- Fast, Affordable and Good? - TTArtisan 35mm f1.4 For Micro Four Thirds
I've been a fan of TTArtisan lenses for a while now and since making the switch to Micro Four Thirds I've wanted to try out this 35mm f1.4 and spoiler alert, it didn't disappoint.

Tis a good lens that! I very shallowly like the vintage design of it too.
It seems like a perfect companion for a tiny camera🖖😁
Not every day you get a 3-legged creature caught on camera like at only 23 seconds in, and you don't even brag about it. Wow. Kudos!
Haha, that’s just one of the local riff raff. He was in a recent instagram post too but with only two legs visible 😂
These photos are stunning! Great video and in-depth thoughts :)
Amazing shots!
Nice work, David. I picked up a used copy of their 25mm f2 for e-mount a few weeks ago. Lots of fun for not much money.
I’m interested in something like that 25mm or maybe the 23 mm f1.4. They’re great for the money 🖖
Great Video Mate & fantastic shots - They sent me the 17mm version, but I just can’t get into the manual focus thing… Just does not suit me personally and my style of shooting… Maybe I’m just to impatient these days lol … But you got some really good shots, so maybe I’ll give it another chance :) Great video
Yeah the manual lens thing isn’t for everyone, but I’m a sucker for a wonky old vintage lens so it’s something I’ve got used to.
I used the 17mm on apsc, but I like to shoot a bit longer so I’d like to give the 23mm f1.4 a blast on m4/3.
Thanks for watching, mate🖖
Nice one Dave, another good day 👍
Yeah that light was playing silly buggers a bit, but I got a few half decent shots🖖
That's a nice equivalent focal length on Micro 4/3 - I've gone back to shooting film lately, and suddenly 50mm seems so incredibly wide!!! Having that wide aperture of f1.4 is nice too, that's a lot more light than all my vintage 35s.
I enjoyed this lens on apsc and it’s really good on mft too. I’d like to try the 23mm f1.4 on mft at some point. I do prefer the longer focal lengths for street though and that 35 is great to use🖖
I have this lens - it’s really good. At f1.4 the soft edges and bokeh look great for portraits when you nail the focus - not easy at f1.4 as focus peaking rarely works. I mainly photograph family, flowers, plants and gardens - lovely results for all these with a pretty good keeper rate (over 50%). It’s got a pretty good close focus too… 22cm I think?
Yeah it’s not perfect but wide open it does have a vintage lens look that I really like.
Thanks for watching 🖖
same here 70 ish or more is best for me i like distance no need to bi in the centre on the face of someone something sniper style
Exactly, I’m not a fan of getting up in peoples personal space, I’ll leave that to the Bruce Gilden fans 🖖😁
Another excellent video. I’ve been meaning to ask - what’s the name of that first piece of music? It’s like your theme tune! :)
Thanks very much. I think the music is by Dylan Sitts, but I couldn’t tell you the title off hand since I use quite a few of his tracks from epidemic sound. I’ll update the description when I’m done with dinner and put the info in there. Thanks for watching 🖖
I just updated the description to include the song titles 🖖
Awesome review brother i have been eyeing thos lens for my canon m50 Christmas i gonna score one ..but one question do i need to use focus peeking to nail my focus..have an awesome Friday in the uk
Regarding peaking I’d say it’s not needed, but I’ve had 15 years of practice using manual lenses on dslrs, so until a few years ago I’d never used a camera with peaking. With that said, peaking makes using manual lenses so much faster and more accurate.
If you have the ability to zoom focus on the m50, that’ll be a big help if you have no peaking🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial tanks for the awesome advice David do have a great day can't wait to get mines
No problem mate, have a great weekend 🖖
I have the meike 25mm f1.8 which is also a great manual lens for less than £100
I’m yet to try Meike lenses but I’ve heard good things about them. Thanks for watching 🖖
how is this lens for video applicatition?
It’s great as a b-roll lens and that’s what I use it for most when it comes to video, I tend to use a 25mm for my talking head shots.
It has a 37mm filter thread so if you have step up rings for your filters, you’re good to go 🖖
I was wondering the same. I have this lens and the 17mm. My thought is that this would be OK on a static B-Cam where you could set the focus and leave it. But I cannot see how to get a follow focus to work with this lens given its shape. Otherwise, something so small, light and capable would have been really nice on a rig.
This lens sucks. I can show you my results. Maybe I got a bad one, but it was awful.
I’m guessing it’s your copy because I’ve got this lens for both apsc and m4/3 and both are fantastic 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Could be. I had heard in other videos that there can be inconsistency from lens to lens (though I don't remember if that was specific to the TTartisan 35mm or another of the ultra-cheap Chinese lenses). Mine was for the Nikon Z fc. The frustrating thing about it was that it would be just fine for several shots and then, out of the blue I'd get a dark/half-dark image. It reminded my of shutter synch issues with a flash where you see half the shutter curtain in the image. At least if I knew, for example, that it always happened at f/4 I'd just avoid f/4 and keep the lens. But it was random, so I sent it back. I suppose it could just be a lemon but I didn't have the patience to try again. It was clear that when it did work the pics were very good. Oh well. Onward.
@Twin_Hook yeah that’s an odd one. I have the trio for apsc, 17, 35 and 50 and I’ve not experienced that. Shame you got a bad one because it really is decent. Of the 3 it’s definitely the sharpest and a great size. The only issues I had with these lenses were with infinity focus not being where it should be, and that’s definitely shoddy QC, but it’s a relatively easy fix.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial It's tempting to try again but I'll see. I could tell it took some very sharp photos and nice in low light. I don't have a lens as fast as that at any focal length so that was part of my motivation. Maybe I'll come back to it one day. It seems like so many people really like it. But, I have enough to keep me busy, so I'll just wait and see.
