I'm not crying, it's just that my favorite Nightwish song stuck in my eye..... my favorite live..... young Nightwish is one huge love... they are so sincere, awkward... and very beautiful 🥺 and that vocalization at the end of the song always breaks my heart.. 💔
Thanks, Eric - now you're going off the deep end. The concert is from 2001 from Tampere's Pakkahuone. In terms of atmosphere, it's definitely the best Nightwish concert I've been to (I'm one of the lucky ones who has been to both Tampere and Helsinki in 2005). Marko wasn't in the band yet, so Vilska (lighting technician!!, The Pharaoh Sails to Orion) and Tony Kakko were on stage singing the men's parts. Especially The Pharaoh Sails to Orion - Nightwish meets death metal.. I am smiling with my memories.
That's a low blow. One of my all-time favorite songs. Final weeping guitar solo with which Tarja's vocals sound so beautifully and dramatically in unison is something incredible. That ending often brings tears to my eyes.
This is the closest it’s come, that I know of. Tarja does it with an orchestra years later. I apologise if you’ve already seen it. I know it’s not the original lineup 😊 ruclips.net/video/TvFVdET3ng4/видео.htmlsi=ZxfC1DE8A2S2-Y55
A beautiful depiction of who Tuomas was when he was a young poet: "A wintry eve Once upon a tale An Ugly Duckling Lost in a verse Of a sparrow's carol Dreaming the stars." Sparrow's carol can refer to the beloved Finnish Christmas song or to the "humble" beginnings of his writing.
Tuomas ballads are so beautiful, the ballads he wrote for Tarja, Anette and Floor, love them all. Tarjas voice is though one of the most beautiful in the world.
I just can’t say it enough. Tuomas is a friggin genius. There’s another beautiful ballad in End of an Era written and sung in Finnish. The lyrics are as wonderful as the music. I’m not sure Yukka could help himself, lol
Another great reaction and analysis of the old stuff, I suggest The Riddler, Away, Where were you last night, Moondance, Walking in the air... Aww Nightwish is, was and will be mi favorite band of all time 🤘
Songs like this are the reason I fell in love with NW!!! His fantasy/ Beauty and the Beast composing was simply stunning and Tarja's ability to convey each emotion along with Emppu's weeping guitar take my breath away!!!
I think it was 2000 Tampere. This concert was so important for the band to take bigger step. Original and pure NW. Yes so beautiful ballad by them. Professional analysis again.
Tuomas, the ugly duckling (in his own perspective), gets lost in his own writing, when Tarja, his very own sparrow, lives her dream of being a star on stage. I love this song. Especially this version. Still, I wonder, how Floor would approach it...
I can help wirh dates. This was Wishes from Erernity. Recorded in Tanpere Dscember 29, 2000. Sämmi's last time on screen before being fired and replaced by Marko in 2001. October 21, 2005 is End of an Era (name from the DVD released August 2006), in Helsinki, Finland. Hartwell Arena. The last date of the world tour of ONCE upon a tour .
Beautiful dong and I see you have another early one coming up that I often ask for. There is also a wonderful short version of this on solo Uilleann Pipes played by Troy as the intro to Buenos Aires 2018 Thanks Eric.
Beautiful song and I see you have another early one coming up that I often ask for. BTW, the word "onset". In singing it's about how the vocal chords come together at the start of the note so not about sliding into it as some have said, but more about the way the sound starts (you know this, viewers may not). Thete are three basic types: balanced, glottal and aspirate. Aspirate is a breathy start as the name implies - you'll hear that in, for example, Dimash in SOS; glottal you'll hear in those notes that Floor starts Romanticide with or towards the end of Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean. She doesn't go full glottal - she doesnt lose control - but she IS towards the glottal end of balanced. There is also a wonderful short version of this on solo Uilleann Pipes played by Troy as the intro to Buenos Aires 2018 Thanks Eric.
Another Display of this Band's High Talent driving the Music to more than Sounds. I would Like to have Seen Yuka and Emmpu do a "Battling Run" in a instrumental song Tuomas wrote just for the "two of them" just for the fun of It could have been Glorious. As Always the Rest You where right on Target so I Concur.
Me encantó esta reacción!! Conocí esta canción hoy!!! Y escucho a Tarja todos los días .mala mía.. jaja gracias por explicar tan perfecto..saludos cuide argentina
I recommend checking out the more recent version she did with a full orchestra! ruclips.net/video/TvFVdET3ng4/видео.html Tarja always says she can't stand the way she sounds on the first two NW albums. Oceanborn especially was absurdly ambitious and beyond her capabilities at the time - songs like Stargazers or Passion and the Opera were either never played live or had to be heavily edited... But she eventually came back to them on her own. It feels like it was very personal for her to make sure that people can hear her sing these songs the way they were meant to be heard. Oh, and speaking of Stargazers - you gotta check out her performance in Buenos Aires 2011 if you haven't already! ruclips.net/video/QKHfRSaOK88/видео.html In fact, the entirety of that concert is available here on yt. Tarja has a cult following in Argentina, so the energy is amazing.
"songs like Stargazers or Passion and the Opera were either never played live or had to be heavily edited" mmm what? They played Stargazers and Passion and the Opera many many times with Tarja (both about 60 times or so). I was at a gig in 1999 where they played both.
AFAIK Passion and the Opera was always cut in half. I did misremember about Stargazers though. Difficult to say how well she was doing considering the quality of the few pre-2000 vids here on yt XD I found one that's allegedly from 2004 and it seems to be greatly slowed down. @@ValtteL
@@missingno.2732 I think they cut a "calm part" from the Passion and the Opera because their sets were shorter and they had lot of festivals. First part of the Passion and the Opera fits really well for the live show. What i remember about Stargazers that it wasn't perfect, but that was a good thing, because you heard clearly that she sang it live (those days it was a big deal, there were so many playback artists everywhere). I can't remember about the tempo thing, might have been a little bit slower.
This is one of the more honest and gutting songs in NW's catalogue that isn't from Tuomas's POV. Tarja still performs it to this day, and she's only got better at it and this type of super-sentimental power ballad. I highly recommend the Beauty & Beat version of this if you're ever in the mood to hear a banging metal ballad brought to a full orchestra. Thank you for taking a crack at it, Eric!
Thanks for doing this most beautiful nightwish ballad. Tarja sings this so beautifully. For those who are interested there is a very beautiful rendition of this ballad with a symphonic orchetsra and choir from her Beauty & Beat tour with Mike Terrana.

Beautiful song, melodically and harmonically. The guitar solo was perfect but I always feel disappointed by Tarja's vocals. Her voice is beautiful tonally, but the musicality just isn't there (unlike in Emppu's solo). Is she distracted by the technical aspects of her style of singing? - there always seems to be a lag between when she starts the note and when the sound emerges, so it constantly sounds like she's half a beat behind the rest of the band (that being a recurring issue). I'd love to hear Floor sing this but fear there's some personal/private reason why it hasn't happened.

This is my favorite Tarja song and it must be one of hers as well because years later in her solo career she still performs it. Such a beautiful song.

Let's make it happen! Maybe in Royal Albert Hall?

I get the concept, but it's so corny. If I were 13 and playing D&D, I'd probably be all over it.
I was almost 30, never played D&D for even one second (or anything else similar to that), and I was (and still am) all over it.
