Maaaaaannnnn!!! I’m flipping between, rev-1, DDJ-1000SRT ( which I’m looking at really close hehehe ) but the Prime 4 is a big contender…I still love my Mixstream Pro but I’m looking to move to a 4 channel controller.

As a hobby DJ doing a few house parties a year these are things I suggest:
1. If you've never DJed before, start with buying just a dj controller (like DDJ-400). If you already own any type of speakers, use those and find good quality sources to rip. This is to check if you truely like DJing or if it's just one of those sort term things you'll waste way too much money on.
2. If you like it, buy better speakers (preferably studio monitors). You can either upgrade your song quality by getting a subscription to a DJ pool, or you buy audio enhancing/analyzing software like Platinum Notes 4 and Mixed in Key (this is what I did). Remember to use good quality rip sources otherwise take a subscription.
3. If you enjoy DJing even more now and you want to try small parties/venues, decide whether you want to use the same speakers or upgrade to PA speakers (monitors are better for close range small groups and PA to really go LOUD!). I upgraded to a big PA and subwoofer combo for parties. I also bought a bluetooth adapter in case I don't want to DJ.
Even if you're a bit of an audiophile like me, you'll never hear the difference between quality rips and the official sources unless you use insanely expensive speakers. A one-time purchase of audio enhancing software in combination with being able to rip anything on the internet was worth way more to me than getting a DJ pool subscription that does not include everything I search for.
This is just from my own experience but consider the choices. Best of luck😁

The DDJ 400 is officially discontinued by pioneer. The FLX4 replaced it, not just effectively, but officially.

I’m on the FLX6 in my home setup honestly a really good all round controller definitely helped me when transitioning to cdjs and rx’s in clubs and festivals.
It does have a great layout. Plus the new GT adds even more to it

I'd add a Traktor Kontrol S4 mk3 to the under 1000$ range. It's affordable, has decent build and sound quality, and has 4 channels. Also balanced XLR outputs and phono/line inputs. It also comes with the Pro license, so no need to pay extra for the software.
That's true Alex! I just wish NI made more updates since it was released. The S4 mk3 is a few years old already 😅
@@djcarlo The soundcard and analog amplifier of the S4 mk3 still hasn't been matched by a Pioneer controller (maybe the Rane Four exceeds it) as well as the moving jog wheels puts the S4 mk III ahead of most Serato controllers. If you are going to list the DDJ 1000 you should list the S4 mk iii because the S4 came out after the DDJ 1000 but before the SRT

I was able to pick up a Kontrol S3 for the equivalent of 325USD as an upgrade from my SB3. Traktor lacks in some areas but is way more powerful in others and if you're going used there is insane value to be had
Still rocking and loving my ddj 800 only would consider swapping to a ddj 1000 srt if i needed 4 eqs but i usually just have 2 tracks mixing. The compact size is pretty nice too if you're moving your decks around for work.
Overall one of my favorite RB controllers!

Yup! It comes with Lite, but its compatible with Pro too, which is the complete version of Lite 😄
I have been with the Hercules Inpulse 500 for two months and I can never regret my decision buying it after watching your tutorial and it's review.

I was lucky enough for one of my mates to sell me his ddj1000 for $500 because he bought cdj3000's. The 1000 is the perfect controller IMO, it has everything you need and it's very similar to club standard CDJ's so it's easy to swap around. I bring mine to gigs and when I play at clubs it's an easy transition to hop onto a CDJ straight away. It hasn't got cheat effects like scratching fx and merge fx so it is a good representation of your actual skill as a DJ.

Hey dude quick question. I’m just a beginner, I’m wondering what program you would use for simple dj’ing such as going to a bar and just playing songs and having a nice transition in between. What program would you use to do the djing, as well as where would you get the music from. Spotify? Apple Music? How does that work. Thanks
For programs, I'd honestly recommend either Serato, Rekordbox, or Djay Pro. And get your music from Record Pools, like BPM Supreme, Crate Connect, or Zip DJ

It's pretty much my golden standard for laptop-based controllers, especially if you're used to Pioneer gear! The Prime 4 is a very good competitor though!

My favourite is Pioneer Flx4 due to its affordable price! I particularly liked the new smart fader feature, even though I may not use it frequently, and the filter section. Also, the satin plastic material gives it a nice touch.. For only 300 euro is really nice.

@@UptightGG not really, you have to preload songs on the software but if you load them from an external device is not possible to search for songs on Rekordbox. There are hundreds on posts on forums about this problem.

Yeah the Hercules Inpulse 500 is what I currently use. For the price, I definitely love it but I would prefer to have a Mixon 8 Pro. With the Hercules, when I am playing outside I can't really see if any of the buttons or anything illuminated on the controller is actually illuminated.
It's difficult to see outside for real! Haha, I have that issue with some other controllers too

I’ve got a pioneer sr2 and I love it. Debating on upgrading to the srt 1000 but I’ll probably still keep my sr2 for portability
That's a good backup to have! The 1000 is near perfect, but it's also BIG
I love my Inpulse 500. The RGB pads are an extra bonus and the aux feature is great. I use it for my smaller gigs and it fits in a carry on luggage.
Tbh, it's one of the best! If the FX section was fixed, then it'd be perfect

Stick with the RX2. Next upgrade should be a CDJ set!
So, there is some things that you forgot to mention about the RX3. Software that can be used are, Serato, Recordbox, Trackor w/template download and any DAW, yes the whole unit is midi mappable. For all those that do not use dJ Software, you can use USB Flash Drives. The unit can even record your mix to the second USB Flash Drive.
So $2100 is not a bad price.
PSA!!! The price of the RX3 will be going up to $2500 on January 9, 2023, at least that is what Sweetwater says.
It's a pretty complete package! But dang, that's another Pioneer device with an increase in price!

Hello people, a question for everyone, I am between ddj flx 4 and the Hercules impulse 500, aesthetically and visually I prefer the impulse 500 but when it comes to talking about the software, rekordbox convinces me more than Serato, what do you recommend me to do?
If you like Rekordbox more, go for the FLX4!

Hi DJ Carlo- I am looking for a very small portable controller and interested in the Hercules DJ Control Mix 2 but noticed the Numark DJ2Go2 Touch and that seems more interesting as it has more audio outs and I am afraid of bluetooth latency issues with the Hercules Control Mix. Is there a reason you don't recommend the Numark DJ2Go2 Touch? Thanks for your amazing videos!

It doesn't have useless options such as speakers, monitors etc, and its basic parts(EQ, 8 Hot cues, volume faders etc) aren't excluded and shabby.
Sometimes all you need are the basics! If you aren't into scratching, I'm sure you'll enjoy this unit!
My first controller was a Control Inpulse 200 by Hercules. I was looking into getting the 500 but I have been having lot of issues with DJUCED on my laptop, and Hercules Support didn't helped me. I decided to go on for a Pioneer DDJ-FLX6, do you think is this a good transition between controllers?

Love your videos! Definitely making my start in DJing fun and having some guidance. This video helped me decide on purchasing the DDJ 1000SRT. Seems like the industry standard and is good for being a mobile DJ for smaller gigs as well as professional level, correct me if I’m wrong 😅. I do have a question for the record pool you mentioned. Does the site have just the normal versions of songs? I have subscribed to other pools but it’s mostly remixes and never really the original song. I would like to have access to various versions of songs including those remixes but the normal versions as well as I’m sure sometime people just wanna hear the song they love and how it was made. The Funnest set up I ever had and still have to this day is my two Technic 1200mk2's sandwiching a 07 Vestax Samurai (very basic). Sometimes I'll switch out the Vestax with a Pioneer S3. But in this day and age I would have to say my go to is my Denon SC6000M's with a Pioneer S9. I rarely us my Nexus 2000's and the overly priced Nexus 2000 mixer that goes with it.
Oh maaaan, the SCs with an S9 is a dream to work with!
just got a denon mcx8000 , heard they had problems in stand alone so read the manual , followed instructions and updated all software/firmware ... no problems and i luv it . honestly , the rest of my equiptment is gathering dust ...dont know if thats a good thing

1:00 I bought the Hercules DJ controller a few years back and it was defective out of the box the jog wheel was sticking so I returned it and got the DDJ-400 and have had no issues with the 400 over 2 years later I am now looking for an all in one system $600-$100

Glad I ordered a ddj flx4 when I did. Suddenly people are selling them on amazon marked up $200. I bought the DDJ1000 for $1200 when it first camp out and that thing is going for hundreds more than I bought it. Crazy times

Super happy with my Denon Sc 4 Live. The speakers I thought would be a gimmick but they work pretty good as booths or not worry to connect to monitor speakers to practice. The effects and layout is so much better than the Prime 4. The only thing I would change is the 7 inch screen to a 10 inch.
The speakers surprised me too! Not the best, but pretty darn good for something mounted into a controller!

Does it have a SSD drive bay?
@@michaeltraynor398 No because you can slot in an sd card of any size. I have one of 500GB, for 80 euro but you can have a 1TB one if you want. It makes it also much easier to load new songs than an SSD drive.
Can you load music directly from usb stick without comp. hassle?
When I daydream about upgrading, it's the Rane Four, Roland DJ707m, Pioneer DDJ-SX3, or maybe that Mixon 8. However the reality is that I'm actually just fine with my Mixtrack Pro FX and even Serato Lite. The limiting factors for me right now are my skill/experience, and my music library - need to get more tracks prepped and cue pointed etc.
Though I would say I really wish there was a low-mid range 4ch controller with aux ins on ch3+4. I have to play songs off a phone/tablet occasionally and it's annoying that I can't run those songs through my controller. Seems like you have to go for super high-end gear to get that feature, even if you don't need the other high-end features.
The extra decks do cost you there Tom! The only one I could suggest is the Numark NS4FX. Not badly priced, though I've yet to try it with the aux ins

I returned my DDJ-400 and got the Numark MixTrack Platinum FX 2-3 years ago. Seems like I made a mistake if only the Pioneer's have the shortage, lol. Nonetheless it has been great for me. Love the weighted wheels!
To each their own DKizzy! Honestly, the weighted wheels were my deal breaker because they get in the way of scratching, but my other friends who have that and the NS4FX all love 'em! So not a mistake on your end haha

That's pretty good bud! One of the better Pioneer controllers out there, especially if you're looking at the second hand market

Flx6 could have been great but would like something with XLR out & serato support seems a bit off with it from various reviews. Might still be an OK choice to step up from the SB though 🤔

I know this controller is very old but the DDJ SZ is still worth it till today 4 channels and sure the cheesy horn sound but it runs on serato and also secretly on rekordbox for some reason it’s so overlooked and if was 22 10 years ago I’d just buy that and keep it and stick with serato since I’m doing basic events and club gigs where I don’t have to do crazy tricks or need for the newer effects
The SZ was the flagship back when it was released, and indeed was pretty amazing for what it offered!

I’m currently using the Ddj 400 and I’m considering upgrading too the Ddj 1000 or the RX3 , I have no intention of ever playing in club just private parties,etc… Money is not the issue I’m concerned with reliability. What’s your take on one over the other as far as reliability. Thank you for you videos they’re very helpful.

The RX3 is superior for me, but there's a lot of other factors to consider. The XZ itself is great too if it's what your budget dictates 😄
I had the hercules dj inpulse 500. I returned it and got the pioneer ddj rev1. The rev1 is hands down the better controller. The jogs are more accurate for beat matching. The effect section is also better. I did like the headphone eq and a few other things the hercules had. Without really good jogs what good is it. Seems like hercules invested more in features then the basics.

It's strange the rx3 is actually cheaper in the UK and under 2k.
Also within the under grand I really thought the pioneer DJ 800 would have got a mention I guess because it's rekordbox only it missed the list.
I have the 800 and the 1000 both great controllers IMO.
I would say the xz is closer to the 2 grand price also plus it's serato and rekordbox..
I wonder if both are due to be replaced by pioneer soon
Dang, none of the sites I checked out went below 2k for the RX3, either in USD or GBP.
The 800 was actually on my draft for the list, but yeah, since nothing new has happened with it, I dropped it for time. Given as well that lots of new RB-compatible controllers came out this year.
@Dj Carlo the herc. impulse 500 actually SAYS it comes with Serato lite, but when you buy it - Ive had two now (one replacement ) they BOTH came with serato DJ PRO full license in the box. Or is that maybe just the limited white edition like I have? no sure, but the box said serato lite on it even for the white one and I have now 2 extra serato pro licenses .

Good reviews! It must be said: I played on the Denon Prime 4 - it reads Rekordbox libraries from USB thumb drive flawlessly! Very impressed. Just not a fan of that "Microsoft Windows 98" neon green.. Roland uses it as well. Blech! lol The Pioneer XDJ-RX3 should have a 4-channel mixer at that price.
The Prime 4 is honestly amazing for what it can offer! But yeah, the color is just....oof for me haha

Got the numark platinum FX for 250 bucks. It's the 2channel parent of the NS4fx. Looks like the most ergonomic and best built entry level controller.
Pretty solid controller! Only gripe is that if you're a scratcher, the jog wheels are heavy

I messed up my dj 400 replacing a channel fader so I went for a xdj rx3. For the price, pioneer should've really made it 4 channel, but I'm okay with 2 + aux in.

@@ChupoyTV outdated doesn't mean old. They S4 MK3 came out in 2018, true, but it much ahed of its competitors. And do not forget that was N.I. to invent STEMS, eons ago, that now are all running to implement!!!
@@ChupoyTV btw the violet and the white are awesome but I do think that they are not available anymore. I was lucky enough to get one of the last 3 Machine MK3 in vapor grey. AWESOME!

the new Numark Mixtrack platinum gives you the most bang for your buck. Screens on the jogwheels, Paddle FX and it's a 4 track
It was on the first draft for this list, but the NS4FX just felt better for me. Plus, it has XLR outputs

Mostly the age. I'm always about keeping up to date and getting the most out of the latest in tech haha
if you are on a smaller budget. I would Recommend the Pioneer SB-2 or SB-3. I got an sb2 for £120 used.

Although the FLX4 is the new version of the DDJ 400, is it still fine for a beginner to buy a DDJ 400 or would it be better to wait for the FLX4 ?
I'd say wait for the FLX4. More features, and far more compatible with other software

Controllers are great, but if you have the chance, Denon SC6000m's, X1850 and 2 LC6000's are the perfect set-up! 😜

Great video...awesome breakdown of every gear at their price range. Now there are beginner DJs who have bought gears you mentioned here...I suggest, What about making a video on how DJs take care of their controllers at home....like do you just leave it out in the open? or put it in a case or put a cover when you're not using it? or what to do when knobs and fader feel loose?
Oh. That's a great suggestion! I keep mine in boxes, but I've got a list of other ways to take care of them!
Carlo, ive never seen you talk about roland boards in any of your videos. Have you ever tried the roland dj 707m or the 808?
They've proven to be somewhat difficult to get in The Philippines, so I just never got around to trying them out!

the controller i currently use is the numark dj2go2 its probably one of the cheapest dj controllers at $89 its pretty small but it treats me well

Simply put, it didn't make the cut for this year! As much as I wanted it in there, the 1000 proved to be better with features. Had to cut it for time to include newer, more updated controllers

I‘m thinking about upgrading to a ddj1000 from a ddj400 but since the 1000 is that old, should I wait for a possible followup or just go for it because there is as far as I‘m aware no no new version af the 1000

(actually $70 b/c found out one of the tempo faders was broken so i had to fix it, so knocked the price down after)

flx4 is on massive backorder, so don't want to deal with that, flx6 is pretty much where i'd want to be price wise, but im partial to the ddj-800 for the extra features and also better I/O
