    Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home On the east coast of America, alligators and humans have learned to co-exist together, most dramatically in some of the golf courses across Florida and South Carolina.
    In the last 30 years the world's urban areas have almost tripled in size, changing at a rate wildlife has never experienced before. As cities are built, animals are pushed out of their natural homes. Their stories are the most surprising and captivating of all. Today, these 'wild outcasts' find themselves fighting for their place in a land that once belonged to them.

      You have concrete ants living in sidewalks, crows, ravens, pigeons, and seagulls turning the cities into there new habitats. Monkeys in Asia have also moved into the cities (and in fact were hurt by the REDUCTION of human activity as a result of COVID), and lastly you have the alligators moving into American Golf Courses and turning the water hazards into their own personal domains.
      It goes to show that humans, even now, are just as much a part of nature as any other organism.

      Seriously? I live in Florida. We assume there are alligators in every body of fresh water. There are far more alligators now than there were 40 or 50 years ago. When I fish in fresh water, I see dozens of them in any lake or river. The fact is that an alligator can pretty quickly make meals of the fish and turtles in a small pond (like a water hazard) and move on to another one. In a body of water large enough for a sustainable population of turtles, fish and birds (and even smaller alligators) they do very well. It doesn't matter if the small pond is on a golf course, or in the middle of the jungle. There is simply not enough food for a gator in a small pond and they have to move on after a short time.
      Alligators have little effect on our lives, though anyone is a fool if they are having their dogs chase sticks thrown into rivers or lakes. I frequently swim in rivers and springs in state parks. In a state with the third highest population of people and the highest population of alligators, alligator attacks on people are exceedingly rare. It is no more dangerous than swimming in the ocean (where it is not unusual to see sharks, check out RUclips videos of drone footage of New Smyrna Beach where I go swimming) ) and less dangerous than golfing where more golfers are killed by lightning than by gators.

    Alligators are one of the oldest unchanged organisms on the planet. They've survived the ice age, the extinction of the dinosaurs, and now, the most dreadful scourge the planet has faced yet: golfers.
    It's brilliant really, your average floridian golfer is old and slow, and totally defenseless once separated from their hoverrounds.

    • @bromaro
      @bromaro 3 года назад +54

      This is not true. Crocodilians survived the k-t extinction event, alligators and crocodiles hadn’t evolved yet. And also there is no extinction of dinosaurs as birds are considered maniraptoran theropod dinosaurs. We just refer to all the dinosaurs that went extinct because of the k-t extinction event and before it as non-avian dinosaurs, with the modern linage being referred to as birds

      Andrew Crowley first of all deinonsuchus is a theropod dinosaur and not a crocodilian. Second alligators and crocodiles both evolved after the kt extinction and not before it. Third Sarcosuchus is not a crocodile, you can literally search this up. It is related to crocodylia which is the Clade containing alligators but not apart of it. You can just search “crocodile” and see that they evolved 55 million years ago, which is far after Sarcosuchus existed.

      Actually they've changed a lot. For one they used to be much bigger. There was a 35-40 foot alligator relative in North America that may have ambush-hunted dinosaurs at the edge of water sources like Nile Crocodiles hunt water buffalo today. There also used to be terrestrial croc relatives that lived and hunted on land, adorable pug-sized crocodiles that ate plants or were omnivorous, and crocodile relatives that were completely marine, lost their scales, and swam in the ocean like sharks. Crocs, gators, and gharials are all that's left of a very diverse group of reptiles.

    Also, love how this video doesn't make these amazing creatures out to be man-eaters of crazy killing machines. Alligators are not as aggressive as the media likes to portray then as. They are simple creatures who go about minding their own business. They do whatever they can to avoid humans due to a natural fear of them. This video did a great job at showing how humans and alligators can coexist peacefully.

There’s this sorta respect the golfers and the gators have with one another it’s strange. @John Doe No, they can be harmful, and yes I'd stay away from them, a reasonable distance. I guess it's hard to predict a large reptile's behavior, even if they seem calm. They can make short dashes at max 11 mph on land, but swim about 20 mph and prefer to chase prey in the water. Crocodiles look like alligators but are very different species, from different "families" in the animal kingdom. The American crocodile seems to be as aggressive as the alligator (not as bad as other crocs). All this info is from the internet. I wouldn't take a dip in an estuary in Australia, that's for sure.

    So nice to see a story about gators and humans coexisting peacefully. Too often the media fall prey to the temptation to demonize gators and present these magnificent creatures in the scariest possible light.

      The US is the only place where alligators functionally exist anymore. They have a stable population of about 5 million. The only other nation with alligators is China, which has nearly hunted them to extinction. China literally has about 20 alligators left. Alligators are not endangered in the US, they are thriving.

    • @jakeryan4545
      @jakeryan4545 3 года назад +5

      A lot of the bigger wild animals are actually doing really well right in the US (not all mind you, bison, wolves, and condors come to mind as some that are not). But for some large animals, including white tail deer, coyotes, and alligators it is estimated that there may actually be more now than when Europeans arrived. This isn't necessarily a good thing for the environment though, for example the white tail deer population explosion has an impact on certain native species of plants, which trickles through to insects, amphibians, birds, and other animals.
