What Made WrestleMania 17 So Legendary ?

- WWE WrestleMania 17 is widely considered by many, the greatest WrestleMania of all time. After 36 years, this is the apparently the GOAT. But why is that? Is it because of the main event? The feuds? The story lines? The time period? I mean it did take place during a time when the roster was stacked. Stone Cold, The Rock, Taker and more. Well, all the above to be honest. It was a combination of so many factors. Let’s take a deeper look at why this show was so special, why it was so legendary.

I know this show has been talked about to death, but it’s hard to start a Wrestlemania series without talking about this one. So hope y’all don’t mind 😂, I’m going off with the content now since it’s officially Wrestlemania season. Be on the lookout🙏🏼
Love your vids man, I enjoy other wrestling content but yours feels special as it gives off a friendly atmosphere as you talk about something you love.
WrestlinGifs You should do wrestlemaina 24
Remembering Jim Ross saying Edge breaking him in half. I still hear that insane chair shot
*We cool as long as you do a what made wrestle mania 32 so awesome!*

WrestleMania 17 wasn't just a wrestling event, it was an experience.
No more like a once in a lifetime event

I was there for it. It was a bad ass time 😢
I still have my ticket stub. I think I was in 8th grade or so when I went. This is nestolgia right here
The promo for The Rock vs Stone Cold. Still gives me chills to this day.
Give wrestlers the go to say what they want and it comes out believable. You can see The Rock and Stone Cold both believe in every word they speak. No scripts, just J.R, his questions and two of the biggest stars doing what they do best. Magic.
Hey bob... just one... more fight
WrestlinGifs to be history
Especially stone colds heel turn as a kid it shocked me
You remember march 22 smack down episode
It displayed how deep and optimized the roster was at the time; the only "bad" match was Chyna/Ivory, which was just a quick 2 minute squash. When HHH vs. Undertaker is in the midcard, you know your roster is stacked.
Undertaker HHH was in The SEMI Main Event LOL, Only Austin-Rock was After LOL.
And they all had a big act to follow after that epic TLC midair spear
My greatest regret is not being there live for Wrestlemania 17!
Jesus Christ Loves You All Repent & Draw Near To Him 🙏❤️✝️
My first and only WM
To this day whenever I hear ‘My Way’ by Limp Bizkit, I think of that promo and a little chill runs down my spine.
InTheBinMate same
So true man
I agree
When the My Way instrumental hit when he started talking about the main event I got chills...
Yeah bro its iconic. The rock and stone cold made that song what it is.
Got literal chills and goosebumps when you started talking about Rock vs Austin. Even when JR was like "and the time is upon us Paul" then Paul Heyman replies with "The time is now, it's the match that both men need to win and neither man can afford to lose". Then the promo featuring "My Way" kicks in. Uhhh man when wrestling is at it's best, there is absolutely nothing better in sport or entertainment!
It has always and will always be my favorite match of all time.
That moment was the uttermost mountain top of The Attitude Era. You could also say Austin uniting forces with McMahon to steal the Title away from The Rock, was The End of the era. It was truly a golden age
I think its illegal for any wrestling fan to not know that my way promo from top to bottom. Steves lines at the end show so much reapect and care the wwf title used to hold, I need to beat you rock more than anything you could imagine. There can only be one wwf champion and that will be 1 wwf champion and that will be stone cold steve austin, with all due respect.
Facts
It was such a mega fight feel. The shot of Rock all pumped walking backstage to the gorilla position. The shot of Austin in the dimly lit locker staring into the mirror. I was like 13 and it felt like the balance of the world was at stake from the hype. Literally like the narrator said “it was like Avengers Infinity War”
21:27 “THEY’RE SHAKING HANDS!!!”
“STONE COLD IS SHAKING HANDS, WITH SATAN HIMSELF, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SOMEONE TELL ME, THIS IS NOT HAPPENING!!”
“ITS HAPPENING, STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN HAS SOLD HIS SOUL, FOR THE WWF TITLE!”
Classic
What really makes this is all the subtle hints they dropped to this ending in the buildup. And still no one saw it coming.
Awesome and hilarious at the same time
I was born in 2003 I have just went back and watched Wrestlemania 17 I can see why everyone loved this Wrestlemania it was amazing.
I was 13 back then. Me and my schoolmates were so excited about WM17 rock vs stone cold match.
@@Pinoque88able Me too. My how time flies. We had it good back then. *cries in corner
i was born in 2005 and i just went back to watch it, truly amazing. I just wasn’t so impressed by Benoit vs Angle tbh, it was cool but it wasn't like i expected it to be
I was born in 2003 as well an when I seen that Wrestlemania an damn it was iconic
I was 18. It was an epic time for wrestling. Feels like a lifetime ago
This was my era of wrestling. I was a young impressionable boy. I was always an Austin guy. My dad was a Rock fan. It became this huge deal in our house. I look back on those memories very fondly. Anyone who grew up through those "Attitude Era" years was blessed to be a Fan at a time when it was actually culturally "cool". No more of that Stigma -- Oh you're a wrestling fan? It was finally cool to rock ;) your Austin 3:16 shirts. Awesome video, my favorite wrestling memories.
Not just the greatest WrestleMania of all time. I would say this is the best wrestling pay per view ever.
Everything about it was awesome. The promos, the stars, the matches, and the fact that there was no dull moment at all. This will always the best one.
The greatest Wrestling PPV of all Times.
Until the fuckin ending, which is a horrible turn.
Hell no WM25

Edges spear on Jeff is so iconic ! One of my favorite matches of all time
Amazing! It was just the best match in the line up to me! Even though, my Hardy Boys didn’t win, it was the best LTC match of alllllll time!!!!
Shane McMahon had some of the most iconic moments in wrestling history. He deserves a lot of credit for being the bosses son and putting that kind of work in.
One of my favorite high flyers
i just finished watching this on wwe network yesterday too, i swear i was glued to my bed for 4 hours lmaooo
This is the very first PPV that my grandparents ordered for my friends and me. What a night!! I’ll never for get that night for as long as I live. Being it was my first PPV, I thought every WWF PPV was this awesome. Great video bro.
One could also argue it was the Astrodome's last great event
Yep. It’s sad to see what this once thriving Stadium has been reduced to. It’s abandoned and deteriorated as hell
I went to Astros games there and the rodeo my whole childhood. WM17 was the last time I was there
Literally the Pinnacle of that era, the era I grew up watching. Austin joining forces with Vince was such a shock. And yes it was never the same after that. Rock went on to make movies, the Invasion stuff happened. The horrible NWO WWE run 😔. WWF becoming WWE. Man, wrestling back then was so crazy.
Oo oO the last part of the Attitude Era (WCW Invasion) wasn’t so good, I don’t blame you for not watching that, but you really missed out. WWF got good again in 2002 when they renamed it WWE, the era from 2002-2008 was good, not as good as the Attitude Era but still good, when WWE went PG that’s when it really started to go downhill.
@@hypn0298 He didn't say that he didn't watch it. Especially since he listed out storylines that he knew from that time. There was an even mix of good (Smackdown) & bad (Raw) during the initial brand split. So half of the fans liked it while the other half hated it. Exemplified best by the crowd reaction to Royal Rumble 2003's championship matches. In terms of writing, 2001's invasion may have been a disappointment, but at least it didn't have 2002's Katie Vick.
It was never the same? Well, yeah. Wrestling is always changing. The ruthless aggression period was great!
I WISH YOU WERE ABLE TO SHOW FOOTAGE =[ miss these wish we had a way to rewatch every raw and PPV in order like a tv show
SLAPTrain I know man, it would be so much easier to edit too aha, also check out the WWE network. They got every Raw since the beginning and every PPV as well!.
I’ve been binging raw since 98 on the wwe network plus the ppvs
My dream was that of only the golden years, wwe network you can watch it all back in order like a series, fuck lockdown I’m at wm17 👌
Hey, you can do that. Subscribe to WWE Network (£9.99 a month, so probably $10 a month for USA) and you have full access to every Raw, Smackdown and main event they ever made.
Oh hey slap big fan of ur RUclips vids plus never knew u were into wrestling anyways nice seeing I being on the comments again
The Austin/Rock promo is the GREATEST of all time and I don't see anything in pro wrestling that will EVER top that. Pure Greatness!
Rock vs Austin actually is what broke me. I got tired of The Rock getting screwed over and I was so glad he was redeemed in the long run but it was heart breaking and frustrating to see the Rock give as much as he did and carry the strap as little as he did.
I could have never imagined 21 years ago that I would witness the greatest Wrestlemania of them all. I’m humbled and honored to have watched it live in the Astrodome when wrestling was at the peak of its powers.
The wrestlers were over with the fans, great stories were told and good matches.

The perfect main event with the best Promo ever made. That match was the absolute peak of WWF.
Perfect main event? I’d give that to 20 especially with a much more satisfying finish
@@tinotica nah Benoit was great but that wasnt a pleaseant finish man for m it sucks i was rooting for HBK I Personally think WM 20 is overrated the obly good match was the triple threat main event the rest of the show was meh maybe eddie vs angle but wm20 ending i never Like it
Supernamek2121 I can respect that. I was pulling for HBK as well. I was sad he didn’t win but just seeing Eddie and Benoit embrace at the end was just the cherry on an amazing match.
I will say it’s one of the more overrated matches as everyone says it’s the greatest triple threat match which I disagree. I think the Vengeance 2002 triple threat main event was better
@@tinotica Not even close.
@@WhipahSnapah my opinion. Vengeance was just more exciting for me
I went to this show as a kid, only my second wrestling show. Also one of the last major events in the Astrodome. What made it so great with Rock/Austin was that it wasn’t a nostalgia act, it wasn’t some cheap gimmick, you had two guys who were at their peak. The ending was sloppy, but this still just iconic.
I was working this WrestleMania.. amazing
The rock vs stone cold promo is the greatest of all time.
Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker at WM26 says hi
Hmood Gamer, and the rock vs stone cold ignores them.
@@McMarty93 because they're embarrassed to talk with someone better than them :)
I like the hogan vince promo for wm 19 better.
@@hamoodddw taker vs Shawn does not compare. Sorry.
Being 5 years old around this time, I still remember everything leading up to WrestleMania 17. The promo package for Rock & Austin is definitely the greatest promo package in all of wrestling, not just WrestleMania. You think about how hyped you were when two boxing greats are about to go at it, or two UFC fighters about to have their big fight...this was WWE’s ultimate big fight! And everything else on this card felt important too! I’ll rewatch WrestleMania 17 to this day on the network, and not one time I would consider fast forwarding, I just watch the whole thing. That’s how amazing it is!
The 2nd Triangle TLC Tag Team Match & Rock vs Austin were the greatest matches
the roar wen Linda stood up was unreal
What made WM17 so great was the fact that there wasn't a down side at all on the whole PPV... even the gimmick battle royal was entertaining. It kept getting better & better & better the longer it went on. They'll never top this
"You will always be partial to what you grew up on."
Then what would you say is the favorite era of a person who was a kid during the Golden Era, adolescent in the New Generation, teenager in the Attitude Era, & college aged during Ruthless Aggression?
Personal reasons why this show rocked:
1. TLC II
2. Angle vs. Benoit (Although they would have better matches later)
3. Triple H vs. Undertaker (SUPER underrated match, H's last great singles match pre-quad tear)
4. Main event (Best of Rock & Austin's WM trilogy)
5. One of Bobby Heenan's last shows on commentary, sharp as ever (By the time the Iron Sheik gets to the ring, it'll be WrestleMania 38!)
This show is so well rounded and I love it.
Angle v Benoit at WrestleMania X-Seven is a technical masterpiece, their Royal Rumble 2003 clash is somehow a classic which is a compensation for the awful HHH v Scott Steiner World title match
@@michaelbandada9887 It's not my favorite of the singles matches they had together. Their ultimate submission match a month later and the one at the Rumble are better imo. I did like it more than their 2/3 falls match at Judgment Day '01 (which isn't a knock on the match, it's fine, but it didn't impact me like their other encounters.)
And yeah, that HHH/Steiner match was difficult to watch. Most people blame HHH for the burial, but Scott came into that match with an injured foot, so he was severely handicapped in what he could do in ring, which was already a bit limited due to the years of injuries he suffered throughout the nineties. Not to mention the inane build for it including posedowns and push up contests.
...where was I? Oh yeah, Angle and Benoit. Still a good match, not my favorite.
Chyna vs. Ivory one of the greatest female storylines
Austin Rock WM 17 is the best match ever. Don’t @ me.
Nope.... Taker vs Mankind Hell in a Cell, best match ever!
Taker vs Michaels WM 25 disagrees
Maybe the Greatest Wrestlemania match ever. But greatest wrestling match is still Okada vs Kenny Omega Dominion 2018

I’ll always remember that promo for Austin v Rock so many memories so badass
Greatest WM of all time! The promo for Rock vs Austin and limp bizkit’s “my way” is the greatest promo ever! I was about 10 And me and my older bro who was like 16 at the time were huge into wrestling. And we actually went to the smackdown show in Detroit the week of Wresltemania on the 27th I think and it aired the 29th. I still watch that episode on the WWE network lol but I remember the day of WM I ordered it on PPV and didn’t tell me parents. But they found out that day because we were watching it and they pretty pissed but it was all worth it. They cooled down about it and me and my bro were just fucking hyped! Lol we recorded it on VHS I remember.
Brought back a lot of memories watching this. I remember my friends wanted me to go hang out that night. I said no cause I wanted to watch Wrestlemania. They were annoyed but man am I ever happy I stayed in. That was one of my most memorable moments in my life. Watching x7 with my dad and brother. Wwe will NEVER have that magic again.
What made it so legendary ? The Rock and Stone Cold, that’s it . I haven’t watch the video , but there isn’t anything more legendary then when them two are in the ring at the same time. 🙏🏼
My Way by Limp Bizkit. That song made that build up promo even more sweeter.
Give credit to TLC II that was one of the most exciting matches to watch ever
Phungtastic_15 your right bro! There isn’t going to be another TLC match that can top that . Never . One of my favorite matches of all time
Rock and Austin basically feed each other off and whenever they face off, fireworks tend to explode
They faced off three times at WrestleMania though. Meaning there are other factors that separate this one from the rest.
Talent and booking matched perfectly that night. Even the Austin Turn was epic for that night alone.
iq2992 FACTS. The finish of the main event was expertly done and a thrilling seeing Austin crush the Rock with the chair shots and the way he stood straight up after the 3 count was so awesome.
Matt Moon that Stone Cold heel turn could be avoided if Stone Cold decided to let Vinnie Mac help him beat The Rock and just when Vince thought he was getting a handshake from his former archenemy, Stone Cold flips the birds and drops the evil Chairman with the Stone Cold Stunner and closes the show with a beer bash
Michael Bandada that’s what Austin said he wishes he did. Stun McMahon
One word: everything

His wrestling knowledge and storytelling and banter with JR took every moment in every match to a level of seriousness and magnitude and gravity that I don’t feel Jerry Lawler could’ve done. 1. 17 end of attitude era and amazing card! Austin/rock masterpiece, TLC 2, hhh/taker, regal/ Jericho. Omg what a card!
2. 14 peak attitude era! Hhh/Owen , rock/shamrock, Austin/Michael's! Very close 2nd
3. 22 triple threat match for world title was a classic! Hhh/cena was a hell of a match
4. 21 passing of the guard to cena and Batista. Loved Batista/HHH
5. 26 Shawn the GOAT says goodbye. Enough said
I thoroughly agree with you about 31.was a good show but wasn't a great show at all. i also wasn't find of 19.rock / Austin was good angle/lesnar as well but didnt like rest of card personally.
What you said about wm 17 being the peak was spot on. However I do wonder if wwe had waited a year and got all the wcw big players and had the real Invasion man it would be epic. It would have towered over the attitude era because of the dream matches and the stack roster
Just left to watch the promo, UNBELIEVABLE!! Man this was awesome
Definitely my favorite Wrestlemania of all time, I'm about to watch it now. Great commentary 👍👍
Do WrestleMania 20 that ppv was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
¿¿Porque??
WrestleMania 20 aka
The Main Event that is ignored
Brock v Goldberg: A Boring Showdown
Big Match John wins his first title
Trish and Christian smooch on stage
Rock’s last match until 2011
Brothers of Destruction Part Deux
Molly loses her hair
My 2nd favorite behind 19
@@michaelbandada9887when undertaker returned he was a hybrid taker lol until 30 those were some of the best matches I've ever seen of his
There were like only 4 good things in that Mania, Cena wins his first title, Eddie retains the WWE Title, Benoit wins the World Heavyweight Championship and Taker returning as the Deadman
WM 17 is the greatest due to Austin vs Rock, TLC 2, Angle vs Benoit, and Taker vs HHH, which were all 4 stars and above. Even Shane vs Vince and the street fight with Kane were entertaining so that makes 6 good matches, which meant the show got better and better as the time progressed. God Bless
The Kane raven and big show match was awesome too
@@Ozzyozzysheesh Agreed that was the 1st good match that set the stage to the best ppv ever. I rate that match at 3 stars, if others say higher I wouldn't blame them. What is your rating of that match. God Bless.
@@mrpsycholeojoey87 are you rating it 3 out of 5 or 3 out of 10? And I rate it 7 out of 10
@@Ozzyozzysheesh Fair question. I give the match a solid 3 out of 5 stars, which I guess is equivalent to a 7 out of 10. God Bless.
@@mrpsycholeojoey87 I agree bro and god bless stay safe
