- 227 debuted on NBC on September 14, 1985 and ran for five seasons before going off the air on May 6, 1990. The show followed the lives of people in a middle-class apartment building, 227 Lexington Place, in Northeast, Washington, D.C. It was centered around Mary Jenkins, her husband, Lester, played by Hal Williams, who had his own construction company, and their daughter, Brenda, played by Regina King in her first television acting role, who was a smart and studious teen but still enjoyed getting into all the things that kids her age typical do.

RIP to Alaina Reed Hall, Kevin Peter Hall, Paul Winfield, Helen Martin and Reynaldo Rey
Reynaldo Rey too.
😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️
Mary was always so nasty to Rey.
Paul Winfield was a great actor. The role of Julian was beneath him.
Marla Gibbs, Hal Williams, Curtis Baldwin, Jackee Harry and Regina King all deserve their roses
I think they have
What about Alaina Reed? You just omitted her.
Marla Gibbs did her thing for the theme song for 227!! Marla Gibbs definitely deserves her roses!! She can act and sing
👏🏾
Yes. I liked that episode when all 4 ladies sung Girl talk and the blues episode when Brenda broke grandpa’s record.
Yes. I know this is about 227, but she was funny as hell on the Jeffersons.
I absolutely loved this show, my fav episode was the Christmas special with the temptations
That's her singing the song?
Jackee Harry earned that Emmy because she was so good playing Sandra. The original premise may have been about the Jenkins Family, but Sandra was definitely the scene stealer.
She was like urkel.
I would have been proud to have a show stealer on my hands. Because I would want people to know I discovered her. You can't always be the star. Sometimes it's better to be the star maker.
@@alberthenley2988 in practice that sounds good but it's like with family matters......the shows premise was supposed to be one thing but because one character became so popular he became the star of the show. Harriet was supposed to be the star of family matters but she went from starring to a supporting role.
Everyone has an ego and that had to be a tough pill for her because here Harriet is with her own spin-off show but then this kid unintentionally steals it from her..same thing with 227 . This is supposed to be a family driven show bit all anyone cares about Jackee.
Some veteran actors resent younger actors. Look at the first aunt Viv and Will Smith . She was jealous of will because he wasn't a trained actor, he was a rapper and here he was with his own show while she been grinding for decades .
Not saying she was right because the show was about him.....but she resented him
@@madddoggnogood1491Jackee made 227, while there need to added roles
@@madddoggnogood1491your explanation is ABSOLUTELY accurate and well put Babe!!!... thanks for sharing 👍🏿❤️💐
Marla Gibbs and Sherman Hemsley got a second life with their respective NBC shows Marla Gibbs "227" and Sherman Hemsley "Amen"😊❤💯📺
And that episode in season 3 ("The Big Deal") that is a top 5 episode of the show. And it ain't #5. I can watch that episode over and over again, and got right into George and Florence mode lol. The favor was returned when Jackee guest starred on _Amen_ as two characters: one a love interest of the Deacon and Thelma's old high school friend.
I watched Amen as a kid when it used to come on NBC…. but as an adult….. I watched it on Tubi…. 😣 boy what a difference ….constantly hearing the drawn out version of “Reuben” or “Daddy” was insufferable
@@DavidRichardson95 That episode was hilarious George did his dance and tore it up!!! and Jackee did her thing on Amen as well!
"Apple pie??? We never *used* apple pie!!" Best line ever! 😂😂😂
That line was VERY RISQUE for the 80's. 😮
Yesss!! I’m so glad you’re covering 227! The start of the iconic Regina King’s career ❤️❤️. This show was amazing too with Jackee playing Sandra, the stylish and always searching for a man diva.
Marla Gibbs deserves her flowers too. Also, RIP to the great Helen Martin and Mary’s friend and next door neighbor lol.
Alaina Reed (Mary's friend Rose)
Regina King is DEFINITELY one of the most successful former child stars of all time! Marla Gibbs is a GIFTED pioneer. I'll NEVER forget how Jamie Foxx was almost moved to tears when Miss Gibbs made a surprise appearance on the live updated episode of The Jeffersons in 2019. ❤
Just like almost every TV show it just amazes me how grown-ass people just can never get along

227 was a great show. Jackeé was the main reason I watched. I’m surprised she didn’t like her character. She played it well.
All of them played a family & friends very well.
Jackee was the main reason I watched it also.Jackee was so-FINE-and-SEXY-back then. LOL. Plus, them curves too.
@@user-be7tc2bd6e Yes indeed! My sister was a bad mamma jamma!
@@nataliemscrzysxycoolharris Yes,she was. Jackee was also channelling Mae West in her character also.
I remember the last season when they started adding all the new people. I had a feeling we were going to lose 227 but one show I was thrilled about. It was Brenda stealing Mary’s history paper. I’m an NE4Lifer (New Edition Fan) so of course The Bobby Brown episode will always be one of my favorites. We were glued to the set that night. ❤
That episode always made me laugh because Pearl said she mistook Bobby Brown for Calvin😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I always thought Calvin looked like Bobby Brown so it was funny hearing her say that and knowing it wasn’t just me!!!!!
@@Fueunachimba 😂😂😂😂
The last season was the end of a era it was obvious
@@lexkanyima2195 It was dry. Only good episodes from that season were when Gary Coleman guest starred as Mr. Big holding everybody hostage until Travis came back with the $27k he found in his limo, Bobby Brown and Luther Vandross when Rose finally got married to Warren in the two-part episode when the residents went to Atlantic City and the final episode where Mary dreams, she is homeless after treating a homeless man poorly.
@@DavidRichardson95 out of nowhere
A time when television was simply marvelous.
This is was awesome video on 227! However, you forgot to mention the Sheryl Lee Ralph connection? Originally, the network executives wanted Sheryl to play the part of Sandra Clarke. However, Marla Gibbs thought Sheryl was too sophisticated for the role. When Jackee came in and auditioned for Sandra, Gibbs knew she WAS the one to pull it off because of her comedic timing. When Marla Gibbs appeared on the Sherri Show last year, she talked this but wouldn't mention the name of actress. However, Jackee did on her Instagram page the night when Sheryl Lee Ralph won the Emmy for her role on Abbott Elementary. Jackee said: " this is a full circle moment! Sheryl is the 2nd African American female to win an Emmy 35 years later. I was the 1st. Originally the NBC executives wanted Sheryl to play Sandra but, Marla fought for me and I ended in the role and won an Emmy in 1987. I'm so happy for Sheryl "
Kevin Peter Hall was the Predator in the very first movie before he passed away. RIP ❤
it cant be understated how big jackee got. after the a-team was cancelled, jackee harry kind of became the unofficial spokesperson for NBC. she was in all the commercials. networks used to do fall tv preview specials. jackee would host them. she was everywhere.
Well she was a plan b
And she should've hosted _SNL_ she could've been the first black female host of the '80s. Cicely Tyson was the _first_ black woman to host _SNL_ (1979) and during that time they had only had a few black regulars (Garrett Morris, Eddie Murphy, Yvonne Hudson, Danitra Vance and Damon Wayans) with one major exception (Eddie Murphy) blowing up at the same damn time.
Yea she was huge within the network at that time, running promos, doing commercials, she was everywhere
Bullying is a serious issue, even in the entertainment industry. How can we ensure a safe and respectful working environment for all actors, especially when it comes to child actors like Alexandira?
Yessss so true!! That was DISGUSTING
227 had a great cast! I heard about Helen Martin berating Countess Vaughn on set to other cast members.
227 and Cosby Show are the two of the best African American family based sitcoms of all time- bar none!!!
I'm so glad Jackee called that female cast member an old &&&&&. LOL.Priceless and hilarious at the same time.
NBC had it made at that time! Aside from the aforementioned, I'd add A Different World to the mix. ❤
@@user-be7tc2bd6eI believe Jackee wholeheartedly too. This reminds me of Jackee's character in the OUTSTANDING miniseries The Women of Brewster Place where she went off on an older nosy neighbor who disrespected her. 😂
@@danavixen6274 A Different World was on a whole another level than 227,black people started attending HBCU universities like-CRAZY !!! Plus ADW was drawing a bigger audience than The Cosby Show ( and the Cosby Show's audience was 80% white )go figure. LOL.
@@danavixen6274 I think A Different World is a top 3 AA tv show of all time but it wasn't a family based show like Cosby Show and 227. It was a college based show.
Thank you so much for saying it was more of a comedy first. As someone who wasn't the target audience, I NEVER saw "227" as a black comedy. This with Golden Girls and Amen were my Saturdays. The characters were relatable, and I had a terrible crush on Sandra as a little boy. Thanks for covering this.
Yes, I agree I'm 47 and I remember when my family and I used to watch: The Facts Of Life, 227, The Golden Girls and Amen on Saturday nights during the mid to late 80s. I'm so glad I grew up on these shows!

It’s a shame.
Marla Gibbs now plays Jackie’s Mom on DAYS OF OUR LIVES now, and Jackie’s character lives in apartment 227. So cute.
That's right Jackie you told Hellen off 🤣 you was the star ⭐⭐⭐ on the show ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I totally believe those stories. Helen Martin just gives the vibe of a hating old bitty which is so unnecessary because they all had significant roles in the show, and they all played their roles really well!!!!

I love watching this show growing up. Marla Gibbs always reminded me of my Aunt (my mom’s sister) she always spoke her mind and takes no mess. She’s in her 70s and still the same way lol
I used to watch _Sister, Sister_ as a youngin' until my mom brought me a season 1 DVD of _227_ for Christmas 18 years ago (I was 10) and discovered where Jackee originated from and did research over the years and realized she was a ginormous star in the '80s. I became a fan of _227_ from that point on. Seasons 1 to 3 (and 4) are top notch quality.
Besides 227 Kia Goodwin later went on to star in the HBO movie Strapped alongside Fredro Starr, Bokeem Woodbine, Chi-Ali, Isaiah Washington and Busta Rhymes
Yes Great movie
I loved that movie
@nesoldier74 also in the movie was Starletta Dubois ,YoYo,Kool Moe Dee,Monie Love ,Jermaine Hopkins, and Sticky Fingaz
I still watch this every single 227 is one of my all-time favorites along with good times different strokes I'm an 80s baby I don't watch any new shows I hardly go on the internet I'm stuck in between 80s
It’s funny that you covered 227. I recently started watching it on Hulu every night at bedtime. I never completed my dvd set back in the day. I remember watching it Saturday nights with my mom while my older sisters got to hang out. I’m the baby. 😂 So many good memories. I was crushing on Calvin and trying to style my hair like Brenda. It’s one of my favorite shows. Thanks. ❤
I’ve been enjoying seeing Jackee on the soap opera Days of our lives and Marla Gibbs plays her mother!
Yes yes and the room number that Jackee was staying in was 227 a nod to the original series run
This was a great video. It's angering that they didn't want the black women in those shows to have a man in the house. It was the same with Good Times.
Regina King's sister was on What's Happening Now. I'm ready for them to do a video on Amen.
I used to watch reruns of this show nonstop on Up TV network 😙 I loved Ssssandra Clark! 😂😂 reminds me of me 🙃😉
Helen Martin and her mustache had a lot of nerve coming for anybody’s looks and a child no less.
That Helen Martin was a nasty piece work.
Great story on 227
For those who don't know, Jackee Harry can be seen on, as of this writing, "Days of Our Lives" and the tea of Michael G. Moye-- good gracious. I heard about Helen Martin fussing/taking about Countess a few years ago. Didn't know about Jackee telling Helen off--served mean Helen right!
I always thought it was Jackee that said something about Countess, I guess I was misinformed. What did she really have to say about a child?
Hey, you should pull up " Hey Qween, Jackee " on here! Jackee goes into details about that incident with Helen Martin. Jackee also called her an "old B" to her face. She had me rollin!😅
@@Meka-TeeMartin talked about Countess' weight. There's a video of it here on RUclips. Pull up " Countess Vaughn 227". You'll hear her talk about it but, she won't mention Helen's name.

“Funny You Should Ask”.
I love that you’re talking about sitcoms too. I love this show. Great piece, usual. Same with Living Single and Sister Sister. 🥳 I’m so glad Marla fought to have a husband in the show.

@@JuicyPopEntertainment4:42 You're welcome.
People keep saying the child actors who "disappeared" from casts like "Tiffany" were unlucky, their parents missed a huge opportunity. I think differently. I think they avoided Hollyweird catastrophe oftentimes. These children see and experience things in that satanic place that imoact them through adulthood. Huge success doesn't equal happiness.
Agree . I always appreciate the ones who reach adult hood and run for the hills leaving Hollywood behind as they grow older even if it means living in a trailer.

Stoney Jackson ayyee where he at
....I'm Old (63), so I can give some accounts watching that CLASSIC Show, when it debuted, Sept., 1985 ..... (cont.)
1. ...Jackee SERIOUSLY bridged the gap with Whites watching "Black"-themed TV Shows; they were tuning in for HER, but stayed, to watch the Cast....and, Gay Men LOOOOVED "Sandra", regardless of race.... (5:05) ...and, they KNEW of the behind-the scenes accounts.....
2. ....It was THIS scene, that shot the show into the stratosphere....(7:01) ....EASILY....my favorite scene though, was when Brenda got a job, and saw how MUCH they take out (after taxes), in her 1st check... ".....WHO'S 'FICA', and why is he takin' all my MONEY!???" ...ha-HAAA!!
3. ....and speaking of 'Brenda'.....NO-ONE thought Regina King would go on to greatness....N-O One!! ....It's a true testament to hanging in there, honing your craft, & gettin' those FLOWERS.....
4. ....VERY SMART move, keeping 'Lester' (3:18) ...it became a RARE instance, showing a True "BLACK LOVE" on the small screen.....
5. ....that last (5th) Season, was *ABYSMAL* ....there are certain Shows, where One 'acts' as if it NEVER existed; THAT Season, was One of them....Toukie!? ...STONEY!!??? *...NO......*
....ONE BONUS, though....when Kim Fields appeared on an Episode (playing a shy Girl who gets a makeover by Sandra), and becomes a Vamp....ta-DAAA!! "Regine" (from "Living Single"), was BORN.... ...a CLASSIC 80's Show....
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I think Regina king has a really good agent. She was in most black movies never really on TV. I was surprised Curtis Baldwin career never took off. He stopped acting all together. Countess Vaugn’s career took off really good too. She did a lot of black tv sitcoms like the Parker’s.
Jackee Harry's spin-off Jackee should've gotten picked up. Another show that Jackee Harry was in that never got picked up which became Hannah Montana. It was on the That's so Raven episode Goin Hollywood and the episode was supposed to be a possible spin-off with Alyson Stoner, Allie Grant, Jackee Harry, Skyler Samuels and Scout Taylor Compton
Wow! I didn't know that.
Jackee was also slated to replace Delta Burke in Designing Women, but it was decided that her personality was too over-the-top and that idea was scrapped. I also read that actress Dixie Carter did not like her.
