    Yes Devin really is a performer. If you are looking for fun his 'Why" is a must if you are looking for the limits of his scream his live "Deadhead" is a must. ""Grace" is like going to metal church. The choices are limitless

    Was able to see him 3 times including just him doing an acoustic set. After that show my gf and I went around the back of the building and caught Devy loading his own gear. When he was done, he gave us his undivided attention for about 15 minutes and signed his book for me. He even drew a picture in it of Ziltoid and signed it again. People say don't meet your idols, Devy breaks that rule. It must be a Canadian thing.

  • @rofyle
    @rofyle 3 года назад +1

    Devy began his career right out of high school as the vocalist for Steve Vai's band. It didn't take long before he grew disillusioned with the music industry though. So he quit his job, moved back home to Canada, and founded a new band that would be as brutal, angry and non-commercial as he could make it. He called his new band Strapping Young Lad.
    But his anger eventually got the best of him. He began drinking heavily, abusing psychotropics and using copious amounts of drugs. It messed with his head to the point where he finally had a breakdown and quit the band for fear he would kill himself.
    Once again he moved back home, started a family, got his act together and focused on a new kind of music that would be experimental, but positive and affirming. Hence was born the Devin Townsend Project. Some time later he shortened it to just Devin Townsend. He produces, writes and records all the music himself with the assistance of guest musicians whom he himself hires. Today he is one of the kindest and most respected artists in the industry.

    I'll let you in on a little secret, Aileen. You can literally pick just about any random song from any Devin / SYL / CoC album and you will get a ton of views because the Devin fans absolutely devour any Devin reaction content. It's just a joy to watch people experiencing him for the first time or just getting their toes wet with his catalog. You do not have to pick one of the same 5 songs that a billion other reaction channels have done. A live performance that shows off his stage presence is pretty much every live performance he has given.
    There are so many amazing performances depending on what kind of experience you want to have.
    Some of his most moving performances for me are when he does an acoustic performance. Most of his songs are made to be full of vocal harmonies, guitars and synthesisers, so hearing him adapt a song to purely acoustic is really beautiful.
    For me, my recommendation is a tie between his acoustic performance of Funeral for CBC Music and his acoustic performance of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables live in Auckland, New Zealand.
    For non-acoustic, it has to be the triple of Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music at the Royal Albert Hall. This version of Funeral is much closer to the original, but I really prefer the acousic version for its impact.

    • @jaredmulconry
      @jaredmulconry 3 года назад

      Devin's vocal abilities are largely self-taught. Unfortunately, that means that most of what he's able to do is a result of force-of-will. He's spoken often about how his technique is to hammer his voice until it's shot, then take a break before going again. I would love to see him refine his technique and learn how to take better care of his voice, but I don't think he could do it any other way now.
      Devin is releasing a double album in a few months time that is going to be super strange (according to him). Keep an eye out for that.

    Fascinating man with a pretty tragic story regarding addiction and mental illness. Might look into his previous band Strapping Young Lad. Straight up metal.

    So many songs across the boarders range of music a musician has ever ventured . Grace live is stunning, Why in lockdown is adventurous , ih-ah live is beautiful, the list goes on .Two that you may love also are mountain top & flight (the female singer in these two songs , looks a lot like you)

    I don't know if anyone else in these comments mentioned it, but Devin has a great interview on The Charismatic Voice (funnily enough, the reaction channel where I initially discovered him after Elizabeth reacted to this same performance). That's worth a check. Devin also has some podcasts he's done in which he describes his musical inspirations, emotions, though process, etc. as he was writing various songs/albums, though I suspect you may have already learned about that after checking his channel.
    Anyway, I know I'm late to the party, but oh well 🤷‍♂️😅

    Devin is always surprising with his performances, he is the trickster of metal, his sense of humour and fun is infectious, he can lull you to slepp with the heaviest songs then terrify you with a lullaby, I love most of the stuff he has recorded over the years and have been following his journey since the mid 90s, Devin never disapoints

    If you go back to his first couple of bands and listen to his voice evolve over time, it just keeps getting better and better. Most singers have to compensate for damage the longer they sing, especially with the harsh fry screams. Devin just continues to amaze!

    Most people are going to recommend you watch Deadhead, and although it's a fantastic song and he once more displays excellent vocal skills there, I'd go with something that not many other reactors have done. Deep Peace of the By a Thread series is a fantastic video to react to when it comes to his personality on stage. I really love how he interacts with the audience in such a genuine way. And this one also has the most epic (beautiful really) guitar solo in history; this time for real though :3

I did not watch the whole thing but at least enough to hear him say that he was coughing blood after a concert.... that does not sound healthy at all
