Loved this commentary, especially specific examples of why to stick with micro four thirds. When I go to photography classes or group photo excursions, I'm the only one with an Olympus/OM camera and I have to explain myself as to why I don't carry my Canon 6D Mark II instead. I feel a bit inferior, but this video reminded me that I get the shots that bring me joy, which is what really matters.

I sold all of my aging Fuji cameras (x-t2 and x-e1) and all Fuji lenses (great lenses but “midrange” quality). Took advantage of all of the Fuji hype and actually made some profit off of selling them. Made enough to buy an om1-ii, 12-40 F2.8 pro and 40-150 f2.8 pro. Went from mid tier to absolutely bonkers top tier, best camera buying decision ever!
It all started with finding a cheap Olympus e-p5 and the 17mmf2.8. I loved the combo so much it’s still my everyday carry!
With IBIS I hardly use a tripod anymore either. Pretty liberating!
Thanks for the video, agreed 100%

yup love that strategy - when everyone zigs, you zag. M43 vs. APS-C is very similar in sensor size. as long as you're willing to give up the film sims, I think you can get a lot more for your money in M43. and we haven't considered the pros of M43 depending on your shooting genres like 2x crop factor, weather sealing, weight, etc.

@@jayoungrnI have cameras from m4/3, APSC Fuji XT2 & X100V and FF. I’m keeping m4/3, in fact I re-built my m4/3 kits last year as I think this format offer more unique functionality vs APSC. In particular best in class IBIS, focus stacking (for macro), built-in ND, smaller size long zoom lenses and relatively small weather resistant bodies. Having FF & m4/3 makes APSC falls in between with nothing unique aside from film simulation. Having said that I do love my x100v and would trade my xt2 if and when Fuji finally releases XPro4.

@@frankygamaliano7058 Fuji has focus stacking and the IBIS is great - neither has great autofocus for moving objects
The smaller telephoto lenses is nice but the decent 4/3 ones are just as expensive as the Fuji ones and the Fuji sensor is significantly better. Having a small package is not helpful if you are stuck with a noisy 4/3 sensor

Thank you for talking complete sense and making it about the person and what they want to shoot other than an 'influencer' approach trying to ram a product or system down our throats. I have pretty much had a camera of all sensor sizes over the years and have no preference to any of them. I currently have a FF and a 1" sensor camera and I am happy taking either of them out with me. Fantastic “sober” and very real presentation. Your photos are showing that the photographer is the most important element in creating great art, especially if you use an amazing instrument. As unbelievable as it may sound, of my most treasured images were taken on an XZ with a minute sensor. Even today having an OM1 mkii plus EM 1 mk ii and iii, I can’t say there is more emotional content. However since the EM1 mk ii, I was so enjoying photography that I gave my Nikon d800 plus all that went with it, as great as it was, away and have not looked back. That is simply stated, Olympus /OM Systems are giving me everything I could ever want.

While I don't feel competent enough with the system or format to rave or critique it, I'd like to think I am open-minded enough to stick with this system, learn it and use it to its best effect. Thank you for addressing the subject so effectively and fairly.

    Thanks for the video, Chris.
I’m in my dotage and my youth and middle age has caught up with me. I broke three vertebrae and further damaged my back by cycling. It’s meant carrying heavy gear around is beyond me. My local camera shop showed me the Panasonic 100-300, that’s 200-600 in ‘old money’. I bought a Panasonic G7, an F1.4, 25mm (50) and the 100-300 in addition to the kit 14-140.
I can carry all three lenses all day. Plus, I’ve moved to G9s and have two of them. While it is true I would probably have stayed with full frame, and been happy with it if my back was ok, I’ve also been very happy with micro four thirds. After a day’s shoot, I’m relieved I went with my Panasonic.
I can use a gimbal as well. The costs are lower. The only problem has been others telling me MFT is a poor choice, although I’ve yet to find anyone who has worked with MFT who doesn’t appreciate the format.
The G9 is really a hybrid camera. It can produce excellent video. I illustrated a magazine I was editor of, and the graphics won an award. I produce videos for RUclips. I use my images on my websites.
MFT might not be for everyone. There is no way I would criticise those who has chosen full frame. If it suits them, fine. My Panasonic suits me.
    Thanks again, Chris.

How refreshing to hear such common sense. I also have an EM1/2 and an OM 1 and am totally satisfied with the photographs I make in both (African) wildlife and landscapes, printing 70x 100 cm prints, photo books and calendars . Never once have I thought a bigger sensor would have delivered better results. And I am tired of the herd of YT ‘experts’ reviewing all the ‘in’ cameras whilst displaying really mediocre images.

I think most people want bokeh, nice and smooth for their background.
All sensor sizes these days do fairly well in low light.
    They all produce good pictures.
You’re right about the person looking at the picture.
Up close or far away, just about all pictures will have or show about the same details.
I shoot wildlife and landscape, and each sensor size I’ve used basically shows the exact detail and resolution.
I can’t see a difference. Unless I pixel peep, which 98% of photographers don’t pixel peep, they look at pictures at a distance.
I think what most professionals and non professionals do is judge by the type of computer screen they are currently using, to judge if resolution and details and then discuss (oh man, I need a bigger sensor)
I love your videos, keep up the good work

I thought about subject, light and composition. This morning, well before sunrise, I photographed street lights and tree silhouettes in the misty fog. Noise was not a worry. whenever i've gone to local music gigs to shoot photos and videos and talked to any of the more experienced photographers, they always have a canon or nikon full-frame dslr, touting that the full-frame sensor is the only way to get good low-light photos at a dimly lit concert
however, recently i did a music festival and everyone there complimented my photos & videos (one of the event mangers even said that they were some of the best photos and videos from the festival in all its years of running), despite me using a sony a6600 aps-c camera !
just goes to show that sensor technology paired with good exposure is more important to supposed noise performance and image quality than what format size you use, especially nowadays with more and more manufacturers opting to use BSI sensors in everything, even their cheaper crop sensor bodies
whatever camera system or format you use, you can still get amazing results so as long as you work within the "limitations", aren't a vehement pixel peeper, or most importantly, comfortable with the system that you're using and understand completely how to get the photographs and videos you want :)

I've been fortunate enough to shoot with many different systems since the film days. Minolta, Pentax, Fuji, Leica, etc. Not too long ago I was trying to find a new camera to try and I ran into the dilemma of many modern cameras just being too software looking. Oversharpened, flat looking, etc...just nothing realistic of 'filmic'. I saw some camera, a Lumix GX85, on sale with a kit of 2 lenses for a great price and I loved the styling. I then saw it was a m43 format. I immediately dismissed it and thought it would look nothing more than a 2005 Nokia phone picture. I looked around some more and couldn't find anything that stood out to me. I figured okay fine, worst to worst I'll just return the camera back. Ordered it with the Lumix 20mm 1.7 ll...and never looked back. I was absolutely blown away by the photos and it was exactly the look I was looking for...high quality photos while still retaining a certain realness to them. Not overly perfect and fake looking...just right. These days, my Leica TL2 pretty much just sits in the bag and doesn't get used. The Lumix GX85 really is that good. The L-Mono mode is like the heavens opening up and the angels singing. I honestly have a difficult time telling any difference between that BW and what I've seen on Leica...actually, the only difference is that it's MUCH more affordable. I'll be sticking with micro four thirds for the foreseeable future. I might try Olympus and see how their cameras are as I'm super happy with Lumix. If there's anyone else on the fence about trying the m43 system...don't be. My only mistake was that I waited so long to try it out of my ignorance, I don't want anyone else to make that same mistake due to what they've heard about the sensor size, etc.

I couldn't disagree with a single thing you said Chris. Firstly, I loved your point about finding the camera that works for you. I honestly believe there's no such thing as a bad camera these days, it just about which one works best for you and the way you like to shoot.
As for Olympus/OM-System, the move over from Canon absolutely reinvigorated my photography and I've been a convert ever since. I had never considered m43 for the same reasons you mentioned, and it only when a friend who'd shot Nikon for over 40 years bought the Panasonic G9 and I saw the results that I started to look into the system. It's been 5 years now and I can't see myself changing anytime soon.

A great promo for micro four thirds. When I eventually moved to a digital big camera, I followed what other RUclips photographers used and how they claimed full frame is the best, yet some said crop is best for landscape. So I went for a crop, it wasn't until last year when my Nikon went for a swim, I bought an OM-1 Mk I (still marked Olympus). The purchase was mainly driven by the fact that the OM-1 was way cheaper than many full frames. All I can say is wow what a difference a different sensor makes. As for the weight reduction, that gets another wow, and its fully weather sealed with some pretty nifty computational tricks up its sleeve so to speak, so you get even more wow in your bag. I'm sure the Mk II is even better, but I am more than happy with my Mk I. I only really use a 12-100mm, plus I carry a 90mm for a bit of macro if my 12-100mm doesn't cover it.

I will be adding at least 2 new lens's in 2025 plus if I get paid enough an OM1 MKII. I use the cameras and lens commercially and have hundreds of hours of broadcast TV shot on Olympus len's.
On billboards, for 48 sheet (3048mm x 6096mm) and 96 sheets (3048mm x 12192mm) we used to print at 26 screen so the image would only need or be 52 dpi at print size.

Hi Chris, great video. I moved to M4:3 from Canon for a couple of reasons. Firstly both the camera shops that I think are impartial recommended Olympus as the best option for a two month trip to UK (from New Zealand). Weight and size were critical due to luggage limits and an aging back. It was an OM 5 mkii which I still use. It was fantastic, the body would fit in the side pocket of a pair of cargo pants/shorts and a coouple of lenses in other pockets. Or use a small shoulder bag. Even managed to have a variable ND filter and polariser. I've really bough into the system with more lenses etc. I've steered away from the OM 1 etc as I'm still trying to keep things small. And... the lenses are brilliant. Keep up great work Chris.

Back to an OM-1 (now a Mk2) after trying a couple of APS-C cameras and a Full Frame. None of the others could match its speed and features in a relatively small package. It just works.

An interesting video. I'm currently in the Fuji camp, and I don't know why, but I've become fascinated by this camera. The more I think about it the more I think it could be a Fuji killer. Maybe I'm just a rebel, but the 4/3 sensor sounds edgier. 😄 But really I think that it's just the full package. Thanks!

My choice was Pentax, it did ever last thing I wanted but…..I wanted something light for a walkabout camera while walking my dog. I saw a video from a landscape photographer who used Nikon until his went wrong. He bought and showcased an OM-5, I was hooked and bought one with a kit lens. Feature wise just wow, other than that it didn’t tick the boxes due to me not really liking the focal length of the kit 12-45 lens. On a whim I bought a 14-150 and it brought that camera alive for me and now it’s seldom out of my hand. Now I’m asking myself would I like an OM-1 do I need an OM-1 and of course I blame you for showcasing yours. 😊 to be continued….possibly.

Thanks for sticking up for MFT. After shooting full-frame for over 40 years as a newspaper photographer I tried the Leica V-Lux 114 when video and stills were required for our website. With the 114 I could shoot both still and video at the same moment. I love the resolution of a full-frame camera but my Lumix G9 is not holding me back in any way.

Speaking of print size, I tend to print to 10x13 and 20x26. Then it represents a print that is a true m43 aspect ratio on standard available paper sizes. I can set up two images of 12x16 on 16x24 paper or six images by printing on 24x36 paper and save cost on a per print basis. I just have to put in a little effort to cut the printed sheet. All true to the m43 ratio, which I quite like.

    • @sweden_ove2074
      @sweden_ove2074 Месяц назад

I would like our MFT cameras to have added true A format (aspect ratio 1.414:1, 5184x3666 pixels) and Letter format (aspect ratio 1.294:1, 5032x3888 pixels), not only 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1. Ok, letter format is very close to 4:3 (1.33:1), but I think A is better as it's in between 4:3 and 3:2. I know the camera tech could handle it. It's just crop by software.
Most people print on Letter or A size paper.

Well said. I recently looked at changing from MFT to another system and concluded that any gains were slight and the negatives were considerable i.e. cost and mass. There is a lot of misinformation here on the web but I was sold on MFT from the 12Mpixel Panasonic GF1 fitted with the 20mm f1.8. I presently shoot with a G9 and an OM-5 and can see no reason to change.

I am not a convert, but an Olympus/OM user from scratch. I shoot birds, because I like shooting birds, and my cameras do it very well. Occasionally I go to organised shoots with other photographers, and have been sneered at by the FF mob with their behemoth "long" 600mm lenses, until I show them my uncropped 1000mm equivalent reach shots..
I really couldnt care less what others think, because my system makes me happy and gives me great results that often outstrip the results of other's who have much heavier and more expensive gear.
There is that horrible expression "when you know, you know"... I adapt that to "when you know micro 4 thirds, you know".
    Nuff said.

In the end I decided that the advantages the OM1 or OM1 II are offering are not really worth the money for me as a hobby photographer. I‘ll probably rather invest it in a trip where I can use my two E-M 1 II. 😁

I also have the OM-1, and have used the Lumix G-9, the Olympus E-M1 mkII, and the Olympus E-M5. They're all great cameras, and(as said in the video) the noise performance of the OM-1 is noticeably better.
Also, I don't think I've run across the 'micro 4/3 isn't weather sealed...' criticism, that would be hilarious. The new OM cameras and IP53 rated. I think only one or two models of Leica are higher rated, and most companies don't bother with it at all.
High-Res mode: even noted m4/3 critic Tony Northrup has said many times that it's the only system in which the high-res mode seems to actually work(he, last I heard, has never gotten acceptable results on a Sony - a camera system he generally loves)
Shallow Depth of Field is pretty easy, you just have to understand how it works: subject close, background far. I have a number of wildlife shots where the background it totally demolished and they were shot, in some cases, at f/13(teleconverters, baby!!! lol)
Last, printing size: I have hanging up at work a 10mp shot(cropped from 20mp) on 17"x11" paper, about A3 size for those who use those sizes.
I think if I shot only, or even mostly, people, I might use full frame. I like my Canon R6 a lot. My issue is I shoot mostly wildlife, and the lens size/weight savings is worth more than any marginal advantage a larger sensor would give me. That's the reason I shot micro 4/3 for a while, went to Fuji APSC, Sony FF, then Canon FF only to come back to M4/3.
