    1) Am i doing everything in the music? (Dynamics, articulation markings, words)
    2) Rule of thumb, use vibrato more often
    3) Generally, use more bow
    4) Find a true legato
    5) Try the harder fingering (explore positions; shifting positions will level up your playing)
    6) Make your own music (how can i make this phrase more beautiful? how can I put my own spin on this?)

    Hi! Traditional (Irish fiddle) player here! I've only recently started playing classical as I've joined orchestra, what's a legato? 😅😅

      Haha great question! Legato just means playing smooth and connected… trying to mask bow changes and create the smoothest, most connected line you can :)

    Liz, all good stuff. I'm a violinist that played heavily until I was 18, then set my violin aside to live life, and recently, after almost fifty years, picked it up again I might add one more suggestion. you touched on with your "use more bow" suggestion. That would be practice bow control. You also mentioned this concept when you talked about the forced swells when working out bowings. Lighten the pressure as you approach the frog. Increase pressure on the bow as you bow towards the tip. At times violins will sing more when you lighten bow pressure. As I'm coming back, after only four months of playing, its made a big difference in my tone. All your ideas are great. Good luck with your channel!

    I will be graduating high school but me and the violin have gone so far back as elementary but yet still, I am terrible with the violin. I've always felt so envious of people who could properly play the violin, I plan to learn the violin after high school, which will allow me more the time to play the violin, but I'm tired of being terrible at the violin. Anyone else feel this way?

    Hello! I’m an upcoming 9th grader and I got placed in the most top orchestra. I want to practice all summer and try to be concertmaster. Do you have any tips on to do that, not to compare yourself, and to achieve lots of improvement?

    • @TheFeelGoodViolinClub
      @TheFeelGoodViolinClub  3 года назад +10

      Wow, congrats!! That’s an awesome achievement ☺️ I would say- stay focused on yourself! Comparing yourself to others takes energy that could be better spent staying focused and attentive to your own development. Try only being competitive with yourself. It also helps to get very precise about how you want to sound. Like, what specifically draws you to your favorite violinists? Also- everyone loves a musical player, so if you can, be expressive! Good luck!

    Hi Liz, Good tips! I have been playing for 2 years now, just learning from online materials. I have been trying to develop vibrato for a couple months but I have a small problem with my hand letting go the violin neck. . Good luck with your channel. Don't quit keep posting videos. It takes time to get somewhere on RUclips right now.

    • @TheFeelGoodViolinClub
      @TheFeelGoodViolinClub  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for your nice comment!! It’s common to sort of lose grip against the neck when starting vibrato- maybe because we get so focused on that one finger. Try keeping just a gentle connection with the thumb. That’s really the only contact you need, other than the finger you’re vibrating. I’ll start posting again soon- thanks for the encouragement!

    Hi Liz, thank you for sharing your musical knowledge and ideas in such a clear and enjoyable manner! I found it really helpful to hear about how to improve ones’ musical interpretation through thinking about ‘ making a phrase more beautiful’ for example!
    I am an adult beginner / returner (having learnt at a basic level as a child). Please can you explain a bit more about what you mean by attaining true legato and the technical aspects of how to achieve this? Many thanks 😊

    • @TheFeelGoodViolinClub
      @TheFeelGoodViolinClub  3 года назад +1

      By developing a true legato I mean learning to sustain the sound across bow strokes, to "mask" bow changes, and avoid any unintentional dips in sound. It is a process, but just the intention and pursuit can take you a long way! If you can imagine how it would sound to completely connect between bow strokes, and envision how that might feel in your bow arm, you likely can accomplish it on your instrument as well :) Think about moving very fluidly!

    Liz, thank you for another fascinating installment in your ongoing series of musical tips! 🙏 Can you please explain what you mean at 2:52 by "use more bow"? 🤔 Does that mean using more pressure, more speed, or some combination of the two? Is this related to your earlier video on bow fundamentals? I'll link to that video here: ruclips.net/video/RBg_HD6ZBWE/видео.html
    Your tips in today's video remind me of a couple things I've discovered during my guitar journey. For example, I've noticed that I get a much better sound when I pick harder, which is easier to do when I use a thick, heavy pick; but it mostly comes down to the amount of force I use. This might be the guitar analog of "use more bow". 😁
    I have one overarching rule for myself when I play anything on the guitar: *make it sound like music!* 🎵 This reminds me of your tip at 7:37 to "make music". I think this tip is particularly helpful for musicians who have developed a strong sense of musicality and understand how music is supposed to sound. For example, I've been singing for decades, and that sense of musicality guides me as I learn to play guitar. I think musicality relies heavily on developing a discerning ear, and learning what kinds of things to listen for helps a lot. I can't wait to get your take on musicality, Liz! 🙌
    I see other interesting parallels between violin and guitar, like the use of vibrato (2:10), harder fingerings (6:09), and other techniques that make string instruments so deeply expressive. Both instruments provide a zillion ways to play each note, and we can draw on this vast palette of tone colors to shape our music artistically! Thanks again for another great video, Liz! 💗💗💗

      @TheFeelGoodViolinClub  3 года назад +3

      Hey Fred, thanks for your question and thoughts! Using more bow definitely has to do with bow speed, and also has to do with follow-through. It’s about getting the bow arm moving more, and moving through the bow changes, which allows for more fluidity and continuity between strokes.
      It's definitely related to the bow fundamentals video in that a balance of factors (speed, pressure, and contact point) is needed to get a good sound to begin with. But finding follow-through is maybe a more advanced concept that would be worth considering for someone who is already relatively comfortable with the bow.
      In general using more bow (with an appropriate combination of pressure and contact point) can help get the sound spinning out of the instrument.

      It’s good to experiment with different shoulder rests to find something that really suits you. It can be a process for everyone. And also take breaks! You can definitely build strength and stamina if you’re playing somewhat regularly, just be careful to give yourself breaks when you need them.
