questioning of traditional values and norms by the youth and the creation of the counter-culture. One institution that started facing a lot of questions was the government. The 50's were over and so too were people's blind acceptance of whatever the government said was the 'truth'. For the first time, people started openly questioning and protesting their government's decisions about everything from Civil Rights to the Vietnam War and everything in between. I believe Paul Simon wrote this song as a warning to people to not remain silent when it came to questioning their government's decisions and their motives for those decisions, reminding everyone that, in a democracy, we are the ultimate check on a government running amok with power. As powerful as the words are, they were presented in a folk-song. Again, I believe this was the result of the era within which the song was created. The 'Flower Children' of the 60's believed love could conquer all and, to that end, there is no need to scream out a social message. It would be counter-productive, in that era, to present such a message in an angry way. The song explained what the stakes were and then warned us to keep our guard up and be ready to make some noise. Fast forward 50 years and it seems apparent that we did not heed the warning. Along comes Disturbed with a whole new take on this classic. The message is the same but the feel is very different. It's one of anger and frustration at all of us for not having heeded the original warning. As the song builds to it's climax, you can feel Draiman's combination of anger, pain and frustration at our failure as he seems to be telling us that we, through our silence, are responsible for the world that we now live in. However, this message does also come with a sliver of hope. The hope is that we can change things. We were the ones who made this mess so we should be the ones to clean it up. Step up, be heard and do your part to make the world a better place. It is the sort of mentality and outlook on life that seems to be inspiring millions of young people around the world to unite in organizing major, world-wide, protests for everything from gun-violence to climate change. This generation is using the tech to instantly organize massive protests around the world. In doing, so they are not only showing the way to older generations like mine, they might actually be living up to the challenge Paul Simon, and later Disturbed, gave all of us. My two cents, any way.
PLEASE go back and listen to it on a LOUD volume it's extremely powerful and beautiful man. I was bummed you couldnt immerse yourself in it cause you were worried about them coming out hard.

One thing that says a lot is that Paul Simon loves and appreciates this cover of his song, and had even stated that Disturbed’s live cover of the song was a “really powerful performance”. And, it wasn’t just simply because his song was being covered, for this song was covered by someone else, and Simon wasn't really all that kicking on it. My own takeaway, when I first heard the cover -back when it was first released- I absolutely loved it, and thought it was the best cover version of this song. Even after all these years later, and having heard a bunch of other covers of this song, I still believe that Disturbed’s cover is the best one done of it, and still absolutely love it.

I disagree. The original is always a classic and the way they harmonise together gives me chills every time , it’s really haunting and although this is good , it doesn’t really hold a candle 🕯.
In my opinion one of the strongest lines in the song is: "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share and no one dared disturbe the sound of silence." You just have to let that sink in for a while.
This rendition makes you listen to every word of the ingenius lyrics. David's voice is like there is both an angel and a demon inside him. His voice is super controlled and rich with vibrant tones and guttural growls, but it is also the visuals that make the video as compelling as it is. Even the lighting tells a story. It is now one of my favorite songs and, the more I hear it, the more depth I get out of it.
This song was played at my friend's funeral 2 years ago. Hacking into the schools Internet made us friends, our love for Disterbed made us an unbreakable duo. When I die, I want this song played at my wake. As an aspie and introverted guy, this does resonate with me. It's so deep and powerful that I know what it's like to be taken for granted, ignored, disrespected, and underestimated. No shit !

I love how so many people go "No! Dave doesn't look like Howie" Which is hilarious as no one ever mentioned Howie Mandel yet *EVERYONE* knew exactly who he meant... Occams Razor would suggest Dave does look a bit like Howie.
Well, to be fair, there is only one well-known person he could have been talking about with his description. lol It was more a case of deductive reasoning. He could have said all of that in a random conversation and people still would have known who he was talking about.
@@elecjack1 I wouldn't... Even so, its way more likely reason people knows who he means is cuz they actually does look somewhat alike. As I said, Occams Razor.
I do not see how this has anything to do woth occams razor, but i know that they have similar hair, facial constructs and near similar facial fat deposits. If you google Howie Mandel, remove the beard and put the appropriate piercings then they could stunt doubles. However with simple deduction you can see that he is indeed referring to Howie because of the description he gave. Take note that he laidback resides in Cali and probably always has lived in the US. Most of the US children watch Deal or No Deal through their parents and become somewhat fond of it. David looks like him however he wore glasses at the time while playing on a game show. Coincidence? I THINK NOT! Find me one more that looks identical or at least bald, and wears glasses on a gameshow/talk show. Now that is occams razor because the rest look nothing less similar, arent wearing glasses and not a talkshow/gameshow host. Occams razor requires a few options to choose from.
@@theshut-in1097 Not really. If you apply the common use version of "the simplest explanation is usually the right one." If everyone and their dog knows who he is talking about without mentioning his name (or even the right show) the simplest answers would be "because they look the same" I don't see how that's in any way hard logic to follow? Besides he didn't say deal or no deal, he said who wants to be a millioner. People automatically in their mind corrected it to deal or no deal and drew the parallel to Howie cuz they *know* what he looks like and saw the resemblance. If they *didn't* look alike people wouldn't go "ooh he's thinking of deal or no deal". My point stands. The reason people know who he is talking about *is* because they look the same.
I will NEVER forget the first time I heard this version. OMG I was literally blown away, and it still hits me every time I hear it. I just love seeing people's reaction to it when they hear it. The first time I heard it, I was driving and it was on the radio. I had to pull over just so I could concentrate on the voice and music. One of the handful of songs that gives me goosebumps!!
It's refreshing to hear the youth analyze the old. I was 3 feet tall when I first heard this song and I thought folk music was for hippies. This is an exciting cover of a beautiful song. Metal meets folk, wow, who knew? "There is nothing new under the sun".

This is a remake/tribute of the original song (Disturbed didn't create the lyrics to this song). To be honest, this is in my opinion 1000 times better than the original.
ima be honest, i LOVE the original by simon and garfunkle and at first i was so excited to see Disturbed had covered it coz i love them too, but I was disappointed when i first heard it, but the more i listen, the more it grows on me.
This was a cover of a song from the 1960’s from the legendary Folk Artists Simon and Garfunkel. The 60’s has many genres of music, Folk, being 1. Folk music was a way of telling an entire story in one song. This song was Simon and Garfunkel’s protest of the Vietnam War. The original was very soft, but profound. David Driaman took it to another level. David has the best voice in Metal. He was classically trained to be a Cantor in the Jewish religion. He’s an amazing singer and artist.
Draiman clears two octaves in this song and never stresses his chords at all. He has such control that the vocal fry he does isn't harming his chords either. He has such a rich texture in his voice, this song never fails to give me chills and many times brings a tear or two but you need to crank it up.
This Simon & Garfunkel song is all about the lyrics. Written in 1964 by Paul Simon, after the assassination of JFK, its lyrics were about the darkness and light that represented people's inability to communicate, which had been destroyed by their detachment and ignorance. JFK, Malcom X, RFK, & MLK! All selfishly taken in a span of 4 yrs from this song...It never rang more true! If you look at this song for the lyrics it takes on a whole other meaning and feeling...pretty powerful!
This song was talking about television in the sixties. Parents not paying attention to kids, zoned out. Paul had no idea how prophetic is was. We are now talking without speaking, staring at the neon light we made our God. We were warned and we are now in the sound of silence. Just look at me now, talking speaking without speaking... Truly prophetic
Mindblowingly powerful voice that guy's got! It lures you in, then clears your earwax - all in one song! Thanks for giving this a Pass. It's been a favourite of mine since it came out.
A more “metal” cover by this band is “Land of Confusion”, from the original Genesis track. A great example of what metal rock can bring with new energy to a very relevant rock classic.
Yeah that's one of the first songs they've done that I heard too. Love it and most of what they've done that I've heard. I need to explore more of their music.
I think Sound of Silence was meant to be part of the 10,000 Fists album. I'm probably wrong about that, but Draiman said he had wanted to cover this song since at least 2005. He just wasn't sure if he could do the original the justice it deserves at the time.
When people say Metal singers can’t sing, I always show them Disturbed. I show them the studio recording, and then the live versions. Draimen is one of VERY few singers who can sound exactly the same live as he does in a recording, and it’s because he never uses auto tune.

I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."

I love the original and this as well
I love how he learned his lesson “I ain’t gonna turn it up”.... “might just turn it down”
Edit: thanks for the likes! I ain’t ever get this type of reaction🤣🤣
This man been straight scarred lmao XD
Foo Fighters have terrified him
Only took him 9 or 15 times before he learned that lesson. Lol
Okay LAYEDBACK I’ve been apart of the fire squad for sometime now. Love your reviews, so I’m going to finally throw out some recommendations. For metal? I would recommend ice nine kills- “ stabbing in the dark” or “Tess-Timony” .... and you already listened to my boy NF
and its been the one time where the song didnt turn crazy
This man is channeling the anger, angst and anguish of a world that didn't listen and learn from the original version, released in the 60's. The planet is now reaping what we sowed with our greed and selfishness....silence....
A tour de force. I am a man who doesn't usually cry, but this song gets my cheeks wet every time. If it doesn't leave you drained and shaken to your soul, then you are a robot. Peace.
Well said
Great comment but “gets my cheeks wet” was probably not the best phrase to use for crying my guy 😂

@@cloutogelevatedtv9000 i'd prefer deathstep for "aggresiveness" i turn that shit allll the way up.
Garfunkel once summed up the song’s meaning as “the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other.”
David's vocals are no joke. As a metal "vocalist" it's hard to hit range and that nasty tone he has is great.
he is a trained opera singer
Tanner he wasn’t quite trained as a opera singer. The actual term “Hazzan,” which is one in the Jewish community who is trained in vocal arts to lead his or her congregation in prayer; quite similar to a cantor in Christianity
J H disturbed is NOT FUCKING METAL You plebs
Detestor 420 ahhhhhh yes. There’s the black metal elitist that was missing from this thread
And his growl, damn he can sing better than 99% of what they play on the radio.
Me: (Has heard this song before... multiple times..)
Also me: *Chills the entire song**😅
Every. DAMN. Time... it's an emotional experience every time.
Yassss!!!
I agree with the loud, peoud and off tune. Lol. Cheers buddy. Its good to actually know im not alone in this world. Hahaha
True. This is a case where I love BOTH versions because even though its the same song, they evoke two totally different feelings!
This guy's voice... DAMN. His voice is spine tingling. Able to force that raw power of metal without being harsh... it's so good.
Wonder if he understands how amazing those lyrics actually are. One of the best songs ever written, period.
Lasciel right. I’m like does he really appreciate it or ??
AGREED 100%
I'm also amazed people don't know this Song is originally from Simon and Garfunkel. I'm 29 but grew up to my parents listening to the song. Love this new adaption of it.
I love how the song written so long ago by Simon and Garfunkel has lyrics that so perfectly reflect society today. Talking about how
“people talk without speaking”(texting),
“people hear without listening” (fast paced living in one ear and out the other and don’t pay attention)
“And the people bowed and scraped, to the neon God they made” (people being so attached to cellphones, tablets, etc.)
And then for disturbed to so masterfully capture the emotion of the track. Amazing vocals and visuals. One of my favorite ever covers.
Paul Simon said in an interview that he prefers Disturbed's version to his own.
The MMA Dad
You’re kind of depressing the much deeper meaning of the words
TheEpic22 I was not intending it to be taken that way. I was only pointing out how I love how the song has the ability to have today’s times and issues applied to the song written before we had all of this.
I know that Garfunkel has a deeper meaning as had a deeper meaning as he actually stated in an interview "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
I just always find it amazing when songs can be interpreted by different generations and applied to that generations particular time.
Much respect for pointing out it is a deeper meaning just wanted to let you know that my intent was not to depress anything.
History repeats.
Boss you ever heard the original? Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.
I personally feel and think Disturbed sang it better.
Dun_did_ its So do Simon and Garfunkel lol
Simon & Garfunkel's version was a warning. Disturbed's version is rage because the warning was ignored.

I would much rather them pause it and talk about how they feel rather than talk about how they feel as the song keeps playing and then they miss out on some good parts of the song.
this is his reaction. nothing wrong with it..
This version of the song is by far the best, actual chills when this man sings!
No it’s not the original will always be the best and disturbed also said that Simon and Garfunkel’s original was better
@@rileyganger4217 Well that's your opinion. I think its the best one so we will just have to agree to disagree.
I think the one performance Disturbed did of this song on Conan was better then they’re video
Riley Ganger My father is 3 months away from being 70 and doesnt listen to metal. He’s worked in the music industry for over 40 years, has his own recording studio, has worked with dozens of international acts. And he’s happy to recognise that the Disturbed version is the best.
I disagree. The original is always a classic and the way they harmonise together gives me chills every time , it’s really haunting and although this is good , it doesn’t really hold a candle 🕯.
In my opinion one of the strongest lines in the song is: "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share and no one dared disturbe the sound of silence." You just have to let that sink in for a while.
this is such an old song, how have you not heard it yet? its even in memes, its litterally EVERYWHERE.

When they did this on Conan... chills. Love this version. Disturbed does some wonderful covers as well as great original songs.

I believe the live version on Conan is amazing especially since he was sick. It moved Paul Simon to tears.

Wasn't completely live. It was recorded in a different studio, and who knows if it was the first take or not.

I love how so many people go "No! Dave doesn't look like Howie"
Which is hilarious as no one ever mentioned Howie Mandel yet *EVERYONE* knew exactly who he meant...
F1rst World NomaD Howie Mandel instantly went into my mind
@@theshut-in1097 Not really.
If you apply the common use version of "the simplest explanation is usually the right one."
If everyone and their dog knows who he is talking about without mentioning his name (or even the right show) the simplest answers would be "because they look the same"
I don't see how that's in any way hard logic to follow?
David has one of the most beautiful powerful voices ever. It’s haunting beautiful.
"I'm Scarred" best line of the video. You fell for the light opening of a Metal track before, yeah it happens.
Disturbed got the most epic of praise when Simon said in an interview that they could not have done it better.
Originally written by Simon and Garfunkel. That's why the lyrics are so powerful. Truly two of the greatest song writers of all time.
Jinjer Pisces if you want to be amazed and scared at the same time.
This was the softest disturbed song to ever react to 😂 nevertheless, a fantastic song!
Actually not even a disturbed song but I knew what you meant
as a metalhead listening to the sound of silence always gives me chills down my spine from the first 10 sec
Howie Mandel, the show was Deal or No Deal lol

A more “metal” cover by this band is “Land of Confusion”, from the original Genesis track. A great example of what metal rock can bring with new energy to a very relevant rock classic.

Their covers are a great intro to the band. Another Way to Die deserves more attention but newbies can't just jump into that
I think Sound of Silence was meant to be part of the 10,000 Fists album.
