OK, definitely 'Video Of The Year 2019' in my worthless opinion (and I have no doubt forgotten some). Great to see Brett playing more in this one; many of us became Brett's disciples because we relate to his style so its great to hear how he translates these great players' stuff. Thanks guys.
I would love to see what Brett played during the wrong camera choice at 51:55. Please?
Wow Thanks! Ill take it haha! Glad to hear that you liked it. Thanks for checking out the vids!

Sure thing! Thanks for checking it out!
I really appreciate the way you guys broke this down to what I would consider a "working man's theory" lol. So many of us know that 1st pattern and this really helps us hear the tones and target them. Brilliant!
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much Bob, many more cool videos to come...
Fantastic video, a great Christmas present Guys many thanks!
Thank you Tim
Funny, I just figured out that moving up a whole step trick last week playing to a Quist jam track. Going from minor on the 1 to major pentatonic on the 4. In a 1,4,5 you can move up another whole step for the 5. So it would be 1 minor, 4 and 5 major pentatonic. Never changing shape. Of course you already knew that! I always enjoy the Robbie Calvo vids.
Thanks Guys .This lesson has opened up my playing .Nice vibrato as well .Wayne
You are welcome!
Thank you for checking it out!
Thank you Keith and Robbie. I have picked so much up from you and your work. I appreciate you bringing Robbie into your studio and exposing the masses to his work and style. It is my belief that Robbie is among the top tier of instructors in the world. I have taken most if not all of his Truefire lessons for the last 8 years. Now, no matter how cold or unrehearsed I am, I now have an arsenal of Calvo inspired licks that I can tap into that has converted me into an almost semi-pro player. I am so thankful to that guy!
Thanks for checking it out! We got a ton of killer courses and content coming down the pike! Stay tuned!

I loved this video Brett! I sadly hadn't heard about Robbie before but really dug his attitude and style to playing. His Revstar looks & sounds amazing too! You were tearing it up in your solos too, sounded really great.
I had actually just learned about this pentatonic in the 3 keys trick not too long ago from a Rick Beato video. It's a really interesting idea and definitely helps breaking out of the box easier.
Happy holidays!

Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Hey guys great video as usual, I am wodering something though, are you using a compressor? This tone is lovely. Cheers from France!
Vincent Konieczny Hi Vincent, I’m using the Origin Effects Cali 76 compressor...
I knew you could play leads really well, but those were some really awesome lines you played in the beginning, well done. ^-^
Also, thousands of people would fail the sus2 versus 9 chord naming test. In fact, that's the reason I would fail it too because I've been learning from some of those same people for decades now.
Another great lesson, always glad to see you uploading more. And a big thank you to Robbie, an awesome teacher and player.
Thanks! Glad you thought so. More stuff coming soon!!
Brett is a monster player and a really great interview sidekick...always have fun and manage to play some cool ideas too!
I have this revstar in the same colour (Japanese Vintage denim), it’s an awesome guitar for the money.
Yep for sure!
These sessions are so great and you make them really interesting with your simple yet detailed presentation. What software is Robbie using and how is the tablet connected. Please keep these sessions coming.
Thank you Emann, I use Logic to record my tracks. The I-Pad is running into Line 6 Helix loop input so that I can fade the tracks out with the controller.
@@robbiecalvoguitar Many thanks to reply to my message...great to have a response directly from you. Would you consider making a video on how to make backing tracks with simple chords and strum patterns against which one can exercise improvisation please?
Thanks for checking them out!
Phenomenal guitarist
Yep Robbie is awesome!
Hi Brett. Just discovered this video. Very helpful! Thanks so much. Quick question: I think you were correct at 12:01 that Robbie was playing a note in the A Dorian mode, no? Both the B he played and the F# you played are in that mode/scale, no?
Awesome
Thanks!
Oooooohhhhaaaahhhh,,,,,! This is the tastiest I ve seen and heard forever. Useable is a terrible understatement. Could you guys tell what Robbies signal chain looks like? Sounds soo un belivably good, subtle and balanced
He has a compressor going into his Line 6 Helix. His patches are for sale on his website!
@@BrettPapa ok, thx!
Hi Magnus, my signal chain is Yamaha Revstar 502TFM running into an Origin Effects Cali 76 and then Line 6 Helix.
@@robbiecalvoguitar Thx Robbie! You sound absolutely heavenly, and the soundstage you create is so haunting and inspiring I got totally hypnotized and eager to learn to build music like that. The very satisfying thing is that the questions that rose in my mind when listening were exactly what you chose to describe in detail! BR Magnus
Where were you Papa ??? Great to see you again ...Do you have a band ? Kind regards from France 🤘🎸
Been recording a bunch of products. Coming soon! Thanks for checking out the vids! No band at the moment maybe sometime in the near future.
Great lesson guys. Pity there wasn't a camera on your guitar, Brett. That was a ripping riff at 52:30.
Haha, mad bad! Sorry!
mind blown have to run home and work out these 3 positions on the progression
Awesome! Have fun!
Thank you Ross...would love to hear your feedback after you try it for yourself...
fast
Thank you I get the 3 to 1 phrase ratios as that helps me from blowing my roll to fast, am going to work on the other two positions the B min and the E min some more all the best r

What exact model is that Yamaha Robbie is playing? love it, want one!
Hi Tony, Thank you for your message. The Yamaha Revstar I'm playing is the RS502TFM VJD (Vintage Japanese Denim)...it's solid mahogany with a flame maple top...P90 Pickups...
Hey Brett! You got to have Robbie once a mount at least!
More coming soon!
Great stuff. Is this covered in the Masters Of Modes Course by Robbie? Or is this a new course coming from Brett?
Hi Anthony, Master Of Modes covers the Major Scale approach to Modal soloing ...the new course we filmed will feature all of the approaches for Pentatonic soloing...coming soon!
Thanks Robbie. In your opinion, would it be better to start with the new Pentatonic approach course, or the Master Of Modes course?
@@anthonyc6386 Either one...if you know both scale types both will have a completely different effect. I think it's worth knowing both.
WOW! Papa its your best video.Where and what track is that..I want it now..I want to learn that Dorian style:>) By the way are you at NAAM (LA) coming up here?
Thanks! There is a link to the track in the description box below. Yes Ill be at NAMM this year. Robbie too!

What's d b. Track name ?? Pls is any know, thx
Is this style of music considered progressive jazz
It’s very spacey and cool
I love it
Has a progressive jazz rock feel with a sprinkling of blues
I dig it
Its kind of jazz rock. Very smooth whatever it is! Robbie has this thing down.
Hi Jeremy, it's a real mix of styles, glad you like it. The tracks in the course all have that cool laid back feel...easy to jam over.
Robbie makes that Yamaha sound like a million bucks!
For sure!
Thank you Doug...or maybe the yamaha Revstar makes me sound better?!!!...It's such a killer guitar and line of electrics. Have you seen my Revstar 720b...videos on my youtube channel
I have not but I will check them out soon as I get time. Happy Holidays.
Light bulb moments..Great video.
Robbie is great for those!
Yall remind me of spinal tap, talking about the chords “ yea but this one goes to eleven 😎
huh?
@Darrell Robinson : If that analogy is simply incorrect, then I think it's an exclamation on how much they don't get it. But that's just a guess on my part of course.
@Stephen Oz Oswald : The numbers they refer to come from the scale the chord is built from. Let me try explaining...
Let's take C Major as a starting point because it's simpler (no flats and shorps).
The C Major scale is C, D, E, F, G, A, and B.
Music theory just substitutes numbers in place of letters to explain things across different keys/scales.
So C, D, E, F, G, A, B, is *also* 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
So a C Major chord is *both* C, E and G, or 1, 3, and 5 (root, third and fifth).
When you add the 7 to make it a C Major 7 chord, you have 1, 3, 5, and now a 7 (C, E, G, and B).
When they are talking about a sus2 chord and an add 9 chord, they are adding the D note (the 2nd note in the key/scale).
Music theory at it's most basic is really as simple as: A B C D E F G and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (8 being the root or 1 repeated) and the only other notes are the 9th, 11th, and 13th. But learn the other stuff and those become easy to understand.
Hope that helps. ^-^
Aylbdr Madison good explanation indeed 🎸
So basically it’s like...4th and 5th chord of Gmaj and Am in the background..and playing G major scale on it..n it becomes A Dorian mode...I think it’s hardest mode to figure out...I never understand this sound..
I hope this video clarified some of the Dorian characteristics and made sense using Pentatonics to improvise.
Yes sir exactly.....n the tricks u discovered r awesome...thanks
Robbie has David Bowie’s voice...Am I the only one who noticed this ?
Haha!
Belo Blues David Bowie, Elvis and I also share a birthday...January 8th
Both Londoners
Another inversion, CMaj7 with drone open A string = Am9 (example: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed)
I love this lesson, the sound of it, but when you really can't see the fingers and you start calling the chords by, what to most people would be unusual names, It would have helped by a 100% margin to have the chords shown on the screen, if only drawn crudely on a whiteboard then drug up to show us. ( or even drawn with a Sharpie on a single piece of paper and held it up for a few seconds (then we could freeze the video to figure it out). I got lost in the description of the chords, and I know a lot of chords, but not the ones you named. For that reason alone I give this video an 8. Thanx 4 the jam track, but damn, I wish I knew what chords shapes were being used. I also would have been nice to actually name each pentatonic you were shifting to as you were doing so. You were having a guitar intellectual conversation with another very adept guitar player, but not with ME, and others like me, who needed more. You were telling Brett what you were were doing, but I would have hoped that you wanted others besides Brett to know what you were doing.
Is that a Yamaha?
Yes
😘😘
Right back at ya!
This one too haha!
All Robbie vids are great! He is the man!
@@BrettPapa Although I try to spend less time on youtube I subscribed, good conversation and your solos fire too man.
"You don't have to step outside the box if you move the box."
Haha good point!
I took lessons for a year from a guy who was technically amazing and totally boring. Everything sounded the same. I remember BB King hearing a guy shred and he asked why is he playing so many notes, doesn’t he know which ones to use?
Lol that is a good one!
TOO MANY Preview ADS ON RUclips!
I really want to see your Videos Papastache, but annoyingly, RUclips have so many useless crap ads that we viewers Cannot Avoid!
What is wrong with RUclips...!
use Adblock ! ;)
They gotta make that money lol!
Robbie has such a sliky sound, .....the guitar- i am sure's fine- but the tone is in the fingers, picking , pressure on strings and " nuances"-----dynamics---.
Hard to master.....only the previleged are able to get it right.
He works at it a lot!!!!!!
Pedro, you are so kind...thank you so much...
I know Papa, we all who love the instrument have to commit some time and effort, but the difference is in the results.....lol.
I must confess that I admire your work and the desire to bring o lot of this talented artists out of the "penumbra" , meaning exposing their talent to the followers and audience you've gathered .....It's almost like a public service .
Thank you and Robbie....he's a very humble and down to Earth gentleman.
PS....: I would recomend the Revstar along with his signature pedal the Soul Driver.
brett its just too much unnecessary yeah and okay's while robbie is talking and that totally wrecked my focus n probably rob's context.. bkz 16:53
Okay lol! Sorry man its just the way I roll.
