The CRAZY Truth About The Jeffersons | Why Was It Canceled? Why No Series Finale?

- Who would have thought that a show about a prosperous black couple who were able to move on up the socio economic ladder due to the success of their chain of dry cleaners, would go on to become one of the longest-running sitcoms in American history? But it happened. That show, which debuted on CBS on January 18, 1975 and ran until July 2, 1985, was called The Jeffersons.

Sad The Jeffersons didn't even get a series finale. It was so good back in the '70s and early '80s. It's DEFINITELY iconic! Rest in peace to the talents who left behind a MEMORABLE series. God bless Marla Gibbs for being a pioneer in the industry. ❤❤❤❤❤
Love the comment but you 🤦🏾♂️
The show at least had 10 years. That's longer than most.

I'm glad Mrs. Gibbs is still with us! May the rest of the cast rest in peace! Such a great show!
Amen Fam; 92 ain't too bad!
The theme song for The Jeffersons will never get old
How much times are we going to hear “not a proper ending” or “abrupt cancellation” when it comes to certain shows while other shows get a heartwarming farewell special and a distinct series finale?!
We see right through these networks. 🧐
Excatly what I was thinking. When they move the time slot around its the beginning of the end for most shows.
The Arsenio Hall Show comes to mind
Not sure what you are implying.
Almost EVERY DAMN TIME 😢
@Detroit_Dawg they're implying that long-running black TV series historically and *mostly* always don't receive proper endings in comparison to long running mostly white TV series... i.e. Family Matters, Girlfriends, Jeffersons, Moesha etc
To not give such an iconic show like this, a series finale is definitely the ultimate hater move. Ok Marla I see you, I give her big props for having a 9-5 and doing this show.
Besides the Jeffersons Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford reprised their roles on two episodes of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air the couples therapy episode and they also appeared on the series finale of the show along with Marla Gibbs
They both appeared on Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman but not as George and Louise.
Isabel Sanford also appeared in sitcoms such as Living Single, Fresh Prince, In the House and The Steve Harvey Show
And the Parker's don't forget she played Niki Parker's mother or grandmother and she was funny on that show as well that was the last time I've saw her alive😢
That Theme Song Is TIMELESS... I Didn't Know Janet Du Bois Sang The Theme Song
That’s crazy that they changed the time 15 times while the show was on the air.
I’m so glad that people continued to watch The Jeffersons even after the multiple time changes
George and Florence's rivalry was hilarious to watch on The Jeffersons
So was Fred and Aunt Esther 😂
They were there originally Martin and Pam lol
Eric Monte who co-created Good Times along with Mike Evans created George and Louise Jefferson. Evans who played Lionel Jefferson approached Monte to come up with a script that feature his character and from there, George and Louise were born.
Florence Is A Smart Woman For Keeping Her Regular Career! Prolly Didn't Want To Participate In Hollyweird's Antics Too.
The people in charge of
the show’s payroll found out,
and doubled what she was making
there for her to quit that job.
But yes,it was very smart for her
to keep her backup job.
Both Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford played Jackie's parents on In the House
Omg I remember that
The Jeffersons have always been my favorite show!
I still watch it now as the themes and plots are still applicable today
The Jeffersons definitely deserved a proper ending it ended on a cliffhanger just like Family Matters, Smart Guy, That's so Raven, One on One, Girlfriends, Moesha, Everybody Hates Chris, and many other shows that also ended on a cliffhanger as well
Smart Guy technically didn't end on a cliffhanger. It ended with Yvette's graduation.
But it felt for a insult. If there is a actual last episode to end on a high, they need to have a meeting, which it was a missed opportunity
“Family Matters” didn’t really end
on a cliffhanger.
They just didn’t show
Steve and Laura’s wedding.
Did Chris ever get his GED?
@@taylor8812 It's just assumed that he did as Chris Rock partially based the series on his life. Also, the scene was shot as an homage to The Sopranos; so, it was supposed to end with a cliffhanger.
The guy Stan from Martin tried to come out and say Sherman was gay , that upset me. They said he was a really nice guy, and that's all that should matters. R.i.p
They totally forgot to mention Ralph The Doorman. He was married to a Black Woman In real life too. He also passed away years ago.
The episode when Lionel kept saying he saying he was life of the party was my favorite
Lionel The Playboy.
the jeffersons deserved so much better, this show was so genuinely funny and im so thankful to my mom for raising me on shows like this, good times, sanford and son and gomer pyle… such good shit
Fun Fact: Mike Evans created and wrote the pitch to the Jefferson's not Norman Lear
I appreciate that you do this detailed research for your videos. I always wondered about certain shows or artists, and when i came across your channel, you've helped answer a lot of my questions. Loving your content!
I bet *_Friends_* didn't change time slots 15x!
They changed the time slots 15 times because they wanted the show to fail and lose ratings! I couldn’t keep up with the multiple time & day changes, very frustrating! They didn’t do this to whyte shows that had good ratings! This has been done to other black successful shows too! Norman Lear was disgusting , especially they he fired John Amos on Goid Times! James Evans was the glue that kept that family together! It wasn’t the same after he left, Jimmy Walker never could fill his shoes as the “man of the house “ when they killed off John Amos’ character.
You should do Thea.
Another excellent video as always 😊
What saved it I think was that it stayed on Sunday nights from 1979-1985. It did change time slots once during then, but not days. And because the syndicated stuff was on during the weekdays, you could watch the older episodes then and then on the night they weren't around, watch a current one, which helped too.
Black shows rarely get a proper sendoff and/or we are not properly portrayed.
Fresh Prince and Martin is a example
I loved the this show I grew up watching it, but it is completely sad that the series was cancelled all of sudden and it was the most watched show ever ,shuffling time periods is nothing new networks did that a lot but what I heard why The Jeffersons got canceled is because some network executive wife was upset about that she couldn’t watch her so called program and because of that The Jeffersons got the boot without even telling cast members and no series finally made.
George and Archi going back and forth was hysterical.
10 year run without a series finale? I didn't realize that.
I still watch this show! It is one of the best things about being born in the 70's! Besides loving the depiction of a Black family prospering, I always loved the concept of Tom & Helen! I appreciated that they did not give Helen a 'rescue' story, having been picked and saved by the White man, but made them equal always emphasizing that Helen herself came from a successful Black family and was well - educated with her own work. The fact that they both fought the opposition of both of their families just equalized them more. And in adding this concept to the story, they were tackling additional social issues, killing 2 birds with 1 stone. As a Black woman and just a human wanting fairness and peace for everyone, I always had a tremendous appreciation and respect for Norman Lear's works and efforts.

All in the Family

#70's forever!!!
One of the best shows on television and they deserved better treatment. I've been watching The Jefferson's recently on Prime and I didn't realize that Isabelle Sanford' was the top billed star, she was 59 years old in season 1. Inspiring cast of characters, every single one of them. Fantastic video @Juicy Pop
Love your content. Please keep it coming!!!
What? No Fresh Prince reference? I'm pretty sure George & Weezy bought the Banks' home in the season finale.
I don't think that was canon.
never watched The Jefferson since it was not in my generation but its definitely another classic ass theme song 🙌🏾
Great job.
Why didn’t you mention Lynne Moody played the original Jenny Willis
She was talking about the main cast
that was on “The Jeffersons”,
and not the ones who came before.
Lynne was also on
“All In The Family”,
not “The Jeffersons”.
Eric Monte has had some strokes as well eric monte created 🔨 louise and george Jefferson chacters however he was never paid or acknowledged mike evans also worked with the jeffersons its sad that they are never giving there proper credits smh

Ironic. I was watching this show last night on Prime.
Sherman Hemsley, was also in an episode of The Incredible Hulk with Bill Bixby, and Lou Ferrigno.
The Jeffersons ended up being the first casualty of Cosbymania.
Actually it was “ Magnum PI” ( CBS) that was “ Cosby’s” / “ Family Ties “( NBC) first casualty in direct competition on Thursday Night’s 1984-86.
1984-85 Thursday Nights 8-9 PM
Bill Cosby Show ( NBC) 8PM
37.4 Million Viewers 24.2 Rating 38 Share Rank 3
Family Ties ( NBC) 8:30 PM
34.2 Million Viewers 22.0 Rating 35 Share Rank 5.
Magnum PI ( CBS) 8-9 PM 30.2 Million Viewers 19.1 Rating 30 Share Rank 15
1985-86
Bill Cosby Show 8 PM ( NBC) 56.1 Million Viewers 33.7 Rating 53 Share Rank 1

52.4 Million Viewers 30.0 Rating 47 Share Rank 2.
Magnum PI 8-9 PM ( CBS)

The Cosby/ Family Ties Locomotive (1985-86 ) absolutely pulverized Magnum PI so bad Magnum PI was moved to a different Night..
Do a video on Good Times! 2:00
The Jeffersons was a classic show that did not and does not get the credit it deserves.

Fun Fact: Norman Lear. Still alive

Such a iconic show. I wish black producers would do this again, make our own things
Norman Lear is the creator and it is not racism
@@lexkanyima2195 shhh
Because the African American Michael Moye didn’t get any respect even though he helped create great series like Married with Children, it’s your move, and silver spoons, as they never got an ending they never deserved as well. Michael was a GREAT writer! I’ll always respect his work.
Married With Children had already a confusing season and it was not Moye's fault
Moye moved to Connecticut and is a scenic photographer.
They should have gotten married in real life. Isabel‘s husband died in 1960 and Sherman never married . They seem to have played the interesting married couple on tv .you know ups and downs of life…
Married with childeren got screwed out of a finally as well. It was on for ten or so years too. Weird how that happens to some of the best shows.
By the last season the show ranked #50 and had about 13.2 people watching.
Interesting that they didn't think after 11 seasons the show might be coming to an end. Guess they felt they would do at least another season and then call it quits or they don't think about that stuff.
I always wonder why the Bunkers didn't do a guest spot in The Jeffersons?
Damon Evans left the show in 1978. For the next season, there was no Lionel on the show.
Lenny Kravitz parents!!
You should interview Eric Lear Mike Evans wrote all of this he was never paid smh just every sad.
Mr. Bently's girlfriend Daphne lives next door to the Gooch.
yo that ending is sad is shit. Every single one of the cast members is dead 😢
Not all, Jenny and Florence still alive
Fun fact: Sherman was a closeted gay man in real life...

Interacial relationships. Who cares? Arent we all human for gods sake? One thing i know is if you find that one person, hold on to them. Be happy. To hell with anybody else. You never know when they will check out. Happened to me. It sucks. But i did love that person with all my heart and thats what counts.
Grew up on the reruns. Loved it. Sang that dam theme song when we moved out of the trailer park and into a piece of sh!t apartment literally on the east side ha ha. Man i miss government cheese. Went great on mac and cheese
MrJefferson in the first seasons is as mean as Lamont Sanford was when Sanford and Son first started...You should binge watch Sanford and Son/ The Jeffersons...great black tv shows that should include Good Times.
Was there an episode of The Jeffersons were Lionel went crazy and had the baby by its collar hanging off of the balcony with Jenny behind him screaming begging and crying and they blurred it back to the present and Jenny was crying saying "... And he dropped him" or did I dream that?
WHAT
Both Gary Coleman and Jaleel White appeared on The Jeffersons. 😎🙏👍🕵
The Willis kids did not appear biracial. NOT THAT IT HAS ONE LOOK.
Biracial kids come in all shades and hair textures. You are saying this because you assume they shouldn’t have brown skin like Jenny’s character. I know plenty of biracial people who look like both characters. 🙄🤷🏾♀️
I guess i can see people in the 70's feeling a certain way about an interracial couple, black women back then were REAL ryders.. fun fact, Roxies marriage ended the same year as the show, which seems to be a pattern with white men marrying white men.. another fun fact, interracial marriages sadly never really changed the racism toward black women. To this very day, an adult white woman attacked black girl teen and WHITE MEN locked the black child up.. guess whos fighting for the black teen, you guessed it, BLACK MEN..."WELL THEN"
11:00 PROPS. Avoided the Big-Time Okie-Doke, 99% of shows would have died in that time slot shuffle. There was definitely something rotten afoot, thankfully thwarted by loyal fans.
7:14,had the roles been reversed, they wouldnt care smdh. Reminds me of my parents❤
Fun fact
All in the Family was a raciest show but I love the Jeffersons
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This isn't the first black show that was doing better than other shows being given poor time slots.
They had solid ratings
" an interracial kiss" being controversial is so ridiculous. Do these complaining idiots not remember I Love Lucy?
You didn't really answer why it was canceled. You just explained that it was canceled and how the cast members found out about it
Marla Gibbs was last seen on "Days Of Our Lives", as Jackee' Harry character's Mother.

I loved this show so much. My parents and I never missed it. Isabel Sanford and Zara Culley, who played Mother Jefferson, got along very well. Isabel said that when they would be getting ready to film a scene, Zara would say, “Oh, dear, now I have to go be mean to you again.” 😊
Paul Benedict also appeared on Sesame Street and he played the judge in the 1991 movie The Addams Family
Real and true props go to the actual creator of The Jeffersons, Eric Monte. The same brilliant, innovative mastermind behind Good Times, What's Happening!?, the Cosby Show, just to name several.
