2:38 Aragorn telling them to charge and then pulling back his sword and doing it himself, still a superbly executed scene IMO. This whole battle is my favorite section out of all 6 middle earth films.
I love how you cant see Aragorn charging at 2:49 because of his black robes, and the only thing that is clearly visible is his sword. Nothing special in particular, but it makes the scene more special to me.
The sound of rocks hitting the Uruk-Hai’s pikes when the wall blew was just some of the detail that made these three films a once-in-a-generation movie franchise.
0:48 I find it funny that even though there clearly are other uruks with torches who are literally standing next to the charges, they still insist on having their 'olympic runner' do his thing just to give it a bit of ceremony.
I know this scene isn’t in the books, but part of what makes this whole scene so epic is to think that, while Aragorn is in his 80s, those elves are realistically far older than he is, likely many hundreds of years more experience in combat. Yet they accept his command without hesitation. Truly a great scene!
@@TheTonyEntertainment Typically the same as real humans, but Aragorn belonged to a race of men called Numenoreans and were known to live 250ish years.

For those wondering why Legolas could not take down the Orc with the torch it is because he was a Berserker. "They were larger, even more fearsome versions of the Uruk-hai, standing about six-and-a-half feet tall and weighing an estimated three hundred pounds. Before they were sent into battle, it is said that the bowl of their small, tight-fitting helmet was filled with the blood of their enemy, and then pushed onto their heads. The intoxicating smell awakened a blood-lust that drove them to a battle-frenzy and made them immune to pain." "Berserkers had no regard for personal safety, wore no armor except their helmets, and were expected to fight to the death. Their sole object was to establish a bridgehead"
My favourite scene of the entire battle, watching even the best marksman in movie history not being able to stop this badass was just so intense. That explosion was cinematic gold. I think at that moment we knew Helm's Deep was in real trouble. Okay, maybe second to when the Rohirrim charges down the hill with the rising sun behind them.
Legolas never hit it, watch the feathers used in Legolas's arrows compare to the ones that landed on the berserker, it is different or could be a film mistake.
17 years has gone by since this movie, and I can’t think of a better-looking, better-sounding explosion than the one at 1:18. And the way the music just cuts out! Totally epic.
I like how at 2:49, realising that the elves are charging downhill, instead of counter charging like most fantasy ork would do they deployed spearwall to brace it. Really smart move there. Also, not all elves goes to the charge. Some of them left behind to provide archer support from atop the hill. Although the scene was all too short to be noticed.
@@magnusthered4973 They literally explain it in the movie, what do you mean you don't understand it? Even though their time is coming to an end Elrond and Galadriel realize they can't just abandon them completely. This is one of the most important battles in the war of the ring. If Helms Deep falls, Rohan is obliterated and the heir to the throne of Gondor is killed meaning that Minas Tirith would stand alone and be destroyed. It's a change from the book that I think makes perfect sense.
Tactically speaking, such a bad idea to even charge. Stay out and pelt that area with arrows. Bottle neck as long as possible then slowly retreat into the keep.
@@mudyao Aragorn purely did it for Gimli dude. Allot of People will scoff at that but allot of people don't realize Gimli is actually drowning during the charge. Bottom line, he would be drowned, and buried by the time they found him if Aragorn didn't do this. Love of your friends bro, it'll make u do crazy shit.
When I rewatch lotr I always pay extra attention to small details. Look at the elves as they prepare to charge they have a system that backline stays hold their bows and the frontline draw their swords but not entirely some elves charge with swords from between the lines it's like they when an order is made they all know what to do.
Modern military, thousands of years of training and experience as many of you are mentioning here. I cant not still understand that they were almost so easily killed by some weeks old Uruks. I understand that immortality doesn't means that youre superhero ether, but in the way they have covered the Elves in helmdeep could be better.
@@carlodurant87 rko meme originated from a WWE superstar named Randy Orton, his finishing move is called RKO, and the commentators would continuously say something along the lines of "RKO out of nowhere" so then people started making funny youtube compilations that you can look up about Randy Orton doing an "rko out of nowhere" to random people falling
Actually Legolas was aiming for his heart from above avoiding to go through the berserker uruks rib cage ... just like gladiators gave thair enemies a quick death after losing a battle
As intense as that sequence is, it's also quite dumb once you think about it. So what if Legolas actually kills the uruk, effectively stopping him from blowing up the wall. There's literally dozens more around him, ready to pick up the torch and take his place. Legolas would have delayed the explosion just for a few seconds.
paused at 02:32 , I really love the elven armor design for the Galadhrim Elves....such a intricate design with lots of curves and leaf shape ornaments, not to mention the very tall long bow and their curved long blades as their weapons. All of those details really enforce the elves as tall elegant but also very skillfull in their fighting skill and weapon finesse. They are trained in using their agility in melee combat, as opposed to brute strength. The armor design is clearly way better and more elven like than those weird elven armor shown in Amazon Rings of Power. No wonder that among all of the 17 oscars won by Peter Jackson and the team for their trilogy, one of them is in the Custome Design category.
it make sense that their weapon and armor design show some form of nature and leaf design, they are Galadhrim after all, which is a Sindarin word meaning Tree People, mostly Silvan in origin, who inhabited the woods of Lothlórien. The Elven armor from Amazon RoP especially those that Galadriel and her team wear during their travel on the boat to Valinor, doesn't look elvish at all, it looks more like medieval human armor with round and big pauldron on the shoulder. No idea why it's designed like that though lol
how about this scene 02:40 , I like elves because of how orderly and tactical they are when fighting, which is totally the opposite of orcs or uruk hais who pretty much rely on brute strength and fight like brawlers and berserkers. Wish there were more Elves there, they're clearly outnumbered.
if it wasn't for the competition about being better than Legolas. That's what I love about them, almost everyone fights to survive, but not those 3 charakters. (Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn) Well just imagine they had more berserk-dwarfes like Gimli....= Ladder-Spawn-Kills without ending. :)
That counter-charge at the breach on the Deeping Wall will forever sit in its own special little place in my mind. Every time I rewatch it, with the barrage of arrows, and *CHARGE!* right after that, the music the everything its perfect blows me the hell away.
I saw this movie in the theaters back in 2002. I was a kid, running around the seats, but when this scene came up, I was like "Whoa!" For those who didn't see movies in theaters, especially this one, the sounds are LOUDER. They never match that of a DVD or streaming service. I will never forget this as long as I live.
The Lord of the Rings are movies that CANNOT and MUST NOT be remade ever!!! They are too damn good, and there is nothing that needs to be added to these masterpieces
I still remember the goosebumps watching this whole scene 0:40 to 1:16 in cinema. I'm not that much into fantasy movies/series, but this scene of the Uruk-Hai running with the torch is one of my favorite scenes ever, it' just badass.
Love how the Uruk-Hai despite being monsters still have an understanding of tactics. They form a spear wall to meet the incoming charge of the elves instead of just charging forward themselves into a big mosh pit.
Fun facts : You can see a camera at 1:56 on the bottom left corner when they are charging .. and second fact you can see Peter Jackson himself throwing a spear at 2:07 .. :)
2:38 Fvcking love this part.. especially when Aragorn was commanding in elvish language.. also his charging pose was too badass! No slight or fear insight!
Seriously, imagine being an Orc about to climb one of those ladders and all you hear coming from the top is a Dwarf shouting "SEVENTEEN! EIGHTEEN! NINETEEN! TWENTY!" 😂
So when I was little, I loved the scene where Legolas surfs down the stairs on a shield, shooting Uruk Hai and I still do, but for different reasons: I now love it in the context to what's happening. It's the whole last action sequence in the video: Gimli jumps down the wall to save Aragorn. Aragorn then charges right into an Uruk Hai spear wall. Then Legolas also makes his way to Gimli and Aragorn, stabbing an Uruk Hai with his last arrow. As I got older it turned from a cool action series into a showcase of their brotherhood. That's great filmmaking.
Seeing this in the theatre when it came out was mind-breakingly spectacular. The sight, the sounds, the characters. It was a masterclass in premier cinema! It still holds up superbly some almost 20 YEARS later!
You know, on hindsight, I don't think killing that Berserker would have made much difference in preventing that wall being blown up. One of the nearby Uruks would have just picked up that torch and finished the job.
yeah and its not like there is noone waving a torch right outside the hole as 2 orcs are carrying it inside at 0:49 who could have easily lighted it up without giving their plan away with the special sparkly torch guy...
When I went to see this on theaters, the part where Aragorn screams charge gave me goosebumps.. This is still my favorite of the trilogy, & also my favorite trilogy!!! When movies were still worth watching!
It was such a blast to see this whole movie in a theater. Saw it on opening day and it left me speechless. The battle of Helms Deep has a spot in my memory and heart until my dying day, so freaking epic. The whole trilogy is beautiful.

I love how you cant see Aragorn charging at 2:49 because of his black robes, and the only thing that is clearly visible is his sword. Nothing special in particular, but it makes the scene more special to me.

the sound engineers were nervous about that one, but Peter Jackson heard it, loved it, and it stayed.
0:48 I find it funny that even though there clearly are other uruks with torches who are literally standing next to the charges, they still insist on having their 'olympic runner' do his thing just to give it a bit of ceremony.
Underrated comment
I know this scene isn’t in the books, but part of what makes this whole scene so epic is to think that, while Aragorn is in his 80s, those elves are realistically far older than he is, likely many hundreds of years more experience in combat. Yet they accept his command without hesitation. Truly a great scene!

The intoxicating smell awakened a blood-lust that drove them to a battle-frenzy and made them immune to pain."
"Berserkers had no regard for personal safety, wore no armor except their helmets, and were expected to fight to the death. Their sole object was to establish a bridgehead"
Thank you for the info! I think if Legolas had hurled a spear into him, he wouldn't have gone down!
In card game berkserkers get +2 to strength for each wound on them
I was thinking about this and then I rewatched the part where Gimli kills two of them, one he axes in the balls. Gimli would’ve handled it 😂
Legolas never hit it, watch the feathers used in Legolas's arrows compare to the ones that landed on the berserker, it is different or could be a film mistake.

17 years has gone by since this movie, and I can’t think of a better-looking, better-sounding explosion than the one at 1:18. And the way the music just cuts out! Totally epic.
The only one I can think of is the battle of blackwater
I like how at 2:49, realising that the elves are charging downhill, instead of counter charging like most fantasy ork would do they deployed spearwall to brace it. Really smart move there.
Also, not all elves goes to the charge. Some of them left behind to provide archer support from atop the hill. Although the scene was all too short to be noticed.
I still don’t know why the elves are here they weren’t in the books it was all Rohan
@@magnusthered4973 movie additional changes

When I rewatch lotr I always pay extra attention to small details. Look at the elves as they prepare to charge they have a system that backline stays hold their bows and the frontline draw their swords but not entirely some elves charge with swords from between the lines it's like they when an order is made they all know what to do.

@@leovenegas4785 Better yet, shoot the torch?
paused at 02:32 , I really love the elven armor design for the Galadhrim Elves....such a intricate design with lots of curves and leaf shape ornaments, not to mention the very tall long bow and their curved long blades as their weapons.

The music is just incredible.
So when I was little, I loved the scene where Legolas surfs down the stairs on a shield, shooting Uruk Hai and I still do, but for different reasons: I now love it in the context to what's happening.
It's the whole last action sequence in the video:
Gimli jumps down the wall to save Aragorn.
The Lord of the rings and all its parts are the best movies ever made in history. the movies showcase the unending war between good and evil.
This battle has always been one of my favourite
Seeing this in the theatre when it came out was mind-breakingly spectacular. The sight, the sounds, the characters. It was a masterclass in premier cinema! It still holds up superbly some almost 20 YEARS later!
You know, on hindsight, I don't think killing that Berserker would have made much difference in preventing that wall being blown up. One of the nearby Uruks would have just picked up that torch and finished the job.
@Josh JeanJacket Jaeger True... though I'm sure they could just light it again.
