      Exactly, whenever people ask him how he learned to sing like he does he says he just does it by sheer force of will, he doesn't know how he does it.

      Not strictly true. Yes he is mostly self taught particularly whith the musical aspects but vocally he was heavily involved with school choirs and local singing groups when he was younger.

    • @andoletube
      @andoletube 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@CraigHamil People like to buy into a narrative. Just like the one relating to this performance about him having the flu - as though it was practically impossible for him to sing, yet he did anyway. Anybody who knows Devin's performances knows this is very close to peak Devin. We don't need to weave false narratives about him being mute until he was 17 and then he opened his mouth to sing. Just let his music do the talking - he doesn't need any preempting because he's incredible already.

    That's known as Devin's "Wall of Sound", layers and layers of sound sometimes so low you don't so much hear it, as feel it in your being! If you're looking for more theatrical Devin, I recommend his live covid quarantine version of the song "Why"!!

  • @martyk656

    My bro has been on his last few tours. Whether it's metal music or sparser stuff like his Casualties of Cool album, it is almost always songs with very lush arrangements. Devin Townsend is a tremendous singer and creates a positive vibe no matter the style of song he's performing.

    When Devin says to the crowd that at some point, pick a tempo, always cracks me up 😂😂😂
    The sound is referred to as his wall of sound 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Now you must do the 'EMGtv' version of 'Kingdom', the 'Retinal Circus' version of 'Grace' (where you get the added bonus of hearing the beautiful vocals of the wondrous Anneke Van Giersbergen), the 'Order of Magnitude' version of 'Genesis', then for something completely different, the Quarantine show version of 'Why', and he even does 'Les Mis'! ruclips.net/video/hiv7vuDilxE/видео.html

    If you legit want to go on an even crazier deeper enveloped journey without the need for lyrics, listen to the Pulse Live Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd. Yes there are lyrics, but the guitar solo at the end is something else and something you won't here from another version.
    As for more classical singing from Devin Townsend look up his "Why / Quarantine Show" Very Disney-esque

    Please react to a singer called Mike Patton, lead singer of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and Tomahawk. He is a vocal phenom & does things with his voice that are beyond comprehension. Known as the man of a thousand voices, he can go from low gentle whisper to high pitched demonic scream in a second. He is so talented that he learnt to speak fluent Italian after marrying his Italian wife that he performed a concert called Mondo Cane where he sings old Italian songs. The man is just unbelievable with what he can do, so good in fact that he can replicate the sound of a didgeridoo. I cannot recommend enough that you should check him out & believe me when I say you will not be disappointed.

    It's not opera BUT he has done an incredible version of "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables, which is out there on RUclips and well worth watching for some more emotional singing. He's a beast is Dev, he does incredible work across the board, his band Strapping Young Lad defined extreme music for a whole bunch of people back in the 90s and early 2000s. The work he's done away from that has just blossomed and blossomed until he's writing both the most complex music he's ever done alongside some of the most soothing and serene. I love that he is getting the recognition he deserves as it always looks like he is working himself to death with the level of output he's got going.

    Perhaps not quite an opera as you mentioned, but he is working on a "musical" right now, so watch that space! Unfortunately DTP (the band who played here) is no more, but Dev does continue with his prolific album creations and tours (recently with Dream Theater and he heads to Australia in November) He's written classic material right the way through since the 90's until now - perhaps summed up well in his 2019 release Empath - listen to this for a sample of his variety ruclips.net/video/1n7uvokARQ4/видео.html
