What a genuinely nice guy. Love these interviews
Y’all got me over here saying THAT CAR IS FARRRR like 50 times lol🤣🤣🤣
"Whale, I'll beef hooked" is one way of nailing Irish vowels, if not a terribly polite one. (Ed. I've been informed by a certain smackerz 88 that it's a regional accent! Thanks!!)
Hey,
I have a new video up!!
@@Smackerz1988 I'm still giggling that National Public Radio here in the US aired that bit.
No it's really not.
Love Paul, Normal people is one of the best shows to watch in these times
Awesome clip ty
The accent guy from Wired Technique Critique explains this "ar" vowel dipthong sound really well. Stephen's doing a hard palate R when Paul is doing a soft palate A. It's the difference between pushing out an R from the tongue going forward, vs swallowing an A from the tongue moving backward. Try saying "scarlet army" with your tongue as far back as you can
Sounds like a pirate: Yarrgh! the carrgh is farrgh!
One way Americans stand out like a third thumb when we visit Ireland is the way we pronounce the country's name. The Irish pronounce the "Ire" more like "Ar." "Arland."
Yes! Not Eye-rland 🥴
'Ireland' is an English word tho. We'd only be able to lecture them on how to pronounce 'Éire'
@@tn1340 Em except the American's didn't invent the English language and the Irish have been speaking English before USA America was even discovered by Europeans, we can lecture them on English if we like.
@theflyingshamanthegreatmin9788 we can't. That's like saying that the English can correct us on our pronunciation. They can't. We have Irish accents. We're all native speakers. Just like they can't correct Scottish or Welsh people, except for 'professional' English. Them telling us to say THirty THree instead of Tirty-Tree would be considered snobbish and rude. Same goes for Americans. The word 'Ireland' doesn't belong to us. The British came up with it to name Éire.
@@tn1340 The word Ireland derives from Irish it does belong to us not the British nor did they come up with it.
They can pronounce it however they like there's no incorrect pronunciation, but if an Irish person wants to correct them that's their prerogative.
I guessed the same, that Irishmen are pirates, Paul was teaching you how to sound more pirate-like, nice interview.
He's so nice hahahahaha
I’m Glad the your tweeter feed isn’t farrr, 〽️r. Stephen 💎
In Ireland 'pull off' means something else...
Why didn't he ask him what he has coming up, why he's in Sydney, etc.. (or how do these appearances work? Is it because Hulu is paying him to promote Normal People being streamed on Hulu now?)
Award season
He's filmin a movie called Carmen
The Irish guy is making the "ar" sound farther back on his soft palate, not in the front of his mouth on his hard palate.
Best thing to do when trying to speak with an Irish accent is please don't try at all because there are multiple Irish regional accents not the one stereotypical offensive Hollywood Irish accent that we hear time and time again.
Canada is a ginormous country of many accents. I've never been to the stereotypical "Canadian accent" place, because it doesn't exist. Don't do it, because when people get it wrong, it's just sad. Tip #1: maybe somewhere down east, someone says "aboot", but I've never heard it.
Yes I agree. Trying to do a general " Irish accent " doesn't make sense since every part of Ireland has a different accent and most of the 32 counties have a lot more than one accent
It just hurts our ears. Paul Mescal is using his normal kildare accent here but in " normal people ", he made a good attempt at an accent from the North west. At least I thought so. But I'm from Dublin so what would I know. I just wish Americans wouldn't even try.
😂
Best thing when trying something new is to not try at all because you’ll suck at it?
If we went by this logic since childhood, we’d be imbeciles.
Same with Southern U.S. accents.
@@kylorenthehusky2584 No. But Americans never and I mean never get any kind of irish accent right and it's cringey for us. Maybe if someone were to come to one region of Ireland and live there for a while and then focused on that one accent, it might be less awful. It just seems that the vocal coaches who train people in "Oirish" accents have literally never met an Irish person.
Stephen Colbert missed asking a good question. “ I heard you panicked when you read the scripts?”
If wasn’t over the sex scenes. It was all the car scenes when he is driving around, mostly with the actress playing his mother. The problem was he didn’t know how to drive. So without telling that to the producers or casting director, he quickly dashed out to get driving lessons - and a license.
In Australia it’s summer so that should have been keep the room cool. Temperatures are around 90 Fahrenheit.
??? Not sure but if this is in reference to Stephen's comment to keep the room warm well, ummmm, oh never mind.
When you say "Go way outa that" remember to stress the 'r'.
Irish: So the vowel is like Boston, but the R is hard like the southern states. Works for me.
Stephen, intelligent questions can be so...
Difficult to answer, possibly even
Hard?! ;) D
this was one of the most random interviews ever
So I guess Stephen thinks that Irishmen are pirates???
Lol, I was thinking that too. Paul was basically teaching him how to sound like a pirate 🤣
Stephen, stop rolling your r's when you say "that car is far" You sound like a pirate. :)
"The a or's"
Me: The eeyores? What? OOooh. A R's.
Ye we say "r" differently,
Whoa who is this guy? He's totes gorge!
😲 Right ?!?! .... 😈😈😈 !!
Back off, you two. Stephen's married.
@@floraposteschild4184 Doesn't make him less adorable...;-)
@@floraposteschild4184 yes sad to say highly intelligent, bespectacled and decidedly middle aged Stephen is married but the consolation prize is that twinkly eyed, talented, young and smokin hot Paul is available to anyone kind enough to offer him a good home 😂
Paul is looking suave here
Lol
I need to see this guy in a beard STAT. Meow.
Yeah- I would loved to hear what he's working on now... :'/ he is so amazing!
More Guinness.
1:09 its lik he's not even trying
Stephen's accent was just from Boston 😂
The irish "ar" is done with the tongue and the top of the throat, in the back of the mouth...make a circular opening at the end of the soft palate and say "ar" without ever closing it...I teach voice, and diction/body awareness is key...bet colbert could do it great if not for how heavily he pronounces his "r" sounds.
Colbert sounded like morgan freeman
The first pitfall is ending up with the toora loora US movie leprechaun sound, trying to be very light and florid. If Irish people spoke like that in theatres 100 years ago, they don't now. It sounded like Stephen was going into elvish speaking mode with the florid r's for a bit, there's some grit to conversational speech.
Get the Young Offenders on and give the Cork accent a whirl, that'd be unreal
So I only know one person who is Irish and that's Jacksepticeye and that's a pretty good tip. I noticed that with him too. I'll probably never nail it but at least I can get one step closer I suppose
Lol...the car may be far...but sadly not as Far from the accent attempt Stephen! You can't do the accent but we'll still claim you as our own (you don't have to sound Irish to BE Irish).
Ps had the good fortune to see Paul as a "youth" is a super version of The Phantom of the Opera in Waterford a couple of years ago.
He should have started with something easier and more leprechaun, which is how most americans go about speaking like an Irishperson. Something like "ah be gyra me spuds are burnt for feck sake" Or "ITS NOT CLOSING TIME YE FOOKIN DURTBURD"
😎
So... Irish Pirates then?
I think the trick with an Irish 'R' it to think of it as lazy. Stephen's R is working way too hard. Think of the placement of the tongue in the mouth in a R sound and then relax the tongue totally like its barely doing any work. In Stephens accent the tongue is still turning upwards in the mouth, he should practice saying R without moving his tongue at all.
Here's a primer for all those people trying to get your tongues around an Irish accent:

Paul MESCAL I enjoy a shot or two your drink, though some like to suck a lime with salt with it I prefer a slice of cheese. ; )
My gosh, he's so dreamy and hot...and I'm a straight guy!
Mescal like the kind you drink?
First!
Ha
Mescal is Irish?
Zuckerberg/Timberlake lovechild? 😅
Dumb interview. The sex scenes very tastefully support the love story in an honest way. Colbert was like a teenage boy giggling over sex. Normal People is such a deep and moving story about love, depression, trauma, redemption, but hey Colbert keep it superficial.
Did you completely ignore him literally saying the same thing?!
He said they were beautiful scenes
Did this series lead to the assault here in the US? How easily influenced are we ?
Paul mescal aint irish after what he did to people and he knows why he will speak german frankly and he can deal with it when the time comes irish are brown and not they know what
Lol, Irish is easy. Third sounds like "turd"
Go sounds like "goo"
No it doesn't.
tips on an irish accent are: drink booze and dont vomit, talking with your mouth half full is basically the irish way
Don't forget yer ma going "yea yea yea yea" while inhaling on the phone
