- Well, it seems a whole lotta people dug the nasty blues licks lesson. If you haven’t seen it check it out here: • My Favorite Nasty Blue...
I got lots of questions and comments on it so I thought I would extrapolate on the NBL concept a bit. In part 2 I added some more licks but I also show you how to get the tone, feel, and thinking behind the Nasty Blues Licks creation.
Topics covered in todays lesson are bending, vibrato, muting, dynamics, raking, pinch harmonics, how to get a wicked blues rock tone, sliding, changing positions, chromatic runs, mixing major and minor, and much much more!
You guys and gals out there all rock! Thanks for the comments and the support! You make all of this possible.

Breathtaking feel and tone... and energy!! Great video mister Brett ! Thank you so much!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Just got back from a year guitar hiatus, and yet again it’s the papa master who gives me those light bulb moments both from this video and one about seeing chords in the scale and hitting chord tones, that Guthrie trap vid taught me loads, honestly your the only RUclips guitarist I can learn from lol, keep up the good work.
Thanks Thomas! Glad to have ya back! Thanks for watching!
Brett your teaching is superb and your tone, sublime! Thank you once again for these awesome insights.
Sure thing Steve! Thanks for the kind words!
Yeah…you can explain very well and you always get the best sound out of it 👍🔝
Thank ya sir!
Great lesson! Thanks for talking tone, mix, clean vs dirty. It’s important to remember to be flexible with tone and eq.
Thanks!
Great lesson, so much packed into this….gonna listen to it again!

@@BrettPapa Which Neal Schon album specifically were you referring to Papa ? 🤔
Nice one Brett, Youve got it all going on.
Thanks so much!
Woo hoo! New video! Nasty Blues Licks 😁
Wooohoooo!
Hello from Sweden 🇸🇪 This was a great lesson! Just what I needed. Thanks Brett🎸🎸
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
These help me a lot. Thanks man
Sure thing Mike!
Great point about the light touch needed in the left hand. User Error is spot on.
Makes a big difference! I learned that one late in life.
Brett I'm still working with the last video u did on nasty licks... awesome man..very grateful for the work you put in on these..it's more than entertainment for the nerds like man...I appreciate you very much..thanks for doing more of this!🤘🤪🎸🎶☮️🔥
Thanks Eric! Glad to hear the videos help you out! Thanks for tuning in!
@@BrettPapa unbelievable skills man..you're welcome bro...love this kind of content and it's not easy to do what you do...true pro
Great video Brett! I learned a lot.
Awesome to hear Ryan! Thanks for tuning in.
Lots of very useful stuff.. great lesson pop
Thanks Craig!
Awesome lesson, teacher, and guitarists
Thank you brother for sharing your skills
Sure thing! Thanks for tuning in!
Lovely content Brett. Some crushing guitar playing here!
If you cut your finger like this, stop the bleeding enough to apply a layer of superglue, then when dried, apply another, then another. It's the best way to protect the epithelial tissue and allow quick healing. You can keep playing and if you're gigging it won't hold you back. Namaste x
Glad you like it! Yep I have heard that one before. Thanks!
Golden vibrations! Been practicing chords shapes with scales. Practicing stuff I’ve learned here watching these streams. Go back to recap soon . Awesome fun.
Glad you are diggin it! Thanks for checking it out!
Nasty stuff, Brett. When you're bad... you're great!
Haha thanks!
Dude you’re a beast on that Strat !!
Thank ya sir!
Great lesson!
Thanks for tuning in!
Super episode ! Excellent wisdom
Thanks Joe!
Haven't missed you one bit! Only because i rewatch all your videos so much information and help to pick from.good to see you brother.
Haha! Well thanks for watching!
@@BrettPapa always
I’ve been revisiting your major stash of licks series. That series opened the door for me. You were so young in those videos, but you’re aging well! The major scale is the foundation of western music. I suggest everyone get it under their fingers.
Those go back a long time. I was thinking of updating those courses soon. Thanks for the kind words!
8 mins in and can already tell it’s gonna be a good one. Love the dirty sleazy blues. I play at home and mainly use a Yamaha THR10 (1st edition) with a les Paul and have found some great dirty plexi sounding tones that are great for some dirty blues rock. 🎸👍🏼
Bet that sounds awesome!!
@@BrettPapa it’s definitely good for a tiny modeling amp. I don’t think the wife and kids would tolerate a real plexi 😯🎸!
@@BrettPapa dude man, you are one of the best guys on RUclips! I wish I could take real lessons from you! Holy god I could be soooo much better! I learn so much faster with direct instruction. Good stuff man 🎸🔥
I totally dig your videos brother. Your personalty is top shelf and I would like to buy you a beer one day!
Thanks Terry! I am always down for a beer!
This was a great vid! It’s funny, whenever I’ve made it a point to get a good phrasing I always feel like I sound best soloing to a backing track or even playing with the boys. I can always revert to scales and chord tones but those little phrases really give it what I guess is my sound that I’m developing. Thanks for the vid Brett! YEAHH!!! ☕️
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
I thank you good sir! I've picked up soooo much from a single 36 minute video it's scary! (but good)
Awesome! Glad to hear it! Thanks for checking it out!
I'm always flabbergasted after seeing one of your video's . I'm still a beginner blues player at the level of "learning basic blues licks". So for me it feels as a masterclass not yet on my level to absorb. But it is great stuff. Thanks!
You got this! Just take it slow.
It Does sound Huge. I’m pumping this through 125 watts per channel old Marantz receiver. Huge! Thanks Papa🤙
Yes!!
One of my favorite RUclips guitarrista for sure
Thanks!
I like my tone on the edge of breakup too, but for different reasons. I just like that you can cruise a little dirty, and then when you really dig in you start to get str8 up nasty with a little extra kick from natural distortion. My favorite kind of distortion.
Yep its the good stuff!
Classic lesson. Thank you, you knowso the volume knob ok now🙂
Thanks!
Thx Brett. Looks like life is good in Nashville.👍😊🎸
Yep! I am digging it a lot!
Brett you have so many amazing guests we often dont get to hear your kick ass playing! And that Senn Strat ( or S style) is sounding great.I often see the Nashville players with a Senn after I found how awesome Nash guitars are I been curious about trying a Senn but havent seen one here in STL ( but Killer Vintage has K- Lines and Nash instuments)
Thanks so much! That Senn is amazing! I actually sold it back to the guy who sold it to me cause he was so heartbroken by it. I'll get another soon. They are fantastic. You can only get the Senn's directly from him.
I know, he didn't wind up in Nashville on a fluke, lol.
I can’t play fast, but knowing how the caged and pentatonic scales blend well, has improved my improvisational playing.Creative expressions unlimited!
For sure! It is the secret!
I haven’t been learning songs lately. All I do is take everything I’ve learned and memorized over the last seven years of studying and apply it to practice. I’m beginning to visualize chord structure within the scales, both pentatonic and diatonic.
@@BrettPapa one more thing lol I picked up a song book today. It’s been a few years now except for a theory book I’ve studied now and then.. I gravitated to the chords. Progression sequences . I have some training to do when it comes to developing timing the syllables to a rhythm I can make my own. I make up a lot of cool stuff though playing around with harmony and melody.
Bro, it's so much more important to develop your own unique voice and ability to, meaningfully, improv over progs on the fly than it is to play fast. Fast Weedle deedle playing is bullshit. It really doesn't sound anywhere near as good, playing shitloads of notes in a space, as opposed to playing a unique personal melody. It's harder to learn improv and unique self expression than it is to learn to Weedle deedle
@@nickdrey1200 I agree, I was practicing some scale exercises pulling out Melodie’s, It’s weird how when I’m playing the exercise I can do that plus seeing chords within the scale structure. Lol sorry I got carried away
Great video
Thanks for tuning in!
Ah ha, thought that was a new Stratomacaster!
Another great lesson, learned a lot from you over a few years particularly finally deciphering CAGED!😬🧐🤘
PS, I think the scented candles are obviously beneficial too!
Haha! Thanks Andy!
Nasty blues is the solo to pride and joy🔥
Yep that's a good one!
HolyShitBruh…U totally nailed my problem! My left hand Iz WA 2 HeaVE 👏👏👏🤙😎
Haha! Awesome! Glad I could help.
@@BrettPapa so you r n my area?…sweet. Lots of great musicians around here in the 615. Personally my last real job was 13 years at Gibson USA on massman drive. Engineering dept. working closely with the great Jim DeCola. If u know EVH then u should know of Jim’s work. 😎
This was awesome Brett.
Glad you liked it! Don't know what you can learn from me you are already a fantastic player! Love your vids man been watching them almost every day. Great demos.
@@BrettPapa you’re very kind mate. I think there are many holes in my playing/knowledge and it’s always great watching. Every day’s a school day😀
Yeah..love it...TY
Sure thing! Thanks for tuning in!
Can’t go wrong watchin any Papa lesson!
Haha thanks Pete!
Your playing is smoking and I love the guitar.
Thanks!
Yea! N.Shonne
Neal is the man!!
all secrets grace!!!
The Senn is great!
Yes sir! Yours is one of the best ever!
Papa is the best 👏
No you da best!
Sounds awesome, don’t know which I prefer…this or your Tuttle
They are both fantastic and both use the same types of pickups. Lollar's all the way!
Brett - excellent lesson! If you watch the pennies, the dollars will watch themselves!
Haha! Thanks!
It's vital to learn about the lightness of touch. The harder you grip the strings the harder it is to move on the fretboard. This opens a can of worms though, because one tends to not think about it. If you have soft fingers then ''taller'' or jumbo frets might suit you better because the tendency to press with all your strength is often caused by strings not ''fretting'' because of the meaty part of your fingers being soft, that if of course assuming that the action of the guitar is correct.
True. I love big frets.
Neil S. Was playing with Santana around when he was 14 or 15 years young 🤣 that’s crazy!
I know its crazy! So good!
YO MR STASH U DA MAN!
No you da man!
You are bad ass wow!
Haha thanks Anthony!

Thank ya!
Papa back in the house
Woohoo! Good to be back.
Smoothie squeely. Jet!
Haha
kiler licks. thanks Bret
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
Brett, I have such a hard time tensing up and pressing down too hard. I keep thinking I have to do it to get the sound. It really does a number on my frets. Please give us more tips on it
Just need to constantly bring attention to it. It can take a long time to finally loosen up! Just keep at it.
"crush your pick into an even thinner gauge..." LMAO!
thanks again!
You are welcome!
Is that part of little wing? Sounds great! Thank you! You like single coil or humbucker? I think single coil cuts threw the mix better! But I guess I play my Les Paul more than any other guitar ! Old Guthier Trapp is great! I found him on your station! Man that guy is supper bad on a guitar! Lol! I think your awesome to! Thank you for the lesson learned
I like both honestly! And yes Guthrie is a bad mofo!
George Lynch would land on the flat 5 on some phrases and it actually sounds good and gives a spooky tension to the lick that works for a certain vibe.
Love George! One of my all time favorites. The end of his instructional video he has some incredible pentatonic playing!
@@BrettPapa
Yes sir,..Lynch and Warren DeMartini were the biggest influences on my playing and despite loving to hear the guitar parts in a songs from all sorts of sub-genres from hard Rock, Southern Rock and Country,...Warren DeMartini was the guy that made me get serious and buy a guitar and spend hours a day every day for a few years before even looking up to reflect on my progress.
Hey Brett, I appreciate the content that you share. You are easily one of the very best in the online guitar related stuff....Always happy to share great tips, licks and gear tips and you are great at delivering it.
The Wampler Belle you made me buy is everything you said it was. It sounded great on here but you never know for certain until experiencing first hand,..so I was going with your recommendation. Thanks man.
Haha
G-Dec 30!!
That bridge pickup sounds so smooth. I mexican strat bridge pickup is so ice-picky I seldome use it. To make it worse it doesnt even have tone control!!
Lollar pickups are amazing! Check them out!
When you do the big bends on that guitar I can hear the tremolo springs stretching.
Haha! Gotta dig deep!
Hey Brett, check out Neal Schon playing on a Jimmy Barnes song called too much ain't enough love. Absolutely killer, well known in Australia but probably not in USA
Oh awesome I'll check it out.
Brett, are you familiar with Philip Sayce? He absolutely rips at ferocious blues licks!
Yes! Terrifying player!!!
Your phrasing and hybrid picking is so fluid. How many of those right hand fingers are you using ?
Thanks! Usually just one if the licks aren't too fast and I'll add another if the lick it to fast for me to pick cleanly.
@@BrettPapa Love your playing.
Hey Brett awesome teaching! What is the song at 3.46?
Thanks! Lenny by Stevie Ray Vaughan
Audley Freed always used that 5th thing on Cry of Love stuff
Love his playing! Been trying to track him down out here to interview him. Wish me luck! I love his playing.
@@BrettPapa Too cold in the winter.....Baby
COOLEST LICKS
Thanks for checking them out!
I am a newbie to guitar and theory. Was that opening riff up the neck the e minor pentatonic? I tried to keep up but you were going too fast. :)
Haha! Yes it was E minor. It can also be G major depending on how you use the scale. Same notes you just have to resolve differently.
Thanks man! Love the channel. I am having a lot of lightbulb moments watching your vids.
Great playing and a nice sound but still sounds like a small amp. It was obvious to me even before the amp talk. That strat is an amazing instrument
Thanks Stefan!
Which album ? Specific Title please !!!! 🤔👍🏼
You running the divided by 13 into the ox?
Yes. The JRT9/15 I believe on this video.
Papa!
Yes sir!
Brett what is the guitar maker's name again please? Thank You
Jeff Senn. The link is in the description box below the video.
Hey Brett, Ted Nugent said play till your fingers bleed then keep playin!
Pretty much! He would know!
Looks like "Divided by 13" has gone belly-up!
Haha. I was running out of room. I need to get an amp rack.
18:22 it is not EVH or Steve Vai, you repeating it second video
It is Ritchie Blackmore's lick and phrase, they all took it from him.
Nice lesson thanks again.
Maybe so but I associate it with Eddie because he uses it all the time. But I will go listen to more Ritchie too. He is such a great player!
@@BrettPapa yes of course, they all were influenced by Ritchie. You can hear these licks on many DP songs or live records, check Lazy's solo and you hear it. Thanks
are you in nashville full-time now?
(i thougt u lived in cali for some reason... the hat, maybe?)
Yeah I'm just south of Nashville full time. I used to live in CA.
@@BrettPapa cool. gracias.
I want to be like Papa…I’m going to turn all of my amps on their sides 😂
Lol! Learned that one from Tim Pierce haha!
neal schon didn't credit any of the magic of his playing to his time with santana?
Really? I have seen him talk about that before.
Back from vacation or what?
Haha just trying to finish up a bunch of big projects. Gonna be much more consistent now.
MORE Cool LICK please Bro
I'll see what I can do
Good as always, but how it was named blues, why not red or green? 😋
Haha good question!
Just subscribed!! Get the stats you deserve = P-R-O-M-O-S-M !
Thanks for the sub!
Your technical demos are the best I've seen , But PLEASE, I know you're not just teaching licks, but if you could SLOW DOWN as you demonstrate a couple of these shorter licks to show how exactly you are tweaking through some of the ones that combine chord tones with bends or whatever, you would give us late beginners/ early intermediate something to grasp, and practice these moves on. Otherwise it goes by too fast, and Its just a bunch of muscle memory brilliance. But slow down and TEACH a few of these licks that exemplify the great moves , PLEASE ! Or I'm afraid to buy any of your courses. You're too much of a master to not to share this. Watch your friend Tim Pierce explain that Clapton " Crossroads" turnaround, for instance. PLEASE.
It is tough because its a huge crowd of people and not everyone is going to get what they need all the time. However I have a number of super in depth courses with tabs, jam tracks, etc that are slow paced in depth lessons just like you are talking about. .
Gary Moore, bro! Just sayin’!
For sure! I don’t know why I always forget him he is one of my favorite blues rock players! Killer in every way!
@@BrettPapa - His studio albums are great, but his live performances were stupendous. You could check out any of his Montreux concerts, for instance, but my all-time favourite is his show-stopping cover of “Red House” at the Stratocaster 50th Anniversary Concert - you’ve gotta rare a guy who can channel his inner Jimi like that!
Gary was the best. Sure he rip out fire if he needed to but he had so much control. Even B.B. King himself said Gary was in a class of his own. If he were American or English or Australian or basically from anywhere else but here (Northern Ireland) he would be remembered with pride and honoured by a statue - and rightly so!! Sadly even here people have never heard of him. It is so sad. They are more likely to remember and honour dead terrorists.
Gary gave the world a vision of what could be achieved if you dedicate your time to learning instead of plotting or spouting hate, as our so called "politicians" did/do. A nation of less than 2million and about 5 per cent would know who Gary was or where he came from. He grew up surrounded with murder and hate, as we all did in the seventies and eighties here. Most young men from Belfast in those days wasted their lives and took the lives of others without so much as a day's thought.
He didn't allow himself to be influenced by the hatred. He worked hard and became the very best there can be through hard work and dedication. He was a virtuoso and is overlooked so often. I have seen so called top 50's and he isn't even mentioned. Can you imagine that being said of SRV or Albert King et al? It is really sad. I admit i am biased as a fan but a blind man on a galloping horse could see how sad that is. At almost 50 i have not long took up the instrument myself ( a few years). I used to sit as a kid and listen to Gary and thinking "How the hell is that possible?". Now, as an adult with a little knowledge, I know the technicalities of what he did but still wonder " How the hell did he do that???"
It looks like you’re running out of room for amps…
Haha I know! I need an amp rack!
Yep i stole that trick from BB king, he used to try and imitate his favorite singers and horn player melodys on guitar, i often try and throw in some stylistic or smokey robinson vocal melodies into my blues playing for added feel
Not a bad approach there!
It will really humble you and show you that for the most part, those same pentatonic notes were holding many more hidden possiblities when it comes to combination and order, of notes.
@@BrettPapa @Brett Papa heres a short video of BB king speaking on how he took louise jordans horn lines for his own guitar lines
