      He should have looked up the lyrics before doing this reaction video. Every reaction video I have ever see the lyrics have been researched as well as the original version of the song for comparison. You say he cares because he looked up the lyrics but he was already listening to the song and getting confused by it before he looked them up. That's lazy.

People couldn't speak there mind about society because they would be killed speaking against people who ruled the lands when there wasn't laws to protect people rights. Unfortunately, there are people today that choose to only hear what they want to hear or to ignore what they don't want to hear.

    Paul Simon made a statement that he had trouble concentrating while playing his guitar and writing music because of distractions. He stated that the world was obsessed with TV (neon god they made) and the world was constantly changing for the worse. He said that he would cut the lights out in his room but a street light would shine in and there would be no darkness. He mentioned in an interview that he would go to his bathroom, turn the lights off and turn on the faucet water to drown out any other sounds around him. He stated that it was his relaxation place to sing and play guitar in the dark. He said that he would say, hello darkness my old friend, every time he cut the lights out. He also mentions that little things about that bathroom was referenced in a diffrent way in the song. He said that the water running sounded like rain and that the tile had a cobblestone fill to it. He also said that the bathroom echoed when he played guitar and sung. He mentioned that his parents would not listen to him and paid him no attention. They would watch TV and would ignore one another including him. He stated in an interview that he wrote the song at 21 and it was a reflection on his inability to concentrate due to a changing world and his loneliness.

      Not sure on that, but it wouldn't surprise me. I do know he was living at home, fresh out of college and was working in his first job in music. He worked for a company who took other writers songs and sold them to record labels. He stated that that part of they lyrics to sound of silence was about these songs. That basically people wrote these songs and record companies would not want them or either put it with the wrong melody and it sucked so bad no one cared to listen to it. Simon had a really complex mind.

    This song is dedicated to you. Its dedicated to me. It's a dedication to EVERYONE. That's why it's so powerful.
    When we do not come together as a people, to share our thoughts, our feelings, our overall humanity with one another... we are left with silence. And as he says, silence like a cancer grows. Unless we set aside whatever it is that keeps us "silent", we will never create "music" together. We will never live in harmony.
    The neon god is the media, technology, consumer market, ect- basically anything that SEEMS like a way to bring people together. But think about how many times you log into facebook and see posts portraying negativity amongst us, think about how many times youd rather be glued to your phone or computer rather than conversing face to face with some one... and the consumer market PUSHES for these things because they dont care if it brings people together or tears them apart- they care about one thing... and that is that you BUY BUY BUY so they become rich.
    Someone else in the comments wrote that Simon and Garfunkel originally wrote this song as a warning and Disturbed brought it back in their rendition as a statement to tell us it was ignored. I agree. And I think most people deep down agree- and that's why it moves us so much.
    The phrase "come together" sometimes sounds cliche but it's an EXTREMELY important. We are all brothers and sisters. We are all human.
    (Sorry for the rant 🤣 I just love the message of this song and how it was covered by them)

      Thanks guys. I'm just calling it like it is. This guy.... I swear. I've never seen anyone so enthusiastic about learning more about his brother across the street. I pray one day we can all be as thrilled as this man to know eachother and embrace eachothers differences and strive to understand one another. Cause at the end of the day, we are all here together sharing 1 world. It's getting smaller and smaller with every passing year. And as our worlds get closer and closer to eachother, I pray that we can look across at eachother without fear or hatred or malice and understand that we are one family.

    "Talking without speaking" as the deeper meaning of people talking about things that are so frivolous, nothing real or deep or connective with anotjer, just superficial things. And "hearing without listening" as the deeper meaning of...even when someone "does" say something of meaning, trying to connect to something real, no one 'hears' them and what they are really saying. They hear the words and react without feeling what the person really meant. For instance when someone is getting bullied and feeling so alone...so many of them reach out, but no one really hears them, then after they have passed on, realize all the times the person tried reaching out to them and no one really heard what they were trying to say. Most people live on the surface of existence, not really "connecting" to anything or anyone around them. That is a huge way that technology has hurt our society. We are too in our phones. We need to put them down and make real human connection with each other. THAT is what makes this life worth living. At the end of our life...it will be the ONLY thing that matters...our connections with the people in our lives. Too many dont realize that until faced with it. There is NOTHING in this world that can bring more joy than a deeply honest connection to another living soul or souls. You know how when a room is so quiet that it actually makes a white noise kind of sound in your head...that is the sound of silence. When nothing is real and connecting to our souls...that sound is deafening.

    For me, this song is about what happens when we are disconnected from each other - we lose the ability to truly hear each other and get caught up in chasing 'neon gods' of artificiality. Simon and Garfunkel's version always felt more wistful and melancholy (you should hear it, if only to know the source material, plus they were awesome). But I love the raw power of Disturbed's version, you can feel the emotions.

    This song was written in response to the JFK assasination and was about people not being able to communicate emotionally with each other. It was amazing in its original form by Simon and Garfunkel. David Draiman of Disturbed made it it his own in this beautiful cover but did it with so much respect. Such an awesome song with so much meaning and it will be forever timeless. I'm glad you got to experience the power of this song and I wish more people could as well! Songs like this could change alot of people's lives and outlooks. Too bad most music these days has little to no meaning.

    • @KurNorock
      @KurNorock 5 лет назад +2

      I don't know about that. The original sounds like a fairly upbeat folk song to me. I never thought the way Simon and Garfunkel sang the song fit the lyrics at all. I much prefer the Disturbed version.

    • @foxymacadoo
      @foxymacadoo 5 лет назад +3

      Simon and Garfunkel’s original version is a folk song, which was their style and more suited to the times. I grew up listening to the original and I like Simone and Garfunkel and their version but I always felt something was missing. Disturbed’s cover found that something and I, personally prefer it over the original version. When I first heard Disturbed’s cover of the song I did not know who they were as I am not a heavy metal fan but I loved it! Even though I have read many different explanations of the lyrics, and heard different covers, Disturbed’s cover of this song will mean and affect something different in everyone based on their life experiences. It is that powerful. My all time favourite version without a doubt.

    • @joannablack
      @joannablack 5 лет назад +1

      I feel like the mismatched lyrics and style of the original makes it hit home harder when you actually pay attention to the lyrics

    • @foxymacadoo
      @foxymacadoo 5 лет назад +3

      JoAnna Black The lyrics are the same in both. The lyrics are not mismatched if one understands them. Although there is some changes between the 2 versions the basic melody is the same. Disturbed’s version is more powerful because of how it is done, which is why it is affecting people the way it is. The original is less demanding. More mellow. Beautiful but not as powerful as the new version. The new version makes one feel the music and the words. Make one want to hear the words and see the music. Not sure if that makes any sense or not. Lol

    • @joannablack
      @joannablack 5 лет назад +2

      I'm talking about the stylistic difference. Folk that is more upbeat vs this heavy handed dramatic version. I like the folk version better because the feeling of the music and the lyrics doesn't match.

A radio station got a hold of the song and had played it and it got really popular so they re-recorded song which was used in the movie The Graduate. And Disturbed did the cover as a representation of a how we don't communicate anymore in the human race because we're so into technology
