  • 227 debuted on NBC on September 14, 1985 and ran for five seasons before going off the air on May 6, 1990. The show followed the lives of people in a middle-class apartment building, 227 Lexington Place, in Northeast, Washington, D.C. It was centered around Mary Jenkins, her husband, Lester, played by Hal Williams, who had his own construction company, and their daughter, Brenda, played by Regina King in her first television acting role, who was a smart and studious teen but still enjoyed getting into all the things that kids her age typical do.

      I would have been proud to have a show stealer on my hands. Because I would want people to know I discovered her. You can't always be the star. Sometimes it's better to be the star maker.

      @madddoggnogood1491 10 месяцев назад +4

      @@alberthenley2988 in practice that sounds good but it's like with family matters......the shows premise was supposed to be one thing but because one character became so popular he became the star of the show. Harriet was supposed to be the star of family matters but she went from starring to a supporting role.
      Everyone has an ego and that had to be a tough pill for her because here Harriet is with her own spin-off show but then this kid unintentionally steals it from her..same thing with 227 . This is supposed to be a family driven show bit all anyone cares about Jackee.
      Some veteran actors resent younger actors. Look at the first aunt Viv and Will Smith . She was jealous of will because he wasn't a trained actor, he was a rapper and here he was with his own show while she been grinding for decades .
      Not saying she was right because the show was about him.....but she resented him

    This is was awesome video on 227! However, you forgot to mention the Sheryl Lee Ralph connection? Originally, the network executives wanted Sheryl to play the part of Sandra Clarke. However, Marla Gibbs thought Sheryl was too sophisticated for the role. When Jackee came in and auditioned for Sandra, Gibbs knew she WAS the one to pull it off because of her comedic timing. When Marla Gibbs appeared on the Sherri Show last year, she talked this but wouldn't mention the name of actress. However, Jackee did on her Instagram page the night when Sheryl Lee Ralph won the Emmy for her role on Abbott Elementary. Jackee said: " this is a full circle moment! Sheryl is the 2nd African American female to win an Emmy 35 years later. I was the 1st. Originally the NBC executives wanted Sheryl to play Sandra but, Marla fought for me and I ended in the role and won an Emmy in 1987. I'm so happy for Sheryl "

    People keep saying the child actors who "disappeared" from casts like "Tiffany" were unlucky, their parents missed a huge opportunity. I think differently. I think they avoided Hollyweird catastrophe oftentimes. These children see and experience things in that satanic place that imoact them through adulthood. Huge success doesn't equal happiness.

    ....I'm Old (63), so I can give some accounts watching that CLASSIC Show, when it debuted, Sept., 1985 ..... (cont.)
    1. ...Jackee SERIOUSLY bridged the gap with Whites watching "Black"-themed TV Shows; they were tuning in for HER, but stayed, to watch the Cast....and, Gay Men LOOOOVED "Sandra", regardless of race.... (5:05) ...and, they KNEW of the behind-the scenes accounts.....
    2. ....It was THIS scene, that shot the show into the stratosphere....(7:01) ....EASILY....my favorite scene though, was when Brenda got a job, and saw how MUCH they take out (after taxes), in her 1st check... ".....WHO'S 'FICA', and why is he takin' all my MONEY!???" ...ha-HAAA!!
    3. ....and speaking of 'Brenda'.....NO-ONE thought Regina King would go on to greatness....N-O One!! ....It's a true testament to hanging in there, honing your craft, & gettin' those FLOWERS.....
    4. ....VERY SMART move, keeping 'Lester' (3:18) ...it became a RARE instance, showing a True "BLACK LOVE" on the small screen.....
    5. ....that last (5th) Season, was *ABYSMAL* ....there are certain Shows, where One 'acts' as if it NEVER existed; THAT Season, was One of them....Toukie!? ...STONEY!!??? *...NO......*
    ....ONE BONUS, though....when Kim Fields appeared on an Episode (playing a shy Girl who gets a makeover by Sandra), and becomes a Vamp....ta-DAAA!! "Regine" (from "Living Single"), was BORN.... ...a CLASSIC 80's Show....
