One of the most ambitious pieces from the 16bit era period I think. It's full of crazy tricks to push past the sound chips limitations, like the little super high frequency sat above the kick to give it more punch.

@@rassilontdavros3004 they did have a varied music team for sonic 3, i'd say this is definitely one of the more "mj crew"-driven tracks. there's expertise in there, just pointed in a different direction than most genesis games (something that's common in the sonic 3 soundtrack)
There is just too much funky soul in this track. MJ really didn't have to do much did he? The kicks in Knux's drums.... this game came out out the right time it did man. You don't hear stuff like this anymore.
When it comes to the DAC this is the most complex track out of all of the genisis games. Not only did it use tons and tons of samples it also needed another channel just to fit it all of it

And it turns out none of this is correct. Michael Jackson himself did not have any say in the soundtrack of the game. However, his manager and sound mixer did. As in, the one that was responsible for mixing his tracks, producing them, and the very person that handles his levels and mixing on stage. He had a couple of things to say and a a couple of pointers, but in general he didn't have much handle on the soundtrack. He was much too busy to wearing a producing music to actually spend any substantial amount of time on the project. However, his understudies and his manager Brad certainly did. In other words: BRAD WHAT CHU GONNA DO? JOBS GONE!
I´m not sure if MJ composed other muisic levels, but I'm almost 100% sure that he composed this one, Is so weird the amount of samples that it has, also how the psg channel is used for the main melody, and It is the only song that isn't playing when you play with the sonic and knuckles lock on

According to Roger Hector's and Brad Buxer's comments there was a whole composed MJ soundtrack comprised of 41 songs, of which we currently have only 10 (CNZ1/2, ICZ1/2, LBZ1/2 the competition mode menu theme, the Miniboss theme, Knuckles' theme and the credits music)
Dont forget if you access the sonic3 level select before sonic&knuckles was even released all the songs from both games had already been composed and uploaded to sonic3, only main songs that changed/missing where the mini boss/knuckles themes
No they're not. I looked up the drum notation. Not the same at all. Even listened to them isolated in just drum n bass. They only use snares at similar times but not even the same. Idk where you got that info from but the drums are not the same AT ALL.

So, I guess those are TR-808 drum and snare samples on Channel 0, while the DAC handles everything else? Smart move. Also, those orchestra hit samples on the DAC are great. And Channel 1. EDIT: Those aren't samples, the YM2612 is making those waveforms. Neat.
The YM2612 has 6 channels of 4 operator FM synthesis. The sixth channel could be swapped out for an onboard DAC, which could handle 8-bit unassigned ADPCM samples. The 6th FM channel and the DAC are the same channel, just utilizing something different. Like I mentioned, Channel 0 is the main kick and snare, while the DAC handles all the MJ shouts, claps, and orchestra hits.
when i was 4yo, i would go to Ice Cap zone and quickly get to the miniboss to listen to this. Ice Cap has the only miniboss in the game with blindzones that allow you to stand in one place and do nothing indefinitely so i would do just that, relax and vibe to this...well, at least until i was about to run out of time

They wanted to add more percussion, but the Genesis's chiptune YAMAHA doesn't allow more than 1 noise at the same time in the channel. Also, knowing Deflemask, they used Light Kick, not Bass.

This certainly is weirdly constructed compared to most tunes posted here, with a much greater part of the melody on the DAC and PSG channels.
