Thanks man! I tried to play my copy of Sonic R a couple of years ago but it just didn't work. Apparently it was something about how the game checks the PC's specs using loading times being too quick. Tried some suggestions like changing a line in the code that checks the speed, or playing in a specific dial windowed DirectX sandbox thing, and neither option had great success. But this looks like the answer I was hoping for!
A user by name of Showin recently released a Sonic R improvement mod that genuinely does a lot to fix many of the issues with the control scheme as well as rebalancing characters. Even has a final boss race added to the game against eggman, I’d recommend you check it out it’s pretty cool, would definitely be a good thing to add to a definitive version to play the game.

Thank you for posting this! I stumbled upon it at the perfect time and got everything working because of this video, right down to the sound mods and adding a wired controller. I had to change a few of the graphics settings after the initial setup but now it’s perfect! I just found your video for sonic adventure, looks a little tougher but that’s gonna be next for me. Thanks again!
I almost thought this was gonna be a joke video about how different the controls are but I'm really glad I watched this. :) Also if you use a VPN network you can connect via LAN with anyone connected to the exact same network.
The Xplosive Release also doubles as a CD- say for the first track screeching infernally at you. Honestly thought thank you for this tutorial. I ain't any good at this game but it's fun. (And I'm a smuck for the games music).
I first played the pc version back around 2002 and I didn't even know about the missing lighting effects. I also played it a couple years later on Gems Collection. Great video!
I got Sonic R for the Saturn that Christmas. Honestly having only 5 tracks wasn't unusual for the time. Sega Rally had what, 4? And the 4th one was really hard to unlock, so more like 3. Oh and it only had 3 cars. But it's still a fantastic game. Sonic R sometimes gets a bad rap but I love it. The only game that does 3D Sonic properly in my opinion. I never had any issues with the controls, unlike some. Better than the complete lack of control you seem to have in the recent games. And although he ran fast, it wasn't the absurd speeds the new games have. Which is honestly how it should be.
@@aluigiFromKart There are literally people out there who cannot play a game if it runs sub-60. It's utterly baffling to me having grown up on Super Mario 64 (30 fps), Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask (20 fps), countless 30 fps 7th gen games, and running whatever I could on a crap PC for years back before I could really get a job out of school and afford a big boy PC. I also totally didn't make a pretty bad jokey mock video about this topic on my channel. Totally didn't.
Professor Abrasive, the guy who's working on the device that will bypass the Saturn copy protection and allow you to run disc images from the port in the back, called the Satiator, said something to the effect of the Saturn's hardware only allowing certain data throughput speeds, so his device won't speed up load times. I imagine this is why Sonic R is hard capped at 30fps, because the hardware couldn't get data fast enough to do any better.
If anyone knows their way around XInput Plus, you can also improve modern XInput controller support for the game, allowing for proper D-pad and analog triggers support.
I dabbled with the whole "Making it 60fps" shit and really it was bad, the bots zoomed past while you are still the normal speed and all sound affects are doubled in speed. Its like everything around you is going twice as fast but you. yet again i only worked on it for about a week then stopped because of uni.
Alright so I watched this out of curiosity right to the end and saw your disc drive struggles...now hear me out, I know it's a nitpick, but: If you find any random trashed PC made in 2008 or later with a DVD drive chances are you've got a good replacement within 20 minutes of fiddling with dragging the broken machine's drive out, dragging your drive out of your machine and throwing the "new" drive in.

Tried some suggestions like changing a line in the code that checks the speed, or playing in a specific dial windowed DirectX sandbox thing, and neither option had great success. But this looks like the answer I was hoping for!
I never knew Sonic R was released on the PC, now I want it.
I played the pc version back in the day and was actually kind of sad i couldnt anymore, thanks!
I’ve never forgotten about this game after playing it at my cousins house 20+ years ago 😊
A user by name of Showin recently released a Sonic R improvement mod that genuinely does a lot to fix many of the issues with the control scheme as well as rebalancing characters. Even has a final boss race added to the game against eggman, I’d recommend you check it out it’s pretty cool, would definitely be a good thing to add to a definitive version to play the game.
i played the daylights out of this on my 486 laptop. at about 10 to 15 FPS most of the time.
lots of fun. glad to know an update is out to make it run on newer computers. thanks
bro i dont even have sonic r i just watched this because I always wanted to see what a better looking sonic r would look like and I'm glad I saw this!
I still have my sonic R disc, but when I played it on my old computer my save kept getting erased.
Unfortunately my new computer doesn't have a disc drive now.
Also if you use a VPN network you can connect via LAN with anyone connected to the exact same network.
You should also install the sonic r improvement mod
Edit: It makes the physics better and makes the characters more balanced
The Xplosive Release also doubles as a CD- say for the first track screeching infernally at you.
Honestly thought thank you for this tutorial. I ain't any good at this game but it's fun. (And I'm a smuck for the games music).
I first played the pc version back around 2002 and I didn't even know about the missing lighting effects. I also played it a couple years later on Gems Collection. Great video!
This is the only definitive way to play that actually worked 100%
Thank you so much. I love this game a lot.
1:02 one of the few sonic games that was released 1st in america form my knowlage
I actually never knew about the colored lighting because I grew up with the GameCube version
I'd love to play this game again. Will look into installing this sometime soon!
I love this guy's voice. It has that specific sound rage to it.
What does that even mean
@@BlazeHedgehog The way you pronounce syllables and letters, it's soothing.
I wonder if GameHut could take a look at the code to make it 60fps?
But why is it necesarry?
@@aluigiFromKart PC Mustard Race accepts no less
@@licentioushowler3400 what kind of bullcrap is that? >:0
@@licentioushowler3400 i once watched 4 60fps videos and got dizzy >:(
I like the "best way to play" videos. I hope more come out
Sonic R is a really fun and underrated spin-off in my opinion
Professor Abrasive, the guy who's working on the device that will bypass the Saturn copy protection and allow you to run disc images from the port in the back, called the Satiator, said something to the effect of the Saturn's hardware only allowing certain data throughput speeds, so his device won't speed up load times.
I imagine this is why Sonic R is hard capped at 30fps, because the hardware couldn't get data fast enough to do any better.
Thanks so much for this video, this is definitely a little better than playing it on a Sega Saturn emulator.
the way you say game banana is oddly satisfying
Can't wait for the "Definitive Way to Play Sonic Heroes"
i've never seen that rainbow stage before thats amazing!
my controller isn't working, not even using Steam, what can I do?
How do I set up controller to work for this game?
If anyone knows their way around XInput Plus, you can also improve modern XInput controller support for the game, allowing for proper D-pad and analog triggers support.
this is really amazing!
thank you i really love this game!
You are truly a hero
I dabbled with the whole "Making it 60fps" shit and really it was bad, the bots zoomed past while you are still the normal speed and all sound affects are doubled in speed. Its like everything around you is going twice as fast but you. yet again i only worked on it for about a week then stopped because of uni.
that is really weird. one would assume that your physics also get doubled alongside the bots.
So this is where the youtubers go to hang out
Sonic R has many problems but I love playing that game!
Alright so I watched this out of curiosity right to the end and saw your disc drive struggles...now hear me out, I know it's a nitpick, but:
If you find any random trashed PC made in 2008 or later with a DVD drive chances are you've got a good replacement within 20 minutes of fiddling with dragging the broken machine's drive out, dragging your drive out of your machine and throwing the "new" drive in.
Not a bad idea, really.
I have this on the Saturn, and I had trouble placing why the PC version looked so dull to me until now.
I love this game. Why do so many people hate it. It’s such a good time to just play, and that soundtrack OOOOOH BABY
I still think Sonic R has on of the best level desing of 3D Sonic games. Reach some shortcuts is almost like play 2D Sonic but in 3D.

WHAT?!?! Is was??!
I unironically played and loved this game and didn't know that.
Honestly Sonic R is a good game..................okay it's not my place to say weather or not it's objectively "Good" but i like it
Sonic R is the perfect example that there's not always a parallel between a game being good and an game being fun
legendary sonic fan right here.
is it gross that I have nostalgia for this game?
id stay up late playing sonic r on gems collection
We are who we are. No shame in being yourself. It's just a video game.
