In today's lesson we go over the final piece to making mixing major and minor #pentatonic #scales on #guitar come together. So far we have spiced up our typical minor box adding the major 3rd and the flat 5. Next we fused our major and minor pentatonic boxes together. Finally in today's video we learn how to spot chord tones in our scales so we can actually make melodic solos people can remember. After all if you can't play melodically you end up just running through scales with no purpose. Lots of diagrams and a jam track are included and will help you hammer down this concept so you will be well on your way to memorable pentatonic solos that mix major and minor scales. Endless opportunities will be at your fingertips so get ready to blast out of your rut and play solos you will be proud of!

Brett - This series is flashing gold in the pan. I do want to say after watching many YTs and taking a few of your courses. Your playing and teaching is really good and keeps getting better. I dig what you are laying down and its helping me a lot.
Wow thanks so much! Glad you are liking the vids and thanks for the support!
Love the Gilmore reference. I always used scales for 25 years. The past two years I've been getting into Chord tones and it's opened up my playing so much
Yep it's the secret!
You’re my favorite guitar teacher on RUclips. I’ve been taking your CAGED unleashed lesson and it’s been helping so much. I’m thinking more about note choices instead of just spitting out licks. I’ve played since I was 13 and I’m 52 now!
Wow that is awesome! Thanks so much for the support! Glad the videos are helping!
love the mixing major minor course Brett!!thanks again for the killer content!
Awesome! Glad you like it! Thanks for the support!
Could be the best playing and teaching half hour that I've seen from you so far.
Wow man thanks! Glad you liked it.
Awesome jam track and you noodling the examples is effin entertaining!!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
I stumbled onto this, now I ended up down the jazz rabbit hole for a long time, but one listen to ya on that backing track, now I'm back groovin on a rock beat. It's a lot of the same notes of course but hey, what a happy stumble that was. cheers from County Devon, England.
Thanks Brett! Awesome stuff.
Glad you liked it!
course ordered :) i can honestly say ive only realy ever had those big lightbulb moments after watching your youtube videos so its about time i gave you some cash lol, love your style dude keep it up.

Thx for these golden nuggets Brett 🙏
Sure thing David!
Your a breath of fresh air.
Thanks Greg!
If you want the light to come on as a beginner or an intermediate , this is the best place ….. I don’t do it enough but backing tracks are big !!! …. not to mention Brett is a great player and just sounds great 👍🏻
Thanks Paul! Glad the videos are helping!
I would NEVER trust any guitarist who doesn’t wear a perm or use Pinch harmonics!……. Unless it was in fact the indelible B-Pappa!❤
Lol! I do pinch harmonics all the time just not that much on camera lol! This 80's soul will never die!
I thought a perm was a method to manifest curls in one's hair. But in this context it doesn't make sense. My other context is the badass song: never fight a man with a perm. Which I thought was kind of odd. I wonder what a perm really is now. But this journey through different contexts is also really fun. I will enjoy the ride. Now back to CAGED and Blues.
Great Lesson!
Thanks!
Got the course Brett, it's great, thanks
Thanks for the support John glad you like it!
This Lesson deserves MORE LIKES damnittÇ Thanks again Brett!
Lol! Thank ya!
solid gold. amazing playing and knowledge
Thanks for checking it out!
Awesome Papa Stache!!!!!!!
Thank ya sir!
Great video. Thank you Papa
Sure Thing!
This is what i'm talkin about. fantastic stuff Brett
Thanks Brad!
Best lessons on the internet right here! Turns a scale player into an actual guitar player
Thanks so much for checking out the vids! Glad they have helped you out!
Hey thanks for the reminder of the greatness of Schon! I was into Journey on the first couple of records, before Rolie and Dunbar left, lost the buzz by the time Stone in Love came out. You forced me to give it a listen, and so glad I did! I still find the song as atrocious as all the rest of that power-pop era noise, but there is no arguing Schon's phrasing, that tone cutting thru. Those are terrific solos. I mean, the guy was trading solo's with Carlos when he was a teenager, so..there's that. Really appreciate your teaching. Great lesson, thank you!
Yep Neal is the man! Thanks for tuning in!
Dude, you are AWESOME!!
No you are!
Did anyone else get zz top break away vibes from this? Brett! Thank you for another great lesson. Looking forward to checking out the course!
Sure thing! Thanks for checking it out!
Fantastic lesson your a star
Haha thanks! Glad you liked it.
You are right super awesome....your the best
Thanks for watching Kenneth! Glad you liked it!
Put lollar pickups in my strat because of you! Love them!
Awesome! Love Lollar's.
Dude your blowing my mind,i need to learn that.
Give it a shot it really helps!
I love that guitar tone
Thanks! Just plugged straight in!
Brett: your lessons on that are AWESOME 👏. The Gilmour example : you mentioned you have a course on this one as well ? Where to find ?
And : great idea with those guitar guys in terms of their specific song examples (EvH, Angus, Clapton, Page, Rossington etc) . YOU could teach those gems perfectly for sure ! Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪,
You’re the man 🎸🎶. Love it !
Thanks! I have taught all of those videos on RUclips. Just search my channel.
In that first example you do at 5:45, you do a really cool move with 2 quick slides down into a pull off to finish the riff in that lower position. I loved that, any way you could loosely describe that move? Thanks for the lesson, you do fun stuff here
Just sliding down to position 5 in minor pent and souring on that flat 5 note.
sound pretty good ,exactly where i'm at to progress
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
You are amazing Brett, I've been looking at you for the past couple of years whether you know that or not but I have. you crack me up most of the time but you're playing is absolutely outstanding. I can't afford you, I wish I could but I can't. I'll be looking in on you so take care..😊
Thanks so much. Tons of free stuff on here!
you are the best
No you are!
That's a seriously cool looking tele
Thanks!
Love the video and I am really improving after watching this. Quick question, are you picking some strings with your bird finger on your picking hand?
Awesome to hear Clark. Yes I do that all of the time.
Nice 👌
Thanks!
You are just MAGIC !! Everything look simple, even if english is not my language. Simple words, slow licks to make understand what you say, just one default for me, can I buy your right hand ?😉🤣
Thanks! Glad you like the vids! Just keep practicing you can get way better than me!
Very good teatcher.. Even for french speaker ;-)
Awesome! Thanks!
Great stuff there 👍but can you go thru your hybrid picking style when you do this pentatonic runs? Sounds awesome🤟
Yep gonna do a vid on that soon
Cool lesson Brett , gonna revisit this , and so good to hear you paying homage to Neal Schon .👏 deserves way more recognition than he gets ..His album with Jan Hammer " Untold Passion " just slipped under the, radar for most guitarists ..We absolutely thrashed it through the 80,s awesome exchanges between the two of them trading licks .Encourage everyone to check it out . eg No more Lies 👌
Yep Neal is the man! His 80's stuff is amazing. Even the record with Hagar has amazing playing on it as well.
I still have my copy on vinyl that I bought when it came out!
Papa you are on fire with these lessons as usual, you really are the best teacher on RUclips .. cheers mate 👍🏼 best wishes from London UK
Thank ya! Glad you like the lessons!
Love it dude I just bought one. You like the stock pickups or would you replace them?
Awesome! I put Lollar's in all my guitars. They are my favorite pickups.
I've purchased the course but still wanted to go through these RUclips lessons.
Interested to know where your head is at with your example.
e.g. when your playing over D major at 5th fret are you thinking :
1) Maintain Am Pattern 1 as your 'base'. Find D chord shape notes and overlay extra notes from pattern 5.
2) Shift to Pattern 5 as your 'base'. Find D chord shape and add some notes from pattern 1 as 'flavour'.
Appreciate that eventually they are the same notes, but more interested how you approach it mentally/visually.
At the moment I do a bit of both; think if I'm starting with a melody I work with option 1 (in the key) - but if I start with a chord shape in a progression I'll go option 2. Feel like I'm not doing either well though and wondered how you approach it. Thanks 🤟
Thanks for the support. Yeah that is the basic idea the course will have more in depth explanations.
That was Saturday Night Special....HOT SHOW
Haha
yeah cause roots are always the hidden keys ...dam it . Really nice vid pop ! Pretty funny cause i use to put a Boss bass Eq or guitar one depending , in the chain Pboard to overboost wich really works well when you have some low output overdriven pedals like the boss orangeds1 as an example. Love ya pop :)
Thanks for checking it out! EQ's are a secret weapon for sure!
Love your videos and content papa. Can you give the fans what they really want…….. you guessed it…. Guns N Fu#king Roses! 🤘🏻
Lol! I will see what I can do.
Mister Papa! Aka Da Tonewood Tickler aka the backdoor slide bandit 😜
Lol
Beginner here, question. Did your A and D chord backing track also include the G chord? If it was just A and D, how does playing G notes work within the progression? Thanks for the help. Cool video. Thanks for posting.
Killer tone!
What wiring is in the Nash Tele?
Thanks
Thanks! Just standard tele wiring.
Agree the first Journey albums are excellent
Look into the Future is so good
Yep all so good!
That tele sounds insane
Thanks! Stock Nash 60's style Tele.
Check out Jimmy Lyon's playing on early Eddie Money stuff. He mixed major and minor pentatonics seamlessly
Great lesson, thanks! What Marshall and do you always use the Ox box? seems like I see that more than any other these days
Thanks! That is a Marshall 1987x 50watt. It's on my Sweetwater gear page.
💯
Thanks!
Do you have a video on hybrid picking, that makes your licks sparkle and adds a bit of country sass.
It has been a while but tons of people have been asking. I'll put one up soon!
This is a really great demonstration and I’m absolutely fine with sounding like you. Too bad I don’t.
You are spot on about the solo from Mother. I don’t want to stir shit up, but that song alone is great supporting evidence for why I’ll take Pink Floyd w/o Waters over Waters w/o Pink Floyd any day of the week.
Thanks! Yeah they did some great stuff together for sure. I like both incarnations but I hear ya!
Among the players you mentioned are mine two plus Leslie West & Joe Bonamassa, What I found strange was West hadn't even heard of pentatonic scales till during one of his first recordings Felix P. showed it to him, that's crazy! Great lesson dude! How long did it take you to get good at using extra fingers for picking on your picking hand? 😎😎
Thanks Mike. It doesn't take too long. Just a little practice a day and you can get it going.
hey I love your videos and are watching them almost everyday.. but you should try my pickups made in Norway:-) like a tele pickup with 12 k output, varm and real rock n roll sound
Sounds awesome man. Thanks for watching. I am a low output guy as far as pickups go.
At the risk of exposing myself as a complete idiot, I had know idea you were so good.
john
Lol! Thanks! All good man. I have my days haha.
Fun stuff. sounds like acdc
Thanks for checking it out!
The Boss EQ Pedal you use is the GE-7 ?
Yep! It's on my Sweetwater page in the description box.

I can't wait for the video where you explain why you have 2 Ox Boxes turned on 🙃
Both amps are plugged into them. I always keep them both on so I don't accidentally blow a transformer forgetting to turn one of them on. .
@@BrettPapa Does anyone make a Y-splitter cable / adaptor for speaker cables, so you could plug them both into one Ox and sell the other one...?
BRETT, Try to make a Warren DeMartini phrasing concept lesson because he uses mixolydian dominant chord tones. You only showed major chord tones and minor chord tones but Demartini uses Dominant chord tones. I think i know what you're trying to say as adding the bVII chord tones into your major pentatonic and minor pentatonic licks = Mixolydian mode. But what chord tones can you add to make it sound Dorian, lydian, phrygian,? It seems to mean when adding the b5 blues note in the major pentatonic and minor pentatonic licks = lydian mode? but you have to add the chord tones of which chord to make it sound like the lydian mode?
Hmm I will have to check that out. Never really thought about that before.
@@BrettPapa yes check it out
@@BrettPapa when playing minor blues progressions or major blues progressions you can play the outside notes from the parallel minor and parallel major mode. in the key of A minor blues , the outside notes from A major are C#, F#,G# and the outside notes from C MINOR are Eb,Ab,Bb but if you can show in a video lesson on how to use these outside notes in a minor blues progression and also in a major blues progression. I know you have shown how to use A major pentatonic but you can also use C MINOR have has outside notes Eb,Ab,Bb.
Brett, you go so fast. At times I lose you. Do you go slower in your course? Maybe I am slow not sure. I appreciate you.
Haha all good. Yeah the course is over 6 hours so it’s super in depth. RUclips I gotta try and pack it all in quick.
right on and excellent, = Playing and more importantly, = Great Guitar Lessons=" I" "FOR ONE CAN REALLY APPRECIATE THIS". = "GLAD YOU MENTIONED = Sir "MR. Brett, wanna come live in France and become my IRL teacher ? We've got good food, wine and the weather is OK !
Haha! Sounds fun.
First!
Wooohooo!
Nacho tele?
It’s a Nash
It is a Nash but Nacho tele's are amazing!!
Yes I want to play better. HeLp!
Got plenty of courses and videos to help ya out!
@@BrettPapa you were first teacher to connect my pentatonic positions to major and minor chords. I thank you foreva Papa Playa. Ur the best!
Hello i'm the one your follower .i need your help if you possible to help me about my song solo guitar it's difgicult for me
Surely the electric guitar has got to be the most emotional instrument ever...what do you think??
Pretty much!
So much yak! I gave up.
K. Have a nice day!
Don’t for Steve Lukather. He does incredible shit
One of my favorites. Best vibrato ever!
Something that happens to me a lot is that I play on the pentatonic major and minor and I emphasize the notes of the chord without thinking about visualizing the notes using caged, I do it by ear and then I analyze it and in most cases I rest on a tonic of the chord or on a fifth or third, it is difficult for me playing and visualizing and thinking about the change, it comes out more naturally to me doing it by ear
Yeah if your ear is good enough you don't really need much else unless you want to understand why it all works. I know tons of fantastic ear only players.
@@BrettPapa and also use both, hearing and knowledge resources, excellent lesson as always Brett! The Best RUclips Guitar Teacher Ever!! 🎸🔥
