I have used MANY cameras over the years (I had a camera store and studio for nearly 30 years), I switched all my full frame gear for the Olympus E-M1x when it was released and wouldn't swap it for the world. I don't specialise in any genre of photography but like to dabble in everything from bird photography, landscapes, macro and astro and this system shines in all areas. Thanks for your videos Chris. I was born and raised in Hull and have lived iin Australia for the last 55 years so I love your Humber and Spurn Point videos.
I just got one a few weeks ago, together with the amazing 45mm f1.8. I like the ergonomics, the AF speed, the IBIS, the smaller size of the MFT lenses, the speed of the interface, customizability (buttons and interface), the mechanical shutter sound, Pro Capture mode and other stuff I'm forgetting. I want to keep the system as small and light as possible, so I'll probably get a few extra f1.8 primes (probably the 17mm and the 25mm) and call it a day.
Mark II I tired when thinking of switching brands several years ago. Results got me to finally to move to m4/3 with OM-1. Never regretted a moment since change. Enjoy your videos and your work. Tfs
I have an Oly E-M1 mk1 12-40mm, 40-150mm f2.8, tripod, shutter release, glass filters, print to Flickr. I have a 25mm f1.4mm for 45mm f1.8 for minimalist photography. Couldn't be happier. I'll probably buy the Lumix Leica 8-18mm f2.8. I have an E-M10 + grip + Leica15mm f1.7 prime along with a spare battery which I stuff in jacket pocket and just do some woodland photography. 16MP going into 4K gives loads of cropping room with a bit zooming with feet thrown in pretty much never fails. The prime stopped down to F8 with the IBIS is tack sharp and the colour rendition is amazing. Liberating just grabbing camera, jump in the car, drive 20 minutes to the woods for a spot of photography around golden hour on Sunday...
Thank you! The E-M1ii remains an excellent camera in 2024, and it’s a workhorse for me. I find not only does it perform extremely well, but it feels entirely comfortable in my hand, and the customization of buttons and settings makes everything I need immediately accessible. Also, thank you for sharing your wonderful photos!
Sold my E30 in 2020 and bought the EM1 MkII - it's everything I need from a digital camera (and more). The 12-100 F/4 is my perfect companion. Great vid and fab image under the bridge.
I have a MkII - my first MFT camera and also a MkIII and OM-1. I have had the MkII since 2017 when I switched over from Nikon. Even after all this time, I still find the camera a problem free joy to use which produces exceptional results. I have used it for all sorts of photography with no problems. This year, since I had both of the two newer versions, I had it converted to IR and it is doing an amazing job at that too. Thanks, Chris, for all of your videos showing just how great MFT is.
This body was my second choice behind the E-M1X I ultimately chose and have sworn by since. I simply like the dual-orientation features, grip and batteries on mine, though many of the internal features are similar. Coupled with the Pro glass, it was a huge step up from my old 4/3 E-510, even though it was an excellent performer for its time. I love the electronic nd filters, hi-res mode, focus points/tracking and focus-stacking... The list goes on, of course, but the features in this system are truly remarkable and it's still sufficiently light that I can access some rather remote locations without feeling like I've packed an old 4x5.
Another excellent video Chris love the last photo. Have never even tried a long exposure hi res shot on my em1 mk3 which is why I love your videos I learn something new every time you upload them. 🙏🏻👍🏻
👋 hello. My daily driver is the mark 3, so very similar. I shot with the mark 1 for about a decade. The customisation and muscle memory I have for these cameras is a big plus for me. Then record button I have mapped for manual focus .. one use is for back button focus, basically. Tried back button, never got on with it. And I just got the tiny Panasonic 35-100. It’s the size of a 1.8 prime. I love zoom focal lengths, and it’s making all my other lenses really jealous because they don’t get onto the camera any more.
You put your finger on it for landscape or street photography the MFT allows you to shoot near wide open with great depth of field. Thebonus is that due to the physics of optics the MFT lenses are usually at their best only a stop or so from wide open, which means you don't ha e to wack the iso too high up.
Recently picked up a “broken” EM1m2 with 2 batteries and a charger for under $50 The only thing wrong with it was the rear lcd wasn’t working. The EVF is fine as well as the hdmi port for using it with an external monitor. I also have the OM1 and it is the better of the two but I must say that I like the ergonomics of the EM1m2 more than the OM1. The button layout and dials are just better laid out on the EM1. I will be using it mostly for night work. Also have a full spectrum converted EM5m2. As well as the lumix G9m2. I have gone all in with micro 4/3 and I can’t say how much I have enjoyed the switch from the larger heavier FF stuff. It’s actually enjoyable to go out now with 1/3 the weight and size of stuff I used to take. And I’m getting the same images if not more than I was with my Sony FF stuff. I can say from my experience I come home with more birds in flight keeps with my pany and oly gear and 200 and 300 primes than I ever brought home with my Sony a9 and 200-600. It’s just so much more maneuverable than those monster FF super zooms. I still have my Sony FF with a few fast prime portrait lenses where I do want that shallower DOF. But for everything else I’m using my m4/3 gear. Best move I have made in 40 years of hobbyist shooting.
Chris what can I say that has not ready said in your comments? Thanks for taking us on your journey with this highly loved tool. Ergos, size, features ecosystem and it looks and feels cool. Plus unlike newer iterations its has a fully metal body. I know ive said it before but i will continue to say i love this camera and your channel keep up the show buddy
I pulled mine out just yesterday. I had it tucked away for a while. My e-m1.2 that is 😂. Seriously though, I upgraded to an OM-1 mostly for live ND and admittedly I get good use from it, but it’s was a dumb excuse to upgrade. The OM-1 is nice but it hasn’t changed much in how I shoot or even the end results.
Great video, I changed my full frame, Nikon gear several years ago, for an Olympus PEN F and after Em 1 MK III, never looked back and very happy with my choice. I support your opinions, keep good work flowing….Cheers.
It ain't ever the camera itself, it's how you gel with a system that, then inspires you to create your ideas. All cameras are good these days. I'm a Pentax user and have been since the film days, some people today haven't even heard of the brand lol, I just love em. Each person to their own 👍📷 love the chanel and your camera 👍📷
Very nice, even breathtaking shots. I bought a used em1-ii last year and I love it. I’ve been getting good results using an old Canon 500mm reflex for birds. Also the Panasonic-leica 100-400 (i) is really terrific.
I got an EM-1 Mk2 also, and it's a perfect hiking camera! 12-40 pro, and a couple of primes do it for me. I'm mostly a street photographer, but I do dabblie in lanscape.
Hey Chris! Steve R from York PA here. Have been enjoying your posts and would like you to know I bought my used EM-1 Mk II largely due to your great videos. Still have my Nikons, but haven't used them much since. Been using my D850 for tabletop stills and macros, and will be trying the OM for same. So far been taking a few photos around the yard and added the 100-400mm f5-6.3 that I'm still getting used to. BTW, I couldn't help noticing the bridge structure behind you during your last great image of the bridge and was wondering if you happened to turn your Oly around with your wide angle and do your magic with it. Thanks for the great content, and look forward to your next adventure and images. Cheers!!
I don't have this camera but my mf3 adventure is with my Lumix g9 This gives superbe results for what I do. The Ibis with or even without the lens stabilisation, means I rarely use tripods ( a pain in the backside) The focus peaking with manual focusing, give me the hyperfocal ability that I sometimes require I know that all mirrorless cameras have that ability but 'the best camera is the one that you have' I also sparingly use a ' brilliant' GX7 and will never sell it Thanks, as ever for sharing your thoughts 📷 👍
The EM1 II is a great camera and I honestly believe the later flagship releases on MFT don't significantly improve on it for photography. I plumbed for the Lumix G9 based on the lenses that suited my photography mainly the PanaLeica 12-60, but the EM1 II and the G9 are neck and neck in my opinion. Also those bigger channel reviewers who a few years ago were shaming MFT users on DR now say DR doesn't matter after recent releases from Nikon and Sony had worse DR at low ISOs than both EM1 II and G9 😂. By the way I thought the hi res pic under the bridge turned out great.
Thanks mate. The hi res was my favourite of the day. The others were a bit meh in the end. My next upgrade will be to either the Mark iii or the OM-1 for the star autofocus as I want to dabble with astrophotography later in the year. The EM1 is capable but the screen gain is difficult to focus on a star.
I own the Mark III and love it but hate admit that I have never attempted either of these functions. I need to try both of them. Thanks for the inspiration.
Some amazing shots there; I recently moved to an OM-D E-M1 II - whilst sometimes I enjoyed my prior camera (E-PL7), I found myself often in situations where the camera was laughing at me (autofocus issues). The E-M1 II however has been an absolute revelation - it works with me, and I've yet to find anything like an issue - it really is an absolute joy to use!
I love my OM1 Mark II. I think that for landscape it is an unbeatable camera if we use Live ND, Live GND and HR. Because we have a tonal range gain that is impossible for other systems. Photo stacking creates a single RAW with truly incredible information, making it possible to manipulate it without degrading image quality.
I do not have the E-M1 MKII, but I have several Olympus/OM System cameras and they all have these nice features. Quite often I have to "defend" my choice for Micro FourThirds and get the standard remarks about noise and high price. I call my Olympus cameras enablers though, because with their small weight and size they enable me to take them anywhere. The build quality, weather sealing and features have proven themselves priceless over time.
Great Video! I got mine at the Birmingham camera show not long after it released.. its so robust too.. you can take it anywhere skiing, hiking, snow rain frost, ive had mine covered in mud and it still works flawless. the 12-40 is pin sharp even wide open too. The focusing is still snappy for an older camera.
I do enjoy your videos. I have the mk3. I bought back in March2024. I use it for wild life and macro. Menu is a bit of a pain to learn, some of us oldies don't have the memory we once had but, it's a fun camera though. I also use the Fuji X-T4 delightful camera. I use that for a bit of street and music festivals..
Beautiful photos! I have an EM 1 II & find it is a wonderful camera to use for many types of photography although I am not as versed as you are with all its features. There always more to learn about this camera.
If you need high resolution in High Res Mode: Stick around f5.6 with a sharp lens. F10 will give quite a lot softness from diffraction. It's totally normal that this implies no huge depth of field. Thats just physics. Whether you use 4/3s or PhaseOne medium format. It's the same.
Aaarrgghhhhh, it’s the HUMBER BRIDGE!!! 😂. Lovely review Chris and great photos/images as per usual. Got the same model and determined to get my head round it and your videos help enormously so, thank you! Quick Q, what’s your filter system please? Keep the vids coming Chris.
I have just returned from using my Nikon F5 with Delta 100, a 20mm f1.8 and a 10 stop Lee filter down on the river Hamble here in Hampshire. Problem is I now have to wait to finish the film, get it developed😁 then scan and then see the results.
Yes, mine is the E-M 1 mk iii, and I absolutely love it. I do a lot of hiking and enjoy bird photography. With a sling pack, I can take both my Zuiko 100-400 and my Zuiko 12-100, and hike all day, changing lenses on the fly should I want to shoot landscape as well as birds. Thanks for a nice video and images. What lens were you using?
I bought my E-M1 ii so I did not need to take a tripod out with me due to the IBIS being so good and for features like the weather sealing and pre-capture. I wish hi res mode worked hand held like the v iii but I may start to take a tripod out occasionally to give it a go.
I had a little play with the hi-res mode and at 1/800th shutter speed I did manage to get something sharp using the mode which surprised me so I’m going to look into that a little further.
La utilizzo felicemente dal 2018. Vorrei passare ai nuovi modelli ma in fondo mi rendo conto che ho già tutto quello che mi serve e rimando l'acquisto. Macchina fantastica.
I upgraded to the OM 1 and it’s great. But I kept my EM 1 Mark 2. It’s a great all around camera and it focuses great in low light. Some say better than the OM 1.
4:15 “never failed to let me down” ? But I thought you liked it! LoL. I know what you meant. I love my E-M1 II. I find myself grabbing my M-10 II almost as much though. My EM-1 II does everything I need it to do. The only thing lacking for me is high-speed video. But I am not really into video much at this point so I will not upgrade until it makes sense. Bird tracking is tricky but it does well. Distracting backgrounds throw CAF off sometimes and it is hard to get it back in the same burst.
After I bought a Canon R6, I thought about getting rid of my EM-1 Mark II and various lenses. I sold the expensive Pro lenses but realized the body wasn't worth much on the used market so I kept it. The Canon is a better camera overall, but recently I've been using the Oly and a reacquired 12-100 Pro f4 for walk-around shooting. Canon doesn't offer a comparable zoom lens that's waterproof. For night photos and settings when I'll want higher image quality or narrower depth of field, I use the Canon and its heavier lenses.
Thank you for the great micro 4/3 video. I am a huge fan of the system. However there is a lot of people that do not understand the micro for third system. I love it like you said with all the end camera features. I also shoot several full frame brands and the micro for third , the Olympus one is the camera I’ll reach for the most and I have a Sony A1 Nikon nine canon mark 62 and food that said I know I’m sacrificing slightly but 99% of the people 99% of the time or never notice I love this system thank you for your video
I shoot with a EM1 MIII and love the M43 system. I sell my work online and through galleries. At NO point has anyone said, "oh, I'm not buying your work because you didn't shoot it with FF" or asked what type/brand of camera the pic was shot with! Its the person behind the camera, not the camera!
Hi Chris... Just think... If you followed the crowd... just imagine how extra fab your shots would be if you moved up to FF...lol... I have the Mk3 and the trio of f2.8 pro Oly lenses... giving me 7 to 150... or 14 to 300... add in the tele and your over 400... whats not to like... there is no other system that gives you so much for such little money... its so versatile... eventually folk who like me have been and tried apsc and ff after we have been constantly told that M4/3 isn't any good...... will finally get the point... M4/3 is here to stay... and sensor size is a moot point when it comes to the "overall" performance of any camera system...Am I so glad I didn't sell it all... me personally I have had Olympus cameras for over...50 yrs and just love them... no one makes a class, quality, innovative camera like Olympus(omsys now)... ask David Bailey... and "everyone" has heard of him...even Gen Z....lol... Keep on doing your thing Chris... love the last shot... Peace and kind regards... Yoki.. (subber and thumbs up clicker...lol..)
Appreciate the laugh when you realized how long your hirez shot would take. Definitely impressed with the results! Did you have to adjust any weird artifacts out?
Great video and some lovely shots. These look remarkable cameras.....I'm just a bit wary of moving down to a small sensor. I like to crop quite a bit in certain instances and I am very wary about the low light issues tha small sensor cameras have problems with. I shoot Fuji (APSC) at the moment but I really do like the form factor of the OM system - except for that sensor!! Has anyone else taken the plunge and moved from FF or APSC? If so what are your comments regarding my worry about switching?
Thanks, I got an OMD EM10 a few years back as a prezzie, just blown away by the quality of images M4/3 delivers, I'll have to keep my eye's peeled for a used one.
I had Olympus EPL-1 as my first mirrorless camera. However, I eventually moved away from Micro Four Thirds sensor as I was facing many noise when taking astrophotography.
What a coincidence - after a lot of research .I ordered the same body from a German photo dealer this morning, he claims to thoroughly inspect, test all functions, examine the sensor and clean everything. The Germans are thorough people and sticklers for detail, so fingers crossed
Hi Chris, great video especially as i have just got my hands on an em1 mkii….can you give me the heads p on the filter kit you are using..?? Many thanks
@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto Ok, I'll do some more research. Love your channel and it's a big part of my decision to go for M4/3 and the E-m1 MII in particular. Not sure I can reach the level of your amazing photos though!
To be perfectly honest, whats not to like. Doesn't break the bank to buy, doesn't break your back lugging about and has all the whistles & bells you'd ever need.
Every great camera deserves a skilled photographer, and with this combination, you truly have both. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Peter, that’s really kind of you

Fell in love with photography again when I bought the em1 m2 by accident. Mind-blowing IS. Never letting it go again.
Best camera I've ever owned.
I would have to agree.
I love this camera. It's a Swiss Army Knife on a budget in the M43 world.
Perfomance, portability, design, price. Hard to beat this camera. No camera is perfect but this camera is most perfect.
The oly I started with. Now using om-1 mark 1. I upgraded because of wildlife and astro photography.
The astrophotographer in me wants to upgrade for that reason. It has the star focus doesn’t it?

Hanging on to mine. Its a professional camera and will always be so. If i ever get heavy into wildlife ill get OM1..
Great photos!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for sharing Steve, I'm not sure I would like to take a camera skiing though!
I have the EM1 mk 2 and the OM1, together with the 3 f2.8 zooms. The perfect kit for landscapes and wildlife.
My favorite camera. I may buy another.
Really enjoyed this video Chris, some amazing shots. Top work 👍
Aaarrgghhhhh, it’s the HUMBER BRIDGE!!! 😂. Lovely review Chris and great photos/images as per usual. Got the same model and determined to get my head round it and your videos help enormously so, thank you! Quick Q, what’s your filter system please? Keep the vids coming Chris.
I use the K&F Square Pro system.
nice video Chris, i have the EM1.3 and EM1X, EM10.2 wouldnt trade them in ever, keep up the good work.
Got my EM-1 Mk 1 for 99 EUR and i love it. Perfect to take everywhere and fits in a small bag😊
Nice work, beautiful shots😊
Bravo !! fai delle foto magnifiche, bel video ciao
Thank you/merci/grazie.
I upgraded to the OM 1 and it’s great. But I kept my EM 1 Mark 2. It’s a great all around camera and it focuses great in low light. Some say better than the OM 1.
Still learning the EM2 after best part of a year! Live composite is a genious feature, then custom modes, brilliant kit.
Great video, i think you should do a recap of your setting of all those lovely pictures you have taken.
My first Olympus m43 camera. Still have it, it performs so freaking well I can't sell it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing Hi-Res image at the end of the video. A big LIKE from me. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Singapore.
Turned out alright, the long exposure bridge!
Was pretty surprised it came out as well as it did to be honest, thank you.
Appreciate the laugh when you realized how long your hirez shot would take. Definitely impressed with the results! Did you have to adjust any weird artifacts out?
Thanks Mark. There were no artefacts at all which came as a surprise. Other than a few hot pixels.
The em-1 mk-ii is indeed a fine camera
Ive wanted the mkIi for awhile now....maybe mkiii
I have the OM-1, but if my budget had been the limiting factor, I am sure that a EM-1 mk.ii would have been just as good for 90% of the photos I take.
The OM-1 is my 2025 upgrade path I think.
Great video. What lens were you using?
That was with the 12-40 f2.8 Pro lens.
Thanks, I got an OMD EM10 a few years back as a prezzie, just blown away by the quality of images M4/3 delivers, I'll have to keep my eye's peeled for a used one.
The EM10 Mark ii was my first dabble with micro four thirds and kind of set the lightbulb off for me. Was a brilliant little camera.
Good thing you got one, because it seems Taylor Swift got one as well which means now it’s going to be harder to get one used for a bargain.
If you are not a pro then the OM-5 + the Olympus 12-45mm f/4 Pro - 6.5 stops of internal stabilization.
Hi Chris, great video especially as i have just got my hands on an em1 mkii….can you give me the heads p on the filter kit you are using..?? Many thanks
Hello there! I use the K&F Square Filter Pro system.
@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto cheers Chris much appreciated..👍
What lens or lenses were used in the video
That's not all over the uk you missed Wales out😂
Wales is next year….
And the south coast... where I'm from.
I’m thinking of buying one of these to convert to infared: does it have focus peaking please.
I've had my eye on this camera for ages. How is it for video, specifically indoor cooking videos?
230Mbps Cine 4K, it looks glorious for video.
@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto Great, thanks Chris! Is there a cheapish lens you would recommend for close-up cooking videos?
It depends how close you want to get. The 60mm macro lens from Olympus is great.
@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto Ok, I'll do some more research. Love your channel and it's a big part of my decision to go for M4/3 and the E-m1 MII in particular. Not sure I can reach the level of your amazing photos though!
The EM1.2 and EM1.3 are better than OMD's newest.
To be perfectly honest, whats not to like. Doesn't break the bank to buy, doesn't break your back lugging about and has all the whistles & bells you'd ever need.
