  • Who would have thought that a show about a prosperous black couple who were able to move on up the socio economic ladder due to the success of their chain of dry cleaners, would go on to become one of the longest-running sitcoms in American history? But it happened. That show, which debuted on CBS on January 18, 1975 and ran until July 2, 1985, was called The Jeffersons.

Sad The Jeffersons didn't even get a series finale. It was so good back in the '70s and early '80s. It's DEFINITELY iconic! Rest in peace to the talents who left behind a MEMORABLE series. God bless Marla Gibbs for being a pioneer in the industry. ❤❤❤❤❤

They changed the time slots 15 times because they wanted the show to fail and lose ratings! I couldn’t keep up with the multiple time & day changes, very frustrating! They didn’t do this to whyte shows that had good ratings! This has been done to other black successful shows too! Norman Lear was disgusting , especially they he fired John Amos on Goid Times! James Evans was the glue that kept that family together! It wasn’t the same after he left, Jimmy Walker never could fill his shoes as the “man of the house “ when they killed off John Amos’ character.

What saved it I think was that it stayed on Sunday nights from 1979-1985. It did change time slots once during then, but not days. And because the syndicated stuff was on during the weekdays, you could watch the older episodes then and then on the night they weren't around, watch a current one, which helped too.

I still watch this show! It is one of the best things about being born in the 70's! Besides loving the depiction of a Black family prospering, I always loved the concept of Tom & Helen! I appreciated that they did not give Helen a 'rescue' story, having been picked and saved by the White man, but made them equal always emphasizing that Helen herself came from a successful Black family and was well - educated with her own work. The fact that they both fought the opposition of both of their families just equalized them more. And in adding this concept to the story, they were tackling additional social issues, killing 2 birds with 1 stone. As a Black woman and just a human wanting fairness and peace for everyone, I always had a tremendous appreciation and respect for Norman Lear's works and efforts.

To this very day, an adult white woman attacked black girl teen and WHITE MEN locked the black child up.. guess whos fighting for the black teen, you guessed it, BLACK MEN..."WELL THEN"

Belinda Tolbert, Jenny Jefferson isn’t the only one of the main cast still alive. Lynn Moody who played Jenny on All In The Family is still with us. The son Alan, played by Jay Hammer, played on the CBS soap Guilding Light. He married the producer Pamela Long Hammer. He’s still alive. And Marla Gibbs is still alive was well. It was a wonderful show to watch growing up in the 70’s.
