    Speakers vs 8 performance pads?
    Pads. Every time. That's a deal breaker to me. Speakers are OK: 60% gimmicky, 40% nice to have. But not at the expense of 4 pads.

    • @djcarlo

    I recently picked this up as a second controller to my Rane One......I will not lie, I love it. It being light, and no laptop made the last gig I did a breeze. The on deck speakers acted as a booth monitor to me, as I connected the XRL cable to main. It also updated to Engine OS 3.0, so they added a few new features. I feel individuals will sleep on this, but man it's gold.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  Год назад +4

      Honestly, with the Engine 3.0 update, and a little more use on this unit, it's really grown on me! Call it a sleeper hit, but I don't think I gave it credit where it was due back when it was released

    Bought this controller the day it came out. After 1yr of gigs, I must say Carlo is 100% on point with this review. This is the perfect intermediate controller. The built-in speakers are perfect for practicing and small events. You can get away with this controller at almost any type of gig, but it won't be ideal. Eventually the weak points show up. Major weak points are;
    limited I/O, only 4 pads, not great for scratching, short pitch fader, only a few fx, VERY hard to see in dark environments

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад +3

      Glad you've been enjoying it SiR, and really happy you chimed in with your experiences on it as well! The dark environments part is something I didn't get to test out.

    I have a MPC live 2. Many reviews out the gate felt the speakers being added were gimmicky until they used the device longer. Just like the original mpc live and the prime go having a small speaker to practice with or to play for a couple people in a small room is nice to have and much better than most laptop speakers. It being in all one package is convenient. The prime go and mix track pro were at the top of my list as a backup controller and this is a combo of both. If it had a battery like the prime go it would be a close to perfect backup hardware wise. Still waiting on engine DJ to catch up with the software.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад

      Nice point of view! I wonder if speakers on a controller will grow on people. thanks for sharing your input. I see your point :)

  • @jamesw2831
    @jamesw2831 2 года назад +21

    This was so close to nailing it. So freaking close. The MPC Live II added speakers and I'm like "if it is portable, most people will be using their pro headphones to monitor, or hook it up to speakers at home." I have the same opinion on this. Because the faders are short. Many people laud the Mixtrack Platinum FX for its long faders. And then the 4 performance pads was taken straight from the Denon Prime Go, which was a con there.
    But for that $600 price point, it is hard to complain and it is damn good. It has no competitor (unless you get a used Pioneer XDJ-RR, but even it has only 4 performance pads). If it gets compatibility with something like say...the Reloop Neon, I think that can solve the pad problem.

    • @djcarlo

      4 Performance pads have been around for years. I had them on my traktor s2 and even as far back as what could possibly be one of the first controllers, the m-audio torq xponent. They’ve been around for years, wouldn’t call that a con.

    I bought this unit about a week ago and I love it already. I do wish they had a sampler section like when I use my Serato but the fact that all I need is my hard drive to do a kick back in the barbershop had me sold. I own a NS7II, SB3, had a Prime 4 and even got the Party Mix with the built in speakers. All I know is if InMusic comes out with a standalone Serato Controller, the game will definitely be over for most of us.................

    What I love about any type of tech (DJ controllers, cameras, phone, coffee pots) is there is something out there for everyone. Think the speakers are cheap? The next guy/lady is already banging out beats on this Mixstream Pro while “you” continue to bang out on your keyboard. I appreciate your reviews even if it’s not for me. In my opinion is a really good move from Numark. So often a quick DJ mix for me can be quite anti social as I end up mixing in headphones. When mixing over speakers, everyone engages and often my kids then want to have a go so it becomes a more inclusive hobby. Throw in a power bank that can regulate 12v and this becomes a very portable device.
    I think the speakers are right for this model. I don’t imagine they will make it onto pro gear but that is not who this is aimed at.

    Hey Carlo, nice review as usual. About the integrated speakers, in one hand they take precious space that could be used for other functions (4 extra pads for example), on the other hand they can solve a simple little problem that some bar/lounge djs have, because, most of this kind of spaces usually have minimal gear for the djs (sometimes if any at all), so I can already see a good use for them. IMHO what I don't like about (and I own a mixtrack pro 3 for about 4 years) is the look and feel of the plastics, specially at this price point because for me that's just a Mixtrack pro with a built in touchscreen, so I was hoping a more premium look. Cheers

    The speakers make this controller feel like the kind of thing you would give to your 14 year old nephew for him to learn but has absolutely zero space in his room or something, definitely a very good thing for beginners and those who want an entire setup without investing in accessories. If the speakers can act like booth monitors then I would say it has a better lifespan but for anyone looking to move from controllers to standalone, the speakers are basically useless

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад

      I feel like that's the market Numark is looking at here! It's a good jumping point for beginner DJs and those looking at getting into the DJ game before they can commit to other sorts of equipment.

    I think the reason you gave for the speakers not being a good idea is the reason why they're a good idea. 😆

  • @dj-peterofficial2753
    @dj-peterofficial2753 2 года назад +4

    I'm an all Pioneer pro DJ since the first appearance of Pioneer DJ gear in the mid 90's. I've followed Denons progress the last years with interest and even had the Prime 4 for a short while, but ditched it fast because of the shortcomings it had in my opinion, compared to how my work flow is. It was also far too big and clunky to bring along without a hassle. I replaced it with a XDJ-700/DJM-450 combo in a lightweight hardcase and have been very satisfied with that solution.
    Now, this little gem has caught my interest for real. There's a number of gigs I do where I really wish I had a small portable all-in-one unit, where I could step out of my normal workflow a bit without compromising myself doing so. I normally use CDJ mode, mechanical jog wheels and memory cues, but for the gigs I have in mind, I could adapt. I did start out playing vinyl for 10 years so I'm not completely locked in to the workflow I have on my Pioneer setups :) , but doing club/party gigs with a very high intensity and quick mixing, I am quite trapped in my habits to make things work.
    But, doing lounge gigs and atmospheric gigs where I can focus on long transitions and playing in key for hours, often trapped in a small space, and playing on a modest volume level, this unit could be perfect. In those environments I don't need blasting monitors, but rather something low key not to disturb the guests, but enough not to mix in my head phones the whole session. I actually think this little unit could attract a lot of pro DJ's all over the world. It's not like the price will scare us off from buying it :) . The price of the whole unit is actually $150 less than my DJM-450 only. Good work Numark!

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад +2

      I love your insight into it! Actually, the concept of using this for small lounges is something I didn't consider. It would be quite a bit of hardware to have for gigs were the music doesn't have to be pumping, no? I'm not sure about it getting the pro DJs on its side though! Haha

    • @dj-peterofficial2753
      @dj-peterofficial2753 2 года назад

      @@djcarlo Maybe not full time pro DJ's, but at least semi pro's. Not everyone manage to play lounge sets for hours and usually that music is something that comes with age, just like broken backs from all the vinyl we used to carry, and bad knees from too much workout on hard surfaces. I have the NXS2 setup alongside my smaller setup, and it's pretty much been parked in my studio since I got my little XDJ-700/DJM-450 setup. Of course there's setups ready to use in most clubs I play in, but lately the request to bring our own gear has increased quite a lot, or they can't buy new gear to replace the broken because of the supply shortages. While most Pioneer and Denon gear is out of stock, this little Numark showed up on the shelves here in Sweden the same week it was announced.
      With all the private and corporate events that has been on hold for a year and a half, I think there's a lot of DJ's looking to get their hands on those events now when they are starting up again. Even hard core club DJ's I think, if not only for the money, which is roughly 4 times higher on events than in clubs. You don't wanna risk bringing your own pro gear setup worth 1000's of $ when you can get away just as good with a gem like this Numark all-in-one. I ask for half a normal rental fee to bring my NXS2 setup, but so far it's not happened even once. The only time my pro gear gets out of the studio is when I have my own events, and so far no one have had any complaints about the job I do on my smaller setups, which is why I really think this Numark is gonna attract a lot of DJ's. As restrictions just has lifted here in Sweden I'm only doing 2-3 gigs a week, but when things are normalized and I'm at full spin, I'm gonna get one of those. What is there to lose? A couple of gigs and it's paid. In my case, if I don't like it, I can always use it on DJ work shops for beginner DJ's, or pass it on to someone deserving it.

    Common Questions:
    1. Does this work with Serato DJ or Rekordbox DJ?
    No.
    2. Is this Battery Powered like the Denon DJ Prime Go?
    No.
    3. Mixstream Pro or the Denon DJ Prime Go?
    If you're cheap and you like speakers go for the Mixstream. If you value portability and battery power and are okay with small jogwheels, etc, go for the Prime Go
    4. Mixstream Pro or the FLX-6 or DDJ-800
    If you value standalone stuff and portability, then go for the Mixstream Pro. If you want to be in the Rekordbox DJ family go for the DDJ-800. The FLX-6 is not worth its price at 600 USD
    5. Should I upgrade to the Mixstream Pro?
    Yes if you want the cheapest standalone controller yet. No if you hate those speakers.
    6. STFU. What should I buy if I have $0-$10,000 money?

If they had just replaced the speakers (which are imho redundant and have very little benefit when you take into account the space occupied on the controller) with longer pitch faders and extra pad effects it would have positioned itself as so much better than flx and contending with the ddj800. It’s a real slap in the face to be so close to a perfect entry-mid level control only just to incorporate such a ridiculously useless feature.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад +2

      @@djcarlo Yeah that's true, I feel like as a beginner with a bit of a budget, or someone who's keen to start mixing in a casual social setting, this is definitely a viable option. It's just that for djs at an intermediate level, there are many people looking for an upgrade from their beginner controller without necessarily wanting to fork out 800-1000$ . If Numark can create a new controller at a similar price point with a layout as professional (long pitch faders, more pads, more fx) as the outputs, they would kill the intermediate market without a doubt.

      The S4 needs a laptop (and Traktor for that matter) to function if you're gonna use it for a DJ set. Check out my Best DJ Gear video for ideas on what you can upgrade to!

    For an on the go Dj who travels I think it’s perfect and compact although my main baby is the ddj 1000srt I don’t want to travel on the plane to another country with it all the time , It can use some more features but for now wifi Bluetooth and 7 inch touch screen for under $600 is absolutely great !

      Just audio bud. The lack of an HDMI output pretty much says it all. It's really meant for audio

    I actually bought this, before I had the piOneer CDJ200 which was great for a start I’d highly recommend it but the same mixes I did with the CDJ I did with the Numark a lot smoother with the LCD infront of me abs not the app on my phone. Well worth the money

      Glad you liked your experience with it Rich! It's not a bad controller actually; just didn't really need the speakers, but overall, it's a fairly good standalone!

    Have some of those negatives mentioned that could be updated via firmware been fixed?

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  21 день назад +1

      If they're not hardware related (4 pads! Why?!), then possibly yes! I recall Engine DJ now has Touch FX, which functions similarly to Dry/Wet knobs, plus it continually updates too :)

    I have read reviews on portability being the future- less equipment is more. I’d like to ask your advice -Can I use this for small coffeeshop gigs? ( of course w a proper PA system)

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад +1

      I'd say so bud! It's fairly portable, can store all your music, and can control lights (if you decide to go for those!). Plus, it might be fun to play around with every so often when the atmosphere calls for it.

    7:32 I kinda agree with you. Ive been on Team NUMARK for a while starting with their IDJ3, to Mixdeck mixing CDs until I got my XDJ-RR I love it, but there is still room for improvement. But since its targeted towards the beginner I can see the basic layout so its not too overwhelming.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад

      Yup! I feel like Numark did their market research well in targeting their audience with this one. It's a pretty straightforward controller, with a few extra bells and whistles!

    I’m looking at starting to dj and I don’t currently have a computer. I’m debating if I get this controller by itself or if I should get a laptop and the Numark platinum fx. This by itself costs as much as the computer 🧐

      It really depends on what you're looking at for your needs, though if you don't have a computer, you may want to consider that first because, otherwise, how will you get your songs? Haha

    The question you ask about the Mixstream Pro being innovated: I would say Numark is off to a good start. As far as a standalone DJ unit, they hit the mark. Touch screen display, 2 USB and SD ports, both XRL and RCA connectors. in addition, Wifi capability for music streaming and with Engine DJ software. I can see intermediate DJs who are looking for a backup controller for travel would take a serious look at the Mixstream Pro. I personally like the fact that I can copy my Rekordbox library and add it towards the Engine DJ and it will auto analyze and add my set cue points without me starting from scratch. I can even save them for my Dropbox account as another backup for them. No other controller with the same price point is doing it. Speaking of price, I noticed they increase it by $100 USD. Now it is $699 USD. That is still less than my DDJ800 which I pay $777 USD from Amazon. Even though I am not digging the position of the speakers and less FX and only 4 pads, it is not a total deal-breaker for I don't use the pads on my controller and I use 4 of its effects. I am a House, Disco, and Techno DJ and when it comes to effects and tricks, less is more. Since I would like to understand more about Engine DJ software and need a backup controller, I may consider buying the Mixstream Pro. You have to start somewhere and I can't see spending more on a standalone right now.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад +1

      Great take on it Antoine! Since you do go for more 4 on the floor stuff, I'd say the Mixstream Pro actually could be up your alley! I still agree though that the speakers are a bit awkward, and I'm the kind of guy who needs more than 4 pads haha. It does have it's market though!

    • @djcarlo

    The price point is excellent and although I agree it is not a Pro level device. It does have its perks for a beginner DJ. I just bought one for my son to practice on as he is too young to trust with speakers or a laptop. This setup is excellent for the bedroom DJ or small for smaller venues IMO. This would had been awesome when I started at 12 years old. At that time I learned on Technics 1200's, but always seem to be damaging the needles and blowing out my cheap speakers.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад

      Dang, needles are seriously expensive nowadays, so at least you were able to learn on them when they were still somewhat readily available! Great on you too that you got one for your son! I really hope he enjoys learning how to DJ on it.

  • @JohnWilson-qf5tk
    @JohnWilson-qf5tk 2 года назад

    This is great for someone who wants to play music straight out of the box. Speakers in controller is a no for me but for a beginner on a budget it will be great as even quite cheap monitors can bump up the price of a setup.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 года назад

      True! It's a great piece of hardware for those who are just getting into the DJ game. Good monitors are also pretty pricey!
