CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Kirk (Robert Downey Jr.) discusses acting with Tugg (Ben Stiller) and why he didn't win an Oscar for "Simple Jack."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Ben Stiller's satirical look at Hollywood, Tropic Thunder concerns the production of an epic Vietnam War film that quickly derails thanks to the giant egos of everyone involved in the production. Stiller stars as Tugg Speedman, an action hero trying to segue out of that genre. Jack Black plays Jeff Portnoy, a drug-addicted fat comic also attempting to change his image by taking on such a serious film. They star alongside Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), one of the world's most awarded actors, and a man who insists on immersing himself totally in a role. In this case, that means Lazarus has had his skin dyed in order to portray an African-American soldier. After their outrageous behavior lands the film's director, Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan), in very hot water with producer Les Grossman (Tom Cruise), Cockburn takes the advice of grizzled Vietnam vet Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte); in order to gain control of his performers, Cockburn drops the actors off in the jungle, planning to film the movie guerrilla-style with hidden cameras. When the group stumbles upon a heroin production camp, the actors are unaware that they are in very real danger.

Such an underrated line 😂

As a black man I never found this even remotely offensive. Hell he was the main reason I liked this movie! Superb acting, great social commentary, and pure hilariousness.
Because you’re cool person and know that the intent of this was good and not meant to be offensive. People (white or black) who got offended by this need to chill.
Awesome! I try to be able to laugh at myself. Im still learning though.
@Triple X It wasn't just jokes (which were masterfully crafted by the way). The whole point of the character was to shine a giant light on how bad it was for the practice of blackface/casting non-POC as characters who are POC/replacing the existing POC character with a white character. They even specifically pointed it out in the movie (through the actual black character in the crew) for the slow folks who didn't understand that. But sadly people have lost their ability to grasp context these days.
You ain't woke, my brotha! they are oppressin you! open your third eye! educate yourself!!!!! REEEEEEE!!! I'm just messin, scene's hilarious but it would never be allowed today, everyone too butthurt

They should be proud of it. Because it's hilarious. I went to the movies to see this 11 times, no cap. I've never been to the movies to see a movie more than once outside of The Matrix. And I only went to see it 3 times... cause that doesn't sound as crazy, right?
And they should be proud. They did such a fantastic job.
They should be proud and never apologize for it. This movie gave out the career best performances from everyone, Stiller alongside with Marvel in 2008 saved RDJ's life
"When I was playing the character."
"When you _was_ the character."
I love this line. He knew exactly where he was going with that conversation. Great script writing.

"When I was in the film"
"Tropic Thunder" may be one of our biggest selling cannabis placements in Edmonton? I ask you?
It took me a few viewings of this movie to notice just how much Downey's character dislikes Stiller's. He's constantly mocking, trolling and condescending to him in scenes like this, only to finally respect him at the end when he sees how "method" he has gone with the Simple Jack role. That's actually a pretty good character arc amid all the jokes and craziness in this movie.
It’s not just a dig at Stiller’s character. It also reflects Kirk’s own views on acting. He’s a guy with an identity crisis who becomes every character he plays via method acting. He takes the craft seriously while Tugg can still step away and recognize that it is just a role. It’s also worth noting that Tugg primarily played the same character for most of his career as opposed to dozens of different roles.
How the hell did Stiller keep a straight face throughout this whole scene??
if you're getting paid millions, you'd keep a straight face too
@Kimmy Boy Multiple takes. I would have been out for the day laughing
Stiller, as in his face is Stiller than anyone elses? 😅

I give stiller credit here. He’s acting as an actor would act that’s talking about acting....well.

Meatballs 101 don't act like you can't generally tell by voice if someone is black or white
Smash 456 stop trying to imply the original comment is racist. Black and white people naturally sound different. There's nothing racist about that difference. RDJ sounds black in this movie just as he sounds white in Iron man movies. Gosh , you people are so quick to play the victim and cry racism when other people highlight natural differences in different races.
Yeah, nothing to be offended for. It's just plain facts. Telling there are certain differences doesn't automatically mean one is inherently better than another, which is the actual definition of racism

Another point to this scene is how audiences prefer to see disabled characters that thrive in spite of (or even because of) their disabilities. "Rain Man" and "Forrest Gump" had disabled focal characters but they manage to thrive which is why audiences loved them. "I Am Sam" had the protagonist constantly struggling throughout the film because of his disabilities and audiences and critics rejected it cause almost nobody wants to see a film about a disabled character where the guy is only struggling and failing.
For real. I can't tell if that movie was trying to describe what an autism is or just to make a fun of it
So giving a punch of reality through I am Sam is offensive and making "fun" of autism but showing fake reality through Forrest gump and rain man is uplifting and inspirational ?! How stupid can you get?

Alex Summers Listen I know RDJ dominated this role and I do believe comedy needs more respect from the Oscars. That said there is no competition. TDK Joker was a masterpiece from start to finish, it had nothing to do with his death. That was hall of fame. needs to be remembered forever kind of acting. I understand you have your personal opinion but I feel like the Joker shouldnt even be under question.
I hope this was one of those timelines created in Endgame
OP Panda the dialogue in this piece alone is oscar worthy
16 years. Everybody knows you don't go full Doom.
@1:44 “He charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping pong champion ship”😂🤣😂🤣😂 I cant breathe
my ship's name is also champion
I Keep Replaying This Part Over And Over LMAO
Geez, RDJ was paid a massive discount price at this point of his career and STILL pulled off one of the most convincing performances ever.
It wasn't a discount. He was bouncing back from being an unreliable drug addict. He got what he deserved and turned it around.
I don't know why the line "Damn" cracks me up every time.
Saw this for the 1st time on an edible and I absolutely couldn’t breath 😂
oh damn! thats awesome
What ever happened to this actor he starred in one movie and never appeared in anything else, if he continued this he could've been cast as war machine in the MCU that same year
Don't you guys understand, that the reason why RDJ was casted for this part was to mock the very idea of Black-Face? The actual black character in the movie even mocks him! The reason why the character is so animated, hammed-up, and exaggerated is to mock the practise of casting white actors for colored characters, back when it was a regular practise during the early hollywood period.
Apparently, that was "subtle" for some slow individuals, who couldn't catch onto the use of lampooning and satire. Jeez guys, perhaps dissect and inspect certain plot devices, or satirical tones before playing the racism card? Fuck's sake you idiots.
Exactly and I'm black too
it was also a satire on the level of commitment method actors use
Josh This is the age of Michael Bay, "Subtle" is a word that doesn't exist in the vocabulary of most people

Ah, the eternal wisdom of the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude.
He was a god dam war hero
Who’s here after watching Joe Rogans podcast with Robert Downey Jr?
🤣🤣🤣me
Me too couldnt help it
Literally Got Reccomended to me 😂😂
🖐
Every time someone mentions this movie I feel obligated to either watch scenes or rewatch it. It’s a classic!
Robert Downey really pulled off a black accent, this dude is really good.
Black Accent? Wtf does that even mean?
Bloody Raptor ok🤣😂🤣
@@puncho33 Kirk gives April Booth
@@bloodyraptor6251 black American accent, AAVE, stemming from black American culture.
@@kekelauren6251 no, that's a southern accent. Y'all are stupid.
They should have gotten this guy to play Black Panther
There is no such thing.
Rachael Sampson I’m trying to figure out if you’re just stupid or being sarcastic.
Would have been funny, but would also have cost a lot.
If they ever did that I would stop watching marvel movies forever.
@UTubeCorruptAntiFreeSpeechLiberalCo you're an idiot.
And here he is after his OSCAR win
"He was a goddamn war he-ro." LMBAO
leviathanmg "You know any retarded war hero?"
leviathanmg is LMBAO laugh my butt ass off?
Laugh my black ass off
This is the absolute funniest & probably true genuine moment of Roberts career. Even after CHAPLIN & all his other intense performances. He gives a true insight of the willingness of an actor to be stupid.
ty i needed that
Robert Downey, Jr. made this movie.
Just like he seems to make every movie he's in these days.
***** Man, he's had a great comeback lately, hasn't he?
He's definitely a "comeback" story. The man turned his life around BIG time. And the world rejoiced.
Tom Cruise threatening the asians is one of the funniest scenes.
*****
the whole Ben Stillers character a spoof of the real Tom Cruise-action hero--get it Speedman/Cruise and then Tom playing Grossman and berating Stiller as himself-f-cking genius--apple bottom jeans--whoop whoop-actual got Mr. Cruise some respect
This is one of my favorite lines to quote. Absolutely hilarious. I love this movie. Great acting!
The comedy in this scene (and in the whole movie btw) is so good at so many levels, its unreal. Robert is a monster actor.
One of the greatest comedies ever. RDJ deserved an Oscar for this role!
Heath Ledger man
@@MasterBetty69 Agreed, no one but Heath Ledger was going to win that.
He was nominated at least 😂🤣
He might be if Heath was not there with the Joker role
Classic bad beat story, like a straight flush getting beaten by a royal flush.
this movie is a satire on different actor types
the commited method actor
the actor using physical comedy
the big shot whos a nobody now
and the crap rapper who tries to make it in the acting world
SuperUnhappyman will smith?
@@durim187 Nah man, will smith's been nominated two times by the academy for best actor. No bad actor could do that, even just a nomination.

Props to Ben stiller for refusing to apologize for this scene when pressed .
These were the times lol RDJ was able to do this movie and iron man and nobody had to be cancelled because we knew the difference that intentions make
It's sad that everything has to be about correctness and issues can't be debated objectively on a case by case basis without one group or the other becoming emotional.
It’s still weird to look at why does he have to have black face just cast a a black person
@@Jr-bn7kc because the absurdity of an American playing a German whos playing a black guy disguised as an asian would be gone if they just casted a black dude. Do you know comedy or what acting even is? Lol
@@Jr-bn7kc The character was not black. That's why. It's about the ridiculousness of an Australian actor playing a black guy.
@@Jr-bn7kc it's not about a black guy. If the character was supposed to be a black guy they would have got a black guy. The whole bit is about how wrong it is in holly wood to do this stuff and is mocking the industry. The entire point is how wrong a white guy wearing black face is.
RDJ is the best actor ever after this role
I was watching tropic thunder for my second time just cuz it was on TV and he said never go full special..? Oh God...did I watch the clean version? O.o
Alyssa Adler If you had a child with cognitive disabilities you fight for inclusion for everyday, you would think differently.
christschool Possibly. However, one could say the same thing if someone had a child that died of a cocaine addiction. There are negative things everywhere, especially in comedy.
Come to Denmark! Everything is uncensored :D
DT Dang really? haha that's hilarious
DT I know where I'm retiring to.
Blackface and Les Grossman was the best things ever that came out of this movie period. Actually best thing in the whole cinematic history.
My respect for Ben Stiller has gone up over the years. I didn’t appreciate him enough in this movie when it first came out. Watching this clip again now and seeing him being seriously foiled here is so good lol
When people say "No more playing outside your races" I wanna show them this movie and be like "Are you sure?" Cuz this is pure comedy in gold
its because he is playin a dude disguised as another dude. it's not RDJ in blackface, it was kirk lazarus
But the black face is the joke in this context, it is about the character being tone deaf, if you are trying to play another race genuinely, not satirically, it’s gonna be odd
Soon blondes will have to prove they are indeed blond for a role.Bring paperwork that proves she had blondes in the family.
@@piotrswat169 Exactly. Eventually it won't even be acting. They'll have to find an actor that matches every aspect of the character in real life. It'll just be them playing themselves in a movie.
@@jeanbutinfrench 👏😊 Couldnt agree more. Its not malicious or intend to 'steal a role from an actor' or make fun of a race. Its actually really intelligent making fun of people who are racially tone deaf like you said. Those who don't understand will forever be confused about what is acceptable and what's not. Facts 💯
Like no one actually believed The Wayans Brothers were white chicks 😅 or Martin Lawrence or Eddie Murphy were playing 'real women'
