The fact that the filming of Helm’s Deep was long, exhausting and hellish in itself, only added to the gritty aesthetic and realism in this battle. Fucking legendary.
@@santiagoz.s.1024 GoT is still good. But we have to see the difference. Storytellingwise those two are completely different. While LotR is about epicness and the Giant clash of the evil Force. GoT is more Character driven. the GoT episode relied on suspense and making you anxious. And they did a good Job on that matter. thats why the cinematografic shots of the battles were completely different. In GoT the Battle was merely a toolbut not the Point, while here it was all about the epicness. the directors never cared about having an amazing battle like here it was about the feelings it transported. Just compare the choosen MUsic from both and you see the massive difference.
@@santiagoz.s.1024 I'm not arguing that the battle itself was utter shit with no tactic at all. wqhat i mean is the directors didn't really care about that. The never wanted us the feeling we had in the battle of helms deep here. the Battle was merely a tool for where their focus was actually on. the suspense before the battle was done really good and the sad music over the fighting in the end act was impressive aswell. I completely agree on what you say. but i came to the conclusion that wasn't the point of the show all along. the directors wanted to achieve something different and did that part well. seeing the directors commentary on the battle helped me understanding that. Also even the whole enemy army was pointless and the battle itself. that all was made clear all along. It was just about the one character of the Night King all along. Trust me i am not an GoT Fanboy that wants to defend it to my death. but i am trying to understand why it was how it was instead of just saying it was shit. Cause while the battle was ridiculous bullshit, the Episode itself was quite fascinating, wasn't it?
Younger people who never saw this in the movies don’t understand just how intense this scene was . The NOISE of the roaring and stomping was deafening! Everyone in the place was open mouthed and silent …I genuinely felt my palms sweaty like i was about to be involved in some heavy shit . I will never forget that experience
And the best part about that? Completely unscripted. One of the Uruk Kai extras just started stamping his halberd out of boredom, and the rest joined in... Peter Jackson liked it, and let'em continue. The result? A truly epic sequence just before the battle.
@@Tank50usholy that is amazing. It’s like with Gandalf hitting his head and lurtz the Uruk hai captain who licked the bloody dagger which was actually real and threw it at viggo who deflected it then viggo kicking the helmet and breaking his toes
As a gen z raised in a traditional family i can confirm that my family watch lotr every summer and i still enjoy the fight scenes, story and the musical score
The fact that there's actual lighting over the actors and scenery despite it being night time is such a breath of fresh air. Movies nowadays make everything so dark you can barely see for 'mood' setting. It can be dark for the characters but the audience is the ones why have to see everything
During production, Sean Astin (Samwise) asked Andrew Lesnie (director of photography), "But where is the lighting suppose to be coming from?" Lesnie replied, "The same place as the music."
Es que antes se grababa con pelicula, y se requería de mucha iluminación para que la imagen se notara y no se llenara de grano. Ahora se usan cámaras digitales, por lo que algunos directores deciden grabar a oscuras para generar inmersión
The fact that this is the battle that all other/ future high fantasy battles compares to or tries to live up to. After all these years. Says a lot about this scene. Truly a masterpiece.
I love how Ukraine is using LOTR language when speaking about the war today. They are like Rohan, even in how their president was a Russian puppet at first (Yanukovitch). Russia is like Isengard, and China is like Mordor. Haldir's Galadhrim are the aid sent from the West, like HIMARS.

I watched them all the cinema. Was almost 15 when Fellowship came out. I haven't seen anything else as epic as these films since. If these are ever remade they'll be riddled with CGI, but the practical effects here are timeless.
I am 23 and i've seen these movies multiples times in mi life, till this day i wonder how was the feeling of seeing this movies for the FIRST TIME when they came out 20 YEARS AGO( 20 FKING YEARS AGO!) . @@aztekenen1 the trilogy has cgi, but for early 2000s effects this was groundbreaking. If it wasn't for these movies we wouldn't have gotten motion capture as we know it
The book doesn't play on their playful rivalry as much; but they do have a great friendship. Gimli is much more funny in the movie but has awesome lines in the book. For example, I was cracking up when he reunited with Pippin & Merry at Isengaard. He said something to the effect of “Hammer and tongs! I am so torn between rage and joy, that if I do not burst, it will be a marvel!” Rage and joy lol
Honestly, I would prefer Sean to him and Vigo to Boromir. Sean is such a great actor and somehow he looked more "manly" and in books, Aragorn is described as such, but still better than Nick Cage for sure, that would be failure for sure 😂

Rest in peace. Though he made the mistake that initiated the battle, we got to see one of the most the most spectacular battle scenes of all time. All because of him
forget the battle strategy, formation, all that... as a viewer/audience, THIS is how you do LIGHTING for a night battle scene. Not that other one with the suicide cavalry thing...
It's a good thing you said to forget about strategy formation and all that other useless shit because LOTR doesn't exactly have that stuff either most of the time. You just think it does and are mad at the GOT tv show for not giving you your fanfiction ending.
@@Regenmacher175 lol bro, relax. my biggest critique of GOT isn't even the battle itself. my problem is the way it was shot...as someone working in the broadcast/media production industry, it just ticked me off a lot

They weren't very convincing tbh because they always left out elements that had been established in the show but the people who made those videos didn't bother watching the show closely enough either it seems. What you get as a result is thousands of videos with superficial criticisms that I don't find very persuasive and certainly none of what they point out is worth the anger I witnessed online so the problem is not with the show but with the people watching it. Sorry the show you had in your head wasn't the one you got but you judge what's on screen, not the show that's in your head and you sound kinda silly when your criticism is something like "trebuchets in front of walls = show bad".
I remember watching this in theaters. The build up was so incredible. The lights of the torches off in the distance, the rain, the thunder. It was quite an experience
Or to be the orcs further back, doing nothing but wait the entire night to fight just to see the break of dawn and hundreds of horsemen ride down the cliff and slaughter them
I love the design of the Uruk-hai. The armor is intimidating and memorable, their weapons are crude, their battle cries are thunderous and demoralizing. A worthy adversary in battle. Props to the team that made Tolkien's work come to life. I know Tolkien-purists don't like the films, but they got millions of people into LOTR and Tolkien's other works.
Could you imagine having to fight one of them fuckers? Like even if you were a trained warrior. Seeing them breathing through their mask and roaring like lions. I'd be shitting my pants.
@@FauxRegard Uruk Hai are a superior breed of orc. They even fought each other. When Frodo was locked in the tower and they were searching his items, one was an orc and the other was an uruk. I love the books have probably read them 20-30 times. I love the lore and I could point out everything that was changed in the movies in a heartbeat. I still love the LOTR movies and they are 100% respectful to the lore and the original work. Do I wish Tom Bombadil, the barrow downs, the scouring of the Shire etc were included. Sure but it would have took at least 4 maybe 5 movies to do that. Now the Hobbit grinds my gears. Making a fairly short book into a trilogy adding tons of characters and things that didn't happen in the book to pad it into a trilogy, it felt like a cash grab. The cinematography was beautiful. I wish they would release a cut of the trilogy condensed and edited into one movie leaving out all the extraneous padding.

Oh so absolutely the greatest battle in cinema history. Nothing can beat it. Minas Tirith is one of the only battles I can think of that comes close, and that was part of the same series as this
This entire battle, and even the scenes leading up to it (like Aragorn finally arriving at Helm’s Deep), are why Two Towers is my favourite of the trilogy. Absolutely amazing battle that still stands up, and even excels, compared to other fantasy battle scenes of modern movies.
I can still remember that the whole movie theater was hyped af when the battle was about to begin, but when it started to rain, the theater went dead silend. Such a beautiful battle
@CodSucks911 That was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in television. She literally jumps from the middle of nowhere and somehow sneaks past all of the wights and ww?
The lucky stray shot was so well placed and accurate, Aragorn thought that a trigger happy elf had commit insubordination so he shouted an order in elvish telling them to hold fire.
Why am I seeing all these points in comment sections of Lord of the rings videos? Lol I've watched these hundreds of times how have I not ever wondered about these ? I need to watch them a different way I guess lol . Lots of interesting things I never thought about when watching this
Fun fact: Gimli's actor was supposed to let some of the orc actors climb the ladder on to the wall to show some of his axe handling skills, but instead he just kept hitting the actors before they got on the wall.
I mean, it is a better approach if this was a real fight. Gimli is too short for the crossbowmen to hit him behind the wall even if they knew he's there, which also means Uruks climbing up don't see him. And there they are trying to jump on the wall only to get greeted by an armored midget with an axe.
I still remember the first time I saw this was in Imax theatre. The darkness, the rain, the thunder and lightning, the stomping... the people inside the caves with the children..... I can't even describe how epic this build up to the battle was. The theatre was shaking. And then the battle itself was and is the best battle scene of all time. Truly legend.
I say the orcs will win the battle against these two. I'm happy I dropped the television series after Daenerys scene in the tower of the mages. At this point, I will stick, with the books and that's it.
You can tell just how much heart was put into this trilogy. “We had no interest in putting our messages into this movie. But we thought we should honor Tolkien by putting his message into it” -Peter Jackson, 2002 And basically zero heart was put into Rings of Power… And this trilogy is still a masterpiece in 2024 :)

Much better battle than the siege of Gondor where PJ completely missed the dark grueling attack and the dread of the witch king destroying the door and facing Gandalf in the court in front of Grond. Going from the epic of Helm to the total nonsense with the invincible ghosts as the epitome was very, very rough.
It was perfect. No music, just the sound of rain and raw man(or I should say, Uruk'hai)power. Sure, there's CGI(The days of films like Gettysburg or Ben Hur where hollywood was willing to go through the effort and cost of thousands of exrtas is long gone despite the fact that they make far, far more money than they ever did), but just like the cavalry charge in RotK, there's just some things you can't emulate without the real deal, and I'm glad Peter Jackson got real people, real horses, etc to fill up a good chunk of that crowd and make the CGI believable.
seeing this in theatre as a kid with my dad, brother and cousins will probably always go down as best thing I ever watched in history. you just had to be there
Now this is how you do a great battle scene. First: it's set in a simply structured location. The places this setting has are a few, so that we can easily identify where each shot takes place. It also helps that the movie gives you time to get familiar with where everything is before the action starts. Second: the goal our heroes have is made clear with each segment this battle has. We know why they are doing what they are doing, because we understand what the opposing side is trying to do. Third: the fight is not composed of moments of our heroes doing well coreographed stunts that are there just to look cool. Every action they take has a reason and cause. For example, Legolas doesn't slide down those stairs just because he wanted to show off. He did that because he needed to get there fast, without disturbing his aim. Fourth: the way it's edited to flow from one segment to another without there being a break in the middle. That makes it feel like a real battle is going on and helps us to understand how intense everything is. Those are 4 things that together make this one of the greatest cinematic battle scenes. It's strange how even with today's 300 million dollar budget blockbusters we still don't see anything like this.
Another brilliant thing this battle does, which might seem counter intuitive, is the cutaways to the Entmoot. Without those, if it was just one long 30 minute battle, we would get bored. Instead every time it cuts away to the Ents being slow and obstinate we are both eager to get back to the fight and right there with Merry and Pippin: "Come on! The good guys are dying, you got to help them!"
Why are they inside the castle? They should go outside. Also get rid of bows and arrows, and have a suicide cavalry charge right at the beginning. Oh wait, they aren't idiots and used that old nogging and the writers actually planned a good battle.
You can have one billion dollars to make the biggest show in the world, and make it the most pleasing to witness...It STILL can't even measure up to these legendary films 20 years later. Nothing will ever surpasse them
"Hey, King Theoden, I've got an idea. Let's put the bulk of our troops OUTSIDE the castle walls, including our ballistic weapons. Then, we send out our best cavalrymen in a suicide run by themselves against a vastly numerically superior enemy. Huh, what do you think?" "You're fired." "Well, screw you. I'm going to go start my own fantasy kingdom, with gambling, and hookers!"
Legolas: "Their armour is weak at the neck, and beneath the arms" Elves who are likely thousands of years old, been in numerous battles, and who's extremely keen eyes, even in the dark of night, can clearly see the neck and armpits are only covered by chainmail: "Thanks captain obvious!"
I know u r joking... Just for my peace of mind, not all elves are thousand years old, elves can be killed in battle u know... And also in battle like this, with probably 1:6 enemy ratio, chances of winning were slim, I think morale would be pretty low and times like this even basic common sense is lost or overlooked... That's why it is Generals are so imp
I love how Gimli was so proud at the fact that he took out two of them, then Legolas said "I am on Seventeen". That's when the sibling rivalry kicks in 🤣and he went into maximum mode.
2:31 thus, the legend is born. This dude is actually the one who started the domino effect, he released the arrow > the war started> the uruk hai losing their mind and started to be aggressive > the rohirrim appeared > Rohan won > Isengard lost > Mordor was the only powerhouse left > Mordor attacked Gondor > Rohan helped gondor, since they won against Isengard (because of this legend) > Gondor and Rohan alliances win the war > Gondor and Rohan distracted Mordor forces> the ring destroyed. All this because of this guy. Legend said if Frodo gave the ring to him, he would attach the ring to his arrow, and fire it straight to the mountain of doom
I like how the old man that shot that first orc looked all worried as if he was at fault for "throwing the first punch" and therefore starting the battle. There was gonna be a battle no matter what lol
So true! I was always much more made up that he actually took one down with his accidental misfire than just hit plate armour and just piss one off lol
I think the idea was, that they believed Gandalfs promise that he will come in the morning with support, so prolonging the battle start was a good idea, and that shot cut short the theatrics that Uruk-hai were doing. Its probably a miniscule difference, but still they were trying to maximize their chances. Helms Deep was a strong fortress, but that army was not to be taken lightly.
This battle is pure chaos and I absolutely love it. Everyone is throwing hands and everyone is catching hands. We’ll never see anything like this again.
The elves nocking their arrows is captivating and so different from the Rohirim. Haldir’s form is unreal. It’s so visually pleasing and gives me chills before this epic battle.
A lot of that is due to the extras playing the elves are New Zealand Army OTC Cadets, while the extras playing most of the Rohirim are just normal people. This I think really fits well with the styles of the two forces in play very well.
Of course, those are master archers with centuries of training. And most of the Men aren't even Rohirrim, they show up later with Gandalf. Mostly peasants
@@KapBBit What's your point? I wasn't wondering why. I'm aware of why. I was simply stating that the difference is huge and that it's visually pleasing lol

Wait, what? There is actually a better strategy than a suicide cavalry charge, putting catapults on the frontline, and putting troops in front of defenses?
Also, what was up with how dark it was. In LOTR a battle can be fought at night without you needing to increase the contrast to work out what is going on.
I mean, these guys still have the problem of ogling at the enemy force instead of bombarding them with arrows and catapults before they get close, but yeah.

@Variant _ because arrows have an optimal range and a max range. That old guy was lucky with his shot. Most of the volley would be coordinated for the optimal range. Aragorn told to to hold, because if every shmuck released after that first shot, most of the volley could be wasted.

This was made in 2002, let that sink in for a moment and appreciate the mastery and craftsmanship that has gone in to this, dozens of years a head of time. Game of thrones shouldn't have dared to bring up such a comparison to their absolute garbage of a battle. No wonder Maisie Williams was walking around near the centre of London not knowing what the actual hell she had just read.
It was Emilia Clarke who did this, after she read the final script. She was so disappointed as disillusioned that she just left her house and wandered around for a while. F*ck you D and D, you absolutely god-rotting dumb bastards. You SUCK.
I love how powerful the Uruk-hai are shown, they’re not like typical Orcs who get mowed down by Elves as we see in the Prologue and Hobbit films, the Uruk-hai are actually strong enough and skilled enough to outfight and overpower a Galadhrim in single combat, goes to show how Saruman perfected Orcs, Uruk-hai are truly the ultimate Orc, not even Sauron or Morgoth could create such a soldier capable of actually cutting down Elves in such a fashion, I know in the books no Elves fought at Helm’s Deep, and the Galadhrim aren’t quite as deadly as the Noldor of Rivendell or Lindon, but I think if Saruman’s Uruk-hai did meet these Elves, they’d still win. It’s lucky for Middle Earth Saruman didn’t have the power and means to pump out Uruk-hai on a scale that Sauron could, even Sauron’s Uruks weren’t as skilled and strong as Saruman’s. Saruman definitely took the time in teaching them all the tactics and methods of their enemies, using thick steel Shields and plate armour to deflect Elven arrows and Rohirrim axes and swords, scimitars specifically designed to dismount a rider from his horse, Pikes with distance, crossbows with superior power and accuracy to even the finest Elven archers. I love how Jackson and Weta took the effort to give every group of Orcs their own culture and identity.

Indeed, there are only CGI of the arrow volley-fire, the troops in the "very wide shot" of the battle like when the "Orc folks" marching, yelling & charing outside the wall. Everythings else from the castle model ( 3 of them btw ) to every close-up shot, some decent view of the 2 side fighting is all people & practical use. Event the explosion of the wall was a real, of the small castle model. They only blow it up once, so it was a "one take shot". The "Urukai" just mean "Orc folks" in orcs language, or "black speech".
That's not true at all. If you watch the behind the scenes, they had like 30 or 40 Uruk-Hai. WETA actually came up with some AI that made armies of CG soldiers move in somewhat realistic formations. That's why it looks so good.

One of my favourite parts of this battle is 4:02 when the uruk berserkers on the ladders are basically going first to clear a path, I've always been terrified of how strong they were, one of them takes out a group of 3 or 4 elves with one swing!
By the lore, berserkers weighted over 350lbs and If you look closely on their backs, you can see blood all over. In lore, right before battle, their helms were filled with human blood and put on the heads….blood flowed all over their head and body and after smell it and taste it, uruks becomes frenzy, completely immune to pain and fear with the strenght of 4 men.
Only thing is no one is against you. This is the best battle in lotr, and of all movies ever made. Even Star Wars, which is incredibly hard to compare due to genre
if the berserkers could do that to elves, imagine the kill count if they fought gondorian soldiers especially with how gondor fought in return of the king, where a lot of them looked like they didn't know how to fight and some were killed so easily without any effort.
This battle scene has scared the shit.out of me when i was a kid. I even dreamt of orcs roaming and marching around our village and we are hiding inside our houses.

Gimli is too short for the crossbowmen to hit him behind the wall even if they knew he's there, which also means Uruks climbing up don't see him. And there they are trying to jump on the wall only to get greeted by an armored midget with an axe.

seeing this in theatre as a kid with my dad, brother and cousins will probably always go down as best thing I ever watched in history. you just had to be there
Now this is how you do a great battle scene.

Instead every time it cuts away to the Ents being slow and obstinate we are both eager to get back to the fight and right there with Merry and Pippin: "Come on!
Yep, this guy was the real hero

Oh right Uruk-hai was there to stare the fort down for 3 weeks and go play COD if this guy didn't shoot the arrow. Fucking Domino mate!
This is the man that could’ve single handedly defeat Sauron
I always viewed it as enraging them. Like berserk mode when they get angry.
It's probably the most realistic thing for warbows, it is hard to hold it the string that long. Hollywood tho.
That old man is the bowmaster of Rohan.
Everytime I watch this opening battle and that trembling old man kill that uruk -hai I tell myself:

The elves nocking their arrows is captivating and so different from the Rohirim. Haldir’s form is unreal. It’s so visually pleasing and gives me chills before this epic battle.
A lot of that is due to the extras playing the elves are New Zealand Army OTC Cadets, while the extras playing most of the Rohirim are just normal people.
This I think really fits well with the styles of the two forces in play very well.
Why don't elves have such useless helmets, even masks?
Of course, those are master archers with centuries of training. And most of the Men aren't even Rohirrim, they show up later with Gandalf. Mostly peasants

@Variant _ because arrows have an optimal range and a max range. That old guy was lucky with his shot. Most of the volley would be coordinated for the optimal range.
Aragorn told to to hold, because if every shmuck released after that first shot, most of the volley could be wasted.

Yup which made this movie much more amazing
Indeed, there are only CGI of the arrow volley-fire, the troops in the "very wide shot" of the battle like when the "Orc folks" marching, yelling & charing outside the wall. Everythings else from the castle model ( 3 of them btw ) to every close-up shot, some decent view of the 2 side fighting is all people & practical use. Event the explosion of the wall was a real, of the small castle model. They only blow it up once, so it was a "one take shot".
The "Urukai" just mean "Orc folks" in orcs language, or "black speech".
okay
That's not true at all. If you watch the behind the scenes, they had like 30 or 40 Uruk-Hai. WETA actually came up with some AI that made armies of CG soldiers move in somewhat realistic formations. That's why it looks so good.

Bloodlust
By the lore, berserkers weighted over 350lbs and If you look closely on their backs, you can see blood all over. In lore, right before battle, their helms were filled with human blood and put on the heads….blood flowed all over their head and body and after smell it and taste it, uruks becomes frenzy, completely immune to pain and fear with the strenght of 4 men.
Only thing is no one is against you. This is the best battle in lotr, and of all movies ever made. Even Star Wars, which is incredibly hard to compare due to genre
