I'm really glad you got the chance to experience this song - people who have lived through the things that you have are exactly who Devin wrote this song for. He said in interviews, in the years leading up to writing his "Empath" album (which features this song) he had lost a number of friends and acquaintances to suicide, and thus the song (and the album as well) became a type of anti-suicide statement in a way.
Devin's music with the Devin Townsend Project has had this energy for years, but this is the most specific and direct song in this direction.
You'll be interested to know his upcoming 2022 album is called Lightwork, and it's apparently an entire album written in the same vein as Spirits Will Collide - musically accessible, emotinally heavy, and spiritually uplifting. Hope you get a chance to hear it when it comes out!

IIRC he said in one of his podcasts that his bipolar was just because of the shrooms and weed he took to a ridiculous amount. And when he quit those things his symptoms disappeared, so he was "only" bipolar while taking drugs.

Music can be such a good outlet for emotions and Devin knows it. His music is his therapy. He has fought his demons, but throughout the years he seems to have come out on top. Listening to Strapping Young Lad - Shitstorm on one side shows a really dark side of his mind, while Why? is his inner Disney princess.
I wouldn't recommend checking the first btw, it's dark and heavy. Good luck on your journey, stay strong and stay yourself.

I honestly believe Devin's music saved my life. I never got close to actually carrying it out, but around 10 years ago I went through a long, long period of daily suicidal ideation and the only thing that kept me going was this man's music. It was like a shining thread in the darkness that I clung to and pulled myself along with, if that makes sense. This song is the culmination of that aspect of his work and I'm so so pleased you've heard it. I cry every time I hear it :)
EDIT: Your face after hearing "We may not be brave so let's start" made me so happy :)

Nice to meet you, Amanda - I'm so glad to find your channel. 7 years ago, I was at the lowest part of my life. 2 heart attacks, a near fatal car accident left me with constant intense pain. I couldn't work and I had made up my mind. I obtained the pharmaceuticals and I was just going to go to sleep forever. Before bed I saw some random RUclips reaction video to Devin. As I started looking at other live performances and was infused with inspiration, forgiveness and love. I was hooked hard and listened until the sun came up. For the first time, in a long time, I wanted to participate in life. And I started a brand new chapter in my life that very day. It's amazing how many other people have been touched to their soul. Devin is a master at conveying every emotion through his music. This song still gives me tears of joy - that's such a powerful gift. I'll see you on Patreon, and arrange for us to share another song from Devin Cheers

Followed devy since his first demos back in the 90s. He is a grnius musician and lyricist but i personally believe this song is his magnum opus. Such a beautiful work of art. I am so glad you finally got a chance to check out this song (I had suggested it in a RUclips comment several months back). Devin is one of my all-time favorite musicians. I've heard it described as not death metal but life metal, and I think it's an apt description. He plays a lot of heavy music (though also a lot of not-so-heavy music), and touches on some very deep topics, but he's almost always uplifting and inspirational in his approach. He played several livestreamed shows over the course of the pandemic, and honestly those were some of the most helpful things for my own mental health over that time. Glad you found this, and found it uplifting and helpful. Hope you delve deeper into his catalog; I think you'll enjoy and appreciate it. Good luck on your journey!

Devin, and this song in particular, have been there for me every time I've hit rock bottom. His songs, his lyrics, the musicality, have always lifted me up not through sugary false platitudes but as if someone who's already been there is reassuring me and reminding me that I can get through it. So very glad for this reaction video and how you're approaching this, and I am so glad you're discovering this incredible musician.

Seeing music pick someone up and recharge their batteries is both brilliant to witness and more relatable than I can put into words.
I've always liked this song and Devin has been a big help in my own personal battles, but you've given me new insight into the meaning.
Despite being someone who has always found music a tool to help me get back on track I somehow missed the power to the lyrics in this track.
You hit the nail on the head with pinpoint accuracy and in the process helped me feel less alone.
    Thank you. :)

I am so glad you exposed others to this song. Devin is an advocate for mental health issues and the first time I watched this video It made me cry because I immediately related to the teenager with the guitar. I could tell he was either bullied or picked on. It brought back some memories. I loved your reaction. I know you have helped many others by exposing them to the message in this song. There are so many songs about suicide, and they help with exposure, but there are not many that help people know that there is a way out Thank you again for all you do Amanda. I love the positive message you give in your videos. You earned my subscription, I didn't give it. To give you some background on Devy, he battled with depression and was on an emotional roller-coaster and self medicating was just making things worse. Devy realized that through positive thinking and meditation he might have a chance at a healthy mind and spirit, he really turned his life around and this song was his message to those suffering in silence with mental illness and thoughts of suicide to let them know they aren't alone. Like he said at the end of the song... remember in the end, death is not where it ends. Peace and Love

From his early days with Strapping Young Lad, a very angry outlet, overcompensating for a lot of things he felt there was pressure to be as a young man, through his growth as a person, embracing his passion while allowing himself to be proud of what he has, his talents, but also embracing his goofiness and his inner child.

This isn't Devin's best song, but it's one of my favourites, simply for the way it hit me. I've struggled with depression for the vast majority of my life, I remember being a child and constantly challenged with thoughts of suicide that have never gone away. Little tidbit about myself but I was recently diagnosed with what my doctor called "early on set depression" I guess since I'm still relatively young (just turned 26 in October) I think I've known for years I've been depressed...anyways I'm not usually an emotional person but something about this song by Devin Townsend just sent me over the edge. First time I heard it I just started crying...and im not even sure why. Maybe the lyrics combined with the way he sings I guess. Thank you for your song and video reaction/analysis. This song and video have been very uplifting for me as well. You have a well thought out way of expressing yourself that speaks to me in so many ways. After decades of wrestling with myself and depression, I knew that there had to be a better way because I knew that I was not well and I was getting worse. I approached my family doctor who referred me to a fantastic mental heath team. I'd been seeing many different therapists over the years, but this team has a Psychiatrist and a CBT who helped me clear the way. Learning that I've been dealing with PTSD and complicated grief without even knowing it was enlightening. There's always a better way it seems now, especially when I was growing quite weary from spinning my tires.

Beautiful reaction, young lady. It’s wonderful to see the healing power of music. Devin does a wonderful job at providing that to us. Perhaps you might look at Seether’s ‘Rise Above This’. It is another powerful song reminding us that life really is worth it and YOU are definitely are worth it, too dear. Best of luck in life and with your channel. 😊

This and NF - Just Like You are absolute mental health songs that make you feel better after. PLEASE react to Just Like You, you won't be disappointed. Also if you really want to hear an aggressive positive song about still being here against what other say check you Hatebreed - Looking Down The Barrel of Today. Both NF (Rapper) and Hatebreed (hardcore metal) base their career on openly talking about mental health and positivity and they, including Devy's catalog, are my go tos for bad days.

You pretty much just have to listen to Empath in it's entirety at this point if you haven't already! Devin is an amazing and eclectic artist and Empath is probably his most intentional "mental health" album, if you could label it.

Your reaction to Devin was so perfect. I see two reaction to this song. Either the inspiration and energy you displayed, or tears of release. There are so many commenters who state this song save them at "that" time. I suspect Devin would be proud of the impact of this song. Devin does a similar theme in a much heavier song.
"Higher" ruclips.net/video/CxT-NNZMD-k/видео.html Basically it outlines an ongoing struggle. In the middle, the darkness comes out - but there is victory at the end. Both songs hit people. It is a matter of what kind will reach a particular person.

Subbed! You rock and I (like yourself) get emotional about music and I always try to find the positive in life. I would love you to react to a Christmas song by a mainstream rock band that tends to not get a lot of credit but their only Christmas song is emotional and has a very hopeful and positive message for all. Please consider reacting to We All Need Christmas by Def Leppard.
~~You are an inspiration~~ Merry Christmas!!

You opened up the Devin Townsend rabbit hole now, next you should look at Deadhead and Kingdom from him, you'll be amazed! He has a crazy good voice! None of those sound like appropriate songs for this particular channel. x> Yes they're impressive, but they lean more suffering than recovering. Strapping Young Lad especially is from when Devin was wildly unhappy and frustrated, and is all about anger.

    • @jamesm5883

@@ToweringToska Deadhead is about how toxic he was towards his wife during his heavy drug use and how she stayed by his side, also Kingdom was the same so the songs are very much applicable towards this channel. Also we learn more about recovery from the suffering!

15:52 If you are going through that, but are too scared to open up. You still do not have the courage or motivation, to talk to someone or even seek professional help.
There is an easier way, that helped me immensely. Find someone online. Go anonymous, and open up, share your whole life, story, fears, struggles to someone online, while being comepletely anonymous. You do not even have to unload everythng to one person, but give tid bits to different people. Allow yourself to be completely you, and believe me, you will find at least someone who appreciates you for who you are. And even if you don't or takes time, the process itself will be immensely liberating.
It is best to do it in real life, but doing it online will be an starting point. You might feel like you are not worth it, but if you search, you will find people that think that you are indeed worth it. Value can be very subjective, the people that surround you might not appreciate you, but there is people that will, you just have to find them.

    • @MentalAmanda
      @MentalAmanda  2 года назад

You're 100% correct. That is why I started this community. If someone just needs to unload their story and feel heard and validated and safe, I'm happy to hold space for them.

@@MentalAmanda You are such a great person Amanda! I wish there were more people like you.
I wish I was able to be that kind of person, and while I am quite empathetic, it is extremely taxing to me. Because I absorb other people's emotions and keep them with me. So I learnt I have to put boundaries, because helping someone could ruin my entire day. And making it daily, was just too much.
But I do admire people that are willing and able to help others, such as yourself. I am very glad you are still with us, and made this channel. You are a ray of light, for those that have gotten used to the darkness.
