This movie trilogy was ruined for me. During a scene when they were cuddled up keeping warm some kid yelled "sam is that your dildo poking my baggins?" The theater erupted in laughter and now when I watch it I can't not notice the very not so subtle homoerotic stuff.
Ive always interpreted it so that he realizes to never give up, there is always hope - and this face is him acknowledging it. And later at the Black Gate he uses this learning to assault against all odds even when Frodo was thought to be dead.
For years and years I always thought Gandalf was using a spell to blind the Uruk-Hai when they get blinded as they charge into them. I now realise it’s from the sunlight coming over the hill, which leads back to Gandalf telling Frodo “A wizard is neither late nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means too.” Amazing detail.
A little more for you - if you remember the scene with the Balrog, when Gandalf says he is "wielder of the flame of Anor", "Anor" is the Elvish word for the Sun.
I'll give you guys one even better.. When Gandalf was ridding out with Pippen he told Aragorn "Look to my coming at first light on the 5th day. At dawn, look to the east". The scene right before Aragorn tells Theoden to ride out, is when he realized what Gandalf said and knew hope was on the way! So it was actually Theoden who believed he was ridding to his death once again. Aragorn always had a lucky, elvish way out of a jam, while Theoden, being just as or maybe even more fearless, met his challenges in a very human way. Man, LOTR has so many layers to it, its crazy.

the thing about the cgi in these movies is that it is so well blended into the rest of the frame. the textures and resolutions are not that great compared today but the seamless blend of cgi and live footage with color grading and all makes these movies unmatched on the special effects front in my opinion, the cgi in lotr, though technically inferior is better looking than the cgi in the hobbit. I believe what I am seeing and that is so rare.
i think its also becoz LOTR had lesser colors due to the fact it showed a darker era. the hobbit was colorful and smoother and more recent in sense of digital technology. but the thing is many of the environment is miniature
1:17 i still can't believe how they could make a scene so epic. These seconds of gandalf and shadowfax with this music are really unreal. The garbage of today will never reach those things. What a scene. Really a masterpiece.
1:53 The most epic scene in the history of cinema. I read somewhere that Tolkien didn't want his books ever made into a movie... but I think even he would be impressed.
His children hated these films. Still boggles my mind. I don’t understand why. All 3 films are excellent and universally loved. I’ve never known a single person in my life that hasn’t at least enjoyed them.
@@sharktoof1they don't like it because it deviates from Tolkien's work quite a lot, abandoning a lot of the hidden meanings and lessons. @@rivers169 they still packed emotion and heavy meaning as well. Lots of good messages of friendship, loyalty and grit and determination. I’ve read the books and LOVE them. I have never seen the issue with the adaption of the films. And that’s dope that Tolkien’s great grandson was in Return! I did not know that.
2:16 When Gandalf says "A Wizard arrives precisely when he means to", he means split-second precision. A half second earlier or later and the sun wouldn't have been in position to blind those uruks.
Gandalf being the Maia of sun he can summon its powers and harness it through his staff, that’s why when in the third one you see him fight off the nazul it’s the power of the sun
@@itnotmeitu3896 Maia[r] of the Sun? I don't recall him having that title. He's the Wisest of the Maiar, no more, no less. He served under Manwe (the 'technical king of the Valar'). But beyond that he never had any tile relating to the Sun.
aethertech he is the weirder of the flame of arnor which harnesses the power of the sun and is a member of the secret fire, also that’s his power is the power of the sun and you see it every single time he uses magic?

I love all the trilogy films, but this scene is among the best and makes the two towers my favorite one for many reasons. Just how Gandalf knew that having a high ground charge and the morning sun against the orks and also the loyalty of the rohirim brings so much more to the climax of the film... Just epic
I always loved how Theoden says Eomer here. With pride that his nephew grew to be such a man, a leader, about to spill blood to defend his kin and people.
1.50 the horses starting their charge with the sunrise breaking through, you can feel the emotion, the turning of the tide, the heroes will win the day, such an epic moment.
The first time I watched this particular scene where Gandalf and Eomer appeared and dominated the battlefield, it made me cry and stand. Plus that epic background music. Man that was glorious! LOTR is the best trilogy I watched in my entire life. 🔥
This battle scene always moves me to tears. It is the Light that overcomes Darkness. We need to be reminded this, especially now. The Light will prevail, in the end…
I think its my favorite scene from the trilogy now. It remind me _a lot_ Christian eschatology, specifically Revelation 19 + Zechariah 12 (the "white knight rising from the mountain like the sun to fight with his horses and riders for the holy city at the last minute").
Eomer was his heir. His son was killed at the fords fighting these orcs so now eomer gets the crown from him. Rohan is based off the saxons and normandy troops of old, including armor and horses
@@MrNickzwaan Well knowing how sharp his eyesight is he probably just saw a few hundred orcs brutally murdered by those trees. Would shock anyone honestly.
As a kid I had no idea what was going on but thought that what was happening was still amazing. As an adult, who finally understands the severity of their situation, this scene was now even more amazing.
Remember watching this when I was a young fella and getting goosebumps when they charged down the hill. Years later and those goosebumps still come every time I watch this scene. This will always be the greatest trilogy of all time.

Movie yes in the books he was at helms deep the whole time. It was another leader whose forces got scattered in a fight previously that Gandalf gets. Erkbane I think but its been a while. Also no elves were present at the fight.
One of my favorite moments in this movie! "Theoden King stands alone." "Not alone. ROHIRRIM!!!!!! FOR THE KING!!!!" Gets me excited and charged up every time I watch it.
Pretty sure he said *to* the king, which makes it even cooler. A simple, badass way of just saying 'kick their asses, they're in the fucking way' or something lmao
Yeah Men like Théoden and Aragorn are closer the original line of Men who were long lived, Aragon more so. That's why when he became King of Gondor, he ruled until he was around 200. Théoden though old, is clearly younger than his years as he is still able to fight. That is what a lifetime of battle will do to ya. The Kings of old were like that, they didn't just sit on their butts in some fancy castle, they went out and got sh*t done.
As the Rohirrim rode down the slope, I always thought the Orcs were blinded by Gandalf's magic. But rewatching the scene made me realize it was the natural sunlight, as Gandalf had told Aragorn: "Look to my coming, at first light, on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East."
Sure the elvish swords are clearly elegant and Anduril is beautiful in its own right, but Theoden's sword "Herugrim" is just so damn regal. Definitely my favorite in the trilogy.
When Gandalf was ridding out with Pippen he told Aragorn "Look to my coming at first light on the 5th day. At dawn, look to the east". @Pacific Warship Umm no. Rohirrims would not charge directly into the horde of wights with near zero visibility. It's not about what kind of enemy they're facing, but their intelligence and strategy against unfavorable odds. Don't try to defend the steaming pile of meh that is the battle of winterfell.
@@bizarrelygreen5177 Yeah they would not do that. I just thought about Pelennor Fields when Rohirrims charged into whole army of Mordor orcs and they smashed them, and I need to remind you that orcs have bodies and armors. And most Undead from GoT are just corpses, and they looks kinda like skeletons. Dothraki could destroy their bodies only with a strength of a running horse, maybe they would not kill them but only eliminate from the succesful fight, because for example Undead without legs can't run toward the enemy. The charge we saw in The Long Night was senseless from a tactical, and logical thoughts for me.
Every time when I'm stressed out or lose hope this is a good video to watch. It teaches you to give everything you got even in the last minute because you'll never know when a miracle will happen, and when it does, it will truly feel like victory, and the feeling will be amazing!
Even to this day, seeing Gandalf appear on top of the hill gives me great joy and can't help but smile. So few films can do that for me I'm glad this is one of them
I'm now 24 yrs old and was 8 yrs old when watched LOTR. Still keep coming back here and watching the whole series every year. This is still one of the best. Can't believe 2002 when this was filmed. Super great filming.
I feel bad for anyone that didn't get to see this in the theater when it first came out. One of the greatest theater going experiences ever. Still holds up so well, too.
Growing up, reading the books, and yes, playing D&D, and AD&D... I watched this trilogy with tears of sheer joy in my eyes. It was like they reached into my imagination and pulled the scenes and characters out, and put them all together . The orcs, ents, elves, the castles, all of it was exactly as I had envisioned.
Music, scenes are the high instance of art in this movie, heart is melting, eyes are flowing, the great hope is fenomenal!!! One of the most epic scenes, Legend, Historically immortal!
I came here after learning about Tolkien's historical inspiration for this battle, which was the battle of Vienna in 1683. The Polish Winged Hussars led the largest cavalry charge down on the Ottomans, ending their siege in a matter of hours. This scene is even more epic after hearing about the real events that inspired it.
2:23 As a Total War player it's very hard for me to ignore how devastating those pikes must have been on the charge (even with the sun in their eyes the wall looked lethal).
I I have seen this trilogy dozens of times, and every time I see this scene, I cry. In my opinion this charge of the Rohirrim is even better than the battle of the fields of Pelennor. There is something about the colors, the contrast between light and shadow, the music.... It's outstanding.
This trilogies creation was driven by passion, love, and dedication. Today's Amazon take is driven by Greed, Profits, and outside influence of the social political climate. I'm lucky to have been a young teenager just finishing school when FOTR was coming out. These movies will always one of my most cherished shows ever. No Amazon rubbish will take that from me.
Not only the films are amazing but they even managed to make good games out of them back in the day. LOTR got amazing treatment in 2000's. All three movies are my favorite films of all time.

I like how gandalf uses his staff to hit people instead of doing magic.
A magic Blast would of been cool
When you're a wizard but you have 20 STR:
2:37
He can’t use his magic 100%. Unless fighting a balrog of course or one of those nazguls.
What about the blinding light, while they charge into the orcs?
obviously he uses some kind of magic to manipulate his aura or enemies mind to being unable to fight back or sth
“He arrives precisely when he means to.” Proceeds to arrive after pretty much everyone is dead.
The urukhai just like the orcs are weakened by daylight, hence prefer to march and fight in the dark.

the thing about the cgi in these movies is that it is so well blended into the rest of the frame. the textures and resolutions are not that great compared today but the seamless blend of cgi and live footage with color grading and all makes these movies unmatched on the special effects front in my opinion, the cgi in lotr, though technically inferior is better looking than the cgi in the hobbit. I believe what I am seeing and that is so rare.
