This song still brings tears to my eyes - and I saw he almost got you. At the passionate end, your eyes looked very close. Dev's an expert performer that can really express the emotional intent of his art - and project that into his audience. Devin can literally make you cry , or make you smile so wide that your face hurts - sometimes in the same song. Thank you so much for a wonderful video Cheers

The power behind Devin's music is unbelievable. I saw him play live a fair few years back, and they opened with their song Angel, and when the song kicked in, I was hit with this wall of sound that took the breath out of my lungs, and before I knew it I was crying because I was so moved.. An absolutely incredible musician, and from everything I've seen and heard, a genuinely nice guy. I'll always check out anything he puts out!

10:07 This is where Devin breaks most "newcomers" to his music 🤣Some simply tears up,some ends up in a major O-face,and some simply freaks out over the fact that he hits that note so "effortlessly". Devin Townsend and Floor Jansen are my favourite vocalists to see people react to (and of course the insanely talented Chester Bennington) 🥰

  • @billtbodger
    @billtbodger 2 года назад +2

Devin Townsend the only singer who can terrify you with a lullaby and then sing an amazingly heavy song so beautifully it has you in tears of joy, the guy is a genius and terrifying at the same time, I first heard him singing in Vai in the early/mid 90s the emotion he has in his performances is outstanding

  • @j800r_aswell
    @j800r_aswell 2 года назад +4

He actually used to be part of an extreme metal group called Strapping Young Lad. While he was in a dark place for a lot of it I believe a lot of the material was cathartic for him. It served as his anger outlet. Anger at the industry in particular. You should really check out Detox at some point. Brutal vocals yet still hitting some impressive melody in some of his screams.

There's only a handful of vocalists that are in the elite category. Devin has been doing this since the early 90's and it's a minor miracle his voice didn't burn out after his vocals with Strapping Young Lad. Check out these other vocalists if you haven't already - Daniel Gildenlow, Geoff Tate, Sahaj Ticotin, Tom Englund, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Jimmy Barnes, Jeff Buckley, Roy Khan, Einar Solberg, Ihsahn, Krystoffer Rygg, Mike Patton, Mikael Akerfeldt, Maynard James Keenan.

To answer a few questions you had in the live chat:
    * ruclips.net/video/VRcwCVkN_7I/видео.html for snippets showcasing his vocal range naming the songs and albums you can find them on. If you're only interested in the money notes, so to speak. Not recommended for a reaction BTW but if you're interested.
    * Devin with hair, sounds like you already googled it. Hope it was all you hoped it would be, lol. SYL - Wrong Side is a frantic, shirt and fun one with hair if you'd like to check that out. Most people look at Love? for an introduction into SYL though, it's got a different vibe to what you listened to this far.
    * Vocal gymnastics - Death of Music RAH or Plovdiv version. Even better combined as the holy Trinity as others suggested but if you don't have 30m, you'll please Devy fans with that one.
    * Why? From his quarantine concert for his cleans/musical theater style. Or Bring him home if you want to check his acoustic cover of the Les Mis song.
    * Steve Vai - Deep down into the pain for a very young Devy breaking through as a singer ;)
Thanks for the breakdown, first time I've seen someone react with a heart monitor, very creative!

This show was incredible. We were sat quite far back. Behind an Aussie who'd flown to the UK just for the gig. He did a full Ziltoid set, and then this fan chosen set list.
Said Aussie was a burly long haired, beered up geezer, long hair, sports team vest in London in October. He was in tears by the end of this set.
Fucking excellent gig. The girlfriend and I've been lucky enough to see Devin twice as anniversary celebrations. Retinal Circus and this. Retinal Circus was how I introduced her to his music.

Devin has never had formal vocal training. He used to scream his head off in a meat locker when he was a teenager. That's how he taught himself to sing.
A few years later, when he was singing for Steve Vai, he went to a vocal doctor who told Dev that he had maybe two more years before he permanently ruined his voice.
That was nearly 30 years ago. Devin's voice has only gotten stronger since.

"This song is _so_ long, I'll get bored!"
    "Just listen, you'll see..."
_Orion_ or _Master of Puppets_ or _Disposable Heroes_ or anything from Tool or _Echoes_ minutes later:
"Wait! No! That's _it?_ I want more..."
And they can't believe it went by so quickly. They get a pop star in the studio, the producer wants two-hundred-and-ten seconds of product, and make sure it's only arty enough to hold listeners 'til the DJ cuts to commercials, and the fans get trained to not expect too much...
The only people that ever complained about the length of _Bohemian Rhapsody_ were radio station managers wondering how they were supposed to work in twenty-five minutes of advertizing every hour if they start allowing every song to be so long.
How can we make money if all this _art_ is happening?
Remember kids: once something you love becomes profitable, it stops existing for any other reason _but_ profit. Capitalism is cancer and greed destroys everything.
But give a decent artist his choice and your time, beauty happens, and you'll experience things, and the curtain pulls back a bit more, and you might not _see_ where you can go, but you'll feel the constrictions of the world loosen. Time feels different when you're being crushed, but it flies when you're having fun.

Would love to see you react to Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust (their most well known song and the music video got voted as the best Finnish music video ever back in 2006 when the song was released). Truly an underrated band from here in Finland. Also a band with many different sounds all the way from slow melodic songs to full on rock.
Although if you want to immediately hear a song that showcases how crazy good the lead singer Marko Saaresto's voice can be (and while his vocal range might not be the most dynamic out there he is an amazing example of what you can achieve by having absolutely perfect control of your vocals especially the raw emotion that his voice is able to convey) then i recommend listening to their song Daze. His vocals on the chorus are something out of this world.
I just think that so many more people would love their music if they just ever heard them but since their from Finland it rarely happens. Although many have heard their songs in Remedy's video games Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Brake and Control
(Also every single reactor i have seen reacting to them has been pretty much blown away by their music so i'm very confident you'll like it)
also... also... lot's of deep and meaningful lyrics and wordplay in their songs
sorry for the long rant i just really want more people to know about them :D

Everyone I know falls in love with him instantly.
The first time I watched "The Retinal Circus" with my ex, she made me stop it by saying "it's too intense and too perfect, he's a genius." True story.

I don't know if there's a good live performance but I really recommend checking out Strapping Young Lad's 'Shine', because that was Devin's band before he went solo (or during, idk) and that song has insane literal highs. He's done mad stuff with them.
