Make Sephiroth take turns while Hazard just says "What a dumb idea, why should I wait when I've got an opportunity right now?" So the boss uses turn-based RPG mechanics but you the player are not constrained in the same way
I played this back in the day, and the gameplay is so generic, repetitive and dull it becomes a total slog after the first couple hours. In a lot of ways it’s like a somewhat less cringey and misogynistic version of Duke Nukem Forever, perfectly competent on a technical level but thinks it can coast solely on a “too cool for the room” attitude and a handful of cheesy one-liners.
There is a sequel to this game called Matt Hazard: Blood, Bath and Beyond that was released digitally on the PS3 and Xbox 360. It's a 2D side scroller.
It's only now, 13 years later, thanks to your use of the comma, that it clicked that the title is a play on 'Bed Bath & Beyond'! Jesus, how did I miss that??
This looks like the kind of game that most people forget completely, but there’s probably a bunch of people who really love it - and probably someone was inspired by this to make their own indie game playing with the same concepts.
I’d wager the only accurate part of your comment is that most people forgot Eat Lead existed (assuming they even knew it existed in the first place). And if they do remember it, it’s probably from seeing dozens of copies in the bargain bin every time they went to Gamestop rather than actually playing it. That’s how I discovered it, I found it brand new for like $10 at Walmart maybe a year after it came out. Spent a weekend beating it (the runtime’s less than 15 hours) then tried selling it to Gamestop, but they wouldn’t take it because they still had a bunch of new copies they couldn’t get rid of. From what I’ve been able to find it sold less than 50,000 units, and if it has any kind of fanbase then they’ve been extremely quiet for the past 14 years.
I always took the Marathon logo to be a nod to Konami. They sometimes used both a red background with a flick at the end (kinda looked like a knife blade) and also had that double -bacon strip- helix type logo so seemed a combination of both of those. Plus with the "25 year" timeline then MGS wasn't far off that and by that point Snake had appeared in other games (Ape Escape and MGS had a crossover in each brand, for example) and was an action game star "face" of the company so fit as an example to parody.
I'd argue Max Payne is a parody while taking itself (mostly) absolutely seriously. There's a few parody jokes in it, but it's dry and played seriously and it absolutely works. Not to mention that fourth wall break during the drug trip sequence where Max sees he's in a video game.
A parody? Max Payne was supposed to be a parody? If that series was a parody, that takes itself seriously, they did a great job. Because I couldn't tell the difference. I thought it was a serious shooter game series. But the awful movie with Mark Ruffalo(or was it Mark Wahlberg?) missed the point, and just looked like a bootleg version of itself, although I think Marky Mark didn't do too bad as Max Payne, just not great...or anything nearing a competent movie. But then again, MOST video game movies completely miss the point, like Doom, ALL of the live action Resident Evil movies, the Silent Hill movies, the second MK movie(not the first one because they nailed that one), the crappy Uncharted movie with Tom Spider Man as Nathan Drake, and Mark Whalberger as Victor "Sully" Sullivan. Which doesn't make any sense. Tom Holland was way too young to be Nate, and Mark Whalberg wasn't old enough to be Sully. Seriously, Whalberg should've been Drake, and Holland should've been nowhere near the movie. But the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movies got the characters right, surprisingly enough. At first, you think that while Jim Carey is talented, that he may not be the best guy out there to play Dr. Eggman, but nope, he proved people wrong, and completely nails Eggman's personality perfectly. Not sure about Keanu Reeves being Shadow the Hedgehog, but that could work, if they do it right.
@@shawnfields2369 well, noir as a genre has been so overdone and replicated today that it's almost impossible to do a true noir story without making it a parody in some way. I seem to remember an early idea for Max Payne was it was going to be set in the 70s and be called Dick Justice or something. It evolved into something more sombre set in the modern day (then), but you can still see Dick Justice playing on TV in Max Payne 2. I mean, even think of his name: Max Payne is kind of on the nose. I think Max Payne proves parody is not exclusive to comedy. As for video game movie adaptations; I think movie studios have only just let go of their subconscious belief video games are for kids. Gamers are attracted to well written and compelling stories, just like movie goers. Being a different format doesn't change that 👍
@@Fyrehart97 I agree, video games aren't just for kids, they're for everyone to enjoy. That's why we have this thing called "the ESRB Ratings System", it's supposed to help prevent kids from playing T/M/A-O, rated games. But I guess I never caught on that Max Payne was a parody. I thought it wasn't too serious from the name, but I missed out on the first 2 Max Payne games. The Max Payne games do look like a typical noir detective story, or something out of a cop movie. And since Max was a cop himself, it makes sense. Max Payne also sounds like it could've been a GTA in-game parody, playing on a TV in the games. And yeah, the people making these game based movies need to learn how to make a movie based on something like Resident Evil, Doom(since apparently, getting The Rock to be the main character was their "idea"). And while I like The Rock, and he is a badass, and wouldn't make a bad Doom Guy, his character in the Doom movie was just acting like he was supposed to be in a Gears of War movie, or something. But I love the first MK movie, that had Johnny Cage, Liu Kang and Sonya, and Raiden, and the best live action Shang-Tsung they could've had. But It's a shame they managed to mess up the sequel. It's like catching lightning in a bottle, but trying a second time, only to miss completely. Annihilation had WAAAAYYYYYYY too many characters, and the guy who played Johnny Cage was going to come back and play Johnny again, but when he read the script, and saw that his character DIES in the first 2 minutes of the movie, he refused. And they had to recast literally everyone except for Robin Shou, who returns as Liu Kang. But the others, yes the others, were recast. I didn't even realize that as a kid, because Johnny Cage gets killed by Shao Khan in the opening of the movie, like a chump. I know he has an attitude in the games, but he's not a weakling either. He's like Dan Hibiki from Street Fighter, but less annoying. I know in MK people died violently all the time, but in the movie's opening sequence? That's not even enough time to remember what happened since the last film. And the 2021 MK CG movie was basically just Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion, and nothing else of importance. The people behind these movies have to learn how to make the movies properly, and do their research, not just make it for kids because it's an E-rated game, like Sonic. That's how you do video game based movies right. Like Sonic the Hedgehog, or the first MK movie. Sure, the MK movie was PG-13, but it works because it focuses more on the characters and their journey. It's like playing the games and going through their arcade mode, to get their ending. Also, there's that one guy who gets killed by Goro, and then Johnny does one of his signature moves, the Nut Punch, from the MK games, on Goro, and beats him that way. Sure Goro looked...weird in that movie, but at least we had Goro in an MK movie. And there's also the SF Van-Damme live action movie, which was the late, great, Raul Julia's final performance, as M. Bison, who was easily the best part of that movie, and nails Bison's personality perfectly. But there's also an animated SF2 movie that's actually really good, and was presented like an animated series. Now RE needs something like that, so we can finally leave the live action RE movies in the trash, where they belong.
It's strange to say this for a WGE game, since most are guilty of just doing too much too poorly, but it feels like this game didn't quite learn into its gimmick hard enough. Cranking up the absurdity might have really helped it (including a better non-generic bald guy as a PC).
Having played this, I can confirm that it’s not. The gameplay and level designs are so generic and repetitive it gets boring really fast, and the comedy aspect isn’t clever or funny enough to sustain itself for the 15-ish hour runtime. Do yourself a favor and just look up an LP or cutscene compilation on RUclips.
@@JohnSmith-ox3gy I also agree...but, I played this game when it first came out in 2009. Not great, but not that bad. It's just a failed parody game that stars one of the cast members of "Arrested Development", as the main character, in a sort of Doom/Duke Nukem type game. It's not that bad...it's just not as good as Deadpool's game. Which I also thought wasn't great, but just good. So this game's like a 7, and Deadpool is like, a 7.5. But at least Deadpool got 3 movies, and Matt Hazard couldn't even get ONE movie. And Wade is a way better superhero than Matt. Wade gets to team up with Wolverine for his upcoming movie, Matt Hazard is just irrelevant now. Deadpool managed to get Ryan Reynolds to play him in 3 movies, meanwhile, Matt could only get one of the guys from Arrested Development(which is a great show, fyi, but this game was a few years after it ended), and Nolan North plays Deadpool in the game, so he's clearly making a comeback. Too bad Matt couldn't... but he tried though. It's just that the game tries, but it ultimately fails. And also, Deadpool managed to travel back in time and prevent the worst thing from happening to both himself and Wolverine, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", which also had Gambit, in it too. But it still sucked. But ironically, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game is better than the actual movie it's based on. Not that hard to do, but I mean X-Men Origins Wolverine is pretty damn bad...and Wolverine is my favorite member of the X-Men too. But I'm glad Deadpool prevented the movie from happening, or else we may not have gotten the second Deadpool movie and the Deadpool & Wolverine movie.
Great to see another TJ video before going to bed :) Good fun doesn't equal a good game, but good fun does equal watching you two playing bad games....
Don't think it's fair to have it on worst games ever. It's one of those I would call an honourable failure. There is something there, interesting idea, but flawed. But fair play for trying something.
The other problem with Matt Hazard is that a few boss fights are really awful, especially the final boss. I was unable to complete this game because of that one boss.
I actually didn't mind this game back in the day, it was far from perfect, but it had its moments. If it had some more time in development, it could have been better.
NGL. Kinda want to see this game fully played. Silly game? Yes. Terrible game? Not total trash. Heck, if you guys don't do a playthrough. I may emulate this game myself!
I remember hearing about this game's premise and liking the idea, but hearing nothing about it being poorly executed. Would be neat if a more competent game poking fun at the industry was made.
Same here. I mainly played it because I heard that Neil Patrick Harris and Will Arnett were going to be in it, was one of the main reasons why I wanted to play the game, and I loved playing it for awhile, but I had to take a break because I kept getting annoyed by how frustrating the games cover mechanics can be. But the humor was great, and Will Arnett does a better job than I was expecting, but I already enjoyed his work on Arrested Development, and as Lego Batman, and I enjoyed his work as Bojack Horseman too. And I'm glad the game got a sequel, but this game is forgettable at times, but I wouldn't say it's bad. It's just not very good. Just average at best, like a 6 or 7/10. Because we all know Will Arnett can most definitely do better, but he still killed it as Matt Hazard in this game. I don't regret playing the game either, but I did enjoy the humor and hated the cover mechanics, until I learned how to just blind fire from cover and just got through the game that way. The game's nothing special, but it does try a bit harder than most games that try to do things like this. The humor and voice acting are the best parts. It tries to be like a parody of things like Gex, Duke Nukem, but while it doesn't really "succeed" at parodying those games, it did an alright job for 2009.
I actually liked this game. I had it on the 360 and while it wasn't the greatest game,it had enough charm & wit to be fun and entertaining. A little frustration with the controls but can't have everything!!
Woah! Now this brings back memories, neutral ones but I enjoyed it when I bought it for around £5 in CEX like 10 years ago. I got the 1,000 Gamerscore on my 360 and it was a fun(ish) weekend play alongside other things. The story and basic idea got me hooked, didn't take itself seriously at all but at times on Max Hazard difficulty the game actively fought against itself. Even after all these years the bit that came straight to mind was the Boat Level that had one area on deck that was utter dogshit to do on Max Hazard. I had some good fun but I wouldn't play it again tho... 💖😸💖
To anyone who wants to see a great parody of video games in general without it being pretentious about it I recommend Asterix and Obelix XXL 2 (either PS2 original or remaster for modern platforms). That game has some of the most imaginative parodies and references to mid 2000's video games(cause that's when it came out) I've ever seen, and it's a very fun action platformer. All that under the guise of a cartoon/comic book license video game
@@ulyssesdelamora3856 It was a game-based military simulation project. They became a satellite office in North Carolina for a while, working with our other teams around the world.

@@marcusnelson7026 Yes, he's the main villain of the game, the CEO of Marathon Megasoft. He's also the one who sent Matt on this fake quest to be in his own game in the first place, to try and get him killed.
This game fell into the trap parody games tend to fall into where they reference better material and you realize that those games play sooooo much better. The sidescroller spinoff Matt Hazard game wasn't too bad IIRC.
That could work, but I'm not sure how you'd get that to work. Wouldn't his head get in the way? Or wouldn't it look creepy in 3-D? Not saying replacing Matt Hazard with Bojack Horseman is a bad thing, it's a great idea, actually. Because we STILL haven't gotten a Bojack Horseman game yet...
Bought this game used in 2009 or 10 and thought it was great. Lent it to a friend and he was mad that I “uglied up” his trophy list because it was so bad that he couldn’t bring himself to platinum it and was stuck with a single digit trophy percentage. To each their own , I suppose.
I legit smashed my c-3po 360 controller over the floofing sniper level. The game was ejected, put in case and yes battered to death with my rolling pin/anti-trespasser device. Wow. Great anecdote Fee. Like, here’s a uncomfortable look at my mental health in the 00s 🤭
This game is not bad….. It’s actually really good. The controls aren’t the best, and it can get a bit repetitive, but it’s funny and very enjoyable. Don’t pass this one up because they’re saying it’s bad.
Don't worry, I didn't at the time this game came out, I was 16, and was already a fan of Will Arnett, because of Arrested Development. And because I love parodies. Sure the game could be frustrating at times, but the humor and acting are both on point. And I really enjoyed Arnett's Batman voice throughout the whole game. And I'm glad the game got an actual sequel too. Haven't played myself, but I did enjoy this game. But it's somewhat forgettable at times, but I will say while I was expecting just an okay job, from the people involved with the game, it was a lot better than I expected back in 2009. I'd definitely play the sequel though. And Will Arnett is a great actor/comedian already(like you didn't already know that, from his iconic roles on Arrested Development, and as Lego Batman, and Bojack Horseman, even though that wasn't a thing at the time). But still I agree, not one of their better Worse Games Ever episodes. Not a bad episode, but Matt McMuscles does a better job covering this game.
Helpful hint: If you want to make a spoof/parody of something, make sure that your product is BETTER than the ones you're spoofing. It falls amazingly flat otherwise, since all you're really doing is reminding your audience of a better time to spend their time. The real killer of this game is monotony. Strip away the premise , jokes and the story, and you'll quickly realize how boring it is.
While this is certainly not a good game, it’s far from a worst game ever. Some of the comedy and animations are actually pretty good. And it looks like fun. You are mistaken to compare this to the likes of Superman 64 or Ride to Hell.
This and it’s XBLA follow up are two of my favourite AA games of the Xbox 360 era, I regularly go back as their both backwards compatible, far from the worst games ever, great video junk food like Eurojank RPG’s of yore
Played this game back in 2009, went back and got a Platinum trophy in 2018. Apparently I liked the game then and more recently to go for it. Probably hasn't aged all that well from the look of things. It's the sort of thing I can only really say watching someone else play the game.
The game gets crazier as it goes along, so a bit unfair to end it there. I enjoyed it back then, but it was really of it's time. Parodying contempary games and movies. As most parodies that rely on references they don't age well.
If The LJN Defender was still making videos this would have been a good candidate for innocent until proven guilty. Probably would have gotten a guinnocent.
I had no idea that the voice from the lego batman movie was a reprisal of this game, and I could’ve gone the rest of my life without knowing. Now maybe you will too.
It looks interesting enough that I might want to give it a try just so I can see the entirety of the game. I would also settle for watching someone do a full playthrough
It's not a bad game by any means, but it has a rather simple gameplay and a surprising lack of variety in mechanics. The story and parodies are definitely the best part of this game, in fact I think almost every level had a unique tweak and of course references to other genres and games.
Not if they were doing it right, and didn't do the things Deadpool did already, or take them and do them in a different style, that's not too noticeable. Maybe the game's sequel does this?
Is it a franchise? No, but it pretends to be. It was long, really really long. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID! 11:38 Wasn't he also the villain in Matrix 4? WAAAAAAH TANG! 23:04 He sounds like Schwarzenegger. And don't call me babe. Shoot everything that moves. Yeah that's more like it. Why is the title worst games ever? This seems okay for a game.
The game has potential but the execution is flawed. Like with so many things, if the execution was better, the game could have garnered a cult status. Also that 25 per cent rating was harsh
I managed to get the platinum for this game on ps3, the aim is not smooth and the movement is clunky but the premise of the game is pretty clever, I wish they made a more fluid game with the same concept for newer systems, and with more depth like someone mentioned here, turn based combats, maybe make fun of the simulation genre a little bit. Perhaps a open world like saints row where the towns an regions of the game can be a diffrent genre.
I kept thinking “wow this voiceover sure does sound like will Arnett!” What an odd game. Hollywood pet-project games like this are always weird because they usually have huge ambitions with an emphasis on presentation despite amateurish execution.
I LOVE THIS GAME! It's jank but a classic. I played it at a gaming Lock-in event 13 years or so ago. Had to get a copy right after. It's so off the walls.
The gameplay could definitely be better, but this was a pretty functional game, the only part I rage quit was the damn Kraken boss. The story, of course, was enjoyable.
the story premise of this game was pretty cool. They should have included more game genres. Maybe have a turn-based battle against the Sephiroth-clone
Make Sephiroth take turns while Hazard just says "What a dumb idea, why should I wait when I've got an opportunity right now?"
So the boss uses turn-based RPG mechanics but you the player are not constrained in the same way

But I'm glad Deadpool prevented the movie from happening, or else we may not have gotten the second Deadpool movie and the
Deadpool & Wolverine movie.
Personally, I consider the PS1-generation as the border of "retro", though I do understand why people also call the PS2-generation retro.
Great to see another TJ video before going to bed :) Good fun doesn't equal a good game, but good fun does equal watching you two playing bad games....
The fact that Ben name dropped Aunty Donna made me very happy. I'm sure Broden would approve
Does Ben know that everything's a drum?
Don't think it's fair to have it on worst games ever. It's one of those I would call an honourable failure. There is something there, interesting idea, but flawed. But fair play for trying something.
Seeing Aunty Donna on Triple Jump was like seeing your teacher at the grocery store.
Hilarious?
When I was a kid I almost bought this from GameStop but the lady working there told me to buy fallout 3 instead. I'm so glad she was working that day.
30:47 Look at that outhouse! Aww, Ben and Peter missed an opportunity to include a "Somebody Once Told Me" joke
gameplay might be bland but the story's premise is actually interesting
The concept is the only good thing about it, especially when you consider it predates the similarly themed Wreck-It Ralph by three or four years.
The other problem with Matt Hazard is that a few boss fights are really awful, especially the final boss. I was unable to complete this game because of that one boss.
@@MoskHotel Is the sequel to this game any better then this one?
Hilarious that Sonny Tang Is dressed exactly like Sho-Nuff from The Last Dragon lmao
Maybe his outfit is supposed to be a reference to that movie?
Nothing super obvious with the Marathon logo? Cmon guys its the early 2000's Konami logo
Wasn't expecting Aunty Donna to be referenced here, I was pleasantly surprised!
As bad as it is I think the idea of a “spoof” game is fantastic
I remember hearing about this game's premise and liking the idea, but hearing nothing about it being poorly executed. Would be neat if a more competent game poking fun at the industry was made.
Played it, beat it, it was fine. I don't regret playing it. That's about it 🤷♂
28:50 "And a bit of a pain in the flippin' arse!" says Peter, right as he shoots a man in the behind.
Years ago, I hired 3 of the programmers who worked on this game... they were actually quite good.
What did you make with them?
@@ulyssesdelamora3856 It was a game-based military simulation project. They became a satellite office in North Carolina for a while, working with our other teams around the world.
@Gaterooze Ink that's actually pretty sick, my brother was a tanker in the army and told me that he went through some kind of simulation working with the different operations in a tank before hitting the real deal
This was a fun game. I thought it was a great premise too. Honestly would love a sequel riffing on the past decade since it's released.
Voiced by Wil Arnet? Amazing!
Neil Patrick Harris apparently voices a character too.
I need a mod of this where the model of Matt Hazard is replaced with Bojack Horseman.
Honestly frustrating how bad of a shot Peter is.
Bought this game used in 2009 or 10 and thought it was great. Lent it to a friend and he was mad that I “uglied up” his trophy list because it was so bad that he couldn’t bring himself to platinum it and was stuck with a single digit trophy percentage. To each their own , I suppose.
I bought this game about 10 years ago for € 1 for the xbox 360 and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
This game must have been in arrested development.
I LOVE THIS GAME!! The jankiness, the achievements, everything wrong with this game makes it that much more fun for me. In a word: Chaos!!
I remember picking this up and thought it was okay.
This game is awesome! It’s a rare example of a game so bad it’s good - but the game is also aware. Love it!
I hate this game. It’s basically just Duke Nukem Forever with less cringey edgelord “humor” and a slightly more clever concept.
Bit too ‘ok’ for worst games ever this one.
I liked this game when I first played it
very cool concept/story. Deserves a reboot from a capable team
Yeah it does, do you know any capable teams out there willing to help Matt Hazard out?
Worst thing about this is that I sent this game in during the first tat appeal 3 years ago! God I’m old, thank you for playing my game!😁
I remember having fun with this game and it's sequel Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond
Marathon might be a reference to the game Marathon. I believe it was the first FPS ever.
I think I love this game. Knowingly bad, stupidly funny, what's not to love? Remaster, please!😂
Real OGs have been subscribed since the channel was called "Double Jump"
Game doesn't look like the worst but the video and people playing it are just kinda blah, flat tone most of the time
This and it’s XBLA follow up are two of my favourite AA games of the Xbox 360 era, I regularly go back as their both backwards compatible, far from the worst games ever, great video junk food like Eurojank RPG’s of yore
I honestly love the humor of this game picked this up as a rental from Hollywood video as a kid and loved it a little hidden gem in my opinion
Played this game back in 2009, went back and got a Platinum trophy in 2018. Apparently I liked the game then and more recently to go for it. Probably hasn't aged all that well from the look of things. It's the sort of thing I can only really say watching someone else play the game.
Marathon was probably a nod to Bungie's early efforts in the genre
Didn’t expect the game to un intentionally predict splatoon years later lol
Isn't there a game called Marathon from...
The story concept sounds great though
The game gets crazier as it goes along, so a bit unfair to end it there.
I enjoyed it back then, but it was really of it's time. Parodying contempary games and movies. As most parodies that rely on references they don't age well.
This one hurts, because I still love it
me to felt quiet inque at the timee of release
This game was super fun! Wasn't meant to be taken serious at all
If The LJN Defender was still making videos this would have been a good candidate for innocent until proven guilty. Probably would have gotten a guinnocent.
The voice sounds like Steve blume.edit it's will Arnett. Suprising.
I had no idea that the voice from the lego batman movie was a reprisal of this game, and I could’ve gone the rest of my life without knowing. Now maybe you will too.
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard is like a big budget version of Comic Jumper.
It looks interesting enough that I might want to give it a try just so I can see the entirety of the game. I would also settle for watching someone do a full playthrough
I remember playing this in the days when you hired hard copies of games for Love film and actually enjoying it 😄
Same but blockbusters
I come back after 6 months and they still haven't gotten any better at playing video games. Is it a lost cause?
Yes, me from a year ago, it is.
Okay, this game might not be a Triple-A, maybe not even a Double-A, but come on, "Worst Games Ever" seems a bit harsh on it, no?
Really enjoyed this game back in the day. But I can't deny it's pretty rough.
Completely understand and I agree.
It's not a bad game by any means, but it has a rather simple gameplay and a surprising lack of variety in mechanics.
The story and parodies are definitely the best part of this game, in fact I think almost every level had a unique tweak and of course references to other genres and games.
I think taking another run at this could really work better today with the technology, but everyone would just call it a Deadpool knock-off.
I actually really loved this game due to it's premise, I kept playing just for the story, it would be ace if they rebooted this properly.
Toilet Gun: BANG! And the dirt is gone
I kept thinking “wow this voiceover sure does sound like will Arnett!” What an odd game. Hollywood pet-project games like this are always weird because they usually have huge ambitions with an emphasis on presentation despite amateurish execution.
Is Sting voiced by Daran Norris?
This game is amazing, bad but amazing too
I LOVE THIS GAME! It's jank but a classic. I played it at a gaming Lock-in event 13 years or so ago. Had to get a copy right after. It's so off the walls.
If Matt Hazard looks like any member of Aunty Donna it’s Mark not Broden
It really seems like a good time.
Its actually a decent game with a decent parody, should Play Damnnation ionstead thats trash.
The sequel was pretty enjoyable by comparison - blood bath and beyond.
The gameplay could definitely be better, but this was a pretty functional game, the only part I rage quit was the damn Kraken boss. The story, of course, was enjoyable.
