Great video. I purchased a Ikon XD 42 about a month ago and love how it mows. I also put on the mulching kit and the grass is cut up into very tiny pieces. Great mower. I will never go back to a lawn tractor. I noticed on mine that the mow time indicator is always on and wasn't sure if this is normal. It only tracks time when mowing. Also, my battery was dead on Saturday when I went out to mow. I have a charger and charged it up and it mowed fine but as soon as I turned the mower off the battery was still dead. I plan to call in this week for service but I may check the voltage regulatory myself when I get home and also see if the stator is working. Not sure what the problem could be off the top of my head but weird that such a new mower would have a dead battery so soon.
Thanks for sharing with us, Kevin - and thank you for the recent purchase of your Ariens IKON XD! That is most definitely abnormal for your battery to become discharged after your first mowing. It's difficult to speculate what might be happening there, but you're doing the right thing by calling your nearest Ariens dealer for help diagnosing and resolving the issue. If they discover there's a manufacturing defect with your product, we'll stand behind our warranty promise 100%
Anyone have any idea why I heard beeping on my ikon 52” mower after starting it for the first time and bringing the RPMs up? Can’t find anything in the manual regarding this.
Hey, 2 years old and my drive belt snapped...found a video that shows Ikon XD drive pulleys are not lined up evenly...use spacers on back right pulley to bring to same level...then reinstall drive belt
If it requires the choke to start - even when warm - no issue - pull the choke up...if it requires choke to stay running then you have an issue that requires service. Either you are running too lean because of an adjustment, air is getting in to the intake around a loose carburetor or you may have dirt in your carb causing it to not be getting enough fuel...
One of the benefits from buying from a dealer - I asked for an extra key and received one... usually the price is the same or a dealer will match a big box store price if they are a little higher...there are definite benefits from a specialized dealer...right from assembly through to service down the road...As someone in the lawn care industry - can't recommend going to a dealer for your lawn care equipment.
Thanks, I will never buy an Ariens zero turn after watching this! Way to much to go through just to start it up! It reminds me of my first lawnmower purchased a brand new Lawnboy! 😂
Pulling a manual choke on for a cold start and mid throttle is too much process for you? Perhaps you should stick to hiring a lawn service....personally, I prefer a manual choke vs an auto choke...I have this mower and it is reliable and SIMPLE to start
I use an XD52 that my friend owns to cut her grass. I learnt how to use it by guesswork and luck because she lost the manual. Took ages to work out about the handbrake safety cutout. I'd rather learn how to use it properly but there are no decent videos showing how to use it the right way. What is the big foot pedal for? Why when I press the yellow button to start the cutters does it often stall? How do I adjust the cut height - the knob doesn't turn easily and I don't want to force it? It's a lovely machine but can anyone help?
Hello Peter, Thank you for contacting the Ariens Company. If you can please private message us the model and serial number of the unit as well as an email address, we can provide manuals for this unit. Thanks
@@AriensChannel Thanks but I can't see any message option? There is a number on a sticker on the engine - FR691VJ55111 - is that any use? If not where do I find the other numbers?
Hello Peter, This is located behind the rear tires on the frame of the unit or they are located under the seat straight down behind the battery on the frame of the unit. If you are not in a well-lit area, you may need a flashlight to shine behind the battery. Thanks.
What happens if I use this on a commercial style lawn with a ton of land? What I mean is can it handle it and is it made for it in a since that its not going to over head or anything..also my dad works at a college and they just git a new scag they said after 20 hours change the oil cause frok the factory it says it has break in oil in it...do you guys use any of that type of stuff...?
Thanks for asking! The Ikon XD series was designed for residential use only, and probably isn't the best choice for super-large acreage. That's when we'd point you a step up to the Apex series: And yes, depending on the engine manufacturer, we recommend a break-in engine oil change. This should usually occur around the first 10 hours, but refer to the engine manual for your unit for details because each manufacturer, (Kohler, Kawasaki, etc.) has varying specifications.
Dumb question and I see you don't have a video explaining and I can find it in manual, But when engaging pro should you always be at full throttle, or should you engage it at half then increase throttle? The idea is does it save on belt wear not to engage at full throttle or not? Thanks.
Sorry I didn't see this sooner... hopefully you resolved your issue - for others - check that the hydro engagement levers are not pulled into the out position where the mower is effectively in 'neutral' for pushing...also check your handbrake isn't on...cheers
I recently purchased a new IKON XD with the kawasaki fr691v (I've yet to mow with it). I'm having some trouble with re-starting. On a cold start, it starts just fine. But if I start it, shut it off after a few seconds, then try to restart - it normally wont start. I have to let it sit for a bit. Is there a re-starting procedure to help with this?
Thanks for asking, James. Are you using the choke when re-starting? Warm engines shouldn't need to be choked when starting, but sometimes it helps to "feather" the choke knob, meaning slowly moving it up and down, while starting.
@@AriensChannel The engine isn't really "warm" yet as it had only run for a few seconds. But either way it wouldn't start in the choke on or off position - I tried both. But after watching this video where you slid the choke in while starting, i tried that and it does seem to work. Thank you for the help.
@@2010stoof I've noticed that. Interestingly the manual says to move the throttle to the slow position when starting. I've found that not to be the best position, seems you have as well. This video also suggest otherwise.
When starting cold, mine won't even try and start at idle. Spins for a sec then stops turning engine Any idea if I should do a break in oil change? Manual says nothing about it I have the 42 with the kawi fr600
Don't you want to warm the engine a bit before throttling up like that? I thought you were supposed to let it idle for a min or two too before shut off. Is this accurate?
Information on engine start up and shut down is not correct. Read your specific engine manual for accurate information. This will give you the warm up and shut down times for your engine. For example, my Kawasaki has 3-5 minute, 1/2 throttle, on start up of a cold engine. It also indicates to reduce throttle to the very lowest setting for 1 minute before shutting down the engine. Just thought ya'll should know.
This is good practice...I do this same procedure with my Kohler powered Ikon XD also...I also engage the PTO at 1/2 throttle with the blades all the way up/on pavement so as not to be as hard on pulleys/belts/spindles...welcome different opinions on this...cheers
Thanks for letting us know about that, Richard. It's common for the choke knob to not stay in its 100% "out" position, but as long as your engine is able to start without issue, there's no reason for concern. However, if it's falling down so much that your engine has difficulty starting, please contact your nearest Ariens servicing dealer. From the first time I tried to start my IKON XD 42 inch, It WON'T start. It will ONLY start if I use starting fluid. I bought it new. Very disappointed.

DONT BUY AN ARIENS THEY ARE JUNK buy a used toro or exmark for less and have less problems. new doesnt always mean better. the deign and junk self contained hydro-gear transaxle you cant get to... to refiill because they start leaking after 30 hours... causes you to have to take whole mower apart to add oil.. other then that ive had to replace springs, many upon many belts... frame has cracked and this UNIT barely Used - little over 300 hours... Yes stays on all the time. The period blinks when counting time if I recall.

Maybe have problem with alternator if it's dying.
