Burke and Nonis also got Kadri, Riely , Lupul, Gardiner ,JVR, Etc... So technically they still have a ways to go before that era is truly done . Oh ya Nylander was also a Nonis pick !
+David McCalla I honestly don't think Burke did bad. It was his team he put together in 2013. Nonis just got the credit. I mean in 2013 the leafs were tough to play against. They fought, they hit, the had a better penalty kill then previous years, and they just played good. Sure it was a half season, but that was the most exciting year in a long time. Then when Nonis took over he pretty much threw that team away.
Kyle Lacoste I agree they were tough to play against in 2013 but then again it was a lockout season if it was a real season they wouldn't have made it in the playoffs. Burke was okay in his time here but the Kessel trade was really bad and he setback the team. Nonis totally destroyed the team with his stupid signings. I am just glad both of them are gone.
I won't be stupid and say Burke's trade for Kessel was a good one. Seeing how we gave up a few good draft picks. But still isn't as stupid as when we traded Rask for Raycroft.
+George Cole Me 2. I thought it might be on his page tho. Tsn radio guys have said that lupul and Bozak are next in line.. Will be waiting for His Trade Video's if it happens.. Btw Steve, Take it easy on those red Bulls.. LOL!
Don't hate Dion but I was so happy when I saw he got traded. And that we didn't retain!!!! LOL i thought we were stuck with him! Lou and Shanahan are GENIUSES!!!! TANK ON!
1. I LOVE your enthusiasm! 2. I believe this video was 6 years ago, and NONE of those 9 are Ottawa's pride, prestigious players that they hoped for, INCLUDING Phanuef! 3. I think you're incredible, love your videos, don't stop
heres what most people dont understand. the leafs didnt make this trade for any of the players they acquired. they made this trade to get rid of phaneufs contract. it was going to hinder us going forward. now we likely have room to sign stamkos, if management wants
Kebabscout yeah thats just a cherry on top. getting rid of the contract is much more significant though as it allows a lot more cap flexibility in the future. this makes signing stamkos a real and maybe even logical possibility
288theabe yeah i dont really want him but its hard to ignore the hype, especially after this trade. i dont think he fits in with our rebuild plan. i dont think management is going to rush the rebuild by signing a superstar whos already leaving his prime
+Christopher Camden I don't completely agree but you make a good point. While one of their goals was to rid themselves of Phaneuf's contract, it was also to get the best return for him. If they were only interested in moving him he would have likely been gone awhile go. They finally were offered a deal they could not say no to and pulled the trigger. He would have stuck around longer if the deal wasn't right. This trade breaks down to a top 4 dman in Phaneuf for a 2nd rounder and a promising prospect in Tobias Lindberg. Freeing his cap space was at the top of the list though. Oh and in regards to Stamkos he actually has to make it to free agency because we can even begin to try and sign him :)
While I think Lou made a lot of mistakes in his last few years in NJ, there's still one thing he's never lost his touch at: Trades. Congrats, Leafs fans. This team is heading in the right direction.
It's amazing when you watch a video like this now and realize just HOW much of a turnaround our roster went through. Hearing names like Shawn Matthias, Brad Boyes, P.A. Parenteau, not to mention Cowen, Michalek and Greening, the latter two being with the Marlies the entire time, save for a few Leaf games... and that's not mentioning the others, like Grabner, Bernier, et cetera. It's shocking.
Also Steve, really liked your take on this. I kinda expected a "Leafs won this trade!" reaction but it was pretty level headed and fair. Can't wait for tonight's SDP!
Loved it, all of these 'insiders' that they like to call themselves had not a single clue this was going to happen! That's another reason to love that move!
In addition to EK being the second highest paid defenseman on the sens, probably worth noting that Nathan Horton is currently the highest paid player on the leafs.
1. Only two players involved in this trade remain with their respective organizations. A) Emeli Rasanen (the 2017 2nd round pick) and B) Colin Greening. With the Marlies signed to an AHL contract 2. Of the 10 players involved only Phaneuf and Tobias Lindberg (6 NHL GP) played any NHL games 3. Phaneuf has 1 point in 17 games to start this season. His first point coming in the 17th game against the Leafs (of course) A little surprising. IMO the Leafs win this trade eaisly with 5.25 million cap saved and Emeli Rasanen
+Axel Kanyandekwe I want Rielly as captain, wouldn't mind Komarov as captain just for a bit (maybe two years) if management decides they want to keep him.
That’s how I FELT NOW with the Sens dumping everyone but it’d part of a rebuild first time I ever experienced a rebuild part of it is Tearing it apart and being bad for years to be a contender
+P Carnochan That is why this trade was made. Jared Cowen's contract is worth more dead than alive, and Greening can also be bought out at a 2/3ds rate or be buried with the Marlies.
leafs will still lose most of their games. I've been watching the leafs lose since 1994-95, it's become a ritual I suppose. Although congrats on getting rid of phaneuf.
Haha and Nylander did end up getting called up to the Leafs at the end of that season as did Kapanen. Since the Leafs sucked, they decided to give the kids a chance and the Marlies were stacked, large in part thanks to that trade, and won the Calder Cup two seasons later
+OneTimer No way, Bozak is a character guy, great faceoff taker, decent point producer. No way you buy him out, if the trade makes sense he isn't untouchable, move him, but don't actively try to move him.
OneTimer sure but just because he is 30 doesn't mean you buy him out. If you want to get full value out of him then you trade him sooner rather than later, but he is more valuable on this team. Veteran, character guy who will teach the young kids how to act in the NHL on the ice, in the dressing room, and with the media. Bozak does all of that well. You don't want the Leafs to ship out every vet, or else there will be no one to set an example for the kids, we'd turn out like the Oilers.
Leafs got way worse without Phaneuf, but getting rid of his contract and getting value from it in Lindberg and a 2nd round pick is amazing for the Leafs going forward.
As a huge Oshawa Generals fan, Im fired up Tobias Lindberg is reuniting with DJ Smith. DJ really got the best out of Lindberg last year. Can bet DJ was huge in them adding Lindberg to this trade
Grosso FTW his game is 100% built on speed. He was by far the fastest player on the Gens memorial cup winning team last year. DJ Smith (now Leafs assistant coach) got him playing so much more physical though than when he originally came to Oshawa
We The North Dude thats awesome. At worst he's a big sweedish truck that keeps Nylander safe, and produces for the Marlies, at best he could turn out to be a contributor on the Leafs. Love it.
Grosso FTW he's not the "goon" type that would be put on the ice to protect someone. But I guarantee you he will be able to keep up with Nylander when not many other players could
As a die hard sens fan, this is an epic win for Ottawa. Internal team salary cap, small market, and an emerging Hoffman who Ottawa STOLE in arbitration for 2 mil, there were three guys who needed to go: Greening @ 2.65 Mil/yr who is an ahl player who had one flash in pan year, Michalek @ 4 Mil/yr whose always injured and a bottom six guy, and Jerry, oh Jerry, never has a guy looked so lost and confused in a pro sports game (@ 3.1 mil/yr). Now we can re-sign Hoffman, and what remains is basically a 2nd and potential top 6 guy for a reasonable top-4 D with experience, and then those other guys, who I'll agree, are most likely going to be irrelevant. I was worried about the sens being able to get rid of those guys, I didn't think anyone would take them, the fact they moved them all in one deal is magical.
+smashvillenashville Cowen's ability means nothing to this trade.... Its that they were stuck with Phaneufs long deal for 6 years and now everyone they're getting will be off their books after next year
+smashvillenashville Cowen isn't in the Leafs' long-term plans. He's useful for a buyout. Phaneuf for Cowen is a huge upgrade for the Sens, while the Leafs get buyout candidates.
+smashvillenashville I don't know about that. Babcock managed to turn the Pilon into someone somewhat effective, so who knows what he could do for Cowen.
+Jerome Samuel The thing is, the Leafs have money. We're willing to pay Nathan Horton millions of dollars not to play for our team. We can afford to bite the bullet with your crap players. Sens on the other hand have very little money and have to deal with Dion's contract for the next 5 years. Have fun :)
never going to happen but whats funny is, if the Sens bump the Pens out of the playoffs. That means the Leafs helped themselves lose the first round draft pick from the Kessel trade. Great trade for both teams
Clearly, the Leafs need more than hockey talent to get into the playoff. Perhaps they need a complete trade of their suits and leave the players alone.
I can chug too. An entire propane tank.
+Hank Hill Buffalo GM Mode not lit enough yet eh?
+Hank Hill lmfao
That Italian mother reference hahahahahah im done
+BonesOnDemand I was thinking the same thing lol.
+BonesOnDemand Absolutely brilliant
Hey bones
+BonesOnDemand So accurate.
Bones u watch Steve too
Who's here after Phaneuf was traded to LA?
Aric Cua Yea
Yep, and now that he's bought out it's even funnier
The rebuild is fucking real. The Burke,Nonis, Phil, and Phaneuf era is finally over. Thank you Lou and Shanny
BUDDY IT IS NOT THE GMS, THE COACHS OR THE PLAYERS FAULT….ITS THE MARKET….YOU GUYS MICROSCOPE EVERY PLAYER!
When you don't do any work in programming class and just go to as many hockey blogs possible
2:45 One of those maybes turned out to be Carter Verhaeghe who is haunting the leafs right now!!!
I knew he was gonna start freaking out. When I saw the trade I knew there was gonna be an awesome video.
+George Cole Me 2. I thought it might be on his page tho. Tsn radio guys have said that lupul and Bozak are next in line.. Will be waiting for His Trade Video's if it happens.. Btw Steve, Take it easy on those red Bulls.. LOL!
+cory homer If Lou Lamoriello can trade Lupul, a parade should be thrown.
Don't hate Dion but I was so happy when I saw he got traded. And that we didn't retain!!!! LOL i thought we were stuck with him! Lou and Shanahan are GENIUSES!!!! TANK ON!
+Joel Velimir I am so pleased with our management, they are magicians who make cap problems disappear! PLEASE Lupul be next!
Grosso FTW i honestly thought clarkson and phaneuf would require retentions. Our management are gods. What a world of difference from burke and nonis!
Joel Velimir Amen brother :D
How’s that going for ya
"yes mr lamonchelo" i was dying!
i actually hate it when people drink so loudly lol. its like nails on a chalkboard
1. I LOVE your enthusiasm!
2. I believe this video was 6 years ago, and NONE of those 9 are Ottawa's pride, prestigious players that they hoped for, INCLUDING Phanuef!
3. I think you're incredible, love your videos, don't stop
One of those 9 players was Carter Verhaege..
The first thing I thought when I heard the news was "I can't wait to hear Dangle's reaction"
heres what most people dont understand. the leafs didnt make this trade for any of the players they acquired. they made this trade to get rid of phaneufs contract. it was going to hinder us going forward. now we likely have room to sign stamkos, if management wants
+Christopher Camden But they did get an above-average prospect and a high pick. I would count that as a win for Phaneuf's ridiculous contract.
Kebabscout yeah thats just a cherry on top. getting rid of the contract is much more significant though as it allows a lot more cap flexibility in the future. this makes signing stamkos a real and maybe even logical possibility
+Christopher Camden Let's hope we don't get Stamkos....
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO SINCE THE SECOND I SAW THE NOTIFICATION.
I’m here 4 years later to laugh at the laughs continued futility.
0:02 I like to imagine this is what Steve does before recording every LFR
If nothing else, Cowen will play better than Marincin did tonight.
Also Steve, really liked your take on this. I kinda expected a "Leafs won this trade!" reaction but it was pretty level headed and fair. Can't wait for tonight's SDP!
Oh god, he had a red bull. Can't wait for tonight's podcast.
Nice product placement!
Your entire writing staff should be commended,Steve! As this video was so on point! Hilarious and informative :) Happy Tuesday, people :D
Also, Karlsson being the second-highest paid defender on the Sens tells you just how amazing that contract is.
He's like the Superwoman of hockey or simply the male version 😂😂😂
As soon as I heard the news I was waiting for this video
I see Steve chug the Red Bull and my jaw drops knowing the calamity about to happen.
Dion was captin like in the dressing room
Nah nah nah. Nah nah nah. Ehhhhhhhhhh good bye!
Loved it, all of these 'insiders' that they like to call themselves had not a single clue this was going to happen! That's another reason to love that move!
Watching this Dec 2018, this was huge!
That Red Bull chug was EPIC...
In addition to EK being the second highest paid defenseman on the sens, probably worth noting that Nathan Horton is currently the highest paid player on the leafs.
Why am I watching Steve chug a red bull? 😂
This guy is just awesome. I have just seen him for the first time and I'm really impressed.
And enjoy every single LFR ever since.
Pylon was brutal at this point. $7 million dollar Orange Cone.
1 year later Ottawa and Phaneuf are on the brink of the cup final and I couldn't be happier with that trade.
wow. I never expected that trade
+Mr. English Broomstick And to the budget team Ottawa too, crazy
+Grosso FTW nice you are a fan of soccer, panzy away panzy
Anthony F Vlogs/Rants Have fun with Dion's contract bud
"Yes, Mr. Limoncello..."

A little surprising. IMO the Leafs win this trade eaisly with 5.25 million cap saved and Emeli Rasanen
please drink more redbull for your Matthews video
Steve Dangle you must realize that a cup of coffee will do the same as that idiot energy drink
I mean, the Sens made it to the conference finals this year so yeah, he's been working out.
Been watching a chain of Steve Dangle videos because I'm suffering from hockey wirdrawal 😫. Now I feel better 😊.
Wow. Red Bull, coffee, Nutella seem to be one heck of a combo....
I’m coming here to check on past Steve after he actually wore a helmet this time
Who is going to be the next captain in your opinion ? I'm going with either JVR or Morgan Rielly
+Axel Kanyandekwe I want Rielly as captain, wouldn't mind Komarov as captain just for a bit (maybe two years) if management decides they want to keep him.
Trades this year have been so surprising, I don't think anyone saw them coming.
I think you can say that not just for NHL but all the North American sports
2:36. "Will any of the 9 turn out to be any significane in the NHL?". Carter Verhaege yes.
"yes mr. Lamangello"
That’s how I FELT NOW with the Sens dumping everyone but it’d part of a rebuild first time I ever experienced a rebuild part of it is Tearing it apart and being bad for years to be a contender
the way he is getting excited for tradedeadline is getting me excited too
Remember Jeremy Roenick? LOL Go Flyers!
I think dangle should be on the board of decision makers for the leafs as a rep for the fans! ...more knowledge then some past managers
Instead of getting Red Bull, you should have just gotten some of Lou's Kool Aid :D As for Ottawa, they get Phaneuf to help with Ceci and Chabot.
Lupul must be like. "I think I'm next. Yes!"
+LEAFS-FAN!!!!!!!!!! Pray Lupul is next
Cap space you say? I wonder if there's a certain Markham fella that might wanna squeeze in
+P Carnochan That is why this trade was made.
Nylander and Reilly are going to be superstars one day. Very promising
Just stumbled upon this now. Steve, you certainly don't need Red Bull.
Haha and Nylander did end up getting called up to the Leafs at the end of that season as did Kapanen. Since the Leafs sucked, they decided to give the kids a chance and the Marlies were stacked, large in part thanks to that trade, and won the Calder Cup two seasons later
Next move should be to trade Bozak but he has a no trade clause... Maybe buy him out. I don't know
+OneTimer No way, Bozak is a character guy, great faceoff taker, decent point producer. No way you buy him out, if the trade makes sense he isn't untouchable, move him, but don't actively try to move him.
+OneTimer Kadri should be gone imo
Grosso FTW well he's 30. Plus you he is a top 6 player. Unless if you put him on the 3rd line or Nylander plays on the wing.
Grosso FTW Not because he's 30. You are willing to pay him 5mill to play on the 3rd line. Buy him out because you can't trade him
Steve, take notes, I see a trade tree coming out of this.
dion recorded his first point as a leaf against ottawa
"Maybe you let Jared Cowen take up one of those roster spots."
If you're in the mood for tanking, absolutely. If you wanna win games, DON'T DO THAT.
"Mr. Lemoncello" LMAO
We are open for business. Bring on the draft. Rebuild. FINALLY!!!!!!
If he was watching in 2017 he would be sad
Leafs got way worse without Phaneuf, but getting rid of his contract and getting value from it in Lindberg and a 2nd round pick is amazing for the Leafs going forward.
Can not wait trading everybody for the future
As a huge Oshawa Generals fan, Im fired up Tobias Lindberg is reuniting with DJ Smith. DJ really got the best out of Lindberg last year. Can bet DJ was huge in them adding Lindberg to this trade
+We The North Lindberg is 20 years old, 6'3, and 215 lbs. Is he the real deal? cuz this kid is huge.
But I guarantee you he will be able to keep up with Nylander when not many other players could
We The North ahh okay got ya, thats even better
Donaghey was traded in the QMJHL as well this season.
I was worried about the sens being able to get rid of those guys, I didn't think anyone would take them, the fact they moved them all in one deal is magical.
+Syd Viscus Toronto won, actually.
shedboy4lyf hahaha we'll see about that there crystal ball...
As a Devils fan, very accurate to the Lou reference
Wow turns out we used Lindberg to acquire Calvin Picard . I smell a trade tree
Didn't mention Frankie Corrado. Thought you would say something about a new opportunity to play the rest of the season on a more regular basis!
I never thought of that. That's exciting
+youngblackhawk13 He looked pretty decent tonight against Calgary, at least offensively
Can't wait for your video in a month when you find out how bad Cowen is
+smashvillenashville
Cowen won't last very long in Toronto, because his unique contract makes him a perfect trade bait for teams with cap-issues.
+smashvillenashville Cowen's ability means nothing to this trade.... Its that they were stuck with Phaneufs long deal for 6 years and now everyone they're getting will be off their books after next year
+smashvillenashville lol I know…..the sens killed this trade
+smashvillenashville Cowen isn't in the Leafs' long-term plans. He's useful for a buyout. Phaneuf for Cowen is a huge upgrade for the Sens, while the Leafs get buyout candidates.
+smashvillenashville I don't know about that. Babcock managed to turn the Pilon into someone somewhat effective, so who knows what he could do for Cowen.
Like having Phaneuf on the team but sad to see Lindberg and Michalek go. Leaf fans - you're gonna LOVE Cowen.
+Jerome Samuel The thing is, the Leafs have money. We're willing to pay Nathan Horton millions of dollars not to play for our team. We can afford to bite the bullet with your crap players. Sens on the other hand have very little money and have to deal with Dion's contract for the next 5 years. Have fun :)
pretty good for both teams
The chug was epic...
Bro those gulps.
never going to happen but whats funny is, if the Sens bump the Pens out of the playoffs. That means the Leafs helped themselves lose the first round draft pick from the Kessel trade.
Great trade for both teams
Well now you can celebrate again as he's In LA...
Neon Dion the scrubba lubba dub dub
the only reason why I don't like the trade as much as I would is because Rupert autographed my jersey and hat recently
that's actually halarious Eric Karlsson is the 2nd highest paid defender on OTT 😅
"Yes Mr Lemon Jello"
Yes mr "lemoncello" lmao perfect
THE LOU-BABCOCK ERA IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last person left from this trade... Collin greening
Who needs meth?
Not Steve Dangle.
This trade opened up enough cap for the leafs to sign Stamkos
To be fair to Casey Bailey Steve not being top 10 on the Marlies in scoring is probably still top 30 in the entire AHL.
watching this while phaneuf is playing in the eastern conference finals
Yes Mr. lemonChello
BRO I just made a video exactly like this lol
Jared Cowan's contract is not something I'm happy we picked up.
Clearly, the Leafs need more than hockey talent to get into the playoff. Perhaps they need a complete trade of their suits and leave the players alone.
LOL This guy is the best
0:56 the first three are quite big names in Toronto already
