Canada's best, even though most Canadians have no idea. I saw him with Strapping Young Lad when I was like 19 and he still had his skullet. When he hit the stage he screamed "HELLO MY BABIES" and I knew pure greatness was about to happen. Even though it's been 18 years I still remember that show so well.
I grew up maybe 15 kms away from where he lives and I had never heard of him until 2 years ago, while discovering European Metal during the pandemic. Even then, I figured he was European, maybe American, until I saw Elizabeth’s Tea Time reaction and he mentioned he got his tea from SuperStore….. I’m like, “what?”
yeah tack on all the Canadian punk rock bands,Industrial bands, Metal bands, ad nauseum, that have gone unnoticed for Decades - so many of them are music pioneers (as Devin/SYL is a glaring example) I would try to get my older sister to come to the NeW York Theatre in Vancouver to see I Braineater and Skinny Puppy in the mid 80's but she was into Brit Metal at the time. 15 years later shes asking me to see Nine inch Nails and MArilyn Manson. Devon did guitar work for Frontline Assembly as well in the mid 90's.
I was 16 the first time I saw SYL, in 2006, had never heard of them before, it was at Download Festival in the UK and I was waiting for the band after them, Devin walked on stage, skullet and all, screamed 'STICK THIS IN YOUR CUNT AND SMOKE IT' and proceeded to assault me with just SO much fucking heavy music. Been an absolute favourite ever since.
And I believe he had a terrible stomach ache as well… Or maybe that was another show they had filmed… Talk about bad luck, but it doesn’t seem to stop him from crushing it! He is insanely talented, and has gotten even better vocally over the years, just look at the live studio session of this same song that he did in the early 2000’s… This newer performance has much stronger vocals which is a bit surprising as many vocalist start to get worse as they age, not Devy apparently.
Not sure why, but this song hits me so hard and I cant help but having a knot in my stomach and a tears in my eyes! I've tried to show this to my friends, but none of them have gotten the same thing from this as I have.. Devin is simply incredible and a huge inspiration!
I came to comment that I wish Julia would react to "The Death of Music" as well as the first 2 songs in that trilogy "Funeral" and "Bastard". The RAH performance of those 3 songs is about 26 minutes, but they really do all fit together beautifully as 1 big epic song. PLEASE Julia, please do this. I promise you won't regret it. If you have to pick only one, then "Death of Music" for sure. It is utterly unique in it's song structure. The intensity, passion and the dramatic inflections are unreal. Thank you for a great reaction. I so much enjoy the looks on your face when he hits those impossible notes as well as the anticipation of knowing you're going to lose your mind in 5 ... 4... 3... ;))
I just got goosebumps when the whole band kicked in! I love this song for the super slow tempo and giant sound....really sets an atmosphere for the song.
First of all I’m glad to see you back with videos on your own channel! Second of all, what a great pic to come back with! Devin Townsend is one of my favorite male vocalist in the world and I have missed people doing reactions to him!
Having spent so many hours watching and rewatching these reaction videos to Dev, your method is such a good blend of analysis and not pausing the video every ten seconds. We as the audience can enjoy the music and still get the reaction.
Not only was this after a full set they had already done but rumor has it he was also sick during this performance. Just shows his talent and durability, he is a truly gifted singer.
@@digimortalone2759 That was a great show on that tour. It was mind blowing seeing Devy do a guitar duel with Vai and hold his own. ...and then Devin did a vocal solo with all kinds of effects and was wild like nothing else I have ever heard.
@@Ontariosound Play well or look cool. Personally I always chose to play well, but that's classical training. Unless you have Vai-length fingers, a low slung guitar isn't for everyone.
I watched him live early this year here in Portugal opening for Dream Theater and i remember listening to this same song and he sounded exactly like in this performance.
The ridiculous part about this show is that the band was part way into the second set of the show. They played a full, entire set, took a 25 minute break, and then came back and played ANOTHER full set after that. They played for almost 3 hours altogether the night they played this. The fact that he can still hit those notes at this point in the night they played is unbelievable to me.
at 11:10ish when you talk about the change in the music and you mention his face - it struck me that so much of his sound and the feeling in his music is directly reflected by his face and mannerisms, he's an open book communicating emotion through all means possible which makes his music HIT HARD in my opinion and come across extremely relatable and genuine. super neat. love you. love him.
I would recommend you to listen to "WHY?". It is considered a bit of a joke, since it is clearly a musical theater style piece (often called "Disney" by some), but his vocal color work is scintillating! He admits that it is the most difficult song in his catalog (or was at the time). The finale is breathtaking.
This dude fucks me up haha everything he does from 6:30 to the end producing the most sudden physical reaction I’ve ever felt listening to music. Goosebumps, face half melted half like I’m too close to an explosion, muscles stiffening. Insane
Been able to see Dev play this with a full band twice and once in a very small acoustic show where he was seated almost directly in front of me. His voice is consistently incredible and has been a massive influence on me as a musician for 15+ years. Good pick, Julia.
You HAVE to check out "The Death of Music". He gives himself goosebumps because of the intensity of that song. It's absolutely beautiful! There's a 30 minute video that has Funeral/Bastard/Death of Music chained together which comprise the ending of one of his albums (and is widely considered a DT holy trinity). If you got the time, that's an amazing musical journey. Also, welcome back! We've missed you.
Oh my! You should have done this one with Lolli as well! ;-) One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists. Such a charismatic and expressive singer, Devin reminds of Floor Jansen for the way you can tell he feels every note, and the color of his voice and facial expression matches it. 2 days to wait is going to feel like an eternity!
One thing I love about this song aside from Devin's performance is that whole guitar melody and the wall of sound throughout the song. It's so powerful sounding and catchy despite being so simple.
Yeah he was poorly throughout the whole performance sadly but you would barely know beyond those brief moments where it feels like he cracks. This was about 2 hours in to the gig where he'd already performed Z2 in its entirety, which is no joke, and he still had Death of Music coming up which is an absolute powerhouse of a song that is so vocally intense he doesn't even have a guitar throughout the song. He is incredible.
That highest note is a G5 I believe. Just...insane. This performance makes my whole throat, & body, tense up, absorbing it. When I need to hear something raw, painful, & glorious, this is one of the songs I go right for.
Random as your schedule is. I am sure this will be a great analysis again. Good to have you back in your little studio. Hope all the Julia’s survived the road-trip…
You’ve reminded me again while you are one of my favorite vocal coaches on RUclips. The intricacy and your ability to comment on a lot of points (and Caption Julia of course) makes it worthwhile to watch you. ❤❤❤
I love that song and Addicted was the first album by Devin that I've listened to (knowingly, I did listen to Detox earlier but I didn't know it was him) so it keeps a place in my heart
Thank you for your excellent reaction Julia! If you're able to, check out Devin's performance of "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis on the CBC. Its the best live recording of his clean vocals I've ever heard, with a bonus at the end😉. Also, the "Funeral", "Bastard" and "The Death Of Music" trilogy from RAH are the best live vocal performance I've ever heard. So check those three out together if you have the time. It's a real odyssey. More from you, and more from Devin are always good!
It’s incredible to hear his interview where he says singing is a chore and he sees himself as a guitarist first. This guy has one of the most fantastic, epic voices in rock history. He’s a vocal unicorn. So glad you reviewed this song.
After listening to this song a million times, I can hear a couple of cracks in his voice, but I think he was sick. Just a great performance. I always come back to it.
That closing section. The notes, the tone and the lyrics. Get me everytime. This is by far my favourite song of Devin's. And the Plovdiv performance adds a layer that has to be heard.
After a Devin Townsend concert I attended in 2019 (and me singing with every tune as loud and correct I could) I wasn't able to properly speak for a while. Was absolutely worth it!
Out of all the reaction videos out there, I *really* appreciate the text notes throughout! I've play instruments my whole life and enjoy singing, but the notes really help me understand the voice as an Instrument. Awesome stuff, thank you!
Devin is one of my alltime favourite performers, he is the total package, emotion, great voice even screaming and growling, great guitarist and fantastic songwriter, he is the one singer who can terrify you with a lullaby and sing you to sleep with the most brutal of songs. He is unbelievable with how he can express all of his feelings with even quite slight changes in tone. I cannot wait to see him live again next year
16:25 If you watch his Quarantine Show version of this song, you'll notice it's a heavily distorted F5. He starts singing it without distorsion, then adds it little by little.
You're so right about Devin's ability to convey intensity in performance. On the other hand, I was delightfully surprised to find out how relaxed and gracious he is offstage. I guess he had to be as a Canadian.
At 3:37: not sure if it helps answer your question but for this particular performance he was 1hr 30 into a set on a day in which he had a cold. I feel like that probably contributed to the hints of distortion creeping in every now and then.
The most incredible thing about Devin and his voice, despite his insane range and control, is that he says all the time he actually HATES singing, but he only does it because he feels like he has to. Because that's what people expect and that they'd get bored without it. But on top of all that, he has zero actual training in proper technique. He's said many times that the sounds he gets from his voice is by "sheer force of will", which to me is even more insane. The fact he hasn't destroyed his vocal chords by now is amazing. He's clearly just a natural talent. I love this man so hard. 🤘🏻🥺
Amazing song, brilliant reaction. Devin's ability to convey what he's singing is incredible and I'm always very happy whenever you happen to do a reaction on his music/voice. Thank you so much!
So excited for this one, one of my favourite creators with probably my favourite artist of all time, I don’t know why but I think you would have enjoyed the ziltoid albums, especially after a little bit of research into them, Devins podcasts about his album creations are extremely relaxing and interesting to listen to
The sound production here is some of the best i have heard in regards to rock and metal concerts. And of course every member of Devins own "Project" is at the top of theyr game instrumentally, creating this unique atmosphere. And the best vocal performance to this song by Devin himself,so impressive that Deadhead became my favourite song by him. But it has to be from this concert,i just cant get enough! 🥰
good morning. good afternoon. good evening. it all applies to me. ** this channel brings me joy. I was unaware of Devin... and it is a unique situ where i might actually prefer the post production ( I have not yet watched it... i am "clean" in my comment)... i might need dialed in before i witness live. i've been in those waters before... knowing the song before the song. ... here... he is washed through the rolling strings.... I want to hear him...
When I saw the thumbnail for this video a group called the Small Town Titans instantly came to mind. Their lead singer has an incredible voice and can cover all of these ranges.
You should listen to his words about the new album, and how he struggled to gon on stage, again. His thoughts about: "I'm just another guy you would meet on the streets. Nothing special." I was fornutate to watch him and his band live in nov, '19. A show, packed with fantastic performance and a twinkle in the eye. And the audience reflected that! Peacefulness and respect and friendlyness where all over the place. Which is not always a given thing. It made it an absolutely great concert.
I'd like to see you analyze Mike Mills: Toehider -How do ghost work There is a live play along video where he demonstrates his vocal acrobatics and awesome guitar skills.
I own this concert on blu ray. In between songs at one point, he mentions that he was getting over the flu and that only a couple days before he had sounded like "Super Grover." The fact that he sounds that good while ill is truly remarkable.
one of the most breathtaking performances i've ever heard.....the tone, emotion, perfect distortion. i would love to know how he keeps his vocal longevity
Devin is such an incredibly talented and remarkably expressive performer, and it definitely hasn't gotten old yet witnessing your reaction and analysis to his epic talent
Superb analysis of this performance... I love how knowledgeable you are; this song always makes my jaw drop. I love your videos, I love your reactions. Much respect to you. I hope you're well and that you stay safe. Thank you for this reaction video. :)
Amazing video Julia - Thank you! You haven't been exposed to his tremendous falsetto vocals. There are 5 different facets to his voice, that he switches from seemlessly during the same songs. No matter what style song he writes, the main instrument is always his voice. His new album Lightwork is a joy - and a great gift for the holidays. Cheers!!
About 50% of the time I listen to this song I still tear up and almost cry as the emotion he articulates and expresses feels like I'm hearing directly from his beautiful soul .Not sure if that makes any sense, but this song and the way he performs it is beyond special.
DTP are no longer unfortunately, but Dev continues, substantially as a solo artist and producer, with some very talented session musicians for some of his albums and live performances
I love Julia like you have instantly vibed to this masterfull epic music ART that he and his band are creating.. i am not even a huge fan of his. But everytime i see him.. or listen to his song.. i love to hear it.. he has insane ideas and its different tones.. skipped beats.. sounds from electrical stuff (keyboards mostly ). It doesnt even matter if you like hard rock.. classic metal.. new metal.. classic music maybe (if your not just a dork that doesnt understand other instruments) jazz lover or hip hop ...rap or pop lover... you just must me IN the song ... the musical masterfullnest of the whole band and Devins nice sinngin voice and his screams (that are not every repulsive to not used to audience as others because of the masterfull music) are so captivating. I can listen to this first 3 minutes for half a day on a loop.. such nice musical performance. If you like music.. you should like this performance. Devin is really nice guy and we should admire him more.
My favourite Devi song, and my favourite rendition of it - thanks for reacting! And your facial expressions during the high fry scream, almost as amazing as the song! 🤣 As always, if Devi tours Aus again (which I imagine he will, he seems to enjoy it down here) you must, must see him live!
I think Devin is the most talented musician out there at this time. I've watched him make a song from beginning to end on a ToonTrack RUclips video and it was amazing. He did it all from programming the drums to playing the guitar, bass and keyboards and then laying down the lead and backing vocals. My absolute favorite songs of his are when he does duets with Anneke van Giersbergen. Check out 'Bend it Like Bender' and 'In-Ah'.

I believe Devin was sick for this performance. Or just coming off being really sick. Amazing.
Yes he was! He was dealing with laryngitis. It makes it even more impressive!

So excited for this one, one of my favourite creators with probably my favourite artist of all time,
I don’t know why but I think you would have enjoyed the ziltoid albums, especially after a little bit of research into them,
Devins podcasts about his album creations are extremely relaxing and interesting to listen to
Thank you! I haven't listened to Deadhead in a while. Still gives me goosebumps!
His brand new album Lightwork is amazing, you'll love it.
Every time i listen to him, i have the feeling that his vocal cords gonna explode and tears apart ! But for him, it's just a monday...
Nothing special."
I was fornutate to watch him and his band live in nov, '19. A show, packed with fantastic performance and a twinkle in the eye.
And the audience reflected that! Peacefulness and respect and friendlyness where all over the place.
Which is not always a given thing. It made it an absolutely great concert.
I'd like to see you analyze Mike Mills: Toehider -How do ghost work
There is a live play along video where he demonstrates his vocal acrobatics and awesome guitar skills.
Wow you get his vocal ability perfectly. Much love to you. Love your on screen notes over breaking the flow of the song.
I own this concert on blu ray. In between songs at one point, he mentions that he was getting over the flu and that only a couple days before he had sounded like "Super Grover." The fact that he sounds that good while ill is truly remarkable.
Let’s Gooooooo! Can’t wait for Julia’s analysis.
one of the most breathtaking performances i've ever heard.....the tone, emotion, perfect distortion. i would love to know how he keeps his vocal longevity
The sound engineering mixing in this is Epic! You know it was Devy doing that for the album release and video here. Love his walls of sound!
I get mesmerized watching her...love it
seeing Devin live was a bucket list item, and I've been lucky enough to see him live 4 times. Incredible
Woohoooo….. can’t wait for this one! Hope you’re getting over the jet lag now you’ve had a rather busy couple of months 💖💕💖
This was imo his pinnacle tour. The duets with Annike are world class too.
I've been waiting a long time for you to react to this amazing song. I can't wait for you to feel every notes in it ❤
You can feel the suffering and with that voice he can represent it perfectly. Devin is perfect.
By far the best Devy reaction in a long time. Finally, yes indeed!
Yes! Been a Devin fan since the mid 90s. Pure musical genius 🙌 👌 👏 ❤
Wow, never heard of this group but they are very good
DTP are no longer unfortunately, but Dev continues, substantially as a solo artist and producer, with some very talented session musicians for some of his albums and live performances
Epic song. Epic performance. Epic audio engineering. ✨🇨🇦
At an F5 I consider Hevy Devy a force of nature.
Its so lovely seeing you get it.
Looking forward to this one 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
My favourite Devi song, and my favourite rendition of it - thanks for reacting!
And your facial expressions during the high fry scream, almost as amazing as the song! 🤣
As always, if Devi tours Aus again (which I imagine he will, he seems to enjoy it down here) you must, must see him live!
I highly recomend his song "why?" It's super disney esq. A must listen for anyone getting into devin
Another excellent reaction/analytical breakdown, Julia! 😁
So happy to see you doing Devin again!
