    I just picked this up for my Fujifilm system and couldn't be happier. It's my first manual focus lens and is so much fun to use and produces amazing images... I ordered the 35 1.4 and waiting on delivery.

      @@bebopganymede For $98 you can't beat it. It's very sharp (the copy I had). I have since sold all of my Fuji gear for Leica Rangefinders and purchased the TTArtisan 50mm M mount version and it's very good also, but very heavy at 14oz and thats not what I was after. I wanted to keep the kit small and sold it for a Zeiss 50mm f2 Planar.

    Thanks so much for a reasoned and even handed review. I was in a bit of a quandary whether to spend the money on this lens or just stick to my nearly free 50mm f1.8 Zuiko. Your review helped me to decide to stick with the Olympus lens.

    Thanks for being the first reviewer to point out the ugly, gear shaped bokeh this lens produces. Bought one and tried it for a week or so, but the awful gear shaped bokeh made it a huge fail for me.

    Is this TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2 a no brainer for m43 shooter looking for an affordable portrait or fast short telephoto lens? Or do you have any other suggestions instead?

    what You think?
    TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2 or Canon FD 50mm f/1.4?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 года назад +2

      TTArtisan would be brand new so don't have the risk of buying a bad copy of the FD as it's quite an old lens and it's a bit smaller too. But the build quality of the Canon is a bit better from memory.

      Hi Yat, oh i'm not aware Zhongyi has a 50mm f/1.1? Are you talking about their 0.95 full frame lens? or the Kamlan 50 1.1?

      @TheRealRichardWong  3 года назад +1

      No probs!! Unfortunately I haven't try the Kamlan myself. But looking at the specs and some of the reviews, the Kamlan seems to have a bit more character, while the TTartisan renders smoother image. The Kamlan also is a bit more expensive and bigger as well. If i managed to get hold of a copy I'll do some comparison with the TTArtisan

  • @andreasrochow5170

    Thank you for this review. Unfortunately the focal length of 50 mm with MFT sensor format is not a good choice for poeple photography. It's a tele lens, that's hard to focus manually. I'm waiting for a similar fast lens with a focal length under 20 mm.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 года назад +6

      Hi Andreas, i would disagree and say the 100mm equivalent focal length is traditionally popular for portrait. A lot of protrait lenses are 85/105/135mm focal length. For example, one of the famous protrait photo "Afghan Girl" was shot on the Nikkor 105mm 2.5 AIS lens which is virtually equivalent to this TTArtisan lens

    • @costinio3983

      I use 50mm on MFT precisely for portraits. It's a perfect focal length for headshots, head and shoulders and half body.

      @@costinio3983 Agreed. In fact, I find that longer FL's are great for portrait on M43. i.e. I have used my 40-150 at 150mm for headshots and got nice results.

      @@TheRealRichardWong ok, I was think your impression from a wide open sharpness, vignetteing, chromatic aberrations and flare point of view. I own the Nikon AIS and wondering if I wouldn't notice any difference or do you remember your Nikon being better or worse in one of those areas.
      I just looked and the specs are almost identical between this and the Nikon AIS, interesting. So just price is different. So being cheaper maybe one to throw in the bag without care as its at the cost of a good filter.
      Hope that makes sense.

    Thank you for the review. I just got the lens and I get a “lens not connected correctly” when I attach it to my gh5s. Any ideas? The instructions say you’re supposed to tell it you don’t have a lens attached (under the first wrench menu) but it doesn’t seem to be there

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  2 года назад

      From memory, the GH5s does NOT have the "shoot without lens" option in the setting like the older Panasonic camera, it is enabled all the time so you should be able to take a photo even without any lens attached. See if you can do that?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 года назад +5

      I would argue it depends. Some people really care about the photo is sharp and nice so a lens like this is not really suitable for them. But some people just want the shallow DOF or the better low light performance and not too worry about the sharpness as long as it's useable.

    • @tappersreviews4677
      @tappersreviews4677 3 года назад

      Actually there is a long tradition of using softer lenses for portraiture, especially for women. Classic Hollywood portraits are a good example. If you are getting tack sharp details of every pore and line in someone's face, you should ask why you are capturing that level of detail. It may, or may not, be appropriate for the portrait or the subject. For nature and scientific photography, sure, you want as much detail as possible to reveal what we cannot easily see with our own eyes. But for portraits, sometimes a lens like this one could be great. I have not shot with it, so can't say for sure what results would be possible, but I might consider one precisely for certain photos i.e. softer headshots.
