Part of me really thinks this game was waaaay ahead of its time. If a competent version of the game came out on current gen or last I feel I’d play the hell out of this
yeah It's basically like an F-Zero game but fully in space. Keep the crazy campy story and just give the graphics a nice clean up and overhaul and it could be a hella solid racing game.

The doofuses who made this tried too hard with the story, and weird gravity mechanics, and being on sort of rails, in tunnels, so it just feels like they made a more boring, restrictive version of f-zero. They spent all their budget on that hot late 90s CG.

surprised you guys didnt mention that a third of the characters in this game including Barlow Lenz are voiced by Jon St. John, The voice of Duke Nukem/Big The Cat.
they were probably 5 when Duke Nukem 3D came out. still, i'm shocked as well, since i'm pretty sure that they teach you in history class (in america at least) who voiced the Duke of Nukem.

My personal theory is that Gary Rhodes needs to keep racing as he's stuck in some sort of Quantum Leap plot, hoping that every teleport would be the leap home.

The sheer amount of hours I tried to force myself to enjoy this game as a kid... lol. One of those tragedies where you buy a game as a gamble, since it wasn't easy to find videos/good reviews of games back then, especially with dial up, and end up with a crappy game. Then you have to tryyyyyyy and enjoy it. Great video.
I had a different Wipeout clone by Mindscape called CyberSpeed it was very similar in quality lol I wish I still had it so I could send it in.
I don't think CyberSpeed could be considered a clone since it released a few weeks before Wipeout did, but it would be a perfect game for this YT series since it is a pretty bad game. I mean, who thought an on-rails racing game was a good idea? Soundtrack is good though.

You guys should play "Amy" on PS3. Very terrible zombie game where the whole game is basically one long escort mission. I wanted to send it to you guys but can't find any online shops that sell it, probably because it was a very very bad game
The rails reminds me of certain sections of Super Mario 64. The first level in particular looks like the tunnel to the underwater town in Wet Dry World.
I have fond memories of this game.

I love the idea that the first racer from Earth immediately turned around at the starting line and flew into the sun for no reason.
Literally turds racing through the pipes once you flush them.
Now its pretty much my turn to go: 'Hey, I've played this game a lot as kid and i loved it!'
Well, Oddly enough, this was the first ever game I've booted on a recently aquired Playstation with a dozen of CDs. At the time, the jump from 16bit (mostly platformers) to fully 3D was groundbreaking, and even tho this game aesthetics way too generic, at the time I found it so 'rad', as a 90 nerdy kid would say.
Even more odd was the added fact that I completely forgot the name of this game, and had it lost on my sub-conscious up until re-discovering it on this video. As with most 'worst than most' game, it is not often that you see mentions to a game like this anywhere. Thanks WGE for proving me I had not live a delusional experience (Haven't I? ) lol
In the intro i've thought for a second that Captain Picard's voices was gonna pop out and say "Space the final frontier...."

Reminds me of those miscellaneous Dreamcast games that had a lot of depth for a shitty game and tons of story but the game itself was quite bland or basic.
Such as? Most Dreamcast games are flashy and lack story and depth. Tons of short arcade games and not enough original adventure/exploration games.

Since you mentioned that the story sounded like the plot to a kids' cartoon: the game's plot is actually similar to the French-Japanese cartoon "Oban Star-Racers," which is a vastly superior product to "Starwinder." The game does have a certain charm to it, though; the cutscenes have aged, uh, poorly, but they're entertaining in a cheesy, bile-fascination way, and it looks like the writers tried to have some fun with it.
