5:10 phase 1\2 the boss 2:21 phase 3- pieces of the rocket fall from it and you have to dodge them 3:46 phase 4- the rocket falls and you have to escape it
This is basically what Michael and his team had to do in order to have different tracks for multiple acts. Just cut and rehash the same part of the previous parts. It was the result of rushed Time constraints.
my headcanon for this is that sonic is in a modified doomsday zone as super sonic chasing a rocket rather than the egg mobile, and then when the rocket is destroyed he has to dodge the pieces for ~30 seconds, and after that he gets sucked into the rocket and has to escape with a kill wall of debris constantly pursuing him as he platforms over parts of the rocket, between them, and extra obstacles before the rocket explodes and leaves the master emerald safe for collection
My headcanon: The true final fight against Big Arm, only for those who got all the Emeralds. Phase 1: The normal Big Arm fight, taking 4 hits to move on to phase 2 Phase 2: A pinch mode of sorts. Big Arm moves faster, and goes to the bottom of the screen more often. Another 4 hits is required to move on to phase 3 Phase 3: Instead of the Death Egg falling off of the platform, pieces of the rockets sending the Death Egg to space begin to crumble off. Dodge them for 30sec-1min to move on to phase 4 Phase 4: Pieces of the rockets continue to fall, but now at double speed. Now pieces of the Death Egg are starting to fall off, too. Dodge it for 1min to complete the boss and beat the game.
Hearing it like this in parts, then all together really gives the feel behind each instrument used. Its amazing. And now i really feel the "End of the world" vibe this song gives off for sure. Also probably because I am a little bit older too now, lol!
This theme fits the ending of Sonic 3 PERFECTLY. After you take out Robotnik's bowling ball thing and pillar of doom, you think you've finished the game, but then the sky goes dark and this music starts playing... And then Big Arms comes in and destroys you. It sounds so epic, like Sonic is in a losing battle but comes back from the brink of death to finish the job.
Interesting that channel 0 (the melody track) is almost painfully shrill on its own. But when mixed with all the harmony, the "shrilly" parts gets drowned out (or "smoothed" out?) by the other tracks, so it isn't that bad in the full thing.
I know nothing about music production, but it seems like these sonic games got more out of the genesis than any other. Some of these sub channels sound like your average genesis game, but all together sounds a real tune!

It uses Angel Island's bass guitar instrument and lacks those guitar-like instruments before the loop. Ironically, they were used in the prototype Angel Island as well, but were removed in the final.
@@omniscientbarebones The answer is literally right there, right there! Just above your reply! It's the instrumentation and the poor mixing. Nothing to do with DAC processing.
Winamp with the in_vgm.dll plugin will let you do this. In the 'muting' tab you'll be able to see the different channels and a check box next to them to mute them. YM2616 for most of the Genesis sound, and you'll have to go to the SN76496 for the 8-bit sounding channels (PSG 0, 1)
