    Hard to top American gospel music from the 1940s-1960s. I could listen to this all day.

    Not only Elvis Presley was listening to the Golden Gate Quartet. Soul Brother No. 1, the late great James Brown also mentioned them as a great musical influence.

      I knew it and hear it. I feel it too. Other folks might be very fine imitators but these fine folks are the unmistakeable greatest❤❤❤.

    This group was often imitated, but never matched. In 1962, a pop group (I think it was the Four Preps) charted on the Billboard chart with a version of this arrangement. Somebody told me Elvis Presley also recorded his version of this arrangement.

    Elvis met the guys in Paris while he was in the army, at the Casino de Paris. They spent a few hours jamming backstage. I imagine that he must have heard them before, but it's probably where & when the idea of his 1st gospel album (his hand in mine) took place. ALL of the arrangements are exactly the GGQ's. And the same goes for How Great thou Art 1967. Anyway, they are both great. Also listen to the Mills Brothers from the 30s, the GGQs must have listened to that a bit too !

      That´s true they met in Paris! Mum and I was also there but missed when dad=Caleb Ginyard and the others was jamming with Elvis as we had made a short trip back to Sweden at that moment Elvis came!

    Ah, the days when American Christianity was a generous, happy religion. I miss the end of that and all the gospel stars of my youth.

      American Christianity is a lie created by the white man, blow the dust off of your granny's bible and actually read it!

      @Del Jones protestantism is nothing but a fake version of christianity adapted for white mans greed

    • @HaraldSjellose
      @HaraldSjellose 3 года назад

      'happy' religion.. religion is not something that can be happy or sad. its not something that you come together and sing songs for fun. I like american gospel songs a lot but I like them as nice songs written and sang by nice people because thats what they are

    • @HaraldSjellose
      @HaraldSjellose 3 года назад

      @Del Jones the term 'white mans greed' is not about mere skin colour. its a mindset that created the exploitation of one man by another. many people call it 'white' because it has been institutionalized by white people. and I dont see how watching TV is relevant

    • @HaraldSjellose
      @HaraldSjellose 3 года назад

      @Del Jones if we are going to unite together, american/western european protestantism cannot be our guide. thats all.

    I'm an atheist but i was always a huge GGQ fan. I actually own the record of this concert, so this was always my favorite recording of these songs. Great jazzy arrangements, too.

    I don't know, tell me if I'm wrong, but the Mills Brothers are waaay more relaxed and better with the clarity and the togetherness of harmonies and their time was even earlier

      Such determinations are silly. While there are indeed differences in such as style, delivery, timbre, etc., direct comparison is an empty exercise wholly dependent on personal preference.

    When black music was uplifting and soul touching. It is a pity most black music nowadays has become rough and vile.
