Got mine last month, and I absolutely love it. Now that I’ve finally gotten Generations working properly on it, I have every Sonic game I want working on it going well. Best purchase I’ve made in years!

Well, Sonic Free Riders is now able to be emulated with the new controller patch version. We're now one step closer to all Sonic games playable on the Deck.
For Sonic Frontiers, it's worth noting that Valve had a Steam Deck booth at Tokyo Game Show and had Sonic Frontiers advertised as "coming soon" to Steam Deck with a big poster at their booth, so it's likely SEGA is working with Valve to get the game Deck Verified for day one. Sonic Forces also runs incredibly well on the Steam Deck (at max settings at 60 FPS), and since both games use Hedgehog Engine 2, I'd say that bodes well for Sonic Frontiers. Frontiers will be the more intensive game but I'm sure 60 FPS Medium settings would probably work fine for it, at the bare minimum. Also if you have an Xbox Series X or Series S, it's possible to remote to it using your Steam Deck. I did this to play Sonic Unleashed in particular at 60 FPS on my Steam Deck. I unfortunately could not figure out how to remote to my Xbox from outside of my home and don't know if that's possible, but it worked great within my home and it's a really nice way to play Sonic Unleashed at 60 FPS, certainly better than seeing the 720p resolution being blown up to a modern TV screen. The controls were extremely responsive too and I don't even have a great internet connection compared to most. This of course could be used to play any other Sonic games you have on your Xbox, and can even be used to play Sonic Speed Simulator since Roblox has an Xbox One version (I personally found Speed Simulator had really choppy performance running natively on the Steam Deck so I much preferred just remoting to the Xbox).
Imagine forgetting to showcase Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Pfffft....! Great video though! As well as showing off a great showcase for gaming versatility, I love how the Steam Deck is basically going to be a "gateway drug" into the world of Linux. Such a fantastic product!

It's worth noting that for sonic colors, the stutters are likely due to shader caching. Games not installed through steam won't have pre-compiled shaders, so they have to be built up during game play. Always results in stutters, but usually those stutters get better and stop eventually once enough of the shader cache is built

I haven't played too much of Project '06, but yes, Silver's campaign is indeed playable on Steam Deck. I'm also really glad you mentioned the Heroic Games Launcher as well. That was how I was able to get the Epic Games variants of the Kingdom Hearts games on the I.5 + II.5 Collection up and running. I’ve come from the future. It runs… fine. It works, but you have to tweak a couple things, and you get flickering at 60 FPS, so you’re stuck with 30 or 40 for now. Hopefully it gets patched a bit later to fix these things.
I think if I wanted to play sonic games on the Steam Deck, I think I'd be content with what I could get working. I don't have a steam deck, but it does seem like a good device that I could have fun with. I plan on getting one.
Linux support has changed drastically since I put my first disc with a generic MSI installler on it, and wine breaking back in 2015. I've been watching the scene for so long now. I'm happy with it.
If I had to guess, you lose all online access due to homebrew just being a no-go for console companies. Unless either Retroarch is officially on Series X or having a modded system doesn't affect Online play, out of which I both highly doubt. This is more of an example for how officially versatile the Deck is (Valve literally supports customizability) than it is an actual arguement cause some people just couldn't give less of a fuck for lack of Online. Same goes for stuff like no Netflix on Switch and so on.
@@angell6209 Good, that's one more thing I can note, then. The console scene has been all over the goddamn place for me ever since the 8th gen started. Way back (in Hungary) I got used to -90% of PS2s being modchipped -Sony bashing you out the ass for modding the at the time "unmoddable" PS3 -90% of Xbox 360s modchipped (but disabling online play) -no online on a modded PS4 system (plus the fact it was the first Sony console with paid online, marking the day I left the console scene) -The Xbox One refusing to run used copies Honestly, it was a rollercoaster clusterfuck if you ask me personally. So excuse me if I got so many things wrong in my original comment, I really have no idea what's going on, I even recently got informed that Nintendo's netcode is so absolute shite that if you're careful enough, you can go Online with a softmodded V1 model, and even with the rest using a modchip. The console scene is such a fuckfest that at this point I'm thankful I moved permanently to PC as my main platform.
@@EthanMallonee This is really interesting! I never would have thought you could officially get help from a Console company allowing you to do "modifications" (technically) to your system, or doing things you otherwise would be screwed for. Thank Chaomix for making this video today, because I always wondered in my head if any Sonic games from a different set of consoles can be played on a Steam Deck. Can you Make A Version with Fan Games? I know you did a few as a surprise, but I i want a whole video on it with 30+ fan games
What about Sonic Chronicles??? In your DS section you showed it in your steam library but when showing gameplay and naming the game titles you didn’t mention or showcase chronicles!!! What gives?
Such unfortunate timing, only a few weeks back MattKC helped with a decompilation of Sonic Runners and you could've highlighted that, but I'm sure you didn't know. News doesn't travel as fast as we think I'd nitpick some stuff, but eh. Perfectly solid showcase, and the fact it's your first experience with Linux isn't only a testament to the Deck's potential, but how far everyone has taken Linux since the mid 00s
12:07 have you heard of CodeBreaker? Grants 60fps/widescreen, which is rendered in widescreen then squashed to 720x480, which most consoles did to get widescreen before the PS3/360.
19:35 That's true, Xenia does not have Kinect support, yet. However with todays technology, the sensors in the Kinect are not required to obtain good enough data about your pose. One could reimplement the Kinect functions using Google's MediaPipe. On modern hardware the recognition should work with at least 20FPS making it good enough for most games (Kinect isn't much faster, IIRC).
Definitely planning on getting one! I have a few financial things to work through before I'm ready for one, but a Steam Deck is something I'm for sure excited about.
Thanks for the settings for SegaSonic Arcade. 🙂 I managed to get the PC versions of Sonic Riders and Sonic Heroes to run on the Steam Deck. Though the only real reason to use the PC versions over Gamecube emulation is to save on battery power. Either way works fine though.
That and also Dolphin on the Steam Deck has some horrible frame pacing issues. Gamescope will report a locked framerate, but frame times will still be wacky, even though it doesn't display it. Really has been a major disappointment for me personally.
You should check out the "Custom rcps3 sonic 06 build for steamdeck" Fully playable in gaming mode from start to finish. The ability to have Adventure 1-2, Heroes, Generations, 06, pretty much all of the franchise in this form factor is great!
I am sure this has already been brought up but I think its wild that the trackpad was bought up here in relation to sega sonic the hedgehog with being a good trackball replacement, *because that was the point of it originally* the original steam controller was designed with 2 Haptic Feedback trackpads because valve thought that a trackball would be the best Replacement for mouse movement on a controller (ok yes they thought motion would be better but due to negative perseption of motion controle at the time they chose to go with the trackball instead... before adding in a gyro anyway and everyone prefering to use that), but the Descision was made to switch it for trackpads that could emulate the feel of a Ball because that also allowed for the surface to be mapped to button contoles.
I've had my Steam Deck for 1,5 months and have been using it as a Linux tablet as much as I'm gaming on it. Both the hardware and software are extremely well thought out and to me it's very comfortable to use. I'm typing this entire comment with it's duel trackpad typing and have learned to use FlickStick on it. Software wise the Game Mode optimalisations are very impressive and Desktop Mode unsurprisingly is very usable, this being standard KDE Plasma with some added software to make it work with the weird inputs. It runs my current favourite games, namely Okami and Vintage Story, nearly perfectly and has over 5 hours of battery life in these titles and Desktop Mode. The combination of the interesting input hardware, specialised Linux OS, great performance and repairable hardware makes it my favourite device with a processor. There's nothing like it, it's both like the Linux tablet I've been trying to make for years and the gaming console I wanted in one reasonably priced package.

The opening and closing FMV's won't play either because those are connected to the Theater path. Nevertheless, these are small prices to pay to play these games portably.
Awesome video! I planned on getting a steam deck after the new year so now I have something else to look forward to with it!
5:08 as of right now, colors ultimate is on steam (i know this was from last year but I just wanted to avoid any confusion)
I got my steamdeck recently and as I've also been getting very into sonic recently I've actually been planning on doing the same running a bunch of sonic games on the deck, it's just really comfy having them on handheld, this has been a really useful vid thanks!.
I'm currently playing through generations to 100% but I was gonna try Adventure with the dreamcast mods sometime soon too.
Also hadn't heard of Emudeck till now, will def check it out.
Where do you get that money from?
Its over 1,500$
@@JWKing17 It's about £569 in the Uk for the best ver, it was def a steep price buuut I hadn't bought a console since the switch and have no interest in the PS5/Xbox so seemed like a good investment!

Cringe
my man forgot the 2nd best sonic game? "behind sonic schoolhouse of course". SONIC R!
Man I really hope it runs Frontiers good!
I think this video alone is enough of a reason for everyone to get a Steam Deck
Linux support has changed drastically since I put my first disc with a generic MSI installler on it, and wine breaking back in 2015. I've been watching the scene for so long now. I'm happy with it.
Actually runners can work same as a few other android ones, with a little thing called waydroid. Its a little non- user friendly at the moment though.
Man got sponsored by a korok 1:42
The Xbox Series X is also great when you consider that Unleashed runs perfectly on there and you can emulate most of these games on retro arch as well
If I had to guess, you lose all online access due to homebrew just being a no-go for console companies.
@@mark030a having a modded system doesn’t affect online play.
@@mark030a it isnt homebrew but it isnt official either
@@angell6209 Good, that's one more thing I can note, then.
The console scene has been all over the goddamn place for me ever since the 8th gen started.
Way back (in Hungary) I got used to
-90% of PS2s being modchipped
-Sony bashing you out the ass for modding the at the time "unmoddable" PS3
-90% of Xbox 360s modchipped (but disabling online play)
-no online on a modded PS4 system (plus the fact it was the first Sony console with paid online, marking the day I left the console scene)
-The Xbox One refusing to run used copies
Honestly, it was a rollercoaster clusterfuck if you ask me personally.
Closest thing that reminds me of this is Apple's dev mode that costs $100 to develop apps for iOS lol
I got a Deck recently, been playing a lot of Sonic the Fighters and Sonic Riders, it's a lot of fun
Great job on this, this is why i love your content. You always go all out
This is literally the video I wanted 😤😤😤 I want a steam deck literally just to play sonic games while I’m traveling
Chaomix is styling so hard in this one 🎩 9/10
8:23 Sonic Eraser DID release, although only in Japan with a Genesis addon
For the sonic 06 emulation,06 is definitely more stable with Xenia so I’d try that emulator too if possible
Doesn't work without Windows
@@wAABBsif Xenia devs are making a linux port
Omg this video couldn’t be anymore Convenient for me
Hey chaomix! You can actually emulate android with the emulator bluestacks, tried it once and it worked well!
Bluestacks is not compatible with linux.
@@powerpc64 he installed windows on his steam deck
I can't believe that you forgot the most important Sonic game ever, Rad Mobile!
Also, I am not planning on getting the steam deck, but I think you maybe changed my mind.
I’m so glad you got Sonic School House to work! It was the first game I thought about when you said as many Sonic games on the steam deck.
Thank Chaomix for making this video today, because I always wondered in my head if any Sonic games from a different set of consoles can be played on a Steam Deck. Because if I ever get one soon, then I’d not only played any Sonic games on the handheld but be able to played any other old Sonic classics on the go. 😎👍
Peter Knetter was the first person i saw play sonic schoolhouse so actually HEARING sonic school house is weird lol
Wario twisted with gyro on steam deck show that that's a video
BRO WHAT WAS THAT VEGETA SSJ 4 SONIC THUMBNAIL?? I'm dead, how utterly hilarious. I laughed so hard it started to hurt
1. Im planning on getting the steam deck ever since its available in my country, i use my phone with a controller, with games and emulators to keep myself busy while saving up for the deck and i see myself getting it next year or two, as a huge sonic fan, i cant thank you enough for this information on whats playable or not :•)>
And 2. 06 and unleashed *_are_* playable on steam deck at a decent framerate, you're just using the wrong emulator, your supposed to use the Xbox 360 emulator (Xenia) not the PS3 Emulator (RPCS3)
It has better preformance by far
What gives?
What a mad man this dude tried literally every sonic games sonic 3 sonic adventure sonic's school house heck even sonic speed simulator.
Where the hell is mania

Oh. Thanks.
Never thought I’d hear the words “Sonic 4: Episode 1” and “running perfectly” in the same sentence.
5:29 fortnite
This video shows why I don’t enjoy to play in PC… so much tweaks needed to play some games BUT being able to play so much games is amazing.
>use my steamdeck as a tax write off
THAT'S the type of Sonic fan brain we love, boiz
we ain’t playing around
Sonic Eraser. That's all I came for, and I am now satiated
Such unfortunate timing, only a few weeks back MattKC helped with a decompilation of Sonic Runners
and you could've highlighted that, but I'm sure you didn't know. News doesn't travel as fast as we think
I'd nitpick some stuff, but eh. Perfectly solid showcase, and the fact it's your first experience with Linux
isn't only a testament to the Deck's potential, but how far everyone has taken Linux since the mid 00s
FINALLY! Somebody is making a video about this.
Thank you!
I was literally just at the Galloping Ghost last week…. I could’ve made a pilgrimage to the Chaomix castle
Definitely planning on getting one! I have a few financial things to work through before I'm ready for one, but a Steam Deck is something I'm for sure excited about.
Update: I got one and am loving it!
Thanks for the settings for SegaSonic Arcade. 🙂
I managed to get the PC versions of Sonic Riders and Sonic Heroes to run on the Steam Deck.
It seems that you have forgotten the entire Mario & Sonic series.
You should check out the "Custom rcps3 sonic 06 build for steamdeck" Fully playable in gaming mode from start to finish.
The ability to have Adventure 1-2, Heroes, Generations, 06, pretty much all of the franchise in this form factor is great!
I am sure this has already been brought up but I think its wild that the trackpad was bought up here in relation to sega sonic the hedgehog with being a good trackball replacement, *because that was the point of it originally*
the original steam controller was designed with 2 Haptic Feedback trackpads because valve thought that a trackball would be the best Replacement for mouse movement on a controller (ok yes they thought motion would be better but due to negative perseption of motion controle at the time they chose to go with the trackball instead... before adding in a gyro anyway and everyone prefering to use that), but the Descision was made to switch it for trackpads that could emulate the feel of a Ball because that also allowed for the surface to be mapped to button contoles.
Eyy love that you got the steam deck, got mine too a month ago. Very excited to watch this video!
Forget shadow, the hedgehog on the go sonic schoolhouse on the go is when humans peeked
I own an ROG Ally and this video is not only makes me more powerful, but amazing!
3:07 So what I'm getting at is that the answer for SADX is, "Yes but you need the mod manager to get the 2004 version of the game."
Steam deck: please stop! You: install tails and the music maker! Steam deck: NOOOOO
