Love this Sekiro lore series and your in-depth delve into my no. 1 favorite game! I really have to praise your high level of detail, intelligent consideration of facts and interpretations, as well as your pleasing voice. I've found your videos just in time for my most recent replay and will binge all of them over the next few days! I'm looking forward to your future explorations of Mibu Village and Fountainhead Palace, in particular :-)

Great video! An interesting watch as always. Thanks for making these! I had a theory while you were talking about the yellow gunpowder. I think that, given the fact that the black gunpowder is actually just a component of gunpowder, that the yellow gunpowder may also just be a component of gunpowder, in this case sulfur. Adding a small amount of sulfur to gunpowder is normal and if I'm understanding correctly, accelerates the burn of gunpowder, making it more explosive. I don't know the history behind when this was discovered so it may or may not fit time wise.
Edit: After looking into it a little more sulfur deposits are common in Japan, though more so in volcanic regions and hot springs. I don't recall Gunfort seeming overly volcanic or seeing any hot springs so I'm not sure if this helps or hurts the theory.
All I can think of now is the Giraffe enemies soaking in a hot spring and panicking when they hear the gunshots foretelling Sekiro's approach.
Only learned today that you can only find specific upgrade materials in their lore-relevant game areas. The amount I learn about this game (that I already claim as one of my favourite games ever) while watching your channel is insane.
I think the Sculptor having Lapiz lazulite is Canon to the story. If you look at the tip of his carving tool it looks like it might have some lazulite on the end of it. Or atleast it looks sorta similar to the whitish effect that's on the lazulite axe. This might explain why all of his sculptors Idols have a blue flame effect on them. Although it could be because of some other reason or just an end of the game upgrade. I don't have any conclusive answers yet.
But the benefits you get from resting at a Sculptors idle could be directly thanks to him. A Demonic monster that brings comfort to the people of ashina who stop by his Idols.
(Although it could also just be a worn out tool he's using)

The nuance in the wax descriptions is interesting. Lipomas are just under the skin, teratomas are most definitely a complex-internal-organ sort of thing.
Pretty ominous how they're implied to lead from one to the other, as if they're being fed and nourished by some outside force of excessive, out of control life force which infects all that it touches. Not to mention they're sometimes found just lying around, as if they were enshrined as immortality worship.
Yellow gunpower might be the Sulphur component of gunpowder. It is one of the important components that is yellow in color.
excellent video as always and today i also learn something new. when i was younger i thought that diamond and adamant was two totally different things. now i know that adamant is just an ancient form of diamond. well smarter every day :3

Yes, it is - 金剛山 [kongo:san], Mt. Kongō. It's a real mountain in Osaka Prefecture.
It's actually not uncommon for fantasy media to use the term adamant rather than diamond when talking about the material rather than individual diamonds.
You go through everything with such a fine tooth comb, don't apologise for digressing, that's why we are all here! Do you plan to go through Elden Ring when this series has wrapped up? I would love for you to give bloodborne the same treatment but ride the algorithm wave with Elden Ring, you deserve the attention and the lore community needs you.

I recently read all the Sekiro translations on your blog and they are really amazing.
One thing that really stood out to me was the wrong translation for the Okinaga's Flame Vent.
I have a doubt about another somewhat similar translation, and I would be glad if you could share your opinion.
"The true sculptor" is mentioned once by Sekijo. Since we don't get any more mentions, I thought it could be a similar case to Okinaga.
I don't know Japanese, so I had to dig in the game files and find the untranslated quote.
Japanese: "真の仏師が、彫られたものだからな…"
English: "It was carved by the hand of the true Sculptor..."
For google translate "彫られたものだからな…" is about carving so I ignored that.
"真の" for the dictionary I checked means true/genuine
"仏師" is Busshi, localized as "Sculptor" for Sekiro
"が" seems to indicate the subject
For what I could understand, there are no article like "the" or "a" in Japanese and it's only based on the context.
Given the context of the game, do you think a better translation would have been ""It was carved by the hand of a true sculptor..."?
I know zero Japanese so I could be making a big mistake and missing something obvious.

That's a tricky one! "The" article could be appropriate if there were other mentions of this person or it was implied that Sekijo: knew him. However, I don't think that Sekijo: actually knew the sculptor that made that specific Buddha statue. The statue is stationary, it probably was there before Sekijo: arrived. Buddha statues weren't really made during Sengoku period, so we'll have to assume that it was made earlier, at least during Kamakura period (1185-1333), the golden age of Japanese Buddha statuary. Since that was hundreds of years ago, I doubt Sekijo: was acquainted with the master.
If there are no mentions of this person anywhere else, and their relationship doesn't have any more context, I am inclined to think that by saying 「真の仏師」Sekijo: just refers to "a true sculptor" meaning "some real Busshi who specialized in Buddha imagery" in contrast to himself, because he is not really a Busshi so the word "true" here is the one with more emphasis.

I've checked the game dialogues and items (via game files) and I couldn't find「真の仏師」in another context but I could be missing something :).
You got me really curious about the statues, I had no idea they mostly weren't made during the Sengoku.
The statue seem to be of "Jūichimen Kannon ", it's very hard to find information since I don't know Japanese.
It could be relevant since, at least for what I understood, he is responsible to save those in the Ashura realm.
There are so many details and specific cultural practices. It's a shame I can't understand most of them.
I've still got many questions but I will ask them when they are more relevant.

I am also replaying the game for the 20th time now lol, and theres this one dialgue that always feels weird to me. It's the one where Sekiro meets Isshin for the first time, I found the japanese text to be this:
Sekiro: 御子様の命にて
Isshin: おう
Sekiro: 伺いたいことが
In english subtitles it was translated as:
S: About the Divine Heir's life...
I: Yes?
S: There is something I wish to ask.
So I was wondering, is Wolf actually so unmannered to not even introduce himself when he meets the old revered kensei Isshin? or was the correct translation supposed to have a different tone?

I think, it is very much in Wolf's character. He doesn't care about introductions throughout the game; maybe, because he doesn't really have a name. When the Sculptor asks him what his name is, Wolf refuses to say. Then the Sculptor goes, "After all, you are no more than a wolf who failed in his duties". Wolf doesn't introduce himself to Ema either when they meet for the first time, he asks her who she is (and not in a polite way) and then keeps silent for the most part. When Isshin-Tengu orders him to name himself, Wolf still doesn't say anything, and that's how Isshin (and the Sculptor before that) knows that he is a shinobi. "You have no name to tell me. Most of you, shinobi, are like that."
The only person Wolf really cares about and talks respectfully to, is Kuro. He doesn't care much about anyone else, especially early in the game, he warms up to others much later. That is why he goes straight to his matter with "Divine Heir's life" with Isshin, because it's very important and Wolf doesn't care for introductions - he already knows that this man is Isshin Ashina. Either this, or he recognized him as Tengu and he already knows Tengu (￣ω￣)
@@shetanislair Dare I say based? based, wolf doesnt even care about introducing himself to the most powerful man of the country lmao. I really love wolf as a character, most say he lacks personality but imho they nailed the way a man grown like an actual trained beast would when interacting with people.

@@shetanislair Please keep doing content like this. It's exactly the things we really don't have much these days so it's really good to have someone making these comparisons, Sekiro is a "new" game so maybe there isn't much differences but old titles like Shin Megami Tensei for PS2 have some ugly differences in english that just doesn't make any sense. People in the US generally hates the idea of learning a new language so it's hard to find someone interested in doing this sort of thing.
We already had others youtubers making some very interesting videos but they went that road of "let me teach you how a game is made even if I never worked with this before" which is kinda sad since we lost some unique content to have this generic coaching game dev model instead that in the end teaches nothing.
