I love m43 and came from Canon full frame. I first bought the EM5ii and then added the EM1ii 2 years later. I basically take my EM1ii on special trips like from the States to Europe due to the 2 card slots. I usually take the EM5ii anywhere local--and even took it on a 2 week trip to Missouri from Arizona. One day I put pics I took in Europe with the EM1 on a flash drive and looked them on my 55" 4K TV and was blown away at how beautiful the images were at that resolution and size. I have no need at all for a different camera or larger sensor.
A PEN F ii and GX9ii with latest tech is what most MFT enthusiasts are looking forward. Compact, weatherproofed everday carry cameras with good image quality. What's not there to like them paired with tiny lenses of the system
I am in my 80’s, and the OM 5 has allowed me to continue shooting street photography. If I hadn’t listened to my son I wouldn’t have left LUMIX to try Fuji.
For me, the smaller size and light weight of the lenses is what keeps bringing me back to M 4/3. I actually appreciate the large bodies because they work really well with the longer wildlife lenses I prefer.
I recently got an E-M5 MkII as a replacement for my E-M5 MkI which starts to fail. While the MkII doesn't look like a big upgrade from the MkI on paper, it is a HUGE step up. I just wish I had the MkII much earlier. It feels and handles so much different from the E-M5 MkI and feels like a baby E-M1. It has far more features, much more function buttons.... it's such a joy to use.
Still got mine, after buying used em1 mk2 then mk3 because it was better value than getting a new (at the time) em5 mk3 to replace the older em5 mk2. I can’t bare to part with it even though I’ve been thinking about picking up an OM5 to replace it. Something about that metal body that I prefer over the newer plastic models…waiting to see if a newer OM5 mk2 might sway me to upgrade 😁
I'm hopeful that more people will realize that MFT is where "all of the lines intersect," providing the best balance of performance, portability, features, and value among all current formats. Bridge cameras (like my FZ1000 and the Sony RX10 iii/iv) are an even better value, and honestly, they're way more camera than most of us need most of the time to produce great prints (the only real photos). But, if you want to go wider or longer, you'll obviously need an ILC. That's why I have a G9 and G9M2 with eight lenses (covering 12-800mm EFL), although I don't have a 12-60. That would be very versatile for street/travel use (I carry my whole kit virtually everywhere, but it would be nice not to have to change lenses so often), so I'm considering either the Lumix or Leica version. I love my other Leica lenses, but how much is 0.7-1 stop really worth in this case? I'll check out your video comparison to help me decide!
Thanks guys, enjoyable show. I’ve had M4/3 since the EM5 came out. Currently playing with a GX8 about 8 years old. Absolutely love the OLED EVF and rear screen. Great camera 📸
Hi Matti from Wales, Thanks for another relaxing and informative chat. I'm lucky enough to own cameras in MFT, APS-C and FF, each has its place in my heart. ❤❤❤
That's the thing, the different formats are a richness - not in competition with each other. I also love all the formats as each have their specific strengths. Glad you enjoyed the chat 🙂
Gx9 is still selling used for around $800+ on MPB, used Olympus Pen f around $1200. OM5 new is around $900 new sometimes net of rebates, it does appear to be quite a good camera, but was just an incremental upgrade over the Em5iii. Folks I know who use tend to love it, mostly for travel and an EDC. Nice conversion guys! Like Matti would love to see a new small LUMIX.
I just bought a MINT copy of the E-M5ii. I love the all metal body and simplicity of it. It's compact and I got it with the grip and battery extender for under $500. I already have an OM-1, E-M1iii, Pen-F, E-P5, and E-PL9, so the E-M5ii might be excessive, but I enjoy using it.
I go by item continuation...not so much on new features.....The GX9 is my favorite stills camera for M43...Sony a7c and or Canon eosRP are my favorites for full frame.
Hi Matti, it's nice to see your guest Alexi again on this video. And I enjoyed the conversation and chat you had with Alexi, Also the photos you both took were very nice. Thanks Matti and Alexi. 😊
Great video! MFT is a versatile and fun system, from casual walk-arounds to serious shoots. Started with the G1, then loved the EM5, but the system really began to hit its stride with the EM1ii. The Oly 75mm f1.8 is simply the best, and the 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro is such a pleasure.
I still own both the original E-M1 and E-m5 and never going to sell them, I love them both so much. The lenses I shoot the most are the 20mm 1.7 and the 12-45mm f/4. I'm waiting for a new model in the GX or GM line to have something truly compact as edc.
Hello Matti, thanks for this video. I am still using a 2013 Olympus OMD EM1. It was ahead of its time when released over 10 years ago. This camera still produces some excellent wildlife images when paired with the Olympus 300mm f4 prime lens or the PL 100 - 400mm zoom. For serious bird images I am also using the OM - 1 and the newer tech makes it less challenging than using the EM1, albeit that it is good to fall back on some basic photography skills when using the older camera system. The form factor is ideal for the wildlife genre.
Fun and nice vid. Some more pics when your out shooting and it would have been perfect. A new really small m43 with phase would be a killer streetcamera for me. But im happy with the gm1, gx800 and the gx9. All great and fun.
I traveled for three weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia with the EM-1 Mark III and the EM5 Mark III. I took the 12-100mm F4, 12-45mm F4 Pro, 25mm F1.2, and 70-300mm lenses with me, but the most used one was the 12-100mm F4. After two weeks of travel, I was so exhausted from carrying the EM1 Mark III with the 12-100mm lens that I switched to the EM5 Mark III with the 12-45mm F4 and never looked back. That combination was so fun to use and reminded me of what MFT was all about. It is a shame that both Olympus and Panasonic drifted away from the MFT ethos when they decided to compete with full-frame cameras head-to-head. That’s what doomed them, especially Olympus, because at least Panasonic had the video makers' market. Nowadays, I don't see any reason to buy an MFT camera unless you are a dead-serious videographer. Maybe one day we will see a GX9II or LX100 Mark III from Panasonic or a baby OM-1 from OM Systems, but the chances of that are close to zero.
My big attraction to m4/3 is the small size being a small person the smaller form factor is great. I have a canon 5d classic it’s a wonderful camera but it is so big and bulky that I seldom ever use it except for landscape yet I don’t want to get rid of it 🤷🤷😵💫😵💫.
I would like to see a real successor to the GX8. The GX 9 is really just a GX7 III, and I think it's a real shame that the GX8 wasn't continued. A GX8 II, with a PDAF and 20Mpix (please not 25Mpix, because of diffraction), a high-quality folding viewfinder... and maybe just a tick smaller...
Good points the size is where it wins and recently camera releases have gone against that. I did however like the g100 wirh the 20mm for shooting street. It was nice and small and took amazing pictures. For some reason I miss the 4:3 aspect ratio too
It doesn’t win though. The lens are smaller because they have smaller physical aperture and smaller entrance pupils. For the equivalent entrance pupil vs full frame - it’s the same size lense and more expensive. The economics of MFT is really gone.
@@JeffBourke In terms of absolute size it wipes the floor with other formats. Not everyone wants or needs super shallow DoF all the time. But talking equivalents, yes I agree.
I do enjoy Matti’s videos, he comes across as such an amiable guy. I have come to the conclusion that photography equipment is simply a matter of marketing. If you just like taking snaps then you are steered towards the best mobile camera. If you are a professional you are steered towards full frame with all the gimmicks and if you are an enthusiast you just keep buying and buying. For years I have been in this latter category when really photography is all about the image and the light for which a basic camera is perfectly adequate, Most of us don’t really need IBIS, we don’t need very fast shutter speeds, we don’t need enormously high ISOs, or indeed weather sealing. We just need to find great subjects, super light and comfortable shoes to take us around with our cameras.
The larger MFT bodies are fine for a variety of use cases. To complete the lineup though, Panasonic really should bring out a smaller rangefinder style camera with phase detect autofocus, good IBIS, solid but maybe not top spec video, and ideally the 25mp sensor. And a viewfinder. It would be a great travel and street photography camera. OM could do something similar with a Pen F update. Those cameras would have a lot of takers if they could price them reasonably (a decent amount under the G9ii and OM1), I think, and quieten much of the criticism that the manufacturers and the system gets.
I have OM5 with 12-45, 25mm 1.8 and 45mm 1.8. Love all of the lenses. I was also considering leica 25mm 1.4 and 15mm 1.7. I believe there will be OM5 mark II with OM1 hardware. They need to do it, can't offer just one "new" camera. In fact OM haven't offer any completely new camera to us yet. OM1 (I +II) is just old Olympus development, OM5 too...
i tried an OM5...had to return it...the firmware was terrible. When I tried to shoot auto ISO, it locked up consistently, requiring me to turn it off and on.
Same with Aleksi. Couple years ago I thought M43 was on the way out and FF was the future because it's becoming quite cheap. I do like the fact that FF is affordable with high quality now especially with the Z5 or the R8 offerings. But there is always something about the M43 that's quite special, even after my adventure with the Nikon FF or the Sony.
Thanks for an interesting video, with some great images. I purchased a used GX9 about 12 months ago, as I found my G9, although a great camera, not the best for EDC (weight and size) and street work. In the end, I found myself using just the GX9 , so sold the G9 and recently purchased a heavily discounted new OM5 with the 12-45mm f4 lens, as I needed a small, lightweight m43 camera which was weather sealed. I think both are great little cameras and produce good IQ. Both have their disadvantages, but I will stick with m43 because they are fun! Interesting that Leica has just launched their new m43 compact - will be watching the sales on that one, as it seems very similar to an older Lumix model!
I have enabled the electronic first curtain shutter to eliminate that possibility as it is quite common with cameras from this period. On the OM-D it is called (0 second) Antishock shutter. I highly recommend switching it on if you are experiencing shutter shock issues with some lenses.
I've invested in the Fuji system: XT4, XT5, lenses... it's undeniably excellent equipment. But I always come back to my M43 equipment. My EM5 and Pen-f continue to give me fantastic results with unrivalled portability. For everyday photography and travel, nothing can compete.
Would this be the original em5? I bought mine many years ago and only started using regularly the last 2 years. I love the size of body, functions and photo quality.
I went chonky m43 route - 40-150/2.8 and 300/4 are my main lenses. I absolutely love the setup with my OM-1ii, but I gotta admit - I really hope OM releases a new Pen-F. It would be a perfect pair with 20/1.4 and 75/1.8, for photo walks and nighttime city exploration.
I love MFT. I keep eyeing Nikon Z5 and may eventuakly get one (used) to try FF, but at the end of the day I love lenses like the 20mm f/1.4 and they give a good balance of DoF flexibility and letting in enough light to offset the poorer performance at high ISO. And honestly the newer post software is ao good with noise that low-light perfirmance is becoming less important. I should be hooy with what I have and look at new lenses to expand my shooting possibilities instead of new bodies/systems. I do wish for an om-5ii or a GX10 (or maybe PEN-F). The GX8 was wonderful but would like something that performs on par in terms of IQ with OM-1 or G9ii.
Great video guys. A sticking shutter on my low shutter count EM5 mkiii was enough to move me to Sony. A shame but the improved dynamic range and still relatively small size of the a6500 plus the Tamron & Samyang FE prime lens sizes has convinced me I don’t need to return to MFT. Also the RX100 mkiii is an ideal travel camera.
My wish on micro four thirds gear: A camera like Gx9 or G95, with 30 or more megapixels and a super-zoom lens between 24-200 mm starting on 2.8 and preference max 4.0. A dream 🙂
The E-M5II is still my favorite camera. Still using it all the time, with my E-M1 in 2nd place. My Panasonic LX-100 is the one I always have in my purse either as a backup or to use when out and about. I bought a Fuji XT3 because of all the hype about Fuji cameras but, to me, it's not as much fun and less convenient than any of my Olympus cameras. Nice camera, but It just sits on my shelf most of the time and I have to make myself use it. I don't expect to ever get rid of any of these cameras, and currently see no need to buy a new digital camera.
When this video was published that was the week when I bought my Panasonic S9 with the tiny and lovely Sigma compact 17mm f4 lens. This camera is fantastic and as small as the Fujifilm X-T50. Smaller than any recent micro 4/3 cameras. The S9 with the fantastic Sigma uniform, gorgeous looking, high performing, compact lenses: 17, 20, 24, 35, 45, 50, 65, 90 completely eradicated my desire towards micro 4/3 and Fujifilm. Panasonic completed the mission.
Small for Travel and Walk-around is the strength of u4/3. They already have fantastic lenses therefore now is the time to bring out the likes of the E-M10 and GX9 with the latest (G9II) sensor at a reasonable price. To price at, or higher, than APS-C or FF will/would cause market place failure.
Olympus still need to prove they still have the capability to actually build new substantive products. We've seen either pre-split products, or minor updates to existing hardware, along with some rebodied 3rd party lenses. It doesn't build confidence. My EM5 mk3 is still a great camera, I'm in no hurry for anything new, but right not I'm not sure we'll ever see a replacement. A lumix gx10 would be nice to see, the S9 really didn't make sense to me (i guess they wanted a lightweight l-mount).
My wish for a new mft cam would be a new Pen F or GX8 with the new sensor, af and maybe some kind of film simulation (like on Fuji‘s)…they have to be weather sealed and compact. There are so much great lenses for mft and i got a few of them…so hopefully there will be a updated small and good spect cam for them.
I use em1 whith 12-40 2.8. 25 mm 1.2 is second lens. But for funny photography (travel, family, ecc..) in this moment I think for me is better to find an A7S to use with my zuiko vintage lens. Manual focus and FF with less megapixel is a better way..
It is always good to see you out with your GX9! My GX9 is still going strong, the IBIS is working for me 🙂 I think the price for a new mid-range m43 camera has to be near 1100 because it is difficult to compete with the Fuji and Sony alternatives. Panasonic have undoubtedly lost sales due to not having a lower end model. Ok, I know the G100 is there but it has no IBIS, it was a step back from GX and the G90 models. Let's hope for a GX9 II soon. They have a few months before Fuji release the XE5 in 2025. I bet it has IBIS. If it does, it will match the GX9. Maybe time to switch systems? This is the problem Pany has. They are missing sales and pushing customers away.
something like small capable cameras are for example fuji xe, xt, but there are too expensive probably.. also they are usually less hybrid, more focused on photography, stils only I think
The GX-9 may be the end. It has great specs for a MFT camera for travel or street photography. Looks and works great with the Leica 15mm lens. I still use some Olympus cameras and lenses as well on the street. After buying the Nikon Z5, the future for me, at this time, is leaning towards going mostly into Nikon again. Might even get a Z50 one fine day. I must admit the Ricoh Gr IIIx is interesting. I am pretty impressed so far with the Nikon Z5 + 40mm combo I have been using, though the focusing seems to be slightly slower than using MFT -- depending on lenses used, of course. The 50mm Nikkor f1.8 from what I have read, is sharp, but is that size of lens and weight worth it to carry about on the street? For years now I have been using only a wrist strap. For heavier gear, is the old shoulder strap a better choice. The straps, it seems, can get in the way --- what ya think? MFT future, I think is very uncertain, though many of use have more than one MFT and many lenses, thus it lives for use, for 3,5, maybe 10 yrs. more? - Loren
Matti, can I ask you for advice please. I have a gx9 with various lenses but I also have 2 lenses left from a previous Pentax. for general use in the mountains, landscapes and some animals, do you recommend a g9 with 14-140 or a pentax kf with 18-135? Thx
That is a matter of taste and I can't really say which one works for you. Pick the one that you like more. I would probably take the GX9 because I like mirrorless but the Pentax is a fine camera too.
I saw comments on the G9 and G9 mk2 about the size of the camera on other sites, they fit my large hands well, ergonomic, My comment is that when i used the 100 - 400 on my smaller bodied g series, there was an imbalance, however when using g9 with smaller sized lenses, Primes 9mm 25 mm etc, it they are perfect, I myself would prefer that M43 bodies keep the larger size because its easier to have a slightly heavier camera when outdoor with a bit of wind, I know ita not on this post but pause for thought, thanks, Colin James Inglis.
I also personally think there is certainly a place for larger MFT bodies also. For example the G9II is not in any way too big in my opinion and feels just right in the hands. Also it is 80 grams lighter than the S5II although they share the same chassis. Together with a befitting lens it is a really nice and ergonomic combination.
Had the first em-5 until 2020 or so before switching to FF and aps-c. Don't think that one had the hi-res mode yet, but for me it was excellent for some handheld macro work, together with excellent Olympus 60 mm macro lens. Had other lenses of course too...have regretted giving that camera away as it was such a joy to shoot with.
The E-M5ii is a lovely stills camera but I originally got it hoping to use it as B-Cam to my GH4. The battery grips do give it a headphone out. It can only shoot FHD not UHD (4K) and after a short while the sensor gets hot turning the footage magenta, this is mentioned in its manual. It is currently wearing the Leica 25/1.4 with its awkward won't reverse square hood but I had to trade my first 25/1.4 to get the Lumix G7 to be the B-Cam, a job the G7 does well. The G7 is about as versatile as the E-M5ii but the E-M5ii has better haptics. You ask which is my favourite MFT. That is hard to chose but the one I will grab and go would be the tiny E-PL7, with the VF4, loaded with the Lumix PZ14-42 and carrying the little PZ45-175. Having had the 12-32 on the GM1 (gone) and the 14-42EZ on the E-PL1 (gone), the PZ14-42 is by some way the best pancake power zoom. My newest camera is the Lumix G9. I got that to handle the PL100-400 for wildlife, but the latest offerings are not enticing me. What I would like is a small-form camera with an all metal body, tilt monitor, and LVF.
I don’t understand OM’s bet to focus on action and wildlife. For me, MFT is ideal for all round and street photography, having small lenses and a large depth of field.
Hi Matti I love so much my gx8 I use with an olympus 12-40 f2.8 and also with the 25mm f1.4. And also with an old Canon FD 55mm f1.2 that provide a crazy quality … Sure now I’m dreaming for a Gx8 mark II with a new AF generation Hi res feature and a live composite mode and with light touch would be perfect for me … I’m really hangry against the g9 mark II (to big) and the S9 (a joke ?!!) and really don’t understand Pana for those choice … So please ! Give us a Gx8 and Gx9 Mark II !
Last year I had to have a little tune up to P, but my go to mode is aperture priority, I don't use auto ISO, I like to control ISO depending upon what I am photographing. Take care guys.
Hey Matti and Alexi, I really enjoy the videos of both of you. As Matti knows I enjoy m43 a lot, the setup Aleksi is using but with the em5iii is my travel favourite. Its a very compact combo the ez kit lens and together with the Lumix 20mm, I love it, both by image quality and specs. Regarding a new m43 câmera, I would be willing to get a new om5 camera with good specs, but pricewise... Probably no more than around 1300 euros top price and with a lens of some kind I didn't have yet. Aleksi should try and have an RUclips Chanel of course, I would follow you. And like I did with Matti and Peter, whenever you are in Lisboa, Portugal please let me know, just ask Matti, I am a good host!! Matti my friend, and Aleksi too, all the best to both of you and your families.
Why your GX9 IBIS was broken? It was just a 5-year-old camera as you said, not that old. We know that the DSLR camera shutter can die. What a surprise that mirrorless cameras also can die because of the IBIS (vibrating too much)?
I still use my EP5 with the tiltable(!) VF-2 viewfinder. This is a light, versatile and compact set, which I can combine with the lens of choice. Even fully equipped with the travel zoom collection 12-32, 14-150, an 70-300 the camera set weighs incl. photobag and spare batteries, just about 1850g. This would also apply for a photowalk set with the prime lens incl. my highly beloved 1.8/75. I currently do not see a potential replacement on the market, whilst hoping for a EP-5+, but knowing it will most likely not arrive. The current path to bulkier models is, to my opinion, a dead end for OM-Systems.
I had an ep5 which was great except the front dial was starting to not work reliably, common problem. I also wanted built in viewfinder so traded for a EM 5 mkii. I like 4/3 for small size with good image quality, and I really like olympus colors. If I was looking for something new from micro 4/3 I'd want it SMALL, with small prime lenses. APSC and even some full frame are starting to get smaller so idk if it would work to make new micro 4/3 unless they could make it very small. Another reason I'm into 4/3 now is most of the older models are cheap with cheap quality lenses. New stuff wouldn't be cheap.
We need a m43 that fits in our pockets. A lumix GM styled perhaps. A few millimeters less in width than GM1, with a body cap lens, a pop-up evf and rearrange the buttons and dials a bit for ergonomics if possible. If it fits in your pocket, the it can challenge the GRIIIx. Lumix could add the LUT feature to compete against Fuji's simulations. Also the softness of a body cap lens can give you the same 'filmic' look as an old ccd point & shoot.😅 The best thing is, being m43 there is always a great lens out there that feels just right, regardless of your style.
Yes, m43, a fun camera system that bring creativity and spontaneity. The other (unnamed) is work and fighting the camera. Albeit, since you put in all this work (also work in lugging it along) the picture have to be better. ..... right??
If I had joined you two on that photo walk, I would have chosen my Panasonic GM5 with Pana/Leica 15/1.7 and Pana/Leica 45/2.8 macro with my GM1. Too bad the prices of the two cameras have now gone sky high on eBay. About $1000 for the GM5 and close to half that for the GM1. I also have the Oly Pen-F, they are also going up in price on eBay.
@@Aleksilausti Don't underestimate the GM1. I've used it for portraits with the Pana/Leica 45/2.8. That lens has VR and GM1 has a bigger screen. That fits in my palm, then I can see the subject and wait for the moment. Perfect when photographing people who don't like being taken pictures of.
@@Aleksilausti I was lucky. Got my GM1 with the 12-32 kit zoom. Later, at the end of the sales periode, they sold the GM5 with the 15/1.7 under the price of the lens.
@@protestagainI've no doubt the GM1 is a powerful little camera also. I actually never tried one but I have owned the GM5 before. I will keep an eye out for a GM1 if I see one at a good price. Would be fun to test it out.
I agree that 1,100 is an unrealistic price point for a new camera, but I also think there is a difference between what people wish for vs what they will buy. I don't have a problem with 1,800 for a new m4/3 camera that has what a want (basically a gx9ii but perhaps with a gx80-sized body). As you say, compactness is the strength of m4/3 and I think the companies really hurt themselves by making ever-larger cameras. Just look at the success of Ricoh GR3/x. I know, I have them, too. I would like a GR3 HDF but you can't get one. They sell out. That could have been a Panasonic/Olympus market share.
Thanks for sharing. The GR3/x is pretty much dominating one small niche and selling surprisingly well. You'd think that there would be room for another similar camera.
I like those summer photo walks with Aleksi. He should start a channel. My only complaint is that you guys didn’t take us with you to the coffee shop afterwards 😃 cheers from Seattle!
yes aleksi ill sub if you make a channel! shame about the broken IBIS on your GX9. i use aperture priority a lot. i kinda miss my EM5iii but i really wanted the GH5ii and had to trade it in. i want an OM10, so its like the OM-5, with PDAF, just missing LiveND and i would love to have it.
Small size and rigs with big pictures. GH7 is still good with tiny lenses and that's the secret of my mobile filmmaking. But the size of the GH7 should be brought down in the ghs 8
I would say that my EM-5III is easily the best handling camera I have. My small hands fit nicely. Here (N.E. England) the weather has suddenly changed from 12 C and rain to 20+ and sunshine, so my favourite lens is the Oly 60mm Macro now that I can get low down among the wild flowers. I can't see that there can be any worthwhile improvements to MFT for my sort of photography, These days cameras 'need' esoteric video modes which are of no interest to me. I have a few other cameras. My X-H2 has a lovely viewfinder but it's so big. I'm starting to use my LX100 again, I like the exposure comp knob which I prefer to an ISO knob which other 'traditional' cameras have. I'm not planning to buy anything new, the cameras I have are good enough.
Thank you for an other very good video, nice to see Aleksi again, yes he should start a youtube channel, he does not need to do as many videos as you Matti. If I should have a new (future) MTF Camera, then first of all, it has to be VERY compact ! I do not want a low end or medium price range MTF camera, II want a High end MTF Camera, with a big EVF in the corner with high resolution (at least 5.8 mega dots) and very good magnification, easy to do manual operating of shutter and ISO, easy menu settings and custom settings. I do not care about the backside screen, it can be small, cheap and non-articulating. There also has to be new compact High end Lenses. OM System and/or Panasonic could also be first with a Camera in style with Contax T (first version !) or Minox 35 ML with an EVF, THAT will be a Camera I will buy !
How does its AF stack up today and does it have eye detection or anything? I like the build quality of the mk2 over the plastic mk3, but not sure if the other changes in the MK3 are worth the price difference. There's also the em10mk4
Its so lovely to here you talk nicly about MFT. Yes, you are right, its fun, its against the mainstream, but fun and easy. Its good enough, but MFT lacks a corner right now. I really want a street photo campaign. A cooperative campaign among the manufacturers. Unfortunatelly its late in the summer now to start ut, so next spring. Well, campaign centered around Leica D-Lux8, a similar Leica with lens mount, Lumix cameras that is like the S9 and one as the ricoh GR3, but in MFT of course, and some other tiny fun cameras and social mecia video centric tinys, Olympus with PEN-F2pro, PEN-M3, PEN-L12, OM-10 and a cheep stripped version maybe called OM-50. and a vlogging camera PEN-V(?) with mostly vlogging centric best OM IBIS and light as a PEL-L12. and I also want Olympus sorry OMDS to make a GR3 competitor with top IBIS, fixed 1,8 lens, and classic oly style. Together with this, i wish that all MFT lens manufacturers make one or two tiny lenses, OM of course weather sealed, and Leica as their speciality quality, metal, style. And Sigma and Lumix with what they are good at. I want it to arrive with a bang this comming winter and spring. Ohh, please Camera God. I pray for this. Give the world this peacefull and joyfull tiny world. I am so sad that OM System dont compete in tiny PEN world right now (sorry Oly PEN-EP7)
Panasonic and OM are not listening to anyone other than wildlife photographers or video creators. And while I value both of those genres, I’m no longer waiting for a new compact M43 camera. If one arrives, great, but it will be years late for my purposes.
I hope they, when they now have the wildlife and video market in their hands, that they re-enters the Street photo market with a bang. They got what it needs, but just have to be pushed back in the direction. Look at what cameras are released right now. A lot of fun factor cameras like Pentax 17, Lumix S9, Fuji 100VI, Kodak compacts, Leica D-Lux8 and so on. The market longs for new fun tiny MFT cameras.
@@sweden_ove2074 they don't, and never will have the Wildlife market: professionals know birds are not standing still, and don't like to rest in bright light. When you are spending so much on lenses, whatever the format, you cannot afford to be held back by terrible High Iso performances and know how much cropping is important. What we are been feed with on social medias are either wannabe or sponsored "influences": real people, who get paid for their pictures, will always get a high end FF professional cameras with appropriate lenses rather then M43 cameras because they are cheap and light to carry around.
I love my GX9. It came with the 12-60 kit lens. As I already have the PL12-60 I was going to sell the kit lens to lower the price of the body. Turns out I really like this lens. I frequently bring the 12-60 along with the PL15 lens. The M43 gods are punishing me. I wanted to try a full frame camera. I was seduced by the autofocus raves about the S5ii. The PDAF is rubbish. It only focused about 70% of the time. I’m going back to the contrast based DFD. It may not be the fastest but it does lock onto the subject. I’m selling the camera to some other sucker and return to M43 bodies. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@@mattisulanto Redid my focus settings. The camera is autofocusing a little better. Still finding the DFD more accurate focus than PDAF. Sometimes the autofocus doesn’t work. Very frustrating. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Back in the days before Panasonic released full frame, or right after they did so, the future of m43 was not clear. There was even prediction of the death of it. Now it's a few years down the timeline, and both OM and Pana had released a few more m43 cameras, I think it will stay in the market for a few more years to go. Why not longer? I saw that the Panasonic S9 is going to tackle the small form factor requirement. I predict: m43 would stay on, mostly in the direction where OM is going: higher end, more capable ones. The idea is that the lens system is way more portable than FF ones. So for bird shooters, some sport shooters and travel/action shooters, the overall system would be much more luggable. The opposite end of development is less likely: phones are getting much better, with better lenses and picture quality. So a compact and light m43 with lesser quality is unlikely to be popular.
Traduci il testo con la fotocamera today the entry level camera or similar no longer makes sense. only the form in which to insert the technology without castrations makes sense
Lots of complaining about MFT costs....the latest FF bodies by Sony amd Nikon that get fawning reviews are WAY out of my price range. Then throw in the higher lens costs and I dont find FF systems very cost effective for advanced amateurs. I got into MFT late last year after decades with Nikon DSLRs. I was planning to go into Nikon Z series cameras but the body and lens costs were too much for me. I saw how relatively inexpensive and capable MFT gear was on the used market and it was an easy decision after that.
Matti, If the average consumer wants to pay in Europe around €1100,- then it will be difficult for m43 gets enough revenue in a complcted market with a lot of FF and APS-C camera around that price. The Fuji X-S20 is around the price, where the previous X-S10 has allready dropped under €1000,-. I find it a pity that people attack you when you make this type of vdeo, when you point that m43 is strugling and why. Seems many need to be feeling good.
Thanks. In the video we are talking about new camera prices at the time of the launch. After some time the price will drop, of course, as has happened with the Fuji you mention, for example.
MFT has to produce small cameras because that would be the only reason that would separate them from the competition. This is what made them market leaders a few years ago. And the market needs small camera because there is nothing like that these days. Since they make cameras as big as the competition that has FF sensors and the same price, they have absolutely no chance to survive. MFT producers must return to their origins, all MFT lovers are waiting for the sequels to the GM, GX, Pen, OM-D series, small cameras that can be taken anywhere, not huge bodies of the caliber of FF cameras.
I’m an MFT fan but the system is now too expensive. Flagship body is too expensive and the lenses, for something good and equivalent in FF is actually more expensive and a poor investment.
Thanks. I tend to agree with you. However, I think it's not easy to make a compelling camera that's also very affordable. The volumes are not what they used to be 10-15 years ago.
M 4/3 gets a 10 out of 10 on the fun scale. I have apsc & FF but m 4/3 just has a great enjoyment factor.
I have the OM-5. Absolutely love it . Pairs well with the 12-45 f/4 and the 20mm f/1.4. Great for walkabouts.
The fun part of m4/3 is in the size of the lenses.
A MFT promotion! At last some recognition for a great system.
But of course😀
A PEN F ii and GX9ii with latest tech is what most MFT enthusiasts are looking forward. Compact, weatherproofed everday carry cameras with good image quality. What's not there to like them paired with tiny lenses of the system
Id prefer it to be a GX8 ii, the 9 always felt like a downgrade and more of a successor to the GX80 to me.
I'm only a hobbyist but m43 is the most fun system! Most important factor that kept me into photography :)
Thanks. Fun is important!😀
Thanks. Every format has its place😀
I love my gx80 as it fits in the pocket and comes everywhere with me, would love a newer version with better focus
Nice walk, i used to have the om5 M1 and regret having sold it, still use m'y super reliable Em1 M3. Now OM system is the Time to release a Pen f
Our pleasure!
Thank you kindly! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Thanks Matti 😊
@@Aleksilausti Your welcome Alexi 😊
Great video guys i wish panny would make a GX8 with a monochrome sensor. If they did then i would buy back into the mft system.
I really like the compact size of the E-M5 MKII its much smaller than my Huttig Merkur from 1900s and no plates or chemicals to deal with.
I still own both the original E-M1 and E-m5 and never going to sell them, I love them both so much. The lenses I shoot the most are the 20mm 1.7 and the 12-45mm f/4. I'm waiting for a new model in the GX or GM line to have something truly compact as edc.
Em 10 is my fav by default because it’s my only one. I’d like to find a reasonably priced PenF
Thanks. It's always a compromise when you go out shooting both video and photos. We always do the best we can😀
Great video, Matti. Fun stuff! :)
Thanks, blues master. Much appreciated.
Always loved MFT. Had a few. I do also love my tried and tested mint NEX5. Great cameras that dont break the bank.
yes. what do you use such nice cameras for? I recommend a couple bench to sit and chat on? 😊. Thank you for the nice conversation
For some reason I miss the 4:3 aspect ratio too
The 4:3 is a really nice aspect ratio.
Thanks for your kind words.
Size and weight. This is why we want and love MFT. There should be more offers for thin bodies and pancake lenses.
Very nice (duo) video. I was hoping to hear from Alexi if he noticed any shutter shock problems at his camera. Cheers
I have enabled the electronic first curtain shutter to eliminate that possibility as it is quite common with cameras from this period. On the OM-D it is called (0 second) Antishock shutter. I highly recommend switching it on if you are experiencing shutter shock issues with some lenses.
Thanks a lot. Hope to see on future videos or on your own channel!
@@kinlungchanIt's the em5 mk III. Fantastic camera.
A dream 🙂
Now that's a dream. Let's hope some day you'll see that for real😀
Great videos of yours Matti, as usual. Proud user of MFT cameras since 2008 (LUMIX G1). Never looked back...
Thanks so much for watching.
Good ol em5. Liked the shutter sound of that legacy camera back in the day. Went for ricoh gr3 for portability and it is more fun one hand weapon.😂
The GR3 is a beast in a pocket size😀
Small for Travel and Walk-around is the strength of u4/3. They already have fantastic lenses therefore now is the time to bring out the likes of the E-M10 and GX9 with the latest (G9II) sensor at a reasonable price. To price at, or higher, than APS-C or FF will/would cause market place failure.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Fun video, thanks. How did you discover the broken IBIS Matti? Any idea how it happened?
Thanks. If I have the IBIS turned on I get shaky photos 100%. It seems to go totally wild on its own. I have no idea what happened or how.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Interesting to see what happens with MFT in the near future.
I want to see a M43 Android-based camera. The quality of M4/3 with computational photography and social media capabilities.
something like small capable cameras are for example fuji xe, xt, but there are too expensive probably.. also they are usually less hybrid, more focused on photography, stils only I think
MFT future, I think is very uncertain, though many of use have more than one MFT and many lenses, thus it lives for use, for 3,5, maybe 10 yrs. more?

Matti, can I ask you for advice please. I have a gx9 with various lenses but I also have 2 lenses left from a previous Pentax. for general use in the mountains, landscapes and some animals, do you recommend a g9 with 14-140 or a pentax kf with 18-135? Thx
That is a matter of taste and I can't really say which one works for you. Pick the one that you like more. I would probably take the GX9 because I like mirrorless but the Pentax is a fine camera too.
@@mattisulanto thx
The new D-Lux 8 from Leica is already sold out and it’s priced at $1599!
Thanks. The original E-M5 did not have the high res mode.
I’m wondering how much the lack of working IBIS is affecting your operation inP. I would think it could be’the’ majority of the problem.
It's a limitation in low light but it's not an issue in other situations. Would be nice if worked though, of course😀
Thanks for sharing. The hood on the 25mm is weird design indeed but the lens is super nice.
I don’t understand OM’s bet to focus on action and wildlife. For me, MFT is ideal for all round and street photography, having small lenses and a large depth of field.
That's what we don't understand either. Maybe they can't do everything and decided to go that route.
Absolutely! And why every brand goes to Video features?
Hi Matti
I love so much my gx8 I use with an olympus 12-40 f2.8 and also with the 25mm f1.4.
Thank you very kind of you! Now I have already two people who have said they would subscribe - that's a start 🙂All the best to you and yours too.
Why your GX9 IBIS was broken? It was just a 5-year-old camera as you said, not that old. We know that the DSLR camera shutter can die. What a surprise that mirrorless cameras also can die because of the IBIS (vibrating too much)?
I have no idea what happened. One day I noticed that no IBIS any more.
New stuff wouldn't be cheap.
i hope panasonic make gh7 senser into GM1. this is a dream camera
Also the softness of a body cap lens can give you the same 'filmic' look as an old ccd point & shoot.😅
The best thing is, being m43 there is always a great lens out there that feels just right, regardless of your style.
E-P7 🤫
A fixed lens camera like the GRiii but with a faster lens would be beautiful.
Thanks for sharing. You and your setup would be most welcome to any photo walk with us😀
The GM5 is such a great little camera. I might have to reacquire one. Sometimes you can still find them at decent prices.
@@mattisulanto Indeed.
I like those summer photo walks with Aleksi. He should start a channel. My only complaint is that you guys didn’t take us with you to the coffee shop afterwards 😃 cheers from Seattle!
Thanks so much. There was only two seats available at the coffee shop😀
@@mattisulanto I see. Always a pleasure joining you guys on the walk.
are you sure that ois in pana 12-60 is not working? 1 stop from ibis is not a big deal.
Yes, I'm sure it's the IBIS.
yes aleksi ill sub if you make a channel! shame about the broken IBIS on your GX9. i use aperture priority a lot. i kinda miss my EM5iii but i really wanted the GH5ii and had to trade it in.
i want an OM10, so its like the OM-5, with PDAF, just missing LiveND and i would love to have it.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@mattisulanto all good friend! small ILCs from Panasonic and OM System really needs to make a comeback.
Thanks, good to know 🙂
Small size and rigs with big pictures.
You guys are fun characters... stay on 1 channel 😊
Thanks, we do our best to be fun😀
❤Hi Matti, I'm a M4/3 enthusiast❤
They have to lean towards the "old vintage tactile mechanical feeling" Fuji pioneered. More brass, more leather, more mechanical dials.
Thanks! You have quite a wish list😀
@@mattisulanto Yes ☺ I am a bit greedy 😬I like excellent quality.
I have to say that the Olympus e-m5 mk ii is one of the best values on the used market today. It is a GREAT little camera!
Absolutely! Thanks for sharing.
It really is a great camera and truly great value for money on the used market. Love it!
Suvilahti 😎
Indeed😀
cold or not cold?
That's the question😀
@@mattisulanto my father always said: work if you are cold 🥶

Interesting to hear your experience with the S5II because I have the S5IIX and to me the AF seems really good.
@@mattisulanto Redid my focus settings. The camera is autofocusing a little better. Still finding the DFD more accurate focus than PDAF. Sometimes the autofocus doesn’t work. Very frustrating.

For sure I would subscribe if Aleksi would start a channel!

today the entry level camera or similar no longer makes sense. only the form in which to insert the technology without castrations makes sense
Agreed. And the lenses are bulky and heavy unless you stick to a prime lens.
Respectfully disagree about the OM-5. It's a freakin' E-M1 Mark III stuffed into an E-M5 sized/priced camera. Geeeeez, fellas!!!! WTF do you want?
We respect your opinion as much as you respect ours and we are extremely happy to hear that you are a happy OM-5 user. WTF😀
I appreciate every comment but no need to post the same comment multiple times. It's called spamming and we generally don't like it.
I really don't care if M43 has a future.
After a decade of use I no longer recommend it nor will I buy another m43 camera or lens.
