    Fun Fact: During the second phase of The End, if you're below 100 Rings and get hit by the orbs that cause the ring drain cutscene, you immediately lose and the cutscene changes slightly to reflect that.
    I learned that the hard way when I ended up wasting time and rings not hitting that stupid cable.

    Sonic Frontiers is ultimately a prototype.
    All the free updates and even the new characters to play with is all a test so that Sonic Team can choose the exact direction for the sequel.
    And Honestly I bet that the inclusion of Shadow in the Sonic Generations remastered is at least partially the same.

    Final Horizons was definetly the point where I knew that I don't think I wanna see sonic team try to implement RPG style attack and defense stats ever again. Along with other issues, it fundamentally compromises any potential in the games combat with extremely poor balancing. I never know what is the "right" level to fight enemies at and its so easy to overshoot it to the point that I wonder why combat is in this game at all.

    • @lupinthenerd439
      @lupinthenerd439 8 месяцев назад +18

      Combat in Final Horizon was very secondary: the other characters trees were more focused on their plaforming abilities (which makes sense since this is a platformer, I'd rather get that part down before anything else), and most of the combat was skippable because you can get gears or the tower kokos by treasure spots (it's not ideal, but if someone wasn't feeling the combat, it's an alternative). I don't think having RPG stats is bad or shouldn't be revisited because of one game, I think the unbalace nature of final horizon's combat is a product of making the update in one year, while also working on the other 2 updates and other projects

    43:33 a different review of Final Horizons put this into perspective for me: Parrying to defeat those spinny dudes is probably the intended way to beat them, not an alternate way to beat them, because it's supposed to train you to use perfect parry in the upcoming boss fights.
    They just didn't do a great job at it lol, because yeah, I like everyone else thought Cyloop was the intended way to beat them.

    • @Paul_Recall

      I actually ended up beating them in a pretty different way. I would cyloop them, start a combo, then right before my time was up, I would spindash into them and blast off. The spindash did fairly good damage, and helped me save time by not being knocked back.

    Small tip for the snake challenge with the umbrella guys, the challenge is specifically to test how fast you can parry between multiple attacks, that's why the challenge becomes wayyyyyy easier if you bait the umbrella attack, parry, hit it 3-4 times, parry again and repeat, you could even finish with time left

    I haven't played the final DLC for Sonic Frontiers yet, but I'm always in for a good bickuribox upload! I think Knuckle's start up glide animation looks pretty cool honestly. It makes the send off feel much more impactful. That said, I think if it had some beneficial gameplay merit, it could make up for the sluggishness it suffers from. Like, if in the start up animation, he was able to turn on a dime, it would make almost all of his wall climbing problems more bearable. Let's say you climb up a way, hit the ceiling, and you fall down, you can start gliding, then turn around while in the start up animation, and get back on the wall. Of course this would only help so much and doesn't fix the awkward corner collision issues, but it would be less annoying. In general, I think that messing up something that was already done well in the past (in this case, the control), is nothing new to the Sonic Series, but no less annoying. Ah well, as Sonic Fans, we take what we can get sometimes

    45:33 For the Tiger’s Trial, I learned that you can beat the wolves much faster if you do a jump where you’re slightly off the ground, but not too far off that after you parry them in midair, you should have enough time to hold the stomp button to damage most, if not all of them at once so long as they’re close enough to your vicinity. The timing is strict, but feels satisfying to pull off when you take down both at the same time.

    What you do is unique and special, you are one of my all time favorite reviewers because you managed to make a style unrivaled by any other, it's the in-depth exploration of mechanics, features and gimmicks, while also delving in players' ability to adapt and make their own solution, paired with your masterful sense of humor, by which I mean stopping mid sentence to comment on something that's happening in the background footage, always with one of the best deliveries I've ever seen which make your videos always infinitely rewatchable, and I can't wait for others to come; I'm a fan of reviewing channels, I've seen many and know of many enough to make a list for the most varied of genres, and the ones that I always remember to go and watch if they have something new has in common the fact that they are so different from one another, their script, their comedy, their eloquence, their edit and such, channels like Nova Zone and his deep understanding of what makes a game replayable and fun is the sole reason as to why I gave my 5th chance to Gunvolt, and now am an undying fan of it, or channels like KingK where you can feel the effort and passion on his retrospective videos, Breadsword and his way of talking to the viewer, as if you where in a deep conversation with him, and his breath taking long as fuck intros that have a space in your mind forever, Caribou-kun and his way of sharing his knowledge of his hobbies and passion with such a fire behind each second, CheeseGX's way of teaching you the full history of the most niche of things, KNIJohn and his unnecessary delving in mechanics to a point that at this point you played the game with him, RPGMonger and how he can convince you to give a shot to practically anything, and so so many others, for me, it's your humor, the way you can keep a video entertaining from minute 1 until the ending, and still be informative of everything you feel necessary, and I can't wait for your next video

    I happen to be really bad at timing. The final trial took me 9 hours(yes, nine)of constantly retrying, just because of wyvern and my refusal to change the difficulty.
    ... unfortunately, this had long led me to the realization that the stomp as super sonic is the best move for DPS, and of course, that cannot cut the cable during the final boss (and to be honest other attacks working is news to me, they sure didn't when I tried them), which as a result took me 3 hours of failing until I finally caved and looked up what to do.
    Good times.

    • @roiitzkovich4545
      @roiitzkovich4545 11 месяцев назад +4

      The thing about the cinematic attacks in Frontiers is that they slow down the enemies. You'll deal much more damage by mixing the stomp attack with cyclone kick to maximize slowdowns and have longer openings against bosses. Less DPS, but longer openings, which result in overall more damage.

    • @CyclonSilver
      @CyclonSilver 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@roiitzkovich4545 Didn't want to go into too much detail, but I did use the cyclone kick quite a bit as well. That being said, it was more of an input problem (since doing several stomps in a row could get tricky, alternating is much easier), or to generate more meter.
      I had to go through a lot of gigantos suffice to say, and stomp spam is extremely effective if done correctly, slowdown or not.
      Damage is also capped of course because of phase transitions, so once you've reached the max damage per opening(which stomp accomplishes), slowdowns become detrimental since you're on a timer.
      Of course, if you're at that point you can probably clear the trial easily regardless, if you don't have my timing issues. I was really just failing at wyvern over and over... and over.

    • @roiitzkovich4545
      @roiitzkovich4545 11 месяцев назад +2

      How is it that Sega still can't top/upgrade the Adventure style gameplay of Sonic's cast of pals? I get the change and experimentation like Frontiers using levels but it also why I haven't played a sonic game other than mania and origins since black knight. They first botched these controls in heroes and 06. Glitchy grind rails & getting stuck on walls. Smh with Sega taking baby steps with the adventure nostalgia lately.

    My favorite thing about The Final Horizon is how BOLD it is. Frontiers had a lot of great ideas it felt like it went halfway on, whereas The Final Horizon doesn’t go halfway on anything. It full sends everything it does and I think these polarizing extremities can give everyone a better idea of what a Sonic game can and should be like.
    Cyberspace, for instance, is now genuinely my favorite platforming in any video game ever. Getting under a minute time in that bomb level while collecting the silver moon rings was one of the greatest feelings I have EVER gotten out of a Sonic stage. Seriously, the level design is buttery smooth, and Sonic’s control and moveset feels so free and just flows so well now. Even if they went back to just having normal stages, which I doubt they’ll do, if they continue to follow this design philosophy then we could have one of the best Sonic games ever on our hands, if not the best.
    The difficulty is another divisive thing, but I think pushing us too far and then finding a spot to crank it down to is a much better idea than slowly inching closer to the sweet spot. The combat definitely needs tweaking, but the Guardian fights like Silver Hammer definitely show some promise in terms of better enemy design.

The missle parry i always had down though, i would just watch the missiles, calm myself for a second and lock in and i was usually fine.

    Tbh with you the soldier trial being the best was also for how it reminded me of the coolest part of the trailer,sonic standing on the border of everything as he glances at the hoard of soldiers as they sprint towards him as he clenches his fists runs into battle and beats them down one by one ending the battle with a smirk,another one of my most favorite things about the final horizon was without a doubt the love letter to idw fans,when supersonic 2 lands the grand slam attack it’s a straight up reference to idw issue 29 where he lands the exact beat down on zavok,great video man,can’t wait to see the superstars review whenever it’s posted ❤

    All I need to say is that THIS notification is all I needed in my life right now. Hell, this got me more hyped than the actual update ITSELF. Your videos are on another level, man.

    58:14 Increased Parry Window on Easy difficulty wasn't there initially. When I was making my video I remember that changing the difficulty didn't do anything and then they rolled out an update that increased Parry Window when I was getting footage.

    After watching this, all I can say is is that much like its reviews, much like these videos, much like how this game is received: Sonic Frontiers is touching. These reviews were how I discovered this channel. I actively relisten to them for white noise at work and for opinions on new games because they are so thorough. I was subscribed since the first frontiers video I think, but your videos are great. Thank you!

    I'm super late to the party, but I just finished Frontiers last week and I gotta say:
    Tails was actually my favorite character to play
    I hate the wind-up on his flight and "stomp" but I really enjoyed how unique he was compared to the others (even if his debuff parry is useless in Extreme mode)
    The wrench throw instead of a homing attack is actually a change that I loved since it made him more unique and emphasized further differences from Sonic.
    While I loved playing as Amy, since she was fun, I didn't like that she was essentially a better Sonic at platforming and a worse Sonic at combat.
    So even though in execution I loved playing as her and thought she was fun, conceptually, I just hate her moveset. Especially since she was one of the most unique characters in Adventure, Advance and 06. The only one without a jump ball or spindash now given both PLUS a homing attack??
    Knuckles and Amy have never had that. It's been relegated to Sonic, and the characters intended to be clones/parallels to him like Shadow and Blaze
    Taking characters with such unique playstyles and turning them into enhanced Sonic clones was just a miss in my book
    .
    And that's where my enjoyment of Tails came in:
    His platforming challenges were so much different from the others because he had different tools, like an easily accessed projectile and giant beam cannon.
    (He also had the most care put into his animations I think. I mean, look how adorable his parry is)
    But even more than making the others stand out; not giving them a homing attack, cyloop, spindash, wall-run, etc would make *Sonic* stand out more
    Since Amy and Knuckles are just Sonic+ it seems the only thing he's good for in this DLC are climbing the frustrating towers, doing the trials afterwards and playing through cyberspace, which is optional with how many Lookout Koco you can get from random signs
    Sonic is basically sidelined and outshined in his own game, rather than having unique aspects that set him apart like in Adventure
    Sonic was the only character who could homing attack, spindash and light speed dash, so while he and Tails shared levels, you had to completely change your approach as Tails (though Adventure wasn't perfect since Tails was super easy, but you get my point)
    Knuckles and Amy also visited those stages, but experienced them even more differently with their unique abilities
    I don't wanna make it sound like I didn't enjoy playing as them, because I did. And I'd rather have "Sonic with some tweaks" than no alternate characters at all.
    But they do shine the brightest when the differences are more stark imo, so I hope their next playable appearance takes more inspiration from their Adventure appearances
    Especially with Amy. I'm not a fan of how Heroes, Advance 2 and now Origins and Superstars have just made her a Sonic clone when she was the most unique character in SA1 and Advance.
    And why the hell does Knuckles need a homing attack? He can punch, jump and glide. He doesn't need the assistance platforming OR defeating enemies lol

    You described the feeling perfectly. Having automatic sections be short and scenic breaks from the platforming is exactly what I woild love to see going forward. This game genuinely made me look forward to an automated section cause I could finally take a moment to just relax.....before inevitably failing the next jump and falling to the bottom cause I panicked and wasted my boost and double jump in a way that not even the gravity-defying infinite parry could save me. Seriously, if it wasn't for the infinite parry, I don't even want to fathom how long those towers would have taken me to finish.

    Honestly during The End boss fight I unplugged the Titan and released the gun immediately by accident. Granted it was by accident. Imagine my confusion after dying like 20 times trying to figure out how I targeted it, and my confusion when I realized I had to dodge…

    I actually managed to beat it without realizing that you were supposed to parry the rockets, I just waited for the second phase of wyvern to happen naturally, to accomplish this I essentially had to do a no damage run, parrying every attack first try, and by the end of the trial i had only 9 rings to spare, then the game did the infinite loading thing before i was able to save and I had to do it all again.
    Still worth it for that ending.

    There should've been a damn achievement for beating the master trial through hard mode BEFORE the patch. Took me a 2 whole HOURS to beat it! All i can say is im glad future players wont ever suffer like we did.

    There are actually two other things added to Cyber Space you didn’t touch on:
    1. When you die before reaching the first checkpoint, the clock resets to zero automatically, so you don’t have to do the reset run trick.
    2. A fifth mark has been added. This one is purple and appears if the boost carry into jump setting is enabled. Also, the marks are triangles now instead of asterisks (*), and they form a pentagon shape.
