Dear Brett - You we’re the first teacher I found that checked all the boxes. I’ve learned much from you and feel fortunate to have you as a resource. Sometimes I get stuck or step into a hole where listening to myself is not inspiring. I can always count on you to provide a way out. Thank you, I appreciate what you do.
Oh man that is awesome to hear Robert! Thanks so much! Thanks for watching!
I like Robbie's playing a lot. He really is about teaching guitarists to be musicians.
For sure!
Robbie's Phrasing and target note selection makes guitar soloing so ear appealing. Love the way the tricks are broken down. Much like watch polished football commentators breaking down a play so the average layman understand what's going on, which would have been impossible without their level of expertise. So fun and surprising.
Agreed! Glad you liked the lesson! Robbie is fantastic!
Thank you so much. Targeting the Money Tones makes all the difference. Scales, arpeggios etc are all fine...but it's the special stand-out tones that will set the listeners ear on fire...so glad you like the approach.
I’ve watched Brett for years and have literally watched him improve slowly but surely and he’s a great player himself. Put the work in snd it shows. Humble guy too and a pleasure to listen!
Thanks Charles! Glad you think so!
Judging from the caliber of guests who Brett has on his channel, it's no secret how inspiring of a teacher and player he is.
Yea, he's awesome.
I remember seeing one of Robbie Calvo's lessons a while back (maybe a year or so) and it's amazing how good he was and is at communicating an idea and illustrating it in a way that's immediately applicable. His playing is super smooth and he's a great communicator to boot.
Really nice lesson!
Total agree Andre!
Thank you Andre, I'm so glad you resonate with my approach to teaching.
Brett!!! Wow!!! I have watched many of your vids over the years, and this is the best I’ve EVER seen you play. So effortless, smooth and flowing. You killed it!! 👍👍👍
Haha thanks Dirk! Glad you liked it!
My reaction exactly! That was fucking sweet!
One of the best videos I’ve ever watched on You Tube. Thanks guys. Amazing stuff !!! Can’t wait to dig in.
Wow, Rick, that is quite the compliment...thank you so much...more great lessons to come.
That's awesome to hear! Glad you liked it!
Robbie's an excellent teacher and thank you Brett for hosting him. You've got a really nice channel here.
Thank you sir! Glad you liked it! Totally agree Robbie is a fantastic instructor.
Thank you so much!
Great stuff as always from Robbie. Such an effortless, melodic player and a great tone.
Thanks Alan! Glad you liked the video!
Hi Alan, that's very kind, i hope there are some inspirational moments in there for you.
@@robbiecalvoguitar There sure are Robbie, I've been playing along with you this afternoon.
Thanks for this Brett. You are great all by yourself but every time that you bring guests on, they are always next-level people and musicians.
Thank ya! Glad you like the vids and guests!
Thank you!
@@robbiecalvoguitar
I just got finished watching an hour long clinic that you hosted. I've been playing for 39 years and gigging for the last 27 years consistently.
Despite that, I am learning some valuable ideas from you that I plan on applying to my playing.
Cheers Bret. Thanks for the new video. That's my Friday night sorted anyway. Love from Ireland.
Awesome Patrick! Thanks for tuning in!
Once again Brett............along with you of course.........I can't decide if our great friend Robbie Calvo is the classiest and kindest person on Earth or its greatest guitar instructor............or..........BOTH!! Robbie & Brett...........as great as it gets!! Jim C.
Haha thanks Jim! Honored for the comparison! Robbie is an amazing instructor!
Hi Jim, Thank you for a massive compliment and for always following my works. You are a true advocate and gracious human being ... we need more peeps like you in the world.
Great, practical lesson with some great playing to listen to along the way!
Thanks Robert! Glad you liked it!
Thank you Robert.
It drives me insane that I can see the scales you both play and make it look like playing guitar is stroll in the park, whereas when I try I feel like I’m swimming through soup. Doh!!
Keep at it day by day and practice these small ideas and motifs we are talking about and you'll start to see the and hear the progress.
I've found that skipping notes in scales helps a lot. It's almost like I'm playing parts of chords when soloing. I begin with minor pentatonic and move a half step down where I feel it fits, and suddenly I've expanded the scale. E.g. A minor pentatonic, B string from fret 8 down to fret 7. And I choose to land on that note, I play different arpeggios or parts of scales or parts of chords and land on it the whole time. (EDIT: Turns out it's the flat 7 note.)
It's difficult to explain it, but that's it. It just suddenly happened, I started playing like that instead of just playing in scales. It helps that I've played a lot of scales, I know the shapes of all the modes and how they're connected, and recently I just moved on from scaling to playing melodies that I've never played before. Just listen to what you do. And get inspired by Robbie Calvo, Brett Papa, and other teachers and guitarists.
Worthy!
Thanks!
Another great video, I think I'm deeply into this! Thanks man!
Awesome Dennis! Glad you liked it!
Thank you Dennis, glad you liked the video.
Awesome… kudos to you & Robbie!
Thank you!
Thanks!
Once again Brett is presenting us another great teacher 👍
Thank you for checking the lesson out...more great concepts to come.
Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks for the lesson on that type of paradis city from the guns !
I learned so much more when you two play together. Awesome video!!
Thank you Michael, It's a great format for a Q and A, plus the jams always add that extra touch.
Holy #%^&& that sounds phenomenal. Robbie the Money tone tag line was not a lie you absolutely blistered that from the first note.Thatz how you play it right there.Brettnot to be outdone here you just really lit it up with your take on the riff.I was cheering man .You have really been using your time in Nashville wisely.
Haha thanks! Robbie is always on so I got to do something to keep up lol!
Thank you so much. Check out the course videos for more specific money tone options.
This is great thank you guys just what I was looking for
Thank you for watching...hope the concepts give you new ideas.
Awesome!
This seriously got me back on the log ! I'm not joking. Great vid. Great approach. Easily understood. Tones are fantastic as well as the playing. You both did a great job !
Thanks so much!
Thank you, much appreciated.
Hell yeah Brett! Nice playing
Thanks!
Good stuff man! Thanks!
Sure thing!
Hey Brett, I'm a bit late to the party but these lessons with Robbie have unblocked 30 years of hacking away in pentatonic, I can understand exactly (well almost) what you two are doing and it all makes such sense, great teaching from the pair of you. You behave like a student, as I suppose we all are, then fly off into your own Killer licks. You work so well together and I feel I have broken through another learning blockage into a whole new world. I rarely comment on youtube but just wanted to thank you both so much.
That's amazing to hear! Glad the video helped!
Oooooh, this one is gonna be goooood!
Haha glad you think so!
Thanks Brett. Robbie is such a Smoooth Operator! His fingers just seem to glide around the fretboard! Soulful, melodic, so tasty! Thank you Robbie for sharing! Peace
You are welcome Dave! Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Dave, wow, what a great compliment. Smooth and in the groove...I'll take it!
Really awesome, everything great, really like the 'pentatonic' from Dom 7 arpeggios idea. Thank you
Thanks Russ, adding the 9th to any arpeggio will give you two-notes per string shapes...it's the way to go.
Great lesson! Thanks!
Sure thing!
Arigato Brett. It's always great when Robbie's on and I would add that as a listener and a player I'm always more interested in what a player has to "say" than how he says it. I guess the path to that with some folks is with shapes but I think we should strive for a somewhat looser approach to melody
Hi JerryThank you fr the compliment and comment. I agree, we need to learn the shapes and then just flow through them like water. I guess as educators we have to find all common denominators and a visual cue to get an idea across for the watcher.
@@robbiecalvoguitar Robbie you do a great job of that. Ideally theory exists only to explain to someone else what you played. If you're thinking about I would think you'd get brain lock
Robbie’s note choices always amaze me. He goes where i never expected with great taste and chops. Tone is incredible, too.
Thank you so much!
It surprises me that Brett doesn't have a million subscribers. The content he puts out is always so educational, and entertaining at the same time.
Thanks! Maybe one day haha!
Awesome warm tone on this one 👏
Yep Robbie always gets great tones.
You make it clear ne simple ! Thank u🇫🇷👍🏼🍒
You are welcome!
Thank you, that's always our goal.
OMG I love that Yamaha Revstar with filtertons! Didn't even know that existed. Great video as usual Brett! You rock brah, that was a killer solo at the intro!
Thanks! It is a fantastic guitar!
Love it great !
Thanks Darren!
Thank you so much!
Thanks again Brett papa
Sure thing!
Wonderful interaction, you guys!
Man oh man Robbie Calvo your licks were so dang tasty i swear i tasted barbecue sauce and summer. Awesome stuff Brett Papa you continue to impress
Thats very Kind Rick, thank you!
Thank ya!
Man, you guys kick total ass!
Thanks!
Killed in the intro Brett
Thanks Jeremy!
Great playing guys! I love that Revstar, I have a 320 and it's my favorite inexpensive guitar that I have ever owned.
Thanks! Yeah those guitars are amazing!
Thank you, The Revstar range are completely underrated...probably the best guitar for the price on the market today!
@@robbiecalvoguitar I think you're right! Have you seen the RUclips about how they designed them? I have worked in the Architecture field all my life in design, I think they're some of the best looking guitars to come out in a long time. I'm a visual person and some guitars even if I like everything else about them but the looks I won't buy them!
This is awesome
Thanks for stopping by Charlie!
Thank you Charlie.
Remember the Canadian band Helix? That is Ricky's (Trailer Park Boys) band.
That was damn good and quite enlightening for me. Thank you!
Thanks for checking it out!
Brett I have always love your lessons. I work in Nashville and would love to see you play live if you play anywhere near here.
Thanks Williams! Guthrie Trapp and I do an event called Nashville Guitar night every few weeks! I might jump in there and play soon. For now its just back to editing!
Bought…love this guys teaching as with Brett’s… some great teachers out there but some more than others 😉
Thanks so much for the support!
Thank you for investing in the course...I hope you get a lot out of it.
that sounds great
Thanks for checking it out!
happy holiday's papa!!
Thanks! You too!
Now to develop patience on the gig - conquering adrenaline is one of my challenges.
For sure! That is a tough one!
Robbie sounds like Bowie. Love his tasteful playing….. tone as well… sounds like a bit of compression in there somewhere. Great to see one of us Brits making it across the pond. Mustard video!
Robbie passes the denim check ☑
The Canadian Tuxedo!
Welcome back to the mainland Robbie, dang, you brothers have been wood sheddin. Sounding great guys. How about a shot of the pedalboard, effects, etc. ? Great video. Thanks.
Robbie is always just playing the Line 6 Helix which is just like the one we are giving away. I am playing the Divided by 13 JRT9/15 with a XTS Tonic Distortion pedal as a boost of sorts.
@@BrettPapa Thanks for the reply. I hope you are keeping the Nashville cats in line. According to The Lovin Spoonful, there was 1352 guitar pickers in Nashville, and that song was released way back in 1966. LORD only knows what the astronomical number of pickers is today. Like Ford said, the bagger at the grocery store ask, paper or plastic or do you want to melt your face off with my guitar playing. LOL. I am happy for you that you got to follow your dream and move to Nashville. GOD bless you and your family. Play on Jimi !!!
Thank you. Always great to be back in Nashville and jamming with Brett.
Good lesson...
Glad you liked it Norman!
Thank you Norman
Just goes to show you tone and cutting through a mix is available to digital amps as strong as it is to tube amps- Robbies tone here is deep and full and cuts through the "mix" far better then Bretts is- but Robbie's using the Helix and Brett is using the Divided by 13 "Robbie is always just playing the Line 6 Helix which is just like the one we are giving away. I am playing the Divided by 13 JRT9/15 with a XTS Tonic Distortion pedal as a boost of sorts."
Anything can work great if properly mixed. Robbie's tone and level are what's important in this video so we purposefully mixed him more towards the front. Helix is an incredible tool both live and in the studio as well.
Thank you for the compliments on tone. I've been a fan of Helix for over 5 years and can't see myself ever going back to real amps. Much as I love them. To have a stereo rig, effects and all the amps, cabs ertc I'll ever need in one board just makes sense to me. I'm getting some of the best tones I've ever had. Enter to win the Helix and Helix native packages...you might get lucky!
thats why nashville has the best muscians. Hes a beast.
Take me down to the Para…….great lesson!
Thanks Brett!
Robbies playing is so damn smooth
For sure!
I had to spray my computer down to stop the smoking after the intro you guys played. Nicely done.
Haha! That is a good one!
Haha!, thank you!
paradise city country style, got it.
Pretty much lol!
I’m an idiot and this was such a simple and helpful video! Thanks for this one!
Sure thing!
ahhhhhh shit yeahhhhh Papa, that intro lead was DOPE!
Glad you liked it John!
Nice to see Robbie rocking out on a revstar, such an underated sweet guitar. Amazing how Yamaha electric guitars aren't used enough, compared to other brands, I wonder why?
Yep those are killer guitars!
W0W!
Haha thanks!
Hi Rob it's Steve boreham
Love your lessons, the country thing reminds my of your younger playing.love to talk.
Blessxx
Hey Stephen make sure to let him know on his channel!
@@BrettPapa thanks will do
Ah, YES! MODALITY!!! 👍🎸✌️😎
Haha!
Every chord progression you'll ever play over is modal ... so it's well worth understanding... i hope this video was fun and insightful.
Uncle Papa was ripping there in the solo.
Why thank ya Jo!
Yes he was!
Absolutely amazing you two! This has been a great guitar lesson for me personally. Keep it up Brett!
Thanks Daniel! Glad you got something from the lesson! Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks Daniel, that means a lot to me, more great lessons to come.
Well the grey guitar
Wow
Haha thanks!
CHEERS PAPA
Cheers!
What are those pickups in the LP/ES style guitar on the left?
Holy cow. Looks like I’ve discovered the post doctoral program in how to play at Papa U.
Haha! Robbie is fantastic!
For me modes are easy to understand, but difficult to execute. For example, in the key of C Major, for the 1 chord you can play Ionian, for the 2 chord Dorian, for the 3 chord Phrygian, etc...because it's what the ear expects to hear...although no one plays a different mode for every chord change, but in theory it's perfectly fine. Hope that helps someone.
Thank you for the comment and approach. I'd go a step further and say that when you understand the tonal center, you can negate following the chord with it's modality. Simply target the tonal center chord... and you're golden! We discuss this briefly in this video. Give that a shot.
@@robbiecalvoguitar Hi Robbie! Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment, I feel privileged, man! I think I'm a slow learner, but I have heard that before (attacking the tonal center), but sometimes I need to hear something a hundred times before it sinks in. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Of course they don’t, they are all the same notes 😂
NGL I want that guys denim jacket
Hey Brett, is this backing track in Robbie’s course?
Yes! And a bunch more!
Robbie’s great but Brett’s solo at the beginning just ripped!
Haha thanks!
I’d say they both ripped it up! Reminds me of Hotel California with Felder and Walsh’s solos. Btw is Robbie using just the Helix for tone? What’s he going through as far as a cab or speaker?
Paradise city- Slash
Sweet, standard tuning ?
Yes
Working everyday from 9_5 doing whatever I got just to survive, ohhhh ohhhh then the shit flys, you know what it's like when shit hits fan, you've always been a travelen man ,

This is why I play guitar... this what I try and reach
Yep Robbie is amazing!
@@BrettPapa you're right but you also give me inspiration as well... sometimes it's not to do with being shown or taught but watching and learning and taking away from it
Take me down to the paradise city
Haha! Such a fun progression to jam over.
Oh man.! I just cannot think of the name of that song they were jammin to in the intro..?!?! Help me out..?
“Paradise City”..?
Lol! It's a popular progression that they definitely wrote a killer song to.
Don’t worry about breaking out of the pentatonic, seems with youtube lessons the future issue is going to be ‘how do I break out of the key of A. cause that’s all they teach
The key of A is a good teaching tool because its centrally located on the fretboard and is also a familiar key for most people.
The chord progression in this video is actually in the key of D. it's an A Mixolydian progression. I was using A Minor, A Major Pentatonics, A Mixolydian (D Major Scale ) A Dorian (G Major Scale). for my lines. I agree with Brett. we often teach in this guitar friendly space as t's immediately relatable to most guitar players. Everything we show here is instantly moveable to other keys.
I've watched a lot of your videos Brett but this one actually made me realise how good a player you are. Good to see Robbie here
Please ask Robbie if his amp goes to 11?
It does lol!
11, and sometimes 12 if the wind is at my sails...:-)

I just dont get it.....this guy can play but its all pretty ordinary..... I like Bretts playing more than Robbies
