Tails in Sonic Adventure 2 when he thought Sonic was dead: I won't let Sonic down, I won't give up! Tails in Sonic Forces when he thought Sonic was dead: Sonic, help me!
My simple reason for why he's "Super" and not Hyper is because he's channeling half the Hyper power into the Flickies to grant them super forms. At least in Mania he has a proper Super Form. *EDIT:* Welp, Origins managed to retcon/fix this, calling him Hyper Tails now since he can access the non-Flickies super form with the Chaos Emeralds now. Neat.
I just figured he isn't strong enough to achieve a Super form through the Chaos Emeralds, so he needs the Super Emeralds to give him enough power to achieve a Super transformation, but it's still not enough for a Hyper form.
I liked Tails from the start because he's adorable, but that whole story of growth is really why he's remained my favorite character. Though, one thing I've been a bit disappointed about in the more recent games is that, outside of a single line in Sonic Adventure 2, I don't think they really call back to the fact that he saved a city. Unfortunately for the little guy, for having a story about growth they sure do love putting him back down to where he's always been any time he makes progress.
@@skibot9974 Regardless, he has a situation where he has to step up and be the hero and performed admirably, showing he is capable of being a full fledged hero in his own right. It's more about knowing what he's capable of.
It's such a shame they never did anything with Super Tails. They could have set up a great Teen Gohan sort of story where Tails matures and not only reaches the same level of the characters he looks up to, but surpasses them and makes something unique to himself.
I WANTED Tails to eventually become like Teen Gohan. I actually came up with a ''what if''. Some of the dbz characters are replaced with their Sonic counterparts. But the story remains almost the same with a few changes to fit the SONIC franchise more.(I put Tails as Gohan)
And then he could stay in the air longer. Imagine if his Hyper form was adding 14 tails to him, AND giving him the Flickies of Death. All the while, he has this seizure-inducing color that all the Hyper forms do.

People are just more prone to really root for the underdogs, and companies have a set goal with what their brand and face of their series have to be. Sonic and Mario for example. Luigi and Tails are usually portrayed as less head strong or even cowardice in their games while Mario and Sonic are always the first ones to take action which is fitting for a protagonist role. Nintendo capitalizes on Luigis traits with a Luigi's mansion game, but Mario is the kind of character you can easily fit into any situation which is why he works well as a main character in a vast majority of his games as does Sonic.
I'm pretty sure luigi nor tails would ever envy the popularity their main heroes get and just want to help them because they are important to their lives.
Rodrigo Morales Who said they were envious? We weren’t even talking about the characters themselves. The developers don’t give the sidekicks their own development for the fans that prefer them over the main protagonist. Even Shadow and Peach get more recognition then Tails and Luigi.
You were the most important member of the duo. When your older brother got hit in tough situations, it was you who jumped over the cliffs or into spikes in order to retrieve those lost rings. Well done!

"Why would Tails use a plane if he can fly!?" Because the plane can fly for longer than 3 seconds... I remember the first time I beat the game with all 3 characters. Tails, of course, was the last character I used. When I got the last Super Emerald and it said "Tails can now become Super Tails" I thought it was a typo at first but then got excited because I was hoping it would happen. I transformed at my first opportunity and was like: "that's cool, he gets all shiny...but his hair doesn't get spiky...". Then the birds descended. At first I thought it was a cool little visual effect and then the birds began to murder all of the robots around me. I was stunned for a second, just sitting there watching the carnage. Then I realized Tails was FUCKING AWESOME!
Also apparently the chaos emeralds turn emotions into power or that's the only explanation I've heard which means any number of characters can turn super at the same time
More than 3 seconds, can fly high, but not for long (although Tails can fly pretty high if the button is pressed rapidly and if the character is flown to the right angle he may go higher)

Tails has always been one of my favorite sonic characters since his very first appearance, it also helps that as a disabled guy, seeing tails overcome the stigma of being different physically is really cool to see
Okay, the Birds joke had me howling, you sure as hell aren't losing your touch. This video is fascinating to me as someone who really only has outsider knowledge of the series; I never knew about Super Tails until now. The super flickies are awesome. I wish they'd been included in sonic mania maybe in cheat form. They're probably one of the most op forces in sonic 3 and knuckles since they can defeat bosses for you.

Correcting the thumbnail title: "Why Tails matters." Or at least he should, but Sega keep screwing him over. I genuinly hope he gets into Super Smash Brothers, if only to start over with a clean slate. He went from the underdog with a heart of gold, to the still fun but one note mechanic, to a total background character.

They might nerf his flight ability. But it would be awesome to have Tails in Smash Bros. Knuckles would be a welcome addition too. (Though, let's not get crazy with all the characters that could be added.)
When you look at it, Tails doesn't ever go to the Doomsday Zone, yet can still retrieve the master emerald and come down in super form, which, in my theory is because he had Flickies to help him.
and Knuckles loses the master emerald again, but Eggman decides, instead of reusing the Egg Doomsday (It does not have an official name unlike the other Mobile bosses) to use Egg-Robo and Mecha Sonic to take the Master Emerald (and for some reason Sonic comes to help Knuckles?)

Fun Fact: Super Tails was named Hyper Tails in the Archie Comics. In Sonic Origins, when Super Tails from Sonic Mania came to Sonic 3 And Knuckles, the Hyper Tails name was given to the original.
Tails underrated and misunderstood, I judge him like I judge most character's in his position but he is a cool character but sega feels like it is necessary for him to be in sonic's shadow the only development he had was in the first two adventure games.
He’s my favorite charachter for this series he has so much potential that Sega just isn’t utilizing, he is pretty much the Tony Stark of the series with his hreatest weapon being his mind

Even when I replay Sonic 2 I usually switch to Tails mode because it's functionally the same thing just without Super Sonic, and I don't like using SS too much anyway because it makes the levels trivial. I even like him in Mania but hot damn is the drop dash too good to miss out on - Sonic is the bee's knees in Mania but all the characters are fun in their own way.
Hope you aren't forgetting about Sonic Mania Plus that includes Mighty and Ray, plus there Super Forms (which is just invincibility with a ring draining ability)

Super Tails is one of those things I REALLY wish could be a thing again. If only Sega still cared about his character development... like, at all... Just imagine if Tails' plot in Forces had been him searching for the chaos/super emeralds by himself to reverse Eggman's takeover instead of acting as an accessory to Classic Sonic. (also i just think the flickies circling him are super cute and unique to his design, overpowered though they may be)

I do think his role in the story is downplayed, as he’s the one who figures out eggman’s plans. However I also can’t deny that he regressed either. I don’t think anyone expects him to solo Chaos but at least put up a good fight.
Thank you. This is a great video. Tails is my favorite character of anything for the reasons you summed up in the video. Yeah he has his faults just like any other character but he's actually amazing if you look passed the BS that Sega has done to him. There are plenty of things that make him a worthy hero and in any universe/series you look whether it's comics, video games, or shows Tails being there made it possible for his friends to do things they normally wouldn't have been able to and in some cases saved their lives.
my thinking: the reason why tails couldn't go super with normal chaos emeralds is because he didnt know how much power to draw from the chaos emeralds, so he didnt know how to harness the power of them because he couldn't draw as much as he thought he needed. After using the super emeralds, he starts studying chaos emerald power use and finds out exactly how much power is needed to take out. by sonic mania, he is starting to use his super form with regular chaos emeralds.
I feel like Forces really missed having a Hawkeye kinda breakdown where he's creating all the Wispons, waging a full war against Eggman, and keeps wondering whether or not he is going far enough. I think Tails (in his old characterization) would way over correct after witnessing and losing his idol/best friend. With that being said Forces just dropped a lot of things
My personal fitting of the inconsistency of Tails' super form between Sonic 3 and Mania is that Tails was simply less experienced back in Sonic 3. He had to work harder to get a super form, and required the Super Emeralds to kickstart everything, but after becoming more experienced (and knowing what it was supposed to feel like), he can now harness the original Chaos Emeralds like Sonic. It took him longer, and took more effort, but it worked in the end. Even Tails not being able to fly in game for Sonic 2 can (almost) be explained away by the fact that he isn't relying on Sonic to do most of the work for him, and is simply too tired from all the fighting to actually use his tails for anything useful.
Tails has always been my favorite character, and not just because he's this adorable little anthro fox and I love those, but he was also Sonic's partner, his little buddy. Plus, he also has a use to the games as a mechanic, pilot, technician, and inventor

Tails’ character really has come a long way since the Classic era, though he was actually stated off interested in technology, particularly vehicles, as early as Sonic 2 and everything that followed just developed this interest into a full-fledged talent. What’s also really interesting is that the American manual for Sonic Triple Trouble stated that Tails did not actually know he could fly with his tails before meeting Sonic, which could explain why his flight ability wasn’t playable in Sonic 2, though the canon behind that is debatable. I for one was really disappointed that the little Super Flickies weren’t in Mania, because I think they are way more important than you might think. The Flickies are obviously oppressed by Eggman since he uses them as fuel and Tails was said to be bullied for being a mutant weirdo. Super Tails represents these two fractions coming together to do the right thing. The Flickies get to take revenge and kick Eggman‘s ass with their newfound power and Tails gets to show off that he’s not merely a mutant weirdo, but just as cool as Sonic, which was his original goal in Sonic 2.
I wouldn't put to much stock in Tipple troubles American manual given that Tails adventures Japanese manual claims that it plays before Tails meet Sonic. (Tails adventure is also to this day the only game in which we see that Chaos emeralds can actually increases ones stamina and endurance even without going super) And while I love that Tails shows that technology isn't all bad does it annoy me that he these days is just "smart guy with his tablet" .
@@rynobehnke8289 i like to think that in sonic 2, tails was trying his absolute best to keep up with sonic to save his friends, and sonic 3 showed the results of him having to keep up with, and trying to carve his own niche alongside the fastest blue ball in the game. He got fitted for his role in 2, and in 3 he grew into it, mastering technology was pretty much him doing everything he could to help sonic keep up with eggmans schemes, and eventually he got so good at it, that he carved his own niche alongside eggman as a true genius as well. The little dude had a lot of levels to him, and the later games slowly stripped much of that out of him, and reduced him to the "smart guy". At least imo.
Super Tails could only be access when Tails has both all the Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds. And here comes Sonic Mania where Tails can turn into Super Tails with the regular Chaos Emeralds.

I never played through Sonic CD because you can't play as Tails in the original version. Also no tails in Sonic & Knuckles by itself was a crime then and it is now!!!
I got all of the super emeralds for Tails when I was little. For some reason, my game would never let Tails transform. To this day I am still puzzles as to why.

They're no better than the bullies that picked on Tails in his younger days. "[Tails in Sonic Forces] isn't the character we know and love." Boost-era Tails was never the same Tails as Classic- or Adventure-era Tails. Forces was just when it was undeniable courtesy of Chaosgate. As much hell as Adventure 2 and '06 rightfully get, at least Tails was doing SOMETHING worth a damn in those games. Even in Shadow, he at the very least tried. Unleashed onwards stuck us with a clear imposter.
I think that they just went with the whole Tails is mourning Sonic kinda thing, which is totally fine, after all he is just a kid. But still, mabey they could have made him surpass his fear and avenge Sonic and fend off for himself, eventually joining up with the resistance.
Tails is like the Gohan of the series. He was awesome in the earlier games but kinda fell off for everyone as Sonic and Knuckles the Goku and Vegeta of the series went further. It feels like Adventure was his big Gohan moment but everything since then people don't really care for. He has a couple of good moments but he never really surpasses his Mentor or Father figure who just stays the main protagonist no matter what. Sonic keeps going and moving faster than him, and Tails stays behind being used simillarly but never reaching that peak that he did.

With the mention of Sonic 06 can you believe that that was the last time Tails was playable in a 3D mainline Sonic game (besides maybe Boom if you want to count that). I was happy to see him out the mech like in Adventure 1, but not so much when they nerfed his running speed into the ground to the point Knuckles was faster than him, meaning that if you wanted to get anywhere quickly flying was the only option. I think he's long overdue another chance to shine with his SA1 moveset (along with Knuckles). Let Tails run (and fly) wild and free, because as the old saying goes: let Tails run (and fly) wild and free.
I'm pretty good with Tails, he's my favorite in the Sonic series, I also main him too in the games. I've been on leaderboards and speedruns with him lately too; I like both his speed and potential elusiveness as well as being able to fly with his 2 tails which he can also strike with which I think is pretty cool.

It's wonderful to see someone discover what makes this character so great! You summed up why Tails is/was one of my favorite video game characters. It's also probably deeply personal, because my older sister always made me play as Tails while she would be Sonic. Seeing those feelings of him always trying to keep up with someone older and more experienced actually be an integral part of not only his gameplay, but character itself struck a chord with me. I never really found him to be "easy mode". He's just a slightly different playstyle. There are instances while playing as him where I'd LOVE to be able to use one of Sonic's shields. Sonic is the snappier more "impressive" way to play the game though, that's true.
Yup hes gonna fly higher (if he's not written like in forces) But the line about Tails someday surpassing Sonic is a potentially powerful one. Hes learned a lot of what Sonic himself can do on top of unique stuff he can only do cause of his tails AND his technological prowess on top of all of that. He can certainly be his own hero
i think it's pretty cool that Tails' superform sympathizes with the birds, and allows them to fight alongside him. the sidekick, who's grown to his fullest potential, calls forth his own sidekicks. (also notice how the birds are blue, and have their feathers styled a bit like sonic)

You can't control it, no. He can't fly with the second controller either, when using Sonic and Tails. The trick where Tails can carry Sonic only came about in Sonic 3

Dumb parents who didn't understand that just grabbing anything with Sonic on it wasn't actually smart. Did eventually get Sonic 3 tho.
The devs said that Tails needed the super emeralds to transform because his younger body (compared to Sonic and Knux) can’t handle the influx of chaos energy. The super emeralds have that energy both balanced out and boosted by the master emerald, so he can tap into it, the overflow gets channeled into the flickies. Tails is arguably older in Mania, even if slightly, so my going assumption is, due to exposure to them, he’s now able to process chaos energy better, and as a result can go super with just the chaos emeralds. but since he has no overflow of energy, now there are no flickies. Yea it’s ultimately just a gameplay mechanic, the flickies being part of super tails is just “well since tails can’t super form we have to make collecting 14 emeralds worth it somehow.”

For some reason when I first got my hands on sonic 2, I instantly fell in love with tails. I mean cute fox sidekick that happens to be underrated, I lost my mind once I found that I could play as him
I can totally see Super Tails as a modern plotline. Imagine the following: He goes super, then looks at a large flock of birds making them go super. Then, as the birds are now invulnerable, Tails commands them to, say, fly directly into the propellers and turbines of the Egg Fleet, annihilating all forms of propulsion, and thus, bringing down the entire Egg Fleet.
There are a lot of ways in which Tails parallels Gohan, the same way Sonic and Knuckles parallel Goku and Vegeta. There's a lot of inspiration for the Sonic series taken from Dragon Ball Z.

Even as an 8 year old with scarce access to a Genesis, it always confused me when some of my friends would dunk on tails. I just liked having a new character to play as, though as mentioned, tails can't fly in Sonic 2, but can in Sonic 3, the latter of which was my first exposure to the character, probably painted my view of that in a way. Still, I never thought he was as bad as people said. Thank you for validating that point! Looking forward to your future content, whatever you got coming up! May the algorithm continue to bless you!
Tails worked his two tails off to get to this point, he definitely deserves it, even if he's fictional. He proved that he's a good pilot AND that he's an 8-year-old genius, perhaps smarter than Eggman himself. He proved that everyone has potential to become greater than their hero. He proved that, like you said, sidekicks should be like Tails. Throwing full effort.

Sonic: Speed Knuckles: Flexibility Tails: "I have the higher ground" Seriously though, Tails was the first ever character I got to play with in all of Sonic games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on mobile specifically) and I'm glad that I did. He helped me and my sibling explore every area on each level. We weren't allowed to use the Internet back then when I was younger, thus making the stages unpredictable.
Honestly, for me, Tails is and always will be my favorite character in video game history. I don't know why, but I just love him. He's my little bud, and I love him even more than Sonic. This two tailed fox has been through a whole lot, games and comics alike. He started out as being a bullied kid for his two tails, seen only as a freak. But after all he's been through, he ended up becoming a young genius, and Sonic's best bro. The first player two of Sonic The Hedgehog, and the first to ever match Sonic's speed. Brings back memories of when I used to play Sonic 3 with my friends. We were three, and we all liked different characters. My favorite was Tails, someone else's was Sonic and the last one was Knuckles. So we all would see all the different playstyles and areas. That is until we all eventually got stuck in the circus area lol.

I liked Tails from the start because he's adorable, but that whole story of growth is really why he's remained my favorite character. Though, one thing I've been a bit disappointed about in the more recent games is that, outside of a single line in Sonic Adventure 2, I don't think they really call back to the fact that he saved a city. Unfortunately for the little guy, for having a story about growth they sure do love putting him back down to where he's always been any time he makes progress.

It's such a shame they never did anything with Super Tails. They could have set up a great Teen Gohan sort of story where Tails matures and not only reaches the same level of the characters he looks up to, but surpasses them and makes something unique to himself.
I WANTED Tails to eventually become like Teen Gohan. I actually came up with a ''what if''. Some of the dbz characters are replaced with their Sonic counterparts. But the story remains almost the same with a few changes to fit the SONIC franchise more.(I put Tails as Gohan)

Sidekicks are underappreciated, usually most by their own franchises.

People are just more prone to really root for the underdogs, and companies have a set goal with what their brand and face of their series have to be. Sonic and Mario for example. Luigi and Tails are usually portrayed as less head strong or even cowardice in their games while Mario and Sonic are always the first ones to take action which is fitting for a protagonist role. Nintendo capitalizes on Luigis traits with a Luigi's mansion game, but Mario is the kind of character you can easily fit into any situation which is why he works well as a main character in a vast majority of his games as does Sonic.
I'm pretty sure luigi nor tails would ever envy the popularity their main heroes get and just want to help them because they are important to their lives.

I remember the first time I beat the game with all 3 characters. Tails, of course, was the last character I used. When I got the last Super Emerald and it said "Tails can now become Super Tails" I thought it was a typo at first but then got excited because I was hoping it would happen. I transformed at my first opportunity and was like: "that's cool, he gets all shiny...but his hair doesn't get spiky...". Then the birds descended. At first I thought it was a cool little visual effect and then the birds began to murder all of the robots around me. I was stunned for a second, just sitting there watching the carnage. Then I realized Tails was FUCKING AWESOME!
Also apparently the chaos emeralds turn emotions into power or that's the only explanation I've heard which means any number of characters can turn super at the same time

The super flickies are awesome. I wish they'd been included in sonic mania maybe in cheat form. They're probably one of the most op forces in sonic 3 and knuckles since they can defeat bosses for you.

When you look at it, Tails doesn't ever go to the Doomsday Zone, yet can still retrieve the master emerald and come down in super form, which, in my theory is because he had Flickies to help him.
and Knuckles loses the master emerald again, but Eggman decides, instead of reusing the Egg Doomsday (It does not have an official name unlike the other Mobile bosses) to use Egg-Robo and Mecha Sonic to take the Master Emerald (and for some reason Sonic comes to help Knuckles?)
Using debug mode you can tell it's meant to be for all three characters (at least sonic and knuckles). Knuckles even uses his gliding animation.

In Sonic Origins, when Super Tails from Sonic Mania came to Sonic 3 And Knuckles, the Hyper Tails name was given to the original.
I think origins is overhated and one of the better ways to play the classic titles, but this is super lame
Tails underrated and misunderstood, I judge him like I judge most character's in his position but he is a cool character but sega feels like it is necessary for him to be in sonic's shadow the only development he had was in the first two adventure games.

And yeah, Tails was always my favorite in the classic series, man. Even when I replay Sonic 2 I usually switch to Tails mode because it's functionally the same thing just without Super Sonic, and I don't like using SS too much anyway because it makes the levels trivial. I even like him in Mania but hot damn is the drop dash too good to miss out on - Sonic is the bee's knees in Mania but all the characters are fun in their own way.

Super Tails is one of those things I REALLY wish could be a thing again. If only Sega still cared about his character development... like, at all... Just imagine if Tails' plot in Forces had been him searching for the chaos/super emeralds by himself to reverse Eggman's takeover instead of acting as an accessory to Classic Sonic.

I do think his role in the story is downplayed, as he’s the one who figures out eggman’s plans. However I also can’t deny that he regressed either. I don’t think anyone expects him to solo Chaos but at least put up a good fight.
Thank you. This is a great video. Tails is my favorite character of anything for the reasons you summed up in the video. Yeah he has his faults just like any other character but he's actually amazing if you look passed the BS that Sega has done to him. There are plenty of things that make him a worthy hero and in any universe/series you look whether it's comics, video games, or shows Tails being there made it possible for his friends to do things they normally wouldn't have been able to and in some cases saved their lives.
When I was a young boy, about 8 years old, I played Sonic Adventure. Trust me, for a reclusive kid, Tails is amazingly relatable.

my thinking: the reason why tails couldn't go super with normal chaos emeralds is because he didnt know how much power to draw from the chaos emeralds, so he didnt know how to harness the power of them because he couldn't draw as much as he thought he needed. After using the super emeralds, he starts studying chaos emerald power use and finds out exactly how much power is needed to take out. by sonic mania, he is starting to use his super form with regular chaos emeralds.
I felt like I was having a nervous tick til you finally called them Flickies halfway into the video. Now I feel all is well with the cosmos.

I feel like Forces really missed having a Hawkeye kinda breakdown where he's creating all the Wispons, waging a full war against Eggman, and keeps wondering whether or not he is going far enough. I think Tails (in his old characterization) would way over correct after witnessing and losing his idol/best friend. With that being said Forces just dropped a lot of things
My personal fitting of the inconsistency of Tails' super form between Sonic 3 and Mania is that Tails was simply less experienced back in Sonic 3. He had to work harder to get a super form, and required the Super Emeralds to kickstart everything, but after becoming more experienced (and knowing what it was supposed to feel like), he can now harness the original Chaos Emeralds like Sonic. It took him longer, and took more effort, but it worked in the end.
Even Tails not being able to fly in game for Sonic 2 can (almost) be explained away by the fact that he isn't relying on Sonic to do most of the work for him, and is simply too tired from all the fighting to actually use his tails for anything useful.
Tails has always been my favorite character, and not just because he's this adorable little anthro fox and I love those, but he was also Sonic's partner, his little buddy. Plus, he also has a use to the games as a mechanic, pilot, technician, and inventor

Tails’ character really has come a long way since the Classic era, though he was actually stated off interested in technology, particularly vehicles, as early as Sonic 2 and everything that followed just developed this interest into a full-fledged talent. What’s also really interesting is that the American manual for Sonic Triple Trouble stated that Tails did not actually know he could fly with his tails before meeting Sonic, which could explain why his flight ability wasn’t playable in Sonic 2, though the canon behind that is debatable.
I for one was really disappointed that the little Super Flickies weren’t in Mania, because I think they are way more important than you might think. The Flickies are obviously oppressed by Eggman since he uses them as fuel and Tails was said to be bullied for being a mutant weirdo. Super Tails represents these two fractions coming together to do the right thing. The Flickies get to take revenge and kick Eggman‘s ass with their newfound power and Tails gets to show off that he’s not merely a mutant weirdo, but just as cool as Sonic, which was his original goal in Sonic 2.
I wouldn't put to much stock in Tipple troubles American manual given that Tails adventures Japanese manual claims that it plays before Tails meet Sonic.
(Tails adventure is also to this day the only game in which we see that Chaos emeralds can actually increases ones stamina and endurance even without going super)
And while I love that Tails shows that technology isn't all bad does it annoy me that he these days is just "smart guy with his tablet" .
@@rynobehnke8289 i like to think that in sonic 2, tails was trying his absolute best to keep up with sonic to save his friends, and sonic 3 showed the results of him having to keep up with, and trying to carve his own niche alongside the fastest blue ball in the game.
He got fitted for his role in 2, and in 3 he grew into it, mastering technology was pretty much him doing everything he could to help sonic keep up with eggmans schemes, and eventually he got so good at it, that he carved his own niche alongside eggman as a true genius as well.
The little dude had a lot of levels to him, and the later games slowly stripped much of that out of him, and reduced him to the "smart guy".

I got all of the super emeralds for Tails when I was little. For some reason, my game would never let Tails transform. To this day I am still puzzles as to why.

Boost-era Tails was never the same Tails as Classic- or Adventure-era Tails. Forces was just when it was undeniable courtesy of Chaosgate. As much hell as Adventure 2 and '06 rightfully get, at least Tails was doing SOMETHING worth a damn in those games. Even in Shadow, he at the very least tried. Unleashed onwards stuck us with a clear imposter.
I think that they just went with the whole Tails is mourning Sonic kinda thing, which is totally fine, after all he is just a kid. But still, mabey they could have made him surpass his fear and avenge Sonic and fend off for himself, eventually joining up with the resistance.
Tails is like the Gohan of the series. He was awesome in the earlier games but kinda fell off for everyone as Sonic and Knuckles the Goku and Vegeta of the series went further. It feels like Adventure was his big Gohan moment but everything since then people don't really care for. He has a couple of good moments but he never really surpasses his Mentor or Father figure who just stays the main protagonist no matter what. Sonic keeps going and moving faster than him, and Tails stays behind being used simillarly but never reaching that peak that he did.

With the mention of Sonic 06 can you believe that that was the last time Tails was playable in a 3D mainline Sonic game (besides maybe Boom if you want to count that). I was happy to see him out the mech like in Adventure 1, but not so much when they nerfed his running speed into the ground to the point Knuckles was faster than him, meaning that if you wanted to get anywhere quickly flying was the only option. I think he's long overdue another chance to shine with his SA1 moveset (along with Knuckles).

I'm pretty good with Tails, he's my favorite in the Sonic series, I also main him too in the games. I've been on leaderboards and speedruns with him lately too; I like both his speed and potential elusiveness as well as being able to fly with his 2 tails which he can also strike with which I think is pretty cool.

One Interasting thing is that everyone else gets a metal verson to combat them (Metal Sonic Metal Knuckles ecs.) but tails... He gets Tails doll and not a metal verson of himself
It's wonderful to see someone discover what makes this character so great! You summed up why Tails is/was one of my favorite video game characters. It's also probably deeply personal, because my older sister always made me play as Tails while she would be Sonic. Seeing those feelings of him always trying to keep up with someone older and more experienced actually be an integral part of not only his gameplay, but character itself struck a chord with me.
I never really found him to be "easy mode". He's just a slightly different playstyle. There are instances while playing as him where I'd LOVE to be able to use one of Sonic's shields. Sonic is the snappier more "impressive" way to play the game though, that's true.

Yup hes gonna fly higher (if he's not written like in forces) But the line about Tails someday surpassing Sonic is a potentially powerful one. Hes learned a lot of what Sonic himself can do on top of unique stuff he can only do cause of his tails AND his technological prowess on top of all of that. He can certainly be his own hero
Tails is very unique. He has a story and even though it isn't mentioned throughout the game, the real story is growth.
i think it's pretty cool that Tails' superform sympathizes with the birds, and allows them to fight alongside him.
the sidekick, who's grown to his fullest potential, calls forth his own sidekicks.
(also notice how the birds are blue, and have their feathers styled a bit like sonic)

You can't control it, no. He can't fly with the second controller either, when using Sonic and Tails. The trick where Tails can carry Sonic only came about in Sonic 3

Dumb parents who didn't understand that just grabbing anything with Sonic on it wasn't actually smart. Did eventually get Sonic 3 tho.
You can't carry Sonic but you definitely can fly as Tails, this is how my sister and I played all the time on the genesis Sega.

The devs said that Tails needed the super emeralds to transform because his younger body (compared to Sonic and Knux) can’t handle the influx of chaos energy. The super emeralds have that energy both balanced out and boosted by the master emerald, so he can tap into it, the overflow gets channeled into the flickies. Tails is arguably older in Mania, even if slightly, so my going assumption is, due to exposure to them, he’s now able to process chaos energy better, and as a result can go super with just the chaos emeralds. but since he has no overflow of energy, now there are no flickies.
Yea it’s ultimately just a gameplay mechanic, the flickies being part of super tails is just “well since tails can’t super form we have to make collecting 14 emeralds worth it somehow.”

I can totally see Super Tails as a modern plotline. Imagine the following:
He goes super, then looks at a large flock of birds making them go super. Then, as the birds are now invulnerable, Tails commands them to, say, fly directly into the propellers and turbines of the Egg Fleet, annihilating all forms of propulsion, and thus, bringing down the entire Egg Fleet.

There are a lot of ways in which Tails parallels Gohan, the same way Sonic and Knuckles parallel Goku and Vegeta. There's a lot of inspiration for the Sonic series taken from Dragon Ball Z.

FLICKY ARMY OF DEATH!
Even as an 8 year old with scarce access to a Genesis, it always confused me when some of my friends would dunk on tails. I just liked having a new character to play as, though as mentioned, tails can't fly in Sonic 2, but can in Sonic 3, the latter of which was my first exposure to the character, probably painted my view of that in a way. Still, I never thought he was as bad as people said. Thank you for validating that point!

Tails worked his two tails off to get to this point, he definitely deserves it, even if he's fictional. He proved that he's a good pilot AND that he's an 8-year-old genius, perhaps smarter than Eggman himself. He proved that everyone has potential to become greater than their hero. He proved that, like you said, sidekicks should be like Tails. Throwing full effort.

Seriously though, Tails was the first ever character I got to play with in all of Sonic games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on mobile specifically) and I'm glad that I did. He helped me and my sibling explore every area on each level. We weren't allowed to use the Internet back then when I was younger, thus making the stages unpredictable.

Honestly, for me, Tails is and always will be my favorite character in video game history. I don't know why, but I just love him. He's my little bud, and I love him even more than Sonic. This two tailed fox has been through a whole lot, games and comics alike. He started out as being a bullied kid for his two tails, seen only as a freak. But after all he's been through, he ended up becoming a young genius, and Sonic's best bro. The first player two of Sonic The Hedgehog, and the first to ever match Sonic's speed. At least, in the games.

Brings back memories of when I used to play Sonic 3 with my friends. We were three, and we all liked different characters. My favorite was Tails, someone else's was Sonic and the last one was Knuckles. So we all would see all the different playstyles and areas. That is until we all eventually got stuck in the circus area lol.
