The DARK Truth About Good Times | John Was Fired? Esther Quit? The Cast Was Jealous of Jimmie?

- Good Times was, for lack of a better word, DY-NO-MITE! It had a DY-NO-MITE cast and a DY-NO-MITE producer. However, behind the scenes, it also had DY-NO-MITE problems. The series aired for six seasons on CBS, from 1974 to 1979. It was created by Eric Monte and Mike Evans and developed by executive producer Norman Lear. The seeds of Good Times were sown several years earlier when another Norman Lear tv production called All in the Family aired for the first time in 1971. People couldn’t get enough of the Bunker family. It was outrageous, groundbreaking and quickly became the number one watched show in the country. It also changed the face of primetime television with a new brand of social and political controversy and made Norman one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood. During the first season of the show, Mike Evans, who appeared as a supporting character, and friend Eric Monte approached Norman with a sitcom concept. It was about a black nuclear family living in a Chicago housing project. Norman loved it.

If John Amos didn’t get fired,
it definitely would have went on for more seasons.
I agree👍🏾💯
Good Times focusing on J.J. was like Family Matters focusing on Steve Urkel
Urkel brought in ratings and was super popular. Was JJ honestly more popular than James Sr?
Ain’t nothing new under the sun
And jimmy walker was clearly the least experienced and least talented cast member
Don't you lump The Ebony Prince in with that nerd
It wasn't the same without John Amos..
I agree 👍🏿💯
I know hindsight is 20/20. But WTF did they think was gonna happen when they fired John Amos ?😕 They killed the show right there.
Agreed but that speaks to the arrogance of the producers.
Keith was able to slap Thelma & JJ & Michael didn't do a DAMN thing! JAMES SR. WOULD NEEEVAAAA
@@sweetwaterwilliams5861 They were in shock and two, it was a big payoff moment when Thelma slapped Ben back!
RIP to Esther Rolle, Ja'Net Dubois, Johnny Brown, Ben Powers, Helen Martin who played Wanda, Norman Lear and Theodore Wilson who played Sweet Daddy Williams
Don't forget Douglas Grant who played characters Sweet Pea and Eddie
Don't forget Dap "Sugar" Willie who played Lootin Lenny who died when he was only 55.
James being killed off has to still be one of the most unexpected TV moments
It is in my opinion. No one thought that would ever happen.
Right
That's when the sitcom plummet
@@KevinPayton-fq8gdthe producers wanted that and when they got it the ratings dropped
@@kittkatt8180 Right. It was still a good show but wasn't the same without John Amos.
The fact that they didn't want her to have a husband tells you everything you need to know about this country. Always trying to paint a negative picture of our community. SICK
Demonic intentions
Facts. Im glad she stuck to her guns too.
Reality is many of us if not the majority of us didn’t have active fathers in those projects. Therefore really it wasn’t portraying a negative picture but reality.
@@Keziah1979in that era, it wasn’t the majority. Folks weren’t having babies out of wedlock either, communities stuck together, and took pride in the little they had.. those on welfare had to keep the fathers out of the house, but it was already known the fathers just removed all their belongings until the unannounced pop up was over.
The storyline of Penny's abuse actually brought me to tears. The scared emotions that Janet Jackson displayed on the show was heartbreaking.
Yes it was.
Kim Fields also appeared on Good Times as Penny's best friend Kim
Kim's real-life mom, Chip Fields played Penny's mom.
Fun Fact: And so did Gary Coleman . All three: Kim Fields, Janet Jackson and Gary Coleman appeared together on a Good Times episode. And all three also appeared on Different Strokes at one time.
I don’t know the episode but it was when Florida returned driving the school bus.
The Good Times theme song never gets old
*When "James Evans" died, the show died as well* 😢
I always wonder how the show would have ended if they never let James go. He was a hardworking father and husband and he deserved his happy ending with his family, but never got the chance to see his family make it out of the ghetto.
James Evans was a real Black man like my dad, my uncles and men just my neighborhood. He was the glue and just like with society if there is no father in the home, life gets harder.
Fun Fact: Eddie Murphy bought the painting.
They took away the head of the household and the show never recovered‼️
THEY NEVER WANTED A HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD!..THEY NEVER WANTED A BLACK SOLID FAMILY UNIT
It sounds like everything behind the scenes was anything but Good Times. No need for a remake, the show ended on a good note.
I Could Understand The Stances Of The John Amos and The Late Great Esther Rolle. However Jimmie Walker Was A Comedian, That Was His Job! Hollywood Could Be COLD and Cruel. Good Times Was Golden. Norman Lear Is A THIEF. Let’s Give Eric Monte His Flowers. He’s Still Among The Living.
Exactly
John looked way older than 34, however he aged very well
Wow, this show is literally 50 years old lmao.
Praying you do the show Hangin with Mr. Cooper with Mark Curry and The Parent ‘Hood starring Robert Townsend and the late Suzzanne Douglas 🕊️.
Both are on my list. Stay tuned!😉
@@JuicyPopEntertainment I cannot wait
@@JuicyPopEntertainment5:00 wow 😮😳.
I'm bingeing on the Parenthood on Tubi😇😇❣❣🙏🙏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
When they killed James I stopped watching it because Moses Gunn couldn’t replicate James . It’s a shame that he didn’t bring him back
The Wayans Bros's episode Unspoken Token paid homage to Good Times
I loved it
A lot of black sitcoms like to mock Esther Rolle when she said, Damn, Damn, Damn.
Yep.
And Ja’Net,who was already playing
their grandmother,reprised her
Willona role,Johnny Brown
(Bookman)came,
and Bernadette Stanis(Thelma).
I own Good Times dvd set. I've bought it when I was moving out of my parents' house and when I had to wait for my internet provider to come. I've watched the series for 1 week of no tv and internet. Glad I bought it!!
They screwed up when they fired John Amos.....
It was a big mistake letting him go from the show
The Episode when James died was sooo sad...and the first time Penny was on...😢
The episode with Gary Coleman was awesome
Gary Coleman made 2 appearances on Good Times.
One of my fav shows ever! Rest in peace to all who have transitioned.
Sometimes an unexpected break out star happens, I hate that so many people act like JJ being liked was some terrible thing. He was the balance to an otherwise heavy drama.
The music video for Camp Lo's song Black Nostaljic paid homage to Good Times as well
"Hangin in and jivin." Now that's a lyric with ambition.
Janet will be Esther's age in May when they first worked together on Good Times. The oldest actor on the show. 😅😊
It’s sad that they wanted ester roll to be a single mother. This was one of the best shows ever. When John left the show for cheesy.
The addition of Carl was the dumbest idea ever.
And to an extent,
Keith’s addition was dumb as well.
(Especially when he did those voices.)
@@jaylene.turner6524 that's right keith (ben powers) was a dumb iidea after he slapped Thelma.
Fun Fact: The age difference between John Amos and Jimmy Walker is very similar to Phylicia Rashad and Sabrina Le Beauf on The Cosby Show. Despite portraying the oldest daughter on the show, Sabrina is actually ten years younger than Phylicia in real life.
All I remember about this show was for some reason I always caught the episode after James died and Florida slamming down that glass punch bowl screaming damn, damn, damn. It wasn’t like I did that on purpose either, it just always was at that episode whenever I caught it in syndication. 🥴
I actually had the pleasure of meeting johnamos, he came to my school a couple of times.
Happy 50th anniversary to Good Times!!
Never tell those devils your ideas
I LOVED this show! I remember as a child in the 1970s, but then they ran it on syndication again when I was an adult. It never got old
Good morning 🌞 and thanks. While I watched this as i got older, i saw how JJ took over with his silly antics.
Good morning!☀Thanks for watching!
@@JuicyPopEntertainment4:08 You're welcome 🤗😁.
You gotta do Sanford and son and what's happening next.
Good Times:CBS Classic…..still in my RUclips tv list to this day…. Happy 50th Anniversary Good Times…..
They did Eric dirty

@@JuicyPopEntertainment4:32 💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃nice 👍🙂.
Forever a TV institution, Good Times🤟🏾! Great video as well!
Good Times holds a special place in my heart. Yes, it was filled with stereotypes but there were a lot of Black people who identified with the show like my grandmother.
Comedian Jay Leno made his debut on Good Times as Jimmy Walker was friends with Leno and David Letterman. Look how their careers turned out! I loved the episode The Rent Party and the talent show episodes.
Wow...didn't know Norman Lear just passed! 101...
I hope all of the surviving cast are doing good ♥️🙏
Your research is impeccable.I'm probably on my 6 video right now. This is very interesting.Thank you for your research
This is hands down one if the best channels on RUclips and the narrator is top tier.🎉🎉🎉
Great story on Good Times
❤❤❤
@@JuicyPopEntertainment2:38 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️yes.
Good Times is my all time favorite sitcom & it’s the most realistic & influential sitcom of all time. Get we please get stories on the following sitcoms:
Julia
That’s My Momma
Sanford & Son
What’s Happening
Grady
Id vote no on Grady. It didnt even last a full season. Just 10 episodes. But YES on TMM. I loved Theodore Wilson. He was such a fun actor. He met his wife on that show. Passed away too soon to me.
John Amos was the only one that had real comedic timing which made Good Times funny.
I feel that Norman Lear did John Amos(James) dirty. Smh
Honorable mention a few actors/actresses(Chip Fields was 1 of them) appeared on the show playing different roles
Wow to me I feel like Good Times and Family Matters both had a similar situation. Esther Rolle had an issue with Jimmy Walker's charater JJ Evans and Jo Marie Payton had an issue with Jaleel White's charater Steve Urkel. John Amos wanted better for the show because he got tired of playing the poor black man trying to make it and want it better for his family. That's why he was frustrated with the producers and gave them a piece of his mind which caused him to be fired from the show. All in all good times it's a classic BTW Happy 50th Anniversary Good Times which still comes on TV One.
Good Times is in my top 10 favorite shows of all time. I could laugh like I never seen the episode (even though I did)
We need one the Wayans bros!
Thank you so much! 🌹🌹
Love these behind the scenes of the good TV shows and movies
Thx for this info ❤
Prayers for John Amos 🙏
Loving your videos
Hanging in a what???? Sounds like the narrator said,"hanging in angina"😂😂😂😂
Hey juicy pop do you know that Sinbad had his own show I actually watched it one time but forgot all about it but on the Internet is said he only made one season can you explain to us why he did not make a second season?
5:37 I miss good 💯😊 times.
6:00 love 💕😘 that show.
My favorite character was JJ and my least was Florida. She had no hustle when it came to feeding that family only oatmeal. Amos was smart to leave that hapless ghetto family. My mother had 16 kids and we were never that poor.
Love the channel and videos!
❤❤❤
@@JuicyPopEntertainment3:28 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️lovely 😍🌹.
Kinda surprised it wasn't mentioned in this video, but did anyone used to notice JJ would sometimes be seen talking to himself while another cast member would be talking? I think sometimes he'd even be repeating their lines, but you can see his mouth moving.
One of the best hood shows all time growing up in the 1970s 1.Good Times 2.Welcome Back Khotter 3.Sanford And Son 4.The White Shadow
I get John Amos being frustrated with the direction of the show same thing happened with Meredith Baxter on Family Ties; that was a vehicle for her and it became all about the character of Alex P. Keaton. Not to say Michael J. Fox isn’t awesome, but Family Ties didn’t end up being the show that it was originally supposed to be.
...some OTHER trivia tidbits I'd like to add about "Good Times", if I may, Juicy Pop....(cont.)
- ...Wilona was originally going to be a "Lady Of The Evening" (living next Door) to explain the age difference to Florida; another Older actress was going to play Florida's BFF, but got replaced by Ja'Net, which made Esther mad....but, BOTH Actresses nixed that idea, and Norman agreed.....
- ...Bernadette (as 'Thelma') was TV's *FIRST* Black Teen Girl...EVER; She opened the Doors to Janet Jackson, Kim Fields, Lark Voorhies, Brandy, Tatyana Ali, Lisa Bonet, Tempset Bledsoe, and MANY others.....
- Ralph Carter ('Michael') actually is Disco's first (charting) Male 'Disco Divo'...he had 2 Top Ten Disco hits ("Young & In Love", #10 Disco, & "Extra Extra", #5 Disco) in 1975, giving him the FIRST back-to back (charting) Disco hits by a Man....BEFORE Barry White!
- JAY LENO was One the head writers for the Show (along with David Letterman), who sprung off to Comedian work, then their respected TV Evening Talk Shows......
- ..."Good Times" actually was cancelled Jan., 1979 (for a March '79 end date), but due to a strike & pre-empted Shows, it got a Summer airing to 'burn off' the (pre-taped) Episodes.....and finally ended, when CHIC's "Good Times" was the #1 Song in the Country (August 1979)!
- ...and, although this was mentioned at a 00's College appearance that wasn't taped...It was said that the Episode "Stomach Mumps" had to be re-taped, because there was actual filmed footage of Penny's 'confrontation' (by a Young male actor)....but the audience got SO riled, they were drowning out the Mic's sound pickup and they had to escort to Male Actor out of the Studio, for his SAFETY!
Jay Leno appeared on an episode of Good Times. The name of the episode is J.J. in Trouble. J.J. thought he caught a STD from a girl that he once dated .
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc ...yep...I was going to mention the Episode, because it remains the 1st show dealing with the topic of the 'Vee-Dee' ....."What's Happening" has a similar Ep, but "Good Times" was the FIRST....
We should havevknow they wanted him out the picture because never let him move up for a better job lear finally got what he wanted in the first place
This sounds like a similar situation to Family Matters as JJ was like the Urkel of the show and turned it from serious to comedic.
And all the side characters he kept playing
GOOD TIMES was one of my favorite shows. James is the best 'tv Dad' ever because he was whom I wish my Dad was. If they keep the politics outta tv and let the audience contribute their ideas then tv would be possibly great again.
A lot of inside stuff happened but all of them still played tneir parts well.
"Temporary lay off'ssss..good timesss"😮😮,"Scratching&Survivinggg"...GOOD TIMESS😮😮🎉
I didn't know jimmie walker originally was suppose to be the scarecrow from the wiz but michael jackson (R.I.P.) was the right pick for scarecrow.
Neva heard of any show Named "Maude".
5:08 -13:00 Now it ALL Makes sense.
14:06 -15:49 Nooo!
Honestly, stories like these make me appreciate Seinfeld more. He didn't care that the other actors were getting the limelight for a show that he was the star of. He really just wanted to make the funniest show possible even if the best lines/scenes were given to others.
Dynamite 😂
Eric monte wrote for the good times' cast. Lear meant to kill the dad part.
I love this recurring photo of Norman Leer looking like an a-hole laid back with that grin 😂
Other actors and actresses who appeared in Good Times also appeared on other Norman Lear tv sitcoms. Not only that, Redd Foxx also had issues with Norman Lear behind the scenes of Sanford & Son. Come to think of it, I'd like to see another Juicy Pop video of other Norman Lear tv sitcoms Sanford & Son, Silver Spoons, One Day at a Time, The Facts of Life, etc
Demond Wilson(Lamont)
did a recent interview on Norman Lear,
and he didn’t hold back
his feelings to say the least.
@@jaylene.turner6524 I'd like to see that
That’s so sad how those writers just really write out the main leads that the show was written for what’s crazier is that some shows are still doing that to this day
In the same vain, does anyone else believe that Family Matters could/would have been a much better show if they did not go crazy with Urkel the way they did? I think Harriette could have carried the show, it would have been different. Sure but it would had a better flow, I think
I never watched s9 of FM
Eddie Murphy bought the “Good Times” painting
Ok so I've been bingeing and I've come to the conclusion that this Pop is NOT Juicy!😆 It's more like sparkling water!😂😂😂But it's nicely presented surface info about some of my favorite subjects so ...still subbed!
Someone needs to create a Good Times Lego Ideas set!
The only thing I liked from this show was Janet. I was crushing on her as a kid, and still crushing on her as a grown ass man, lol
What about thema what wrong with her so you telling me she's not all that
Love Good Times
The actor who played JJ is a jerk in real life.
Well, damn! 😬
What did he do to you?
How?🫤
Jimmie Walker is a Trump supporter and he doesn't like to acknowledge his fans.
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc because he being tired of being criticize
I knew the shows ratings started to decline after james left cause james made the show
Norman Lear looked like Wes Craven before he died
After a few years of the show, I became disguised with the JJ character and a few others. I matured and was burnt out by the blaxploitation movies of the 70s. JJ, George Jefferson, and Archie Bunker were the worst examples of three different classes of men. Jimmy Walker did only himself a favor with that character but supplied no real good example for young black men.
Its hanging in a chow line, one of the cast already cleared that up.
Big John dont age
Damn man, 34 in the 70’s was crazy.
John amos wasn't the heart and soul of good times!!! Clown Jimmie walker and beautiful bernadette made the sitcom funny with their arguments without them no show!!!!
The Good Times cartoon on Netflix is hideous. Absolutely horrendous.
That was a duplicate painting that sold for 15 million dollars. Eddie Murphy has the original, he got it from the Marvin Gay estate when he passed away
I met Ms. Bern Nadette Stanis a few years ago and she looks amazing. Beautiful skin, hair, etc. She was so night. I could barely speak because I was sooo starstruck 🖤
OAN: My little brother and coworkers always said they didn't like this show and knew it was created about a bunch of Caucasians. Because it was everything but good. Whenever something positive was about to take place for the Evans' family, it never went through.
Whats the beat in the beginning of this video???
