    Good stuff. One of the other posts already alluded to the anvil strength on your vise; I'd only add that it appears you are losing a good bit of your hammer energy to table bounce as well. Not trying to nit pick, your video is great. I like your presentations, perhaps a video of you building your own anvil might be a potential future project.

    I read and or watched some where that if you submerge your metal in water after its cooled too much to mold prior to reheating to forge further, prevents the metal from becoming porris and soft. Also that the sudden cooling of the metal makes steel and other metals stronger. Is this true?

    Just so you know, that cast vise isn't going to hold up to that pounding and will flake off in chips. I'd recommend some rr track or an anvil. Railroad track is easy to find and cheap. Anvils are easy to find if you live up north. But starting is the most important. I had a coal forge till I used your design for a forge

    you forgot one thing... temper it or it will eventually break ,but great work !

    • @clkindred
      @clkindred  8 лет назад +2

      +J Lynn I did not harden this piece, I assumed the steel was not high carbon and therefore would not respond to heat treating. I let the piece heat soak and then shut the flame off letting the piece slowly cool over the course of a few hours, should be well annealed and not brittle.

  • @Deksudo
    @Deksudo 8 лет назад

    Less useful? You turned a bolt into a mini-axe! Decorating your room could be an use for it. Or, you can maybe coat it with copper (electrolysis), put a hole at the bottom (to make it into a keychain) and inscribe it with obscure alphabets. The amount of work you put in that is priceless but people would buy that if you put a price tag on it.

  • @robrat5162
    @robrat5162 10 лет назад +10

    I could spend hours or days making something like your forge and one so called pointless trinket and never use the forge again and be extremely satisfied. time, money and effort well spent. "the point" it is to do it.

  • @s14slide
    @s14slide 10 лет назад

    Would it hurt or help the forge contain heat to make a plug for one of the ends? Or would you call it completely unnecessary? It looks like it's getting the heat into the parts, but the less time it takes to get the heat in there, the less fuel it takes to do so. Just being inquisitive?

    • @clkindred
      @clkindred  10 лет назад

      I did make an experimental door plug for the back seen at 4:20 and it did seem to help. It's something I'm still working on to find an effective and elegant solution. If nothing else, trapping the heat in will help the entire forge get to an even temp. Helpful when heat treating thin pieces like blades.

    very nice! may I can ask you how to avoid the metal imperfection/bended/scratches you had at the end ? is because you let it cooling too slowly ?

    • @clkindred
      @clkindred  9 лет назад +1

      goten6 The "cold shuts" come from allowing the metal to fold over on itself while forging. You might think the metal would consolidate like modeling clay would, but the metal is not clean enough and hot enough for that to happen, unless you brought the metal up to forge welding temp and kept the metal clean with a flux.

  • @Jesaiah
    @Jesaiah 9 лет назад

    I wonder what temperature you could possibly reach in this forge ... I would guess the limit is somewhere around 600 - 650 degrees ...?

    • @clkindred
      @clkindred  9 лет назад

      Christian Wessely The lowest melting point component is the sodium silicate binder which, is not sodium silicate after fully cured. It decomposes into silicon dioxide, melting point of about 1600 degrees C or 2900 degrees F. The perlite will melt but it is supposed to, it leaves voids like a sponge in the aluminum oxide lining.

      Benjamin Tosto Have not tried that, torching it seems to be the easiest way and I have not felt the need to try other methods. If the shape was set by a form or mold that was plastic than co2 would be a good option.

    Are the fragments flying off some kind of flux? If so, what are you using?

    • @clkindred

      It's scale forming due to the metal oxidizing in the air.

    • @amosz5726
      @amosz5726 9 лет назад +1

      Ouch, so you're actually losing a good deal of mass.

    • @clkindred
      @clkindred  9 лет назад

      Kind of, the metal is only a portion of the mass in the scale, the rest is oxygen from the air, so some of the mass actually forms out of thin air.

    • @amosz5726
      @amosz5726 9 лет назад

      It was going to be a bottle opener but I decided to leave it like it is, as a neat little trinket.

      If you can get you hands on a section of a railroad track, that is a good starting anvil. You can probably find some at a scrap metal recyclers.
