His music might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it's undeniable that he is one of the most interesting and unique individuals we have in music today. He is a master at what he does. He had this album The Hummer, where he tried to find frequencies that would make objects in studio resonate, he had album Puzzle that’s hard to describe in one sentence, I’ll just say that it’s driven by abstract art and involved contributions from about 60 people and not all of them where even musicians. He’s not releasing a lot of stuff like that cause most people aren’t really interested in such music and he’s trying to make a living with art. Guess my point is, he might not be known for crazy experiments, but he certainly is tried to push boundaries in the past, if you look beyond his popular work.

Devin is just so fluently human. He’s a beacon of humility and there’s almost nothing superficial about the man. Just a raw, honest, organic human being… with a GREAT sense of humor to boot 😂

He just seemed like an elitist, that loves to curse for no reason-and not very comfortable in his own skin. But maybe I will look him up sometime. Looks like a lot of people like his work. I kind of think of Devin is this generation's Frank Zappa: Incredibly talented, has a clear vision, chooses who he works with, has an insanely varied discography, not everyone's cup of tea but can only be respected I think he is a global treasure and needs to be protected!!!
He's also not a proto edgelord like Zappa was (although his edginess was tongue-in-cheek enough to be charming at times i.e. Joe's Garage, which is one of my favorite concept albums).

I didn’t know who DT was by name. I had never heard of SYL or any of his other projects. Directly after the NAMM Coffee with Ola I went down a Devin rabbit hole. According to Spotify I spent over 88k minutes listening to Devin material. I bought Sex and Religion when it was a brand new cd and he was 19. I remember thinking “who the fuck is this guy?” Now I find Devin to be one of the greatest vocalists in the world. His creativity and sensitivity is exactly what the world needs. Thank you Devin and thank you Ola for all that you do. You are truly appreciated!!

DT & DTP dominates my playlist and I binge watch his live stuff on RUclips almost daily. His live stuff hits me everytime, I've never experienced anything close. Nightwish is far second....

I have seen Devin live a few times, but the ones that stick with me are when he was a Teenager with Vai, where he screamed his heart out and had so much agression inside, then recently I saw him in Newcastle in a small venue where he was simply brilliant, not a single moment was wasted, between the stuff from Lightworks Which I Love and older songs there was just this pure showman full of fun and sincerity that is missing from so many bands. Devin is the insane genius musician yet the most Sane man on the planet.

This video could easily have been at least 3 times as long. Thoroughly interesting. Not a massive fan of all of Devin's stuff (is that even possible?), but there's no denying the talent - and I fucking love his outlook on things. Definitely some lessons in there I should have learned years ago.
My favorite part about Devin is how relatable he is on stage. says things like "Pick a tempo" when the crowd is clapping in different tempos. 😂 He just keeps it real and puts out some cinematic HEAVY ass music and I love it.

I met Devin for a minute at the Warehouse in Tampa, Fl. when I was super young around the year 2000 and I told him he was the best musician in the building and he was so nice and thanked me in a kind voice while smiling. Funny thing is usually a musician will deny it if you tell them that they are the greatest at something but I think Devin knew I meant what I said and he probably thought I was right too. It was Dark Tanquillity, Strapping Young Lad, Napalm Death and Nile. I drove 4 or 5 hours to see SYL that night.
These talks almost feel and sound like therapy for Devin. He says social interactions drain him but he's unloading here. I guess it says a lot about how much he likes and trusts you, Ola.
There's not a single interview or documentary or any kind of videos with this man that i don't find interesting and inspiring and fundamentaly a moment of pure joy to watch and listen to Devin is such a great human being with strong rooted and kind values, and he's also (of course) a really talented composer, instrumentalist and singer (one of the best in the world from my perspective), and his music is always part of the top of my favourite songs/musics/sounds that i love (from SYL to DTP) !
Fuckin' LEGEND! Devin got me hooked on metal with the "Ocean Machine: Biomech" album, and "Bastard" in particular, when i was 16 ... that's 25 years ago! He'd be the person i'd pick if i would get to spend a day with any person i want ... as Einstein and Hawking and all the other interesting people are all dead already, and would probably be rather boring anyways. Let's hope current and future generations will get to enjoy him (and his works) a lot longer!

His quarantine shows are simply amazing and the one in the studio in the middle of the forest performing Ocean machine is one of the best memories I will take from the lock down and all I need for a Friday night.
I took my 8 year old daughter to see him in 2016. She loved him ever since she heard the song Grace. She was just right of center stage and he came down off stage and grabbed the stuffed Planet Smasher she was holding and proceeded to play the next song with it in his pick hand then hopped down and gave it back to her. Devin Townsend is a LEGEND. My favorite musician of this generation. Enya metal 🤘🤘 His vocals are phenomenal... His guitar-playing is amazing... I would love to see him on vocals and Rhythm guitar for Dream Theater...just for 1 album.
When I put a Devin album I know it's not gonna be what I'm expecting, and that's the most fun part of being a fan of his work. And it always keeps getting better. .....Lightwork is amazing!
It makes me so happy to see Devin finally happy with his process and the music he’s putting out. DTP made some of my favorite albums of all time but even by 2014 with Z2 he seemed like he felt constrained by the project.
Thank you Ola for bringing Devin back. This was a fantastic experience. I love the long-format, “let them say what they want” thing… it may not flow like water, but it’s genuine.
Man, I could sit here and listen to Devin talk all day. I met him before a show back in 2013 and he was the most humble and calm dude on the planet. I told him about how much him as person and musician have inspired me in so many ways. And he was very appreciative, and wished me well with my musical endeavors. Probably one of my most cherished moments.
I recall the first time I found this wonderful human. A friend announced they were seeing DTP live touring Addicted and I wasn't really aware that Devin existed outside of old Strapping. I was peripherally aware of both SYL and to a lesser extent Vai's Sex and Religion album but had not really explored his non-SYL material. I instantly went on a journey finding Devins music, his other projects, his collaborators and have been a great fan of the man; if not all the music, ever since. Through Devin I also discovered his connection to Anneke VG and this lead me down the rabbit hole of dutch metal. Not all of his music is to my taste; but that OK - I believe there is something in his catalogue for everyone and always encourage people to give his work a listen.
13:43 - As someone not too much younger than Devin, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one who's descended into just playing ambient and vaporwave rather than constantly digging for new bands and genres.
I've never been a massive fan of Devin's music (I just don't get a lot of it; he's an INCREDIBLE talent though, and I LOVED Empath), but I thoroughly enjoy Devin as a person. I've never met the dude, but I'm glad I live during a time where he's one of the more interesting people in this universe, and chooses to let us take a peek into his amazing world on occasion. If I’m being honest I love SYL it’s why I started following his career. These days his music doesn’t work for me but I stick around because he’s an awesome, honest and articulate dude and I love that about him. He’s the best. He’s not Heavy anymore but he’s still Devy and that’s good enough. 🤘

What I admire about Devin is his sense of honesty and humanity. Not only has he influenced my own guitar work, but also realizing that being 100% true to yourself is the ultimate freedom whether its in your artistic expressions or your sense of self.

I can still clearly remember the first time I discovered Devin' s work. I had recorded an episode of the old MTV show, Headbangers Ball around 1995 and on it was the video for Detox. It blew my mind. After that I moved onto Ocean Machine and have been hooked ever since. The solo in Deep Peace is my favourite solo in any sing I've ever heard. Will never tire of this man.

Dev tends to pick out the negative feedback on the Puzzle, but it's such a brilliant piece of work. When all typical song structures drop away you're left with this mass of sound that responds to itself in such a primal, organically musical way. Such a trip

I saw him live a week or so before everything shut down. Was my last show for a while.
They kept me sane and I saw him at Bloodstock 2021 which was one of the first big gigs after the pandemic.

Man, I could sit here and listen to Devin talk all day. I met him before a show back in 2013 and he was the most humble and calm dude on the planet. I told him about how much him as person and musician have inspired me in so many ways. And he was very appreciative, and wished me well with my musical endeavors. Probably one of my most cherished moments.

I recall the first time I found this wonderful human. A friend announced they were seeing DTP live touring Addicted and I wasn't really aware that Devin existed outside of old Strapping. I was peripherally aware of both SYL and to a lesser extent Vai's Sex and Religion album but had not really explored his non-SYL material. I instantly went on a journey finding Devins music, his other projects, his collaborators and have been a great fan of the man; if not all the music, ever since. Through Devin I also discovered his connection to Anneke VG and this lead me down the rabbit hole of dutch metal. Not all of his music is to my taste; but that OK - I believe there is something in his catalogue for everyone and always encourage people to give his work a listen.
13:43 - As someone not too much younger than Devin, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one who's descended into just playing ambient and vaporwave rather than constantly digging for new bands and genres.
I've never been a massive fan of Devin's music (I just don't get a lot of it; he's an INCREDIBLE talent though, and I LOVED Empath), but I thoroughly enjoy Devin as a person. I've never met the dude, but I'm glad I live during a time where he's one of the more interesting people in this universe, and chooses to let us take a peek into his amazing world on occasion. Excellent interview!

If I’m being honest I love SYL it’s why I started following his career. These days his music doesn’t work for me but I stick around because he’s an awesome, honest and articulate dude and I love that about him. He’s the best. He’s not Heavy anymore but he’s still Devy and that’s good enough. 🤘
There are a lot more of you than you realise. Peak Devin is 1998 (City/OM) and it’s never been the same since… but I’m sure Michelangelo pumped out tons of shit apart from the Sistine Chapel and the David sculpture. We take the gold out of the mud. ❤
What I admire about Devin is his sense of honesty and humanity. Not only has he influenced my own guitar work, but also realizing that being 100% true to yourself is the ultimate freedom whether its in your artistic expressions or your sense of self.

I can still clearly remember the first time I discovered Devin' s work. I had recorded an episode of the old MTV show, Headbangers Ball around 1995 and on it was the video for Detox. It blew my mind. After that I moved onto Ocean Machine and have been hooked ever since. The solo in Deep Peace is my favourite solo in any sing I've ever heard. Will never tire of this man.

Dev tends to pick out the negative feedback on the Puzzle, but it's such a brilliant piece of work. When all typical song structures drop away you're left with this mass of sound that responds to itself in such a primal, organically musical way. Such a trip
At first I thought it was like a Devlab style "I'm gonna melt you guys" but it turned out to be actually relaxing and nice to the ears with melodies and actual song structures at times
