@ 7:32 I am so glad that someone other than myself pays that close attention to detail that a simple sound effect of passing a goal, although post may seem miniscule to most, but to those that were either there when this game was released or those that are analytical when it comes to detail that even the smallest sound effect matters... I've seen some people not caring that the release of the TMNT arcade game by Arcade 1UP say that it doesn't matter that they rerecorded the main theme song rather than using the original recording of it due to a licensing issue. That's a "MAJOR" detail issue to me... Thank goodness for the MAME emulator 😁
You've got a well constructed vid about 3's situation here, I love the explanation of the music/rerelease problems. However, I don't think the game has a real "definitive" version yet. This comes to its conclusion partly on AIR being the most "legal" option, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the end-all version of the game to play. AIR is a great game and certainly has the potential for becoming the definitive version, but right now it's still a fight between that, S3C and modded S&KC: Each has their own unique features and (aside from 3C) modding systems to offer - naming one of them as the definitive version at the moment relies more heavily on opinion than say, Sonic Adventure (Which has mods covering everything you can think of on PC). Eg: Even considering the mods available right now AIR has yet to include say, 3C's Flying Battery customization and the scene it adds between LBZ-MHZ, nor does it offer the extensive music customization offered by modded S&KC. They can be added, but that's why right now it only has the potential to be rather than being the definitive version.
This is the first video I've seen from your channel and the thing that stands out greatly to me is the fantastic production value in your videos. It's so professional and clean.
Very nice and well researched history section! There's just one thing: The replacement compositions in The Sonic & Knuckles Collection (PC) weren't created just for the PC port; they're actually prototype compositions from before the Michael Jackson collaboration. The recently documented prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Nov 3, 1993 prototype) proves as such. *EDIT:* Whoops, I missed your note at the end. Sorry.
the Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection on the GameCube have every Genesis and nearly every Game Gear Sonic game, so it hurts that they're not doing that anymore :/
All points considered here, how did the mega collection and Sonic Jam on the Saturn escape the legal ire. At some point there has to be a new collection. I would gladly pay for a new legal retro engine version.
Fantastic video, great job on making everything so clear and informative. I appreciate your production values in terms of editing and motion graphics as well. Long live Sonic 3!
Yeah that was pretty recent though he might have started making this video before it was known. Definitely further supports the idea though that MJ, and Buxer were involved in the music late in the project. My guess is they started replacing the tracks. MJ pulled out of the project for whatever reason towards the end. And in the mad rush to finish the game on time they left the music he worked on in it. Later when the PC version was made they used the original beta music instead.
Thing is, lets say they can't release due to the beta versions music not being fully finished and sound bad. Well the PC version already did that, so it's literally already done, if not without a potential remix. It just sounds like sega doesn't understand or doesn't want to do the work. Despite that Sonic 3 on it's own is perfect for a standalone release if they include all the feature the game could have. For example the PC version of sonic 3 and knuckles lets you choose which of the 3 games you want, sonic 3, sonic & knuckles or sonic 3 & knuckles. Then we have the option for either 2 games or the pc/beta soundtrack, the original or official release level layouts (like launch base being after carnival nights), the option for big arms to be added or removed in sonic 3 and knuckles along with many more! Sounds like good value for 1 game right? That without those crazy ideas of adding things like the dropdash back into the game (yes it was in sonic 3); maybe adding mania graphics, sonic 2 sprites and more!
Now that Sonic Origins has been released, you can now play Sonic 3. Sure, some musics are different from the original version, but it doesn't bother me that much. I'm just glad I got to play and beat the game. Also, I've got the Sonic Jam version of the game on Sega Saturn which has the original background musics some of which Michael Jackson was involved in, but I didn't play it quite properly. I only played and beat the Sonic Origins version.
Aw man, its a shame that this video doesnt include information about the recently discovered Sonic 3 Prototype that bassically answers EVERYTHING about the music concerns regarding the game. But anyways, i completely forgot about AIR, i heard about it when it was brand new and i instantly forgot about it, but now i have an excuse to actually give it a try!
Sonic 3 air is awesome however it has a bit of controller issues, the sega mini USB controller works in gameplay but not in menus so u must use the keyboard for menus... And if u have a original sega controller with a usb converter cable it workd in menus but not in gameplay because for some reason it controls tails also and that leads to issues... Having that said i havent tried any input translator but "Joy to key" so mabye it works better with another program that can decode controller inputs better.
carnival night zone had a LITERAL direct sample of Jam from MJ's Dangerous album. Its surprising you missed that one out as it was the definitive sample to kick off the whole MJ/S3 connection. Actually discovered by me, Ben2k9 (my old alias)
There is still one re-release you forgot about. Sonic 3 WAS included in Sonic Mega Collection + actually, and its a great port! Unedited soundtrack too!
I used to have the original Sonic Mega Collection back on the GameCube and Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are included in that collection too and was a great way to experience that game, but sadly those collections are super expensive nowadays.

now with decomp of the mobile ports exist, now they are natively playeble on pc and now there are mods like sonic 1 forever and sonic 2 absolute that adds even more features and they let you use secret level select options in a saved game

The closest I can get to playing Retro Engine S1 and S2 on my PC is via scrcpy, a free, open-source phone mirroring program. And I can apparently play them with my keyboard.
Nah, I'm sticking with scrcpy. It's a good, lighter alternative to emulators if you only play like 1-2 mobile games at a time. I only play S2 and TerraGenesis atm. And I can easily play the same saves while away from my PC. It's also a phone remote control that lets me make calls and messages or check for messages and notifs w/o having to leave my keyboard. Haha.
Sonic 3 AIR looks like the best version. While S3C is certainly a very cool experience, it does go into fangame territory, whereas Sonic 3 AIR is simply remastering the game which is exactly what I want. Same with Sonic 1 and 2. I really don't enjoy playing games on my phone. 😆 Nice video, man.
Excellent video! FYI: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is also still available on Xbox Marketplace for the Xbox 360 and it's compatible with the Xbox One. Your video just answered a question I had in mind... I often wondered why is it still available there and I checked the release date (6/10/2009) which also predates the lawsuit.
It saddens me that sega had forgotten about sonic 3 for the longest time its one of my favorite entries in the 16bit sonic series of games hopefully one of these days We get a much-needed proper release of the game with all of the oringal tracks of music that Michele Jackson composed but untill that happens all we can do is hope for the best
Well, now that Sonic Origins is coming out, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles is coming out on it, we can finally play Sonic 3 again soon… although it will not be including the music done by MJ’s team and will instead use the music that was present in the beta, recomposed by Jun Senoue. I wonder if it will become the definitive Sonic 3 version despite the lack of the original Genesis music, since Stealth is working on it to get it up to par with the Retro Engine remakes of previous games.
Great video. You ought to have titled it differently, because when I saw the title I just thought "A.I.R., duh", but you went so much deeper than that. Wish there were better ways to play the Retro engine versions of Sonic 1+2, because there are other problems that come with controls, there are other problems that come with playing on mobile, mostly related to screen size and stuff.
One more word: On the Steam workshop mods, you can use the in game "quick save" feature. I think it needs to be mapped to a key first, and is used by holding down the key until a "loading" animation completes (I suppose this minimizes risk of accidental quick saves) Alternatively, one can fish the hacks out of the Steamworks folders, and use in an external emulator. They're often unmarked, so this could be a hassle if you use a lot of mods.
Idk why Sega just doesn't try to settle out of court. The money they'd make from an updated port/emulation of S3&K would far surpass whatever they need to pay the original composers smh Sega
Doubtful. After a creator is dead the heirs want cheques. Big cheques. And an old platformer could make some money, but not that much. Steam takes a meaty cut, so that $2 game means Sega gets $1. And if Michael's estate wants $2 million and a percentage, there goes any profit.
Michael Jackson lost it 'cuz he wasn't able to include any "HEE-HEE's" and "SHAMOANA's" in Sonic 3 due to the Sega Genesis' audio limitations, so he moonwalked the hell outta the project. 🕺-------------->🚶

TheHumanSonikku the government doesn’t care much about Rom downloads as much as they do movie and CD downloads, because Hollywood has always had the government in their pocket.
In a perfect world, the entire Sega Ages collection on the Switch would see a physical release on all platforms (and PC) and the upcoming Origins collection would feature both Whitehead's remasters and M2's improved original versions to have the ultimate Sonic experience.
Both Sonic 3 and S3&K were released with all original music in the "Sonic Mega Collection Plus" for PS2, released in Nov, 2002. This means it couldn't be an association or rights dispute issue, as that would have precluded its release with those music tracks, as well. For the difference between PC port vs other systems ports re music / sound issues, it is more likely, PC ports may not have been able to correctly play those particular music files and Sega didn't have the technical foundation to properly port those particular tracks in time for release schedule and thus had to go with a Plan B.
Now just seeing this and I’m extremely grateful for the info. One thing I’d like to add is for Sonic 1&2 android you could always use bluestacks to get the full monitor/controller experience with less hassle.
A Sonic 3 prototype came out a few months back featuring Genesis versions of the tracks that would eventually appear on S&K Collection. It suggests that these were the original tracks before Michael Jackson and his entourage joined the team. Not gonna lie, some of these like Launch Base Zone Act 2 and Carnival Night Act 2 are certified bops and better than the originals.
Why Sega released so many other versions of Sonic 3 with the Michael Jackson soundtrack intact is one of the great mysteries surrounding this game. Music licensing is a complex thing. It was long rumored that the music licensing for Sonic 1 and 2 were held up for a while, too. The musician behind those games, Masato Nakamura, was part of one of the biggest pop music bands in all of Japan. The rumor was that he was charging Sega huge licensing fees for using his Sonic music, but Sega had a loophole where as long as they left the music in its original format (the Genesis FM synthesizer) then they either had to pay reduced fees or they didn't have to pay any licensing fees at all. The way I understand it is, when it comes to music, you license the song itself and the PERFORMANCE of the song separately. So let's say you want to use Queen's "We Are the Champions." First, you pay to license the song itself, which is the notes and the lyrics. Then, on top of that, you also license Queen's actual performance of the song, meaning Freddie Mercury's voice, and the band members playing their instruments. In some cases, each band member is a separate performance you have to license individually, making their songs very expensive. It's possible that Sega thought they were safe as long as they left the music in its original, untouched Genesis FM Synthesizer format, because in theory, they own the performance. With Masato Nakamura's music for Sonic 1 and 2, he would compose the music at his studio, and then send the recordings to Sega, where Sega's sound engineering team would translate Nakamura's music to work on the Sega Genesis. In short, Nakamura owned the notes because he created the song, but Sega owned the performance because their sound engineers translated the music. This prevented any new versions of that classic Sonic music being generated. Sega could only use the original 16-bit versions. No remixes, no remasters. That seemed to change, as Sega apparently buried the hatchet with Masato Nakamura for the announcement of Sonic Generations. They had him on stage and that game was one of the first times Nakamura's music had been remixed possibly ever. Since then, Sega seems to have a much easier time using those songs in new projects, so maybe they bought the rights or something. We don't know if any of this is true with Michael Jackson's Sonic 3 music. If the people that worked with Michael are claiming that Sega owes them money, there's clearly some legal problem happening behind the scenes and it's tangled up the release of any new versions of Sonic 3. The Sonic Classic Collection on DS was released in 2010, and these legal threats are from 2012, so Sega released it before realizing there was a problem.
@@BlazeHedgehog I would just like to mention that numerous sonic 1 and 2 themes did appear in games remixed long before generations. Examples here would be Green hill remixes in Sonic advance 3 (2004), Sonic battle(2003) and Sonic adventure 2(2001)(and I would also like to mention that in 1996 huge parts of Green hills them were used for the song "Marry me"), Scrap brain zone ,Starlight zone and Sonic 1's and 2's boss themes in Advance 1 and of cause the by Masato Nakamura band performed song Sweet Sweet Sweet which was used as Sonic 2's ending theme for Sonic Story end theme in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. (and technically did even every track from Sonic 1 gets 2 remixes in Sonic Genesis on the GBA) And in fact did Sonic in Lego Dimensions not have any of his actual classic tracks because Travels Tail simply didn't had the right to them because unlike most tracks from 3d Blast and up does Sega not own any of them and as such aren't there included in the sonic License.

Nice PFP.
I start to feel like no one talks about Sonic Classic Collection for the DS, It had S3 and S3K on it and was basically my childhood
Carnival Night has the breakdown and a voice sample from Michael Jackson's Jam, and the Knuckles theme uses the base line from (iirc) Blood on the Dancefloor.
Carnival Night Zone included samples of Heavy D's verse were he says "Jam" from Michael Jackson's song from the Dangerous album, Jam.
You can play these mobile exclusive ports on PC too, but it will require an android "emulator" (usually it works more like a compatibility layer or virtual machine, but it's easier to call it an emulator). And it's legal too, as you can buy them as usual and the android OS is free.
An actual steam version would really be miles better tho
You can also play Sonic 1 & 2 Retro Engine versions on a PC using BlueStacks

Fun fact: now that the new beta has been leaked. It turns out the music in the SEGA PC version of sonic 3 and knuckles has actually the ORIGINAL music of sonic 3 and knuckles
Good job! This is an excellent piece to show anyone who isn't 100% familiar with Sonic's Genesis history and current status.
@ 7:32
I am so glad that someone other than myself pays that close attention to detail that a simple sound effect of passing a goal, although post may seem miniscule to most, but to those that were either there when this game was released or those that are analytical when it comes to detail that even the smallest sound effect matters...
I still say Sonic 3 Complete is the best version I've played.
The definitive version was released in 1994.
Hotobu Well it was until (somewhat) recently.
Honestly AIR is the most similar to a retro engine version of 3&K.
This is the first video I've seen from your channel and the thing that stands out greatly to me is the fantastic production value in your videos. It's so professional and clean.
Fun fact: the pc music of sonic 3 is actually really old, it was used in the VERY first prototypes of sonic 3
Great content, dude. Thoroughly researched and highly produced!
Wish I had all those in rom state at least
All points considered here, how did the mega collection and Sonic Jam on the Saturn escape the legal ire. At some point there has to be a new collection. I would gladly pay for a new legal retro engine version.

Wasn't there also beta leaks for sonic 3 where the music made by Jackson associates wasn't there, or was the PC version music
the beta leak had official vers of the pc tracks in the SG sound chip
Yeah that was pretty recent though he might have started making this video before it was known. Definitely further supports the idea though that MJ, and Buxer were involved in the music late in the project. My guess is they started replacing the tracks. MJ pulled out of the project for whatever reason towards the end. And in the mad rush to finish the game on time they left the music he worked on in it. Later when the PC version was made they used the original beta music instead.
The beta came out as he was editing the video. It's in the credits sequence @ 27:30
@@WakoDoodle ...so pretty much Sonic 3 Complete with the drop dash?

Sonic 3 air is awesome however it has a bit of controller issues, the sega mini USB controller works in gameplay but not in menus so u must use the keyboard for menus... And if u have a original sega controller with a usb converter cable it workd in menus but not in gameplay because for some reason it controls tails also and that leads to issues... The closest I can get to playing Retro Engine S1 and S2 on my PC is via scrcpy, a free, open-source phone mirroring program. And I can apparently play them with my keyboard.
Or, you know, via an Android emulator or something.

The special stage themes little details are more noticable but that's all i could really point out
One more word:
On the Steam workshop mods, you can use the in game "quick save" feature. I think it needs to be mapped to a key first, and is used by holding down the key until a "loading" animation completes (I suppose this minimizes risk of accidental quick saves)
Alternatively, one can fish the hacks out of the Steamworks folders, and use in an external emulator.

If you look carefully, I list Sonic Mega Collection near the start of the video.

the defininitive sonic 3 lies between sonic 3 air and s3c
with the modes of jam and the super sprites of s3c and competition mode
A Sonic 3 prototype came out a few months back featuring Genesis versions of the tracks that would eventually appear on S&K Collection. It suggests that these were the original tracks before Michael Jackson and his entourage joined the team.
Not gonna lie, some of these like Launch Base Zone Act 2 and Carnival Night Act 2 are certified bops and better than the originals.
The DS classic Collection included Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Every zone got to keep its original soundtrack. Do you know what that is?
BlazeHedgehog oh, that makes sense.
You seem to never half-ass anything, not even comment replies.
It was made in 2010 right? Maybe there was less risks for an handheld console
(and technically did even every track from Sonic 1 gets 2 remixes in Sonic Genesis on the GBA)
And in fact did Sonic in Lego Dimensions not have any of his actual classic tracks because Travels Tail simply didn't had the right to them because unlike most tracks from 3d Blast and up does Sega not own any of them and as such aren't there included in the sonic License.
@@BlazeHedgehog didn't they remix green hill zone in sa2?
