I dont want this to be over :ccc
you've done so much to help us understand Sekiro's world, I hope your vids get the recognition they deserve soon, like billions of views!
On a side note, I wanted to point out a neat little secret:
during the battle with Genichiro in the silvergrass field, if you somehow manage to die 2 times in a row, the second time you resurrect Genichiro has a special dialogue in which he calls Wolf with his name for the first time ever!
Throughout the whole game he always refers to him as Shinobi of the Divine Heir, but in this final battle he calls him Wolf... dunno why but it felt like a special moment to me when I first found out...

Amazing work, as always! It's so surreal that this series is at an end now.
Despite Sekiro obviously taking place in a mostly fictional Japan, I did always get the feeling that if one were to go just beyond the land of Ashina, things would look much more familiar. So it is very interesting to see all the connections to the real sengoku period.
As for what Ujinari was "borrowing", I always assumed he was referring to either the red lump or whatever else gave him the red eyes. Not sure why Isshin would have that, or how he could "borrow" the red eyes (though I'm guessing most likely he knows he will die in the invasion and so he means he knows he won't be keeping it)

Thanks for the great video! I hope you will find other game worlds to explore.
For what I understood, Tokugawa Ieyasu was nominated Minister of the Interior "内大臣" by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1596. After that, he was called "内府", the Chinese name for "内大臣".
He held the title until he became Shogun in 1603.
After Hideyoshi's death in 1598, Ieyasu, as Minister of the Interior, had the highest official court position and was de facto ruler of Japan.
If Sekiro's world timeline is the same as ours, then the game would probably be set sometimes between 1598 and 1603.

I think it might be even later than that. The opening cinematic starts with "In the closing years of the Sengoku Era"; considering the 20+ years timeskip after Isshin takes back the Ashina lands, we might be past the Sengoku period, and into the early Edo?.. The Tokugawa Shogunate has already been established, I think, it's just that Ashina is probably the last smoldering coal from the Sengoku period that needs to be put out.

@@shetanislair Good point about the opening cinematic! Sadly, looking at the Japanese Wikipedia, there isn't a clear date for the end of Sengoku. It could have ended as early as 1568 or 1573 with the start of the Azuchi-Momoyama. The Japanese Wikipedia page stops with the start of the Azuchi-Momoyama, for example.
It's hard to guess which period FromSoftware meant with the cinematic.
In my opinion, since there is no shogun mentioned in game and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the highest authority as the Minister of the Interior until 1603, it would make more sense to be before the founding of the Tokugawa shogunate.
During the Edo period, the minister wasn't a Tokugawa (expect Hidetada for about a year, but he was shogun at the same time), so I think the modified Tokugawa crest wouldn't make too much sense for the minister's troops since he wouldn't be a Tokugawa.
I've read that "内府" is often associated with Ieyasu, especially in historical drama.
      Thank you for the discussion.

Unsure of the accuracy, but food for thought here:
When visiting Emma at Ishin's body, you can see Ishin still holds his sword even in death.
Ishin's body with sword in hand is found in the Divine Heir's room not far from the incense burner.
When fighting Ishin after Genichiro in the silver grass field, during the cutscene Ishin has a large wound on his stomach.
It is possible Ishin sensed the end was near and commit seppuku, and that is why we see the large stomach wound during the cutscene, but no visible neck wound.

As always, I love this series. I'll be sad to see it go but interested in what this channel focuses on following that!
I had always considered the game to take place after the Battle of Suriagehara, with the Ashina clan reduced to barely holding their lands, trying to use the Dragon's Heritage to assert power and maintain independence as the Tokugawa shogunate arose and, finally, subjugated them. I honestly was surprised the game didn't bring up more about the Date clan given the Ashina had such a historical clash with the ever-popular Date Masamune.

Excited for the epilogue, the way you dive into lost or bad translations is entertaining, and thought provoking. I will miss this series. :)

    In this game most of the bosses use the same techniques that wolf acquires;
Owl: shadow rush, shadow fall, chase and slice, firecrackers, mist feathers...
Elite ashina: ichimonji and ashina cross..
    Monks: high monk
    And there are others also

I always assumed The Ashina elite was borrowing the set of armour.

Since he has red eyes, I interpreted it as him "borrowing" a red lump and turning to heresy. Though why Isshin would have one laying around is another question.

@Shetani's Lair could You explain something to Me if You know. At the endgame there's some insubordination amongst the Ashina Shinobi(Nightjar's Red Eye's-White Feathers VS Flamed Shurikarma-Black Feathered Elite's) on the lower rooftops, any reasons to why that is? Don't worry You've seem to answered it at 14:50 thanks.
