- Until the NBC sitcom Amen, the Black church, while having been parodied in numerous movies and television shows, had rarely gone beyond the choir and the minister in Hollywood. However, when the show hit the air, audiences were finally able to see the political as well as humorous side of a centuries-old institution. Amen aired for five seasons on NBC from September 27, 1986, to May 11, 1991. It was created by screenwriter and television producer Edwin B. "Ed" Weinberger. He also served as one of the executive producers.

Not many actors, much less Black ones, have been in 3 consecutive hit TV shows. Sherman Hemsley has. Starting with “All in The Family” (1973-75), it’s spinoff, “The Jeffersons” (1975-85), & “Amen” (1986-91), Hemsley was a constant TV presence in our homes for almost 18 straight years in 3 different decades on 3 different shows. Iconic Black TV actors such as John Amos, Redd Fox, & even Bill Cosby, have never accomplished this feat.
He is VASTLY underrated!
That episode of Martin he was in was a classic episode too. He had my dying laughing. It was always a hit if he was involved.
He was also one of the voices in dinosaurs, the ABC show.
That's my mama around 1975
People still do the George Jefferson dance.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
He also appeared on a lot of sitcoms after Amen.
The Amen theme song never gets old
No it does not! ❤
Amen (pun intended) 🙌😉😁
Yesss it gets me hype every time I hear it
Yes 🙌🏾
I was writing an Easter production of which Vanessa Bell Armstrong was a special guest. During the planning she let us know that Shine On Me had just been authorized for her to record. Obviously I wrote in a whole new scene just for her to sing it and the our church went crazy and started singing so loud until they became the choir.
Anna Maria Horsford needs her flowers ASAP very underrated
I thought Anna was so-GORGEOUS-and-SEXY !!! Lord have mercy. LOL. I remember she was also on the Wayans Brothers tv show, she played a cop.
@@kerry-j4m Tall and thick yes yes
Agreed! Loved her in The Wayans Bros. as Dee. She was excellent in the film Murder Without Motive, she played Veronica Perry (Edmund "Eddie" Perry's mother). The film is based on a true story of a teenage Black growing up in Harlem who gets a scholarship to a prestigious prep school. After graduating his life is taken by a police officer.
True dat she was also the movie Friday and the 3rd installment of the film Friday After Next playing Ice-Cube’s character Craig’s mother
Totally agree.
This was when NBC Saturday nights were great. Amen was top-notch.
Yeah we watched “Amen”, “227”, and the “Golden Girls”
@@JayBelafonte same here! Those were the best 3 shows to watch on Saturday nights
@@seanpowell1661Don't 4get Saturday Night's Main Event!!
RIP to Sherman Hemsley, Jester Hairston, Elsa Raven, Montrose Hagins and Rosetta LeNoire
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯
Jester Harrison played in another sitcom That's My Mama with Clifton Davis. Jester Harrison also portrayed the butler in Sidney Poitier's In The Heat Of The Night, the famous scene when Sidney's character slapped the racist back.
It was nice to listen to a story about a show where the actors weren’t resentful or jealous of one another
This is long overdue. Glad to see there was no scandals or ego crap, just a great show that was needed then and needed today!!
There was scandal and it was covered up
There was definitely a scandal. 1987 Tanya Hairston .
And a good theme song, sung so well by Vanessa Bell Armstrong.
@@tiahairston1980tell it
Such a classic show. Saturday nights on NBC were lit. I remember as a kid my mom and aunts would always watch Golden Girls, Amen and 227
Did they also watch Empty Nest. It is a spinoff of The Golden Girls. Now that's a funny and great show.
Best childhood ever!
Yes, same here. Born in early 80’s and remember my mom/grandma watching Saturday night NBC in the late 80’s! Such great times!
@@raymondsmith8027Agree!!
No nurses? Empty nest? 😂😂
Loved the intro when he did double duch 😅 I was amazed as a kid and old man did that 👏🏾 🙌🏾 😀 😊
I miss AMEN. I really do. One of the most underrated shows ever.
Totally agree
It's on Tubi.
I always liked Amen better than The Jeffersons personally
It's on Tubi
Growing up as a COGIC kid, this was a must see sitcom for the whole family. Amen is a bona fide CLASSIC. Rest in paradise, Sherman Hemsley. 😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️💐
Clifton Davis came to my church in the early 90s as a guest of my pastor. I love this show and Sherman Hemsley.
Nice memory. ❤️
I met Clifton Davis in person. We were on the same flight from my hometown to Las Vegas!
Rolly Forbes was my favorite character. He was so funny.
He was hilarious. A pure mess lol
Mine too.
Yes he was
The church in the intro is a few blocks from my house in West Philly
The jawn is right on 41st and Spring Garden. I pass by it all of the time.
One of my favorites sitcoms growing up along with Cosby Show and 227. Man do I miss the 80s.
This was my all time favorite show. The theme song would get me hyped every week.
One of my favorite episodes was the time they threw a carnival. Several carnival goers became ill from the macaroni salad the church sold at the carnival, and the church ended up getting sued. Losing the lawsuit would have bankrupted the church, but the Deacon saved the day. To refute the claim of the macaroni salad being contaminated, his plan was to eat the macaroni salad during the court proceedings, get the lawsuit dismissed, then QUICKLY go to the restroom and "expel" the macaroni salad before he could digest it and make himself sick. His plan almost worked, until the plaintiff's attorney called Rolly to the stand as a rebuttal. Rolly took SO long with his testimony, the Deacon couldn't get to the restroom in time. He was still suffering the effects of the contaminated macaroni salad 2 months later. 🤣
Fun fact: the show is called "Amen." Jester Hairston, who plays Rolly, wrote the old gospel hymn called "Amen." There was an episode where he sang it on the show.
I remember that episode. The entire episode was a talent show. I LOVED their performance of that song at the end.
Jester Hairston was from Belews Creek, NC, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
I'mma watch this before RUclips take it down again 😭😭😭
This was one of my favorite shows! I was probably the only kid back then to watch this show and 227. I watched with my granny and mama..literally grew up watching it!! It started when I was 11 and ended when 16. I am glad they stuck with Anna...because she fit that character perfectly. "She will always be Thelma"
Another Fun Fact: Clifton Davis & Jester Hairston costarred in the first season of _That's My Mama_ ; the latter left before the retool of its second & last season.
I was a little girl, but I remember. I also remember Theodore Wilson as the mailman, Lynn Moody as Clinton's sister, Ted Lange as Junior, and Teresa Merritt as mama in That's My Mama. That was a good show too, and I wish it lasted for more seasons.👍🏼👍🏼🕊
*I was going to comment about this fun fact but I'm glad it was already posted.*
If I may add another important fun fact: Jester Hairston was also a prolific composer. He wrote the Christmas song "Mary's Boy Child". Many of us remember the Boney M cover that was a hit. And Clifton Davis wrote the Jackson 5 hit "Never Can Say Goodbye". Incredible talent.
@elulugnie4250, also Jester was the singing voice of Sidney Poitier, in his classic 1963 film, Lilies of the Field.
Wow. I never knew that. Thanks for the info😊@@brandonpage7087
@@brandonpage7087Yes! He was also in "To Kill a Mockingbird".
I remember when Clifton Davis was married to Melba Moore, they had a variety show back then. God in heaven Melba could SING!
@@4CQueenYes! I didn't know of their marriage and show until I watched her Unsung.
Amen 🙏🏿 Was One ☝🏿 Of My Many Favorite TV Shows of The 80’s. Jester Hairston and The Sisters Were The Standouts For Me. Sherman Hemsley and Marla Gibbs(227) Landed On Their Feet and Hit The Ground Running, After The Jeffersons.
I Loved this show, I remember when it was a big thing when Thelma and Reuben finally got married. I always wondered why did the other sister leave the show because her character just disappeared.
Amen:NBC Saturday night classic……The amen theme has been stuck in my head for years and still have the amen episodes on my RUclips tv list…..RIP Sherman Hemsley…..
I love watching Amen. I still love watching reruns of Amen.
Me too!
Another church show call Good News had similar concept. Also one of the cast mate from Amen played on that show too
It's on Tubi now!
I loved this show I'm glad it's on Tubi now!!!!
I love how the actors advocated for the show’s quality. It was a remarkable sitcom. Great work, Juicy Pop!
I grew up in Huntsville where Oakwood is located. it's a small 7th day adventist college. Had no idea Clifton went there. great video.
I know that Clifton Davis is/was a Seventh Day Adventist.
Barbara Montgomery [who played the sister with the shorter hair] also was on "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". She was at sherman funeral when will smith had wished him dead and he died [for fake] and she said she was his "mistress. " lol also she played Khadijah grandma on living single.
I love that episode of Living Single too
Nana has a boyfriend that she hiding from her daughter and grand daughter.
I LOVED this show growing up, & was lucky enough to have seen it, in its original run. I have early vague memories of watching Amen with my parents. Jester Hairston had had a prolific career, as both a composer, & actor, prior to Amen. He was in a number of golden age films, & even some classic western series, & he was even in Amos 'N' Andy. Fun fact, Roz Kelly later went on to voice Bubbie, the whale mom of adopted human child Flapjack, in the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. It's a shame that we haven't had more series like Amen!! Also, for me, this series is forever linked with that creepy Carson productions logo. Lol, yes, i'm one of those people, who was scared of certain closing tv logos, growing up. 😁😁😁😁😁
Woo-hoo!
Great show!
Fun Fact:
Clifton Davis is also
a hit songwriter,and
wrote the song “Never Can Say Goodbye”
which was a hit for the
Jackson 5,Issac Hayes,
and Gloria Gaynor.
Clifton also wrote the
Jackson 5’s other hit song
“Lookin’ Through The Window”.
Another Fun Fact:
The late Ray Combs,
the second “Family Feud”
host,was the warmup act
before each show started.
R.I.P.
Jester Hairston,
Rosetta LeNoire,
Sherman Hemsley,
Montrose Hagins,
and Elsa Raven.
There needs to be a written Biography for Sherman.
And Clifton. He's done so much. Songwriting, recording music, philanthropy, Broadway, movies, preaching, television. He's not just about himself. He's worked with so many charities, always giving back. ⚘️🙏🌹💒
One of the earliest TV shows I remember watching with my Mom. Loved that theme song. Props to "Dee from Wayans Brothers" for telling that director the absolute truth about making a show about this important topic. Great video!
I didn’t watch this sitcom as much as i did the other ones growing up. Can we please get a video on another underrated sitcom which is The Parenthood.
I never knew about the Parenthood tv show till a few years ago, someone mentioned it in the comment section on youtube,so,I watched most of the episodes on youtube and enjoyed them a lot.
@@kerry-j4m It was streaming on MAX. I’m not sure if it’s stilll streaming on there.
Yes, that's a good one. There was also a newer version of this show called, Good News. That one was great, too.
@@therealmarlonbellamy Thanks,I'll look for it there.
@@ilabelona9807 Thanks for the info,I'm gonna check it out too.
One of the greatest shows ever. Respect and appreciate to the cast and crew. Underrated big time
I was a kid when this aired and I loved it
Same here!!!
This is my comfort show. I watch it every night
I LOVE Amen. It is easily in my top 10 of shows. I would DVR the morning 4 hour block on COZI every day.
If I can find a dvd package on all seasons, then I would buy it. This sho made my Saturday nights most entertaining.
The entire series is streaming on Tubi
My favorite episode of That's My Mama is the "Whats Going Down" Episode. Randy Watson was amazing as Joe the Policeman! Jackson Heights baby!
This is one of my favorite shows. I'm so glad I can finally see the reruns on Tubi.
Barbara Montgomery also went on to appear on other shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sister, Sister and Living Single
Yep. And, she was also in the t.v. miniseries The Women of Brewster Place.🕊
She also guest starred on "A Different World", when Whitley was supposed to marry Byron but ended up marrying Dwayne. She played Byron's mother.
I was surprised when she wasn't on Amen in its final season.
I loved this show and I still watch it on Tubi
Amen was a marvelous show
Amen! was always my favorite show. I still watch it on Tubi.
This is my #5 favorite TV sitcom of all time. I have such fond memories of this show, and I still watch it to this day.
My childhood!! Such a good show.
Amen was a good and funny show I love watching that show Sherman Hemsley was really great person who literally give shirt off his back to help people RIP to him and the rest of cast members of this program.
Amen is one of my top ten favorite tv shows
I loooved this show as a kid. I remember not being able to jump double Dutch and seeing him jump in i just would jump like i was jumping rope 😂😂
This is part of my childhood! I remember seeing the cast of the cover of JET Magazine. The characters saw three score and ten 🙌🏾!
Great commentary. I watched Amen as a kid. To this day, it's still one of my favorite shows.❤
Great story on Amen
Juicy pop videos always get me through the day! Fantastic tv show and music reviews ^^
Why RUclips take this down yesterday?
NBC blocked it.
@@JuicyPopEntertainmentNBC hates youtube.
Wow, NBC is such sour puss all you doing is keeping the classic shows alive
@@JuicyPopEntertainment4:35 nice 👍🙂.
I still watch this on Tubi
Another great theme song ❤
I love this show, and I run an episode every Friday night. Clifton Davis is right: the cast’s chemistry really glued the show together. And that wonderful bouncy theme song didn’t hurt either, something which today’s comedies (if they can even be called that) are sorely lacking. RIP to the departed cast members, and Thank You, and God Bless You! to those still with us. See you Friday night!
I just binged watched this on tubi.
I would love a reboot of Amen 2024 with Thelma and The Reverend ❤
Fun fact, Clifton Davis wrote the Jackson 5 hit never can say Goodbye. Later covered by Isaac Hayes and Gloria Gaynor😁
Nice Video. I never watched Amen as much as I did the other 90's shows, maybe an episode here and there, but I loved how shows and social Media have re-created the intro. I know they tried a updated version on the UPN with actress Roz Ryan called Good News, which I really enjoyed.
I'm assuming that the first attempt was flagged by the Carson estate for "unauthorized" usage 😒. Thanks Juicy Pop
Awwww. ❤️❤️This was Saturday night with me, my mom and my sister. Good ole days!!!
Great TV show, I miss those days.
When I was a kid, I used to take the bus to school and ride by that church and I was nicknamed "The Amen Church"🤣💯
The opening to this show is one of my earliest memories lol
Me too
As a kid, I always thought the theme song was sung by Roz Ryan lol smh
Me too!
Anna Maria was correct about the black church. We love our black church as the core of our community. The images had to be on point. Glad you could repost. I wonder who she beat out for the role of Deacon Fye’s daughter Thelma?
I wonder too.
@cindeed4422 . I disagree that the “black “ church is the core of the community!! Church should be the core of the community no matter what the color is!!
This was one of my favorite shows. I’ve been trying to find the complete series on DVD. Maybe I’ll find it someday
I hope you do more stories on Dinosaurs, The Parent'Hood, The Famous Jett Jackson, Felicity, Cuts, My Brother & Me, South Central, Wanda at Large, and Method & Red
❤❤❤loved this, thank you….i used to watch this all the time, when it originally aired then reruns❤❤❤
I sure wished there were still great family shows like this nowadays! This was a great Classic! And I've had the privilege of befriending the 2nd Lionel from The Jefferson! He's such a sweetheart! 😍
What a great show. Amen was the show that gave me church vibes. Also mixing gospel & comedy was a perfect combination in my mind & the fact that it was taken place in Sherman's birthplace of Philadelphia
I still watch Amen on Tubi ❤. I love that show.
1 of My favorite shows ❤❤. Thanks for the memory.

Just watching this again since it was deleted.
Y'all forgot about Countess Vaughn who is on the show for the last couple of seasons.
She was on 227 not Amen
@@andrias.2877 that's right. I got my shows mixed up
Rolly was my Fav😂🤣😂
You forgot to mention Franklyn Seales who was apart of the first season. Besides that great video
My favorite episode with him in it was when he played the minister of music, and everybody was trying to figure out who he had a fling with. Everyone was suspicious of everybody else. It was all about testimony.
@@chrystal0411 😂
Franklyn Seales was also in Silver Spoons!!
I loved when the the Reverend would tell someone “My door is always open,” just as Frye would shut the door in his face. It was pretty clear who Frye saw as the real authority.
I loved this show when I was a kid! I used to love the theme song and, loved Anna Marie Horseford’s character!! Very underrated show!
I’m feelin dis new intro juicy
Did Robin William get his idea of Mrs. Doubtfire from the Swedish nanny I wonder.
I grew up watching this show it was apart of my childhood, I miss it
I loved AMEN. Great ensemble cast. And, yes the actual church is in the Powelton section of West Philadelphia. (Mt Pisgah AME Church on 41st St)❤️
Amos and Andy were not buffoons ❤ 💯
Loved Amen it was wonderful funny and touching. Loved the cast was amazing.
Definitely was a great show❤
Rollie was the funniest guy on the show. And I was friends with a real-life Rollie who was a deacon at a church I used to go to. May he rest in peace. And I had the hots for the big ladies. And 14 years later. I met and married a hot very curvy lady. And 18 years later still together
I have short videos in my phone of them breaking character laughing at Sherman 🤣🤣 or either themselves… I’m in my late 20’s and this show I could watch everyday…
Jester Hairston married Rosetta Lenoire on Family Matters.
"Fletcher" was played by a different actor
He was at the wedding.
This show 📺 was a classic. And the theme song 🎵 is phenomenal
I've recently discovered this show thanks to my job playing it in the breakroom lol. I fell in love! Really good show and I never knew Sherman Hemsley was in another sitcom after "The Jeffersons". Btw Juicy Pop, can you do a video on what happened to 90s R&B singer Shae Jones? She's another one of our singers who has been COMPLETELY forgotten about.
I loved that show growing up and I have enjoyed watching the reruns of the show.
