Man back then they had to work so hard just to get a delay stereo effect on the melody. They had to use 2 channels just for that. For context, now days in a DAW you can just apply an effect like delay and the programs handles it for you. We have so much control over how our music sounds.
If the notes are short enough, you could get a delay effect in the same channel as the main melody. For instance, BGM 2 of the NES Silver Surfer game does that, as well as a few small instances in “The Rival” from Shovel Knight.
0:38 I see where people say that channel 4 sounds like a “western whistle” but the way I’ve always heard it was as a subtle nod to the original Tarzan yell and the way it fluctuates in a similar manner in the Aquatic Ruin. You are in a forested area after all.
To be fair, the "western whistle" itself is based on a couple guys going "aa-AA aa-AA aaaahh" The theme song for the Good Bad & Ugly does use the whistle, but I don't think the version heard in the original film has the flute play the full "four notes then fall." In other words, if the yell heard in Good Bad & Ugly was based in part on what's known as the Tarzan yell, then in a roundabout way, both interpretations would be correct. Personally, I think it could very well be referencing both. GBU is based in Mexico, part of Latin America, and Aquatic Ruin is very much a Latin tune. However, as you said, Aquatic Ruin is based in a sort of rainforest, jungle-like area.
@@tahutoa I see your point, but I’d connect the little fluctuations as a Tazarn thing (being in a tropical rainforest as you referred to it) and the music following a Spanish vibe considering the Amazon Rainforest is in South America.
@@BasedPureblood I mean, it's the main melody, of course it's strong... Personally, I'll go with the counter-melody and harmony right at the the beginning on channel 3
This and Hill Top are definitely my favourites in the entire game. Aquatic Ruin because the music and visuals are really nice and it's relaxing to play, and Hill Top for the visuals and music too, and it's really fun too.
I feel bad for knowing 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' music reference in Mirage Saloon in no time but it took me a bajillion years to remember it from this, DESPITE ME PLAYING SONIC 2 FOR MUCH LONGER THAN SONIC MANIA AND THIS BEING MY FAVORITE TRACK!
I love those deconstructions! Can definitely hear some lambada and samba influences in there. All in all, Sonic compostions are beautifully inspired. Marble Zone from Sonic 1 would be an interesting candidate for deconstruction as well.
This song is amazing when deconstructed. Without channels 1 and 2 it's like a completely different song. The jungle/wilderness vibe is gone and it sounds very samba. Channel 3 definitely has big time Latin flair. Super cool.
Channel 4 is just a sine wave, very interesting. And I didn't notice it before listening to this deconstruction, especially since there is a square wave played on top of it.
I have the some issue. The rythym and drums suggest salsa, while the instrumentation gives an old western vibe. I would lean further toward the salsa/latin end. The bassline, chord progression and rythym are the majority of the song and they're very salsa/latin.
Channel 3 alone sounds almost like the beginning of an act 2 remix As time goes on more of the melody would get added in, starting with channel 1, so forth and so on
SHAME ON ME FOR FALLING IN THE GUNK IN CHEMICAL PLANT BEFORE MAKING IT HERE I WOULD JUST STAND THERE WAITING FOR THE GOSHDARN PLATFORM ID JUMP AND FALL!
I've been watching through a tone of these and they are amazing to watch since I'm trying to learn more about FM synthesis. One recent tidbit I discovered is that FM instruments sound really good with reverb added, and it looks like most of the Sonic songs have one of the FM channels dedicate to providing some reverb to one of the other channels. It's happening with the "lead" instrument here (Channel 2), happens in a bunch of S3K stuff too. Maybe that's part of the Sonic secret sauce.
Indeed. When I think of the essence of Sonic soundtracks, it's always about the pumpin' funky bass, harmonic support from varied instruments alternating in two channels, and the 'reverbed' leads. And boy this sauce delivered.
People always said this sounded very western and tango, but I've always viewed as very tribal and Indian like like especially this flute noise here 0:38
Thanks for this. This being one of my favourite tracks of the game I don't get the second and third bits of this breakdown. They could have been combined or put together with the third so as not to lose the awesome groove set by the first segment. Would love to hear some kind of remake! Cheers!
Sometimes SALSAesque, sometimes LAMBADAesque, sometimes SPANISHesque. It's hard to get more latin than this. I wished the levels weren't that short. Amazing work.
